G A M EDAY PO ST ER SER IES SPOTLIGHT:
BE N N ET T RUS T 1. WHY DID YOU APPLY TO BE AN ARTIST IN THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES? I applied for the Gameday Poster Series because it seemed like the perfect melding of my favorite interests; art and basketball. Seeing all the work that was produced last year, there was a wide range of styles represented that felt refreshing. I commend the Trail Blazers for giving artists, particularly those who are actively part of the Portland community, a platform to really show what they’re capable of, to an audience that may not otherwise discover them. 2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERPRETATION OF RIP CITY? The Blazers pinwheel is such an iconic image, it’s one of sports’ most storied logos. There’s a reason why it hasn’t changed much since the team’s first season; all we had to do to modernize it was tilt it a couple degrees to the right! So I wanted to play with that, something that incorporated the pinwheel without it being too overt. One of the most exhilarating aspects to Utah landscapes is how rich the sky looks, so I wanted to use the arc of the pinwheel as a guide for shooting stars. 3. HOW DID YOU INTEGRATE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN THIS POSTER? I’ve always liked taking a minimal approach to illustrations; something that relies on sharp but simple line work and dynamic shapes. It helps to have a simplified base, so you can get complex in the details. The color scheme was also important to nail down ahead of time. I tend to work with cool colors, blues and greens, so using warm colors like the oranges of Utah’s vistas and the Trail Blazers red was a fun departure.
4. WHAT INSPIRED YOU ON THE DESIGN ON THIS POSTER? This illustration plays with several concepts that have inspired me over the years. I remember in the 90s watching playoff games between Utah and Portland, and when the broadcast came back from commercial break they’d show these beautiful shots of Salt Lake City with these pristine mountains behind the skyline, surrounded by endless stretches of flat land. There’s something captivating about how the southwest is laid out, these giant rock formations, the rich colors, and just how expansive it all feels. I also like to approach landscapes the same way I would approach backgrounds for animation, and I’ve always been inspired by Maurice Noble’s background and layout work on Looney Tunes. He played a lot with sharp angled lines, inorganic shapes and broken perspective, abstracting the environment just enough to make the slapstick of a Daffy Duck cartoon seem grounded. Road Runner cartoons are some of his best work, so much of those stories rely on Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote interacting with their environment, and Noble came up with brilliant American southwest set pieces for them to play with. 5. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS? I love the problem solving that comes with making the finished piece. The big picture stuff is already taken care of: we have these main elements. But how do they fit together? Will this idea work as well when I see it on the page vs. how it looks in my head? Where should I put this line, or this dot? With that comes a LOT of trial and error, and even more drawing, but there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing those decisions compound together to make the final piece. Early on, I wanted to spell out “UTAH” using the main rock formation’s shadow. After many attempts it just wasn’t working the way I wanted. But that’s also part of the process too; the more you fail, the better you get, because you’re spending that much more time drawing, and taking that knowledge to apply to future work. 6. WHAT IMPACT DOES THE GAMEDAY POSTER SERIES HAVE ON THE ART COMMUNITY? It’s really easy to take art for granted, but it’s so integral to a community in how it expresses itself, how we connect to one another, and ultimately how we remember our history. The Blazers Pinwheel is an icon I’ve associated with home for my entire life, and that started out as a scribble in a designer’s sketchbook when the team was brainstorming ideas for a logo. Art has a lasting impact, and it’s good to see an institution as ingrained in its town culture as the Trail Blazers understand that and want to encourage the city to embrace art through this poster series. 7. HAVE YOU HAD A FAVORITE GAMEDAY POSTER SO FAR? I remember seeing the first Gameday Poster, for a game against the New Orleans Pelicans. I thought that it was a clever image that highlighted the specific game while also paying tribute to Portland. I think any team that has a rich history has great rivalries, opponents that push you to be better. I still vividly remember the first game I went to, against the Lakers. Shaq got ejected and Arvydas Sabonis went on a 4th quarter scoring spree. Those memories shine that much more knowing who we were up against. Any good gameday poster should commemorate the specific game, and the opposing team is an important detail to incorporate.
