CELEBRATE ONE OF OUR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY PARTNERS WITH US! The Green Sports Alliance is the environmentally-focused trade organization that convenes stakeholders from around the sporting world (teams, leagues, conferences, venues, corporate partners, governmental agencies, athletes, and fans) to promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live and play. We are committed to creating awareness and dedicated to creating meaningful change towards a more sustainable future.

Keep an eye out around the arena for ways to support Green Sports Alliance, an amazing organization that leverages the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable communities where people live and play. To support these efforts, we hope you will take part in these activities at Moda Center: • 5050 RAFFLE: Raffle tickets sold until the end of halftime with a chance to win half the jackpot raised tonight! • SILENT AUCTION: Bid on items @ A7 on the 100-level concourse until the end of halftime. • ITEM OF GAME: Check out our Green Item of the Game for sale at Rip City Clothing Co. by entry A6. Green Sports Alliance will receive a portion of the proceeds for each sale. • GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES: We’ve partnered with local artists to craft a uniquely designed poster for each Trail Blazers Home game. All net proceeds from the sales of the Gameday Poster Series will be donated to the Trail Blazers Foundation, which will then be granted to local nonprofit organizations. For more information, please visit Green Sports Alliance at the Community Corner table by entry A25 or go to www.greensportsalliance.org.

GET TO KNOW

TODD BOSMA

DIRECTOR OF GAME OPERATIONS & EVENTS

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO WORK IN GAME OPERATIONS? I don’t think I ever knew I wanted to work in game operations per say, but I knew I wanted to work in sports from the beginning. I went to a small school in Pennsylvania called Messiah College, where I majored in Marketing with a minor in Radio Television and Film. After graduation, I landed a summer public relations internship with the New Jersey Nets which turned into a spot on their game night game ops crew. In addition to working for the Nets, over the course of three years, I was able to work game nights for the New Jersey

18

Rockin’ Rollers (roller hockey team), New Jersey Red Dogs (AFL team where I was the PA Announcer) and the NY Giants (NFL); it was during this time that I think I fell in love with the game operations/ entertainment aspect of professional sports. While I had a full-time job in marketing, my passion was always in sports and after some time, my boss with the Nets moved out to Portland. A short time later he asked if I wanted a full-time job with the Trail Blazers. Despite having to move away from all my family, it was a no-brainer! My first year here in Portland was the lock-out shortened season of 1999 when I also started as the in-arena EmCee.

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • GET TO KNOW TODD BOSMA

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? The fans—Seriously, being around the fans here in Portland is my favorite part of my job. It’s ridiculous how lucky we are to have the fan base we have out here. We have the most supportive, consistent, inspiring and enthusiastic fans.

WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED LIVE IN THE ARENA DURING A TIMEOUT OR HALFTIME? Tic Tac Toe this year was up there—man, I still can’t believe how that went down, but we’ve had our fair share of interesting things happen over the years. A long time ago, we brought in a dunk team called the High Impact Squad, that dressed up as superheroes with masks, capes, etc. One guy made a big dunk, then as he was celebrating running back down the court, he lifted up his mask and vomited all over the floor. Then he proceeded to put his mask back on and continued to celebrate to the crowd. It was bizarre. One of my favorite moments was when we played a game during a Portland snowstorm. Due to the weather, only about 2,500 fans were able to make it to the game. After the game started, I got on the microphone and invited everyone to move down and sit as close to the court as possible. We had no dancers, no stunt team… it was just a bunch of friends hanging out watching the game and having fun!

WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING YOU’VE DONE DURING A TIMEOUT OR HALFTIME? To be honest, I don’t get embarrassed that much, but often there are things that don’t go right. I’ve messed up contestant’s names plenty of times, contests haven’t gone as planned—that stuff happens all the time. So you have to be able to adapt on the fly to any situation. If something doesn’t go as planned, we make the most of it. Sometimes things aren’t going smoothly behind the scenes,

and I’ll have to stall on the microphone until everything is set up right, people are in the right place—but that’s what makes it fun! You never know what’s going to happen during a time out.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GET INTO GAME OPERATIONS FOR A PRO SPORTS TEAM? Try all sorts of different jobs. Say “no” as little as possible. Every opportunity you’re given helps you learn something new. Getting involved with your athletic department in high school and college is helpful. High schools and colleges are developing student activities/game operations programs (even if they aren’t called that), and there’s plenty of ways to get involved. There are a lot of different positions needed to make game nights happen. If you work hard and have a good attitude, you can be successful. It’s a lot of fun—it’s the best job out there because your job is having fun and making sure people who are coming to your games are having a good time. If you don’t enjoy it, you’re doing it wrong.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING AT AN NBA ALL-STAR GAME. It’s amazing! I’ve been fortunate enough to work at the last four All-Star Weekends, the first two as a stage manager working all the events over the weekend; and the last two focusing on just Sunday, serving as the Producer/Director of the All-Star game itself. The All-Star game is different than an ordinary game since there is no “home-court” advantage to play off and fans are coming from all over to see their favorite players play. While some use the All-Star break as an opportunity to step away from games for a minute, we are spending 15+ hours in the arena rehearsing, tweaking a game we’ve spent months brainstorming and planning for – but I love it! It’s unreal to be entrusted with the biggest show the NBA puts on. I am honored to represent Rip City in any way I can during All-Star weekend. ◆
