24 Fair Trade Rice Pudding Recipe

WELCOME Hi, Jo here, welcome to the October edition of Living Fair. It’s great to have you here.

Hi everyone! How are you? As we head into a rather unusual festive period, I find myself thinking of cancelled family events and holidays, meaning that for some of us, the festive period will not be what we are used to. Gifting means more, the personal notes mean more, messages in cards, all mean more. The art of giving seems to have been stripped back to a more emotional affair as we express our feelings from a distance. Just wanted to share with you some exciting plans which are being worked on here at Traidcraft HQ. Black Friday looms and we are excited to continue our #RejectBlackFriday #Buylessbuyright theme, with a twist. Last year we actively rejected Black Friday and the message of over-consumerism, and instead focused on our values, things that are important to us; fighting social, trade and environmental injustices. This year we hope to share even more with you. See page 8 for more.

It’s a busy time of year for Traidcraft, and as a business we are still navigating our way through a global pandemic, our challenges are not unique, they are shared with other businesses up and down the country. Your messages of support spur us on, the positive feedback we get from our catalogues and the reviews you take the time to write. They mean so much. Truly, thank you. Take care,

Christmas Catalogue Filled with fair trade gift ideas, zero-waste recipes and even a Christmas edition recycling guide, our Christmas catalogue is one of our biggest and best yet. Dropping through letterboxes from November 4th, it’s not to be missed.

REQUEST YOURS NOW

Recycle, reuse and reduce waste! We recently made an eco-swap, from air-filled pillows to paper void fill to protect your orders in transit. Traidcraft customer, Diane Bowen, got in touch to let us know that she has found an extra use for our paper void fill, once it’s served its purpose as protection for her orders. She smooths the paper, adds bedding straw and lines the sleeping compartment of her chickens’ coop. Once it’s used, the whole lot can be scooped up and composted, making an effective garden fertiliser in due course. How creative – we love it!

Welcome to the World… A huge congratulations to our lovely colleague and friend, Alex, who works in Traidcraft HQ’s warehouse. Alex and his family welcomed their beautiful daughter, Emma, on 4th September, weighing 6lbs 13oz. All doing well – we can’t wait to meet her! 4

Competition Winner Last month’s competition winner, Claire Ford, tells us that they’re loving the Organic Hamper in her household, and that the mango slices are a firm favourite! We’re pleased to hear it, Claire – enjoy!

P E A N U T BUTTE R:

the Spread that’s Ahead of the Game We can’t get enough of peanut butter. It’s versatile, good for us and incomparably moreish. We don’t know about you but it certainly ticks all of our boxes. Join us as we take a detour through our subconscious and discover why we are quite so obsessed with peanut butter.

Peanuts, in a Spread? Madness. So, How did Peanut Butter Become the Norm? There is evidence that ancient South American Inca Indians were the first to grind peanuts to make peanut butter. Whilst we can’t 100% prove that, what we do know for sure is that Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (of cereal fame) invented a version of what we now know as peanut butter in 1895. Later, a physician developed a peanut butter as a protein substitute for his older patients who had poor teeth and couldn’t chew meat! By WWI and WWII, the U.S. Armed Forced were given peanut butter in their rations, which is where the peanut butter and jelly sandwich is believed to have originated! Fascinating stuff. traidcraftshop.co.uk

Health Benefits A delicious treat that’s good for us too? Yep, sign us up. Peanut butter contains many nutrients that can improve heart health, including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, magnesium and vitamin E. Peanut butter is a good source of protein, which is essential for building and repairing muscles. The unsaturated fat in peanuts also gives you energy, which can help you ward off fatigue and stay alert.

Top 10 Ways to Enjoy PEA N UT B UTTER 10. Peanut butter popcorn

For a ‘stay at home cinema experience’ with a difference, heat peanut butter with butter, then pour over popcorn kernels and finish with a sprinkle of salt, pepper and cayenne. For a sweet snack, you can swap the salt and pepper for cinnamon and sugar. Whack on your favourite film and sit back…

9. Add to overnight oats

For a breakfast that’ll keep you fuelled ‘til lunch, add a spoonful of peanut butter to your overnight oats. The peanut butter will boost the protein content even further. Don’t blame us when you’ve completed your to do list by 11am!

8. Satay skewers

Peanut butter makes for the perfect dipping sauce for chicken skewers, but you can also mix it with garlic, lime and soy sauce for a mouth-watering marinade.

