REMEMBERING PAUL G. ALLEN 01.21.1953–10.15.2018 TRAIL BLAZERS OWNER SINCE 1988
“At a loss for words. RIP to a great man... much love and Respect!” —Damian Lillard “You made the world a better place and changed the life trajectory of so many. Deepest condolences to your family and loved ones.” —CJ McCollum “I am so saddened by the tragic news today of Paul’s passing. I was fortunate to get to know him, learn from him and witness all the passion he put into making our world a better place. I will miss him dearly. Thanks for all that you gave. Rest in Peace Paul Allen.” —Chris McGowan “It was an honor and a privilege to know and work for Paul Allen these past six years. He was a man of unparalleled passion, creativity and vision that expected those with whom he surrounded himself to strive for the same standards of excellence he held himself to. I will miss his leadership in finding solutions to our challenges and am deeply saddened we will no longer be able to share the joys of our successes. My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Allen family and all that knew and loved him.” —Neil Olshey
“I am heartbroken by the passing of one of my oldest and dearest friends, Paul Allen. From our early days together at Lakeside School, through our partnership in the creation of Microsoft, to some of our joint philanthropic projects over the years, Paul was a true partner and dear friend. Personal computing would not have existed without him.” —Bill Gates “Paul was a remarkable pioneer, a generous philanthropist and a special partner for us. SKG wouldn't have been possible for us without him. Our hearts and prayers are with him and his family.” —Steven Spielberg “Paul Allen was the ultimate trail blazer— in business, philanthropy and in sports. As one of the longest-tenured owners in the NBA, Paul brought a sense of discovery and vision to every league matter large and small. He was generous with his time on committee work, and his expertise helped lay the foundation for the league’s growth internationally and our embrace of new technologies. He was a valued voice who challenged assumptions and conventional wisdom and one we will deeply miss as we start a new season without him. Our condolences go to his family, friends and the entire Trail Blazers organization.” —Adam Silver

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH TRAIL BLAZERS TELEVISION PLAY-BY-PLAY
KEVIN CALABRO DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS OR SUPERSTITIONS ON A GAME DAY?
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TRAIL BLAZERS HOME GAME?
Our ritual involves a noon conference call with our producer. We probably have 12 people on the 10-minute call. Everybody weighs in with story ideas. Our producer will lay out our pregame and broadcast open, so we’re all on the same page when we get to the arena. I prepare a chart usually the night before the game with relevant stats etc. I like to get a walk or swim in around 1pm. Then a 45-minute nap. That works wonders.
We have all types of notes and numbers coming our way from our producer and his team. I like to tape the games of our next opponent then watch in the morning.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TRAIL BLAZERS ROAD TRIP? Pack for the games, workouts and relaxing. I’ve only had to borrow black socks once from Coach
TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • BROADCASTER FEATURE
Jim Moran. One other time I had to buy striped socks in the hotel gift shop in Atlanta for $30. For that price I wore them three times on the trip. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ARENA IN THE NBA? (BESIDES THE MODA CENTER, OF COURSE) I like the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indy. My hometown. Usually my brothers Ron or Dave bring their families and my Mom and Dad to my one time in town. It’s special to me. ARE THERE ANY PLACES ON THE ROAD THAT YOU FREQUENT? RESTAURANTS, QUIRKY SHOPS, ETC? I like any town that has a great place to walk. I’ll go for hours and walk 10 or 12 miles. NYC or Venice Beach L.A. are my favorites. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO GET INTO BROADCASTING? WAS THE NBA ALWAYS THE GOAL? I was always glued to the radio listening to Top 40 stations or baseball broadcasts. Usually the old-time greats like Harry Cary, Jack Buck, Bob
Prince and Dan Kelly. Our high school station had a 400-watt FM station, so we could take a class and actually go on radio. That’s where I did my first play by play. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU FEEL YOU’VE IMPROVED ON SINCE JOINING THE TRAIL BLAZERS BROADCAST TEAM? I’m always trying to improve in some way on or off the air. We should always strive to improve our lives and those around us. It’s sometimes a tedious process. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GET INTO SPORTS BROADCASTING? Read anything and everything. Write. If it’s play-by-play you want to do, sit in the bleachers at a high school game and talk into your phone recorder. Play it back. Repeat that process 10,000 times. You’ll get the hang of it. ◆

I VOLUNTEER TO DRIVE, BUT I’M THE ONE WHO GETS THE PICK-ME-UP. Volunteer drivers are needed for the Road To Recovery program.
One of the biggest roadblocks to cancer treatment can be lack of transportation. That’s why the American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program provides patients in need with free rides to treatment. Our volunteers have provided hundreds of thousands of rides for patients, but the need for drivers continues to accelerate. While we have some requirements for drivers, the biggest bump in the road is a willingness to help. Volunteer now, and help give patients a much-needed ride. You might be surprised by the pick-me-up you get in return.

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • BLAZERDANCER FEATURE
ALEXIS YEARS AS A BLAZERDANCER: 3
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO DANCE? I started dancing when I was in second grade and instantly found a connection to it. The older I got the more I wanted to improve. There is never a ceiling to reach in dance, so knowing you can always improve and grow is something I find really special about dance. I’m always inspired to try new styles and push myself to continually grow in dance. I do this by taking classes every chance I get. Over the summer I took a trip down to LA to do a week intensive at Millennium Dance Complex. I’ve been watching videos produced from this studio for years, so it was incredibly inspiring to finally take classes at a place where so many influential people in dance have gone through. WHAT ARE SOME LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW? I played soccer and softball as a kid, but I was dancing on the field so at the end of the day my mom realized she needed to put me in dance classes. My very first dance performance, I was three years old, and I ran off the stage. My family speaks a Spanish dialect called Tarascan. If I could, I would eat shrimp and pizza every day. I lived in Hawaii for two and a half years when I was little.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AS A BLAZERDANCER? I have two standout moments while being on the team. My first one was during my rookie year. We performed a staple routine of the BlazerDancers, “American Woman” for Military Appreciation Night. I have seen this routine performed by some of my dance instructors growing up, so it’s been something I have wanted to do for a long time. Also, we got to wear the American flag uniforms that go with the routine! My second memorable moment was this year at camp. We were lucky enough to fly down to LA as a team and our coach brought in amazing choreographers for us to work with. Staying together as a team made us bond quickly. By the time we few back home, I really felt like I was coming home with my second family. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I love spending time with my dog whenever I have downtime at home. She's getting a little old now, so if I can get her to play or just hang out with her it’s always special to me. I also love to draw and bullet journal my schedule. There’s something about it that I find so relaxing - making something creative while I can organize my life. IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO ASPIRING YOUNG DANCERS, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM? Your dreams are never too big or impossible. Use anything that makes you feel defeated as motivation to work harder to make those dreams achievable.
