As part of the release of the new Nike “City Edition” NBA game uniforms, the Portland Trail Blazers commissioned a diverse group of local artists to express their passion for Rip City and the Pacific Northwest. Each artist used the jerseys as a literal canvas for their individual storytelling to reflect the Trail Blazers specially-themed Cultural and Community Celebrations happening throughout this season.
B A L L MEE T S A R T ALEX JACKSON BROWN | SPECIAL NIKE CURATION Revisiting childhood memories of McDonald’s visits searching for mini Blazer basketballs; and backyard bangouts envisioning myself as both Sheed and Mighty Mouse. (Repurposed Blazer-themed McDonald’s mini basketballs, Pro Club white tee (XXL) and Custom headband embroidered chenille patch)
(U.S NAVY VETERAN) CHAD BROWN | MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT | NOVEMBER 11 VS. BOSTON Let’s Remember. Nature gives us a dose of the medicine we all need in life. Taking a moment to pause breathes peace and healing for our souls into our communities. Let us remember, in this breath, a shared hope for our world and our youth, veterans and entire community. (Mixed media, acrylic and fabric)
ADRIENE CRUZ | CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY | FEBRUARY 5 VS. MIAMI Working with my hands, creating art in vibrant colors and rich textiles embellished with cultural symbolism offers me great pleasure and purpose. (Oil stick, sequins, beads and cowrie shells)
MICHAEL J FELIZ | NOCHES ÉNE-BÉ-A | MARCH 9 VS. PHOENIX Being immersed in a city surrounded by lush forests and snowcapped mountains is a major inspiration for my work. In these designs I attempt to capture the dreamlike quality I’ve experienced when exploring the many parks and forests around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. (Acrylic paint)
JOEY HAMILTON | SPECIAL NIKE CURATION In the early 2000’s when the Diplomats blew up, everything about their style inspired me. As I got older, I’d still pull style inspirations from them and incorporate it into my everyday fits. (Acrylic paint, bleach and Joey Hamilton signature basketball logo)
CAM KIYOKAWA | SPECIAL NIKE CURATION Pendleton inspired print paying homage to all thing Oregon, including some of Oregon’s most iconic things: mountains, rivers, trees, roses and hoops. Printed in Portland, Oregon. (Screen Print on polyester mesh)
SLOANE LEONG | WOMEN IN SPORTS NIGHT | MARCH 7 VS. OKLAHOMA CITY Two nostalgic fragments depicting the searing energy of rivalry, the threat of defeat and the thrill of the score. (Acrylic and spray paint)
JEREMY NICHOLS | FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT | APRIL 10 VS. SACRAMENTO I wanted to create a design that was simple, energetic, and representational of the Trail Blazers home; Portland, the city of roses. (Acrylic paint)
RAE SENARIGHI | PRIDE CELEBRATION | NOVEMBER 28 VS. ORLANDO Diversity is our greatest strength, as a team, as a city, as a nation. As a non-binary transgender artist, my goal is to connect with people through messages of resilience, authenticity and respect. (Acrylic paint and paint pens)
ISAKA SHAMSUD-DIN | HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. | JANUARY 18 VS. NEW ORLEANS Isaka Shamsud-Din is an artist, educator, and activist who has been capturing the lives, histories, and cultures of African American and African diaspora peoples in his art for most of his 77 years. (Acrylic paint)
JEROME STRETCH | SPECIAL NIKE CURATION For this project I wanted to showcase the iconic views that make up Portland. By juxtaposing the view east of Mount Hood with the new and changing cityscape as well as the unforgettable structures that span our city, both new and old, I was able to capture what it means to be a part of Rip City. (Acrylic paint pen on jersey)
YONG HONG ZHONG | LIVE GREENER GAME | APRIL 3 VS MEMPHIS I want to incorporate the Rip City mark into the designs that embody nature, natural beauty and environmental sustainability that the city of Portland represents. (acrylic paint and white gesso) 19

Tonight’s Artist: Mandy Grotie Exclusively at Rip City Clothing Co. ENTRY A6 Benefiting the Trail Blazers Foundation trailblazers.com/posters
G A M E DAY P O S T E R S E R I E S SPOTLIGH T:
MAN DY G R OTIE 1. WHY DID YOU APPLY TO BE AN ARTIST IN THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES? I moved to Portland a little over four years ago and met someone who has been a Blazers fan since they were a kid. I fell in love with that person, and with that became a love for the Portland Trail Blazers. We watch 80 games a season, wear our Lillard jerseys on game days and bleed red and black. I saw artists being announced during some games with their Gameday Posters and knew that I needed to be a part of it. I applied hoping that I could also have the opportunity to make a unique Rip City piece that would potentially be in the homes of 100 Blazer fans! 2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERPRETATION OF RIP CITY? Rip City may have started with the Trail Blazers, but it has become so much more. Rip City is the Portland culture of acceptance of weird, the passion for positivity, and support for our community. Just as Bill Schonely aka The Schonz stated, “The meaning of ‘Rip City,’ first and foremost, is it means something good, something positive.” My interpretation of it encompasses all that makes this city the most amazing city; unique people following their passions, being themselves without fear, and some having extreme loyalty to the Blazers, making our fans the best fans in the NBA.