7. Low calorie treat

Spread peanut butter on rice cakes and top with banana slices for a lowcalorie snacking option. 6

traidcraftshop.co.uk

6. Blend into smoothies

Throw all of your usual smoothie ingredients into your blender, but add two teaspoons of peanut butter into the mix, too. Blend, et voila…

5. Peanut butter chicken

Add delicious peanut buttery goodness to your teatime by making your own meat coating. Stir peanut butter, coconut milk and tomatoes in a saucepan, and bring to a simmer. Coat your chicken, cook, plate up… then sit back and marvel as your cooking receives no end of compliments.

4. Tempting toast

It’s a classic for a reason. Whether you’re a sourdough, wholemeal or plain white bread fan, enjoy your toast with a generous spread of peanut butter.

3. Stir up your own fruit dip

Mix your peanut butter with yogurt, cinnamon, honey or maple syrup. Or even a combo of all of the above. Dip in apple or pear slices or even celery sticks. It’s a great way to get kids eating one or more of their five a day…

2. Take your brownies to the next level

1. Peanut butter fudge

Combine peanut butter, butter and brown sugar over medium heat until the mixture bubbles a little – then remove from the heat and add icing sugar, ¼ cup at a time until the mixture’s consistency is firm, and leave to cool. Prepare your brownie batter as normal, but only pour half of your mixture into your baking tin. Then carefully add your peanut butter layer and pour the second half of the brownie batter over as a third layer. Bake as your preferred recipe instructs.

Never have three little words brought us so much joy. Peanut. Butter. Fudge. Melt ½ cup butter in a saucepan. Stir in 450g brown sugar and ½ cup milk. Bring to a boil and stir frequently. Remove from heat. Stir in ¾ cup peanut butter and a splash of vanilla extract. Pour over icing sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat until smooth. Pour mixture into 8x8” dish. Chill until firm and cut into squares.

And they’re just the 10 that made the cut! See, we told you it was versatile stuff! Liberation’s Crunchy Peanut Butter is a firm favourite here in the office; sourced ethically from Nicaragua, the peanuts are lightly roasted to add extra nuttiness, so there's no need for added sugar. But don’t just take our word for it…

do you dare to join us? If you followed us last Black Friday, you'll know we do things differently here at Traidcraft. We don't offer flash sales, ridiculous discounts or giveaway goods... we are acutely anti-Black Friday mass consumerism. Now and always. Last year we downed tools completely and set out to address the injustices we saw in society. See here for more on what we got up to. Following this, we launched our Transparent Coffee, where we again, broke rules, publishing publicly (on the front of the packet, for all to see) exactly how much farmers are paid, how much goes into shipping, roasting and packing and how much profit we make on the coffee we sell to you. This was a world first and provoked a lot of questions, discussion and encouragement from you.

We believe in transparency; it’s one of the key pillars of Traidcraft, that influences every decision we make. This is why this year, we are breaking the rules yet again, publicly publishing the cost breakdown and profits of every single Traidcraft-branded product, on the front of the packaging. We want you, our valued and loyal customers, to see exactly where your money is going when you invest in one of our products. Accessible via a unique URL (which you will receive along with your order), any Traidcraft-branded product you purchase on Black Friday will have their costs and profit breakdown published publicly – making this a world first range, pioneering the transparency movement. This is the start of something massive... This isn’t a gesture of good will or a publicity stunt. It’s simply our small contribution to justice in trade. We wonder how many other companies would be willing to treat you in the same way?

C ELEBRATI NG I N SP IR AT ION A L W O M E N behind the collections… If you’re gifting someone special an item from Thought’s timeless AW20 collection, why not let them know the inspiration behind your chosen piece?

T H E WH ITE GA R DEN Unconventional, eccentric and charismatic, Vita Sackville West was part of the 1920s’ Bloomsbury literary set. She spent much of her life at her country estate, named Sissinghurst, where she famously created a magical garden of ‘rooms’. Gardening was Vita’s passion and for The White Garden Collection, Thought borrow from her personal style and the famous White Garden ‘room’ she created.

Top Tip: This is fantastic information to pass on to your customers, too!

Taking her lead, Thought reference 1920s’ fashion along with a sense of contemporary, androgynous dressing. Masculine jackets worn over delicate printed midi dresses define the look. A combination of textures and an eclectic print handwriting reflect the country house interiors that Vita would have known.

Vita was known for her unconventional dress sense; pairing masculine, traditional country attire with feminine panache.

