TRAIL BLAZERS VS HEAT

MODA CENTER • PORTLAND, OREGON

BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written as a poem by NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) leader, James Weldon Johnson. The poem was then turned to music by Johnson’s brother, John Rosamond Johnson in 1899. It was first publicly performed by 500 kids from a segregated school in Jacksonville, Florida in celebration of President Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday on February 12th, 1900. The poem was later adopted by the NAACP as its official song. Today “Lift Every Voice and Sing” remains one of the most cherished songs of the African American Civil Rights Movement and is often referred to as the Black National Anthem.

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING By James Weldon Johnson Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our God, True to our native land.

Tonight’s Artist: Edmund Holmes Exclusively at Rip City Clothing Co. ENTRY A6 Benefiting the Trail Blazers Foundation trailblazers.com/posters

G A M EDAY PO ST ER SER IES SPOTLIGHT:

EDMUND HOLMES 1. WHY DID YOU APPLY TO BE AN ARTIST IN THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES? The Gameday Poster Series sounded like a great opportunity to help a great cause (the Trail Blazers Foundation), to get more exposure as an artist, and send a positive message. 2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERPRETATION OF RIP CITY? Rip City celebrates its uniqueness. What makes it so unique is the support of people from all around the world. Rip City is passionate, standing behind beliefs and people. Anytime you attend a game you feel a part of Portland because of how passionate the fans are. 3. WHAT INSPIRED YOU ON THE DESIGN ON THIS POSTER? February is Black History Month. This is a celebration. Everyone knows the big problems that are going on with race around the world. The fact that athletes and celebrities are using their platform to spread a non-violent message is amazing, from kneeling, to speaking up about violence and people being mistreated. I’m inspired by a combination of that and our ancestors who paved the way. This is why in the illustration the basketball player is in the air with the ball in a powerful, confident dunking position. He is yelling for everyone to stand up for injustice, disrespect, racism - to spread positivity and love. One of his fists is up in the air to show pride and respect. One knee down representing a message that is being passed along. We are not standing for disrespect, injustice or racism. 4. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS? I enjoyed giving strong meaning to my art. Hopefully you can see the celebration, passion and encouragement from it. 5. WHAT IMPACT DOES THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES HAVE ON THE ART COMMUNITY? The power of art. The power of collaboration. Supporting local artists.

Purchase Edmund’s poster at Rip City Clothing Co. tonight at entry A6, with proceeds benefiting the Trail Blazers Foundation. To check out more of Edmund’s artwork, visit www.edmundholmes.com
