Honoring a New Era of Historic Firsts for Oregon in Celebration of Black History With impressive accomplishments and credentials, these leaders have chosen Oregon as their home and thus ushered in a new era of historic firsts. The Portland Trail Blazers and Rose Quarter will salute ground-breaking individuals on a night when we celebrate Black History Month. The celebration starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Rose Room at Moda Center on Thursday, February 5, prior to our home game versus the Miami Heat. Please join us to honor these leaders; socialize with others who make our community great; and enjoy food and drinks. Tonight’s Artist: Austin Gilmore Exclusively at Rip City Clothing Co. ENTRY A6 Benefiting the Trail Blazers Foundation trailblazers.com/posters
G A M EDAY PO ST ER SER IES SPOTLIGHT:
AUST IN GILM O R E 1. WHY DID YOU APPLY TO BE AN ARTIST IN THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES? Last season I saw Ian Karmel tweet about Michael Banich’s poster for the Oklahoma City game. To be totally honest, I didn’t know about the Gameday Poster Series before then so I did a deep dive and as I looked at each one, I found myself thinking “I want all of these.” Then I remembered “Hey, you’re an illustrator. You should apply to do this!” I’ll always jump at the chance to create fun NBA content. 2. HOW DID YOU INTEGRATE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN THIS POSTER? My personal style is: ridiculous concept, bright colors, smiling faces, lanky arms and hanging tummies. When I sent the Blazers my illustration they loved it and told me to keep going. I nearly fainted. They truly wanted to showcase every illustrator’s total vision, and that’s a rare thing. 3. WHAT INSPIRED YOU ON THE DESIGN ON THIS POSTER? I kept thinking about that old Nike commercial where Charles Barkley plays Godzilla in a game of pick up; two towering players going one-on-one, elbowing each other and falling into buildings. So I thought maybe instead of Barkley and Godzilla, it’s Blaze playing Philly’s mascot. But Franklin the Dog
seemed a little dull. No shots against Franklin The Dog (total shots at Franklin The Dog), but I dunno, I thought it could be funnier. Then an image hit me: Old Benjamin Franklin, with his tummy hanging over his short shorts, trying to guard Blaze. That made me laugh. After that I was off. And I wanted to play off of Philadelphia’s unofficial slogan,“Trust The Process.” I wanted to make Portland’s version of that. And just the idea of a mascot and a Founding Father going one on one - it just seemed, you know, weird. Keep Portland Weird. Trust The Weirdness. 4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERPRETATION OF RIP CITY? From Jim Barnett’s legendary three to a mascot dominating the inventor of electricity in a game of pick up, you never know what might happen until you try. Or, you know, heave a deep three. Rip City, to me, means greatness coming from the unexpected. 5. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS? It always made my day getting an email from the Trail Blazers about this project. Every time I received one it felt like I was twelve again, when I wrote my favorite basketball players and hoped to get a response back. I did that a lot, by the way. And the only response I got was from Stuff The Magic Dragon. Shouts to Stuff. Listen, I live in Kansas City. Obviously, my dream is to one day have an NBA team here. I know, I know, Seattle. I get it. It’s a pipe dream. So to be able to work with an NBA team, especially the Trail Blazers, was a dream come true. 6. WHAT IMPACT DOES THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES HAVE ON THE ART COMMUNITY? Just what any art does, it inspires. Five years ago, I was working at a production company in Los Angeles. I had a degree in illustration, but I was doing very little drawing. One day, I saw someone post a picture of Tim Weakland’s 2013 Trail Blazers Glass collection. I immediately bought the whole set. (Thanks eBay!) And ever since then, no matter the job or city, the Damian Lillard cup has been on my office desk. Always right there, always in my view. It inspired me. Here was a professional basketball team embracing and featuring artists and styles I loved. I started drawing more, mostly for fun and mostly basketball related. Now I’m an art director and freelance illustrator. It’s fairly easy to connect the dots. 7. HAVE YOU HAD A FAVORITE GAMEDAY POSTER SO FAR? After I was picked as one of the artists for the 2018 season, I went back and looked at all the past posters. And, oh boy, did the Imposter Syndrome sneak into my head. There’s no way I should be doing something that Matthew Hollister, Bethany Ng, and Tyler Lang did last year. They’re some of my favorite illustrators and I love their pieces.
Purchase Austin’s poster at Rip City Clothing Co. tonight at entry A6, with proceeds benefiting the Trail Blazers Foundation. To check out more of Austin’s artwork, visit www.teaguery.com