PA P ER GA R D ENS The Paper Gardens collection celebrates an extraordinary 18th Century English woman, Mary Delaney. She was born in 1700 and lived a full life in royal and aristocratic circles. At the age of 72, Mary began a remarkable artistic journey. She was inspired to create over 1,000 collages of plants in cut paper, all of which she painted and assembled with astonishing skill and botanical accuracy. Thought Women’s Organic Cotton and Model Blend Black Long Sleeve Ada Top £64.95 Size 8 29796 Size 10 30064 Size 12 30490

These works can still be viewed at the British Museum, where they are kept and displayed. Only two are shown at any one time to preserve their freshness. The delicate charm of these images inspired Thought to create this collection, as a celebration of Mary’s achievement. Their choice of rich fabrications and colours echo the decadent royal courts that Mary would have known. Subtle styling details give a nod to the elaborate fashions of the time. To create balance and depth, Thought include more casual pieces in humble neutrals and fresh blues, perfect for cold winter days.

SU N GA R DENS The first form of photography, named the cyanotype, was pioneered in the 1840s by Anna Atkins. She is known as the world’s first female photographer, as well as the first person to publish a book of photographic images. Anna had a lifelong interest in plants and botany. She used the cyanotype process to record numerous seaweeds, algae and woodland plants that she discovered around her Kent home. Vivid blue tones are created as a result of these images being exposed to sunlight – something that’s unique to this method of photography. For the Sun Gardens Collection, Thought reference these intense blues and the organic forms which Anna created through their prints, celebrating her contribution to art, science, and photography. The power of the sun is expressed through rich tones of mustard and gold, as Thought imagine Anna on her sunlit walks through gardens in search of specimens. 100% Recycled Polyester Jekyll Majolica Blue Umbrella 68608 £17.95 SHOP FASHION

surely we can do better than this by robin roth, ceo

the opposite of poverty is not wealth: the opposite of poverty is justice. 22 traidcraftshop.co.uk

I have rarely found a phrase that captures the heart of what we do in fair trade better than this. Injustice tends to flourish where there is distance between us. The further away your coffee is grown, the less you know, or possibly care, about how it was grown and who was exploited in the growing of it. Companies have always understood this: the more distance they can put between you, the consumer, and the grower, the more injustice has an opportunity to take root and the more wealth they can acquire.

we hope it will inspire people to c o n s u m e i n a d i f f e r e n t way. Nowhere has this reached its logical conclusion better than in the proliferation of vast, anonymous warehouses filled with “stuff”, origin unknown, and shipped to consumers as cheaply as possible, for the benefit of a few, extremely wealthy individuals. There are, and always have been, of course, many outstanding organisations and visionary individuals who bring growers and consumers closer together; charities reporting from the “front line”; companies who import directly and sell directly to consumers; or local food co-operatives who combine their production and sell to members. They all strive to reduce the distance and ensure more justice in the trading chain. This Black Friday, the day when consumerism tends to go off the scale, we wanted to continue our work as pioneering a different way of doing business. Last year we boycotted the day which

was wonderfully provocative, and we enjoyed doing other things that helped the local community and environment. We had a lot of feedback at the time cheering us on and we noticed that we were not the only company trying to turn the day from rampant consumerism to better use. We followed this up with our Transparent Coffee, which again provoked a lot of discussion and thinking. We want to move beyond simple, one-off activities and make this a more permanent feature of how we conduct business - so we are publishing the cost breakdown of all our Traidcraft-branded products. Among other things, you can see how much ingredients cost and how much profit we make. You may be surprised at how much other things, like transport packaging and processing, really cost, and you may occasionally be surprised at the real value of what goes back to farmers.

If these are fair trade prices, designed to cover the cost of living, profit and investment funds, what are other companies paying you might ask? You might well ask, but I doubt you will ever find out. It is our small contribution to more justice in trade. We hope you will feel closer to the producers who grow the food you eat. We hope it will inspire people to consume in a different way. There is, of course, an alternative to our way of thinking, and it is a rare moment when I leave the final thought to Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. I could not put it more succinctly than he did when he wrote: “What consumerism really is, at its worst, is getting people to buy things that don't actually improve their lives.” Surely we can do better than this. traidcraftshop.co.uk

FAIR TRADE RICE PUDDING

Recipe

INGREDIENTS 300g cooked Kilombero rice (white or brown) 400ml Ma’s Happy Life coconut milk ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp ginger ½ tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp raisins/other dried fruit (optional) 2-3 tbsp maple syrup 1 tsp vegan butter

METHOD

1. Heat a large pan on medium/high. 2. Add all ingredients to the pan. Stir continuously and bring to boil. 3. Turn heat to low and continue to simmer until most of the coconut milk has been absorbed. 4. Add more liquid if you like a softer rice. Top tip: Traidcraft’s Helen uses a slow cooker to make her rice pudding, and suggests that the coconut milk, along with the additional time taken to slowly cook, makes for a thicker and even more delicious rice pudding!
