GET TO KNOW
TODD BOSMA
DIRECTOR OF GAME OPERATIONS & EVENTS
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO WORK IN GAME OPERATIONS? I don’t think I ever knew I wanted to work in game operations per say, but I knew I wanted to work in sports from the beginning. I went to a small school in Pennsylvania called Messiah College, where I majored in Marketing with a minor in Radio Television and Film. After graduation, I landed a summer public relations internship with the New Jersey Nets which turned into a spot on their game night game ops crew. In addition to working for the Nets, over the course of three years, I was able to work game nights for the New Jersey
Rockin’ Rollers (roller hockey team), New Jersey Red Dogs (AFL team where I was the PA Announcer) and the NY Giants (NFL); it was during this time that I think I fell in love with the game operations/ entertainment aspect of professional sports. While I had a full-time job in marketing, my passion was always in sports and after some time, my boss with the Nets moved out to Portland. A short time later he asked if I wanted a full-time job with the Trail Blazers. Despite having to move away from all my family, it was a no-brainer! My first year here in Portland was the lock-out shortened season of 1999 when I also started as the in-arena EmCee.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? The fans—Seriously, being around the fans here in Portland is my favorite part of my job. It’s ridiculous how lucky we are to have the fan base we have out here. We have the most supportive, consistent, inspiring and enthusiastic fans.
WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED LIVE IN THE ARENA DURING A TIMEOUT OR HALFTIME? Tic Tac Toe this year was up there—man, I still can’t believe how that went down, but we’ve had our fair share of interesting things happen over the years. A long time ago, we brought in a dunk team called the High Impact Squad, that dressed up as superheroes with masks, capes, etc. One guy made a big dunk, then as he was celebrating running back down the court, he lifted up his mask and vomited all over the floor. Then he proceeded to put his mask back on and continued to celebrate to the crowd. It was bizarre. One of my favorite moments was when we played a game during a Portland snowstorm. Due to the weather, only about 2,500 fans were able to make it to the game. After the game started, I got on the microphone and invited everyone to move down and sit as close to the court as possible. We had no dancers, no stunt team… it was just a bunch of friends hanging out watching the game and having fun!
WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING YOU’VE DONE DURING A TIMEOUT OR HALFTIME? To be honest, I don’t get embarrassed that much, but often there are things that don’t go right. I’ve messed up contestant’s names plenty of times, contests haven’t gone as planned—that stuff happens all the time. So you have to be able to adapt on the fly to any situation. If something doesn’t go as planned, we make the most of it. Sometimes things aren’t going smoothly behind the scenes,
and I’ll have to stall on the microphone until everything is set up right, people are in the right place—but that’s what makes it fun! You never know what’s going to happen during a time out.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GET INTO GAME OPERATIONS FOR A PRO SPORTS TEAM? Try all sorts of different jobs. Say “no” as little as possible. Every opportunity you’re given helps you learn something new. Getting involved with your athletic department in high school and college is helpful. High schools and colleges are developing student activities/game operations programs (even if they aren’t called that), and there’s plenty of ways to get involved. There are a lot of different positions needed to make game nights happen. If you work hard and have a good attitude, you can be successful. It’s a lot of fun—it’s the best job out there because your job is having fun and making sure people who are coming to your games are having a good time. If you don’t enjoy it, you’re doing it wrong.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE COMING MONTHS? Playoffs. There’s a lot of excitement around our team right now, it’ll be exciting to see our team go into playoffs. Rip City is great, but Rip City on playoffs… Forget about it. I have the best job. I’m very fortunate. It’s a lot of work, but it’s all worth it. There are a ton of talented people that I get to work with day in and day out—both in the offices and on game nights. They work tirelessly and have a true passion to make Trail Blazers games an amazing experience for our fans, they don’t get a lot of credit, but it wouldn’t be possible without all of them. Then our fans… to see the Moda Center full of BlazerManiacs going crazy—fueling the team. It’s truly a privilege to be a part of it. Thank you, Rip City!! ◆

15th Annual Autism Walk Sunday, April 22 at Oaks Park
Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in Oregon. If you haven't already, you will meet someone with autism. The Autism Society of Oregon provides free resources, education, advocacy and support to everyone in the state who is affected by autism. It is the only nonprofit that focuses solely on autism in Oregon. People on the autism spectrum want to lead fulfilling, meaningful lives. Together, we can make that happen. Learn more at AutismSocietyOregon.org.
Trail Blazers Foundation Live, Learn and Play grants for nonprofits are now open and we’re looking for applicants from across Oregon and SW Washington.
Deadline is APRIL 30 trailblazers.com/foundation
The Trail Blazers are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of children and families who have been historically underserved, where they live, learn and play. We support children and families in our region by providing resources to high quality, impactful nonprofit organizations providing critical services in Oregon and SW Washington. Throughout the 2016-17 season, Trail Blazers Inc. & Trail Blazers Foundation successfully gave $1.59 million of in-kind donations and $950,501 in grant dollars to local communities.
The Trail Blazers believe our home court extends far beyond the arena and everything we do in our lives makes an impact. We encourage fans to join us in our efforts to protect our planet and our community to ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
The Trail Blazers strive to ensure that every child has the opportunity to graduate from high school. We support youth in hitting the key benchmarks that ensure this achievement through their education.
The Trail Blazers work to create opportunities where youth are active every day, have access to learn and play basketball, and have positive coaches in their lives.
