Phoebe Olive Allen Congratulations Jude! You may remember in last month’s Bulletin we waved goodbye to Jude as she started her maternity leave. Fast forward a month and we have a new addition to the Traidcraft family – welcome to the world Phoebe Olive Allen. Congratulations to Jude and her family for their wonderful news.

The RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival has been an incredible watch this year. One of our favourite gardens was silver medal winning ‘The Fashion Footprint Garden’ which focused on the impact the fashion and textile industries have on the environment. The garden’s design took inspiration from the textile dyeing pits seen in India and Asia. There was a sunken area containing a water feature with two steel barrels, reminiscent of the dye vats used in the indigo-dyeing process. The volume of water here equates to that used to make a single pair of jeans. We love that the word is getting out there about nonsustainable denim and its impact on the environment!

Last month, we held our Traidcraft Summer Party – the first time in over 18 months that the whole team have been able to socialize together. It felt like a real landmark moment for Traidcraft and a wonderful time was had by all (see pages 16-17 for some pictures of the afternoon).

A special shout out in this month’s Bulletin goes to Ray and Hilary Skinner, who celebrated 50 years of marriage last month! Their son, Will, got in touch with us and told us their wonderful story, about how they are good friends with the founders of Traidcraft and talk fondly of being part of the Traidcraft founding team. Will tells us that in fact, Ray was the first Chair of Traidcraft and Hilary hand-drew the first ever catalogue!
As Traidcraft is so close to the couple’s hearts, to commemorate such a special occasion, their children ordered £200’s worth of Gifts for Life, as well as the symbolic Olive Oil Tree Planting Gift Set and presented it to their parents on the day. #FashionWatchdog Update The Regenerators Appeal breaks a record We’re delighted to announce the final fundraising total for the Regenerators Appeal – together, we raised £1,312,585, including £656,292 of match funding from the UK government. A simply amazing amount which will support those on the front line of the climate crisis. It’s also the most we’ve EVER raised for a match-funded appeal – so thank you! This summer has seen the climate crisis dominate the headlines again, with record temperatures and flooding occurring across the world. To be announcing such a large amount of money that will go towards climate resilience is an honour – all that is left is to say thank you to our wonderful supporters. It was an appeal like no other, in times like no other, and every single one of you stepped up. 14 traidcraftshop.co.uk
Recently, Greta Thunberg used her platform in Vogue Scandinavia to call out fast fashion – as environmentally ruinous as well as an example of shocking worker abuses. The stage is set for the UK government to heed these calls and make a bold move. The move in question? Setting up a Fashion Watchdog that will make sure UK fashion companies are playing by the rules. Ministers are already considering the move – but they need a push in the right direction. This change is essential. If it isn't implemented, we’ll never see an end to poverty wages and unsafe conditions for the people working in garment factories. The cycle of low pay and shocking conditions shows itself in disasters such as the Rana Plaza collapse in 2012 and the cancelled order crisis at the start of this pandemic. It must be stopped. 11,700 supporters have signed our #FashionWatchdog petition so far. Over ten thousand voices make a lot of noise – adding yours can make things louder and make sure the government gets that last push it needs to stop fashion retailers abusing their power. TAKE ACTION HERE
What to expect from Big Brew this Harvest time We were overwhelmed with support for Big Brews both virtual and in-person during the Regenerators Appeal earlier in the year – with tens of thousands of pounds raised via these events alone, they were a massive success. Stories of door-to-door coffee and cake delivery in lockdown and communities coming back together once restrictions lifted really made this year’s Big Brew – Easter special- and we’ve not even mentioned the ice bucket and operatic and face-shaving challenges undertaken by staff of both Traidcraft and Traidcraft Exchange at our virtual Big Brew events! So, we're going to do things a little differently this Autumn. There will be no Big Brew - Harvest packs, and we will not ask you to fundraise for us in your communities, so hard on the heels of the Regenerators Appeal. It's time for a breather! Instead though, we'd like to retain and honour the spirit of harvest with a series of virtual events for supporters - a mix of talks, quizzes and workshops - to celebrate and give thanks for the year's successes, and especially for your support. HOW TO MAKE
One and a half cups of white rice
Add your white rice into your saucepan. Wash and drain rice twice to remove excess starch. Toast the rice on a medium heat for a few minutes, then add your coconut milk, stirring regularly for about 15 minutes.

While rice is cooking, dice the red onion and coarsely chop hazelnuts and broccoli. After the 15 minutes for the rice, turn the heat off but leave in the pan to steam for a further 10 or so minutes. Heat 1tbsp coconut oil into a non-stick pan on medium heat (top tip: there is often an oily residue at the bottom of your tin of coconut milk, which you can use in place of additional coconut oil!). Add diced onion, chickpeas, hazelnuts, broccoli, pressed garlic, paprika, turmeric, chilli powder and a pinch of salt. Stir regularly for five minutes, then add desiccated coconut. Plate with the coconut rice and enjoy!