3. HOW DID YOU INTEGRATE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN THIS POSTER? My style consists of simple shapes with black, fluid lines and fading dots, with an integration of bright colors. With this combination, I feel it gives breath and a unique life to my work. I dig working with bright colors to embed positivity into my art. I believe that this can have an effect through an awakening of the visual senses. Color lifts you up and brings joy into your life! My work is funky, weird, and full of love. I combine these elements typically in a symmetrical way to create a visually pleasing piece. This piece I made for the Blazers integrated my style by having those solid black lines, many dots, and bright colors. I wanted to create a living Rip City that looked like it was blooming. The symmetrical aspect of the roses surrounding the Blazers logo emphasized the importance of Rip City to our community. It is an integral part that connects so many Portlandians in a positive way. 4. WHAT INSPIRED YOU ON THE DESIGN ON THIS POSTER? When I received an email stating I was chosen to be a Gameday Poster Series Artist, I immediately started brainstorming what I wanted to create. To inspire my piece, I decided to sign up for a tour of murals in SE Portland. It was a sunny Saturday in August, and a group of us weaved the streets of Portland discussing graffiti styles and the importance of the art community. From this experience, I realized that the art community in Portland is so unique and passionate for their craft. My piece encompasses the idea that Rip City is surrounded by funky, weird, and amazing individuals who let their freak flags fly, are not afraid of their quirky interests and enjoy every day. In the City of Roses, we are all our own unique rose. 5. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS? The thing I am most excited about is that I was chosen to make a piece of art for Rip City! I can’t wait to be announced at my chosen game and hopefully see pictures of the poster in people’s homes. Being a huge Blazers fan, just the thought of the Trail Blazers seeing my artwork gets me so excited! The anticipation leading up to my game night is thrilling. This whole process of creating a unique piece for the city that I love has been a dream come true. 6. WHAT IMPACT DOES THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES HAVE ON THE ART COMMUNITY? I think any opportunity for artists to show off their style and skills are greatly impactful on the artist community. Especially being tied to a huge sports team, the Gameday Poster Series has a definite “wow” factor for the number of eyes on each artist’s dream. This helps boost artist’s self-esteem, connect them to individuals who may have never seen their art, and up their drive to create more. 7. HAVE YOU HAD A FAVORITE GAMEDAY POSTER SO FAR? My favorite Gameday Poster was created last year by Murphy Phelan. His interpretation of the Blazers logo and Rip City were so on point. I loved his cartoony vision of all that is Portland. His color choice was simple, yet so profound. I just really liked his funky drawing that went outside the lines.

( R I P ) C I T Y E D I T I O N D es igned wi th the Trail Blazers prim a ry red and black team colors plus a spe cial e dition gray.
Coined by Bill Schonely in our inaugural season, Rip City has grown to represent the spirit of our fans, city and culture.
A twist on the iconic jersey sash with red across the chest is a nod to our City of Roses.
The PDX nickname is a tribute to our hometown – Portland, Oregon, USA.
Blazermania is an endearing term that describes the unique fandemonium of Rip City.
A salute to the year it all began, 1970.
