It’s been a process, it’s been a tough year so far, but I think I’m feeling the best I’ve felt so far this year. GET AN INSIDE LOOK OF WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE CAMERA FOR EVERY TRAIL BLAZERS TELEVISION BROADCAST WITH DIRECTOR OF BROADCASTING JEFF CURTIN AND TELEVISION PRODUCER DAN HYATT How did you get into Broadcasting?
What do you do to prepare for a gameday?
JEFF CURTIN: I started as an engineering major at Oregon State. During my freshman year stumbled across the OSU campus TV station KBVR-TV. I walked around the facility, met a few students working in the TV studio and then changed my major the next term, I was hooked. After graduating in Broadcast Media at OSU (1991), I secured the summer internship with Blazers Broadcasting and I have been here ever since!
JC: Gamedays are very busy and make for a long work day. The night before I try and familiarize myself with the next opponent. I read the game notes, online preview articles and watch their last game’s broadcast on NBA league pass. This helps me learn the opponents story lines, injury reports and who’s been playing well for them lately.
DAN HYATT: I got my degree in television production and worked for news stations to start my career. I started doing sports in the early 90’s, and instantly knew that was what I wanted to do. I started as a replay operator doing college events, then was able to get into doing some Trail Blazers games in 1992. My first job as director was at Channel 12. Jeff Curtin gave me the opportunity to produce the pregame show for the Blazers in 2013, and I did that for a few years before getting the full-time job as game Producer. Best job I’ve ever had!
28
DH: The producer is responsible for all content and story lines during a broadcast, so I spend a lot of time watching NBA games, and researching stats and stories for the Blazers and our opponent for each game. We have a ton of partnership inventory that we run in our shows, so I spend a couple of hours making sure we integrate those into our broadcast at the right time. On gameday, we do a broadcast production conference call seven hours prior to air time, where digital, radio, pregame and the game broadcast crew all get on the phone and talk about our storylines for the night and run through our shows. This helps us to make sure we are aligning our narratives across all our platforms.
What’s something you do daily that the fans likely don’t know about?
favorite is Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It has that “Hoosiers” mystique to it. And the concourse is really cool.
JC: It takes around 35 broadcast staff to produce each pregame and game telecast. They arrive at Moda Center at 1pm and leave around 11pm each home game.
What is your favorite part of working with the Blazers?
DH: Most people are shocked to learn is that there is a minimum of four crews working on four different shows at every home game. We have something like 75 technical staff working between the home show, the visit show, the pregame show, and the In-house show (what you see on the big screen in the arena at Moda). The home and visit broadcasts each have their own television trucks that are parked in the loading dock—this is also the case when we go to other arenas. Describe the culture / dynamic in the Broadcast Truck
JC: I love the excitement of working for a sports team. The highs and lows of each game are fun, and each night it’s a new story and opportunity. But the best part is my coworkers, everyone is very passionate in every part of their job, and they motivate me each day to keep pushing forward and make it better. DH: It has to be the people. We spend more time together during the six months of the season than we do with our families. I also love the travel. The job can be very exhausting, and the hours really long, but we are treated so well on road trips that it makes it manageable.
JC: I try and create a team collaboration atmosphere with the broadcast crew. Great ideas can come from anyone and you never know who might come up with a great story, image or concept for the broadcast. The live coverage of the game gets crazy during the telecast. The game moves very fast and changes within seconds. The art of being able to adapt to those situations and trust your technical crew is crucial. The pace is so fast that being able to communicate what you need in a very short amount of time is always a challenge. We do have a fantastic group of technicians that work on each broadcast, and many are my good friends and have been working on the crew longer than myself. DH: We have a pretty amazing group of people that work with us every game. Every person on our crew is very good at their jobs. Couple that with the great relationships that we all have the broadcast team (Kevin, Lamar and Brooke) and it shows on the air. We aren’t afraid to laugh at ourselves, keep it light, and have fun. I truly believe we have the best staff and crew in the NBA, and that includes all of the production and technical people that we bring in every game. What’s your favorite arena? (besides Moda Center, of course.) JC: I like going to Madison Square Garden in New York and the Pacers Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indiana, both have great basketball history. This is my 20th season traveling with the team. Although it’s tough being away from my family during the season, it much easier when you really enjoy the team and friends you travel with each road game. DH: Everyone always says Madison Square Garden. It’s a very historic building and always cool to be there, except it’s really old, and very hard to get to the floor from our truck. My
What advice would you give someone trying to enter the Broadcast industry? JC: My advice would be to get involved in your interested area: news, sports, marketing. Find a job shadow with someone in the industry, or a volunteer position on a production. Meeting new people can potentially lead to opportunities for future employment. Internships are always a great way to get that “foot in the door”. Many of my former interns now work on our nightly broadcast team. This industry can take you in many different areas, I found that trying new things will open your eyes to your real passion. DH: I tell students all the time—they need to learn as many skills in as many different positions as possible. Never say no to an opportunity, no matter how menial it may seem. Hands on experience is the only way you can learn the business and figure out what you love to do the most. There are so many paths you can take to getting into television and video production, but you have to get experience in order to know what you want to pursue.

FROM THE BROADCASTERS PERSPECTIVE WITH TELEVISION ANALYST LAMAR HURD, TELEVISION PLAY-BY-PLAY KEVIN CALABRO AND SIDELINE REPORTER BROOKE OLZENDAM What’s something about the broadcast process that fans likely don’t know about? LAMAR HURD: The day prior to each game, we as a broadcast team discuss what we most think we should feature in our pregame and show open. Some other teams’ broadcasts just use their producer’s suggestion; some just use their announcers’ suggestions; we at Trail Blazers Broadcasting always come to a collective agreement in regards to the content we display. KEVIN CALABRO: I think what fans don’t realize is that sitting at court level doesn’t guarantee we’ll see every play, because coaches and players will often stand in front of us. That’s why we have two monitors in front of us but they’re one foot by one foot, not a 52-incher like some fans at home! BROOKE OLZENDAM: Fans might not realize all the preparation that goes into a broadcast. Our producer Dan, and Kevin and Lamar and I communicate the day before a game about what we want to focus on in pregame, as well as in-game. I am also texting Dan throughout the day about things I would like to talk about in game. What’s it like working with Dan and Jeff? LH: It is as simple as can possibly be imagined. Both of them are great about setting expectations, and then giving us the freedom from there to do our job. Communication has to be great between the truck and the talent on the floor, and we all feel that we have a seamless process in everything we do. The two of them are great about following the conversation from us throughout the game, and then providing supporting camera angles, graphics, etc. based on what we’re saying. We’re blessed to have them as our director and producer!
upcoming features and elements we want to get aired. I’m kind of the on-air traffic controller. Dan gives me options as I do play by play and I decide on the fly. I leave space open so Lamar can get in and make his points and observations and stories. BO: Working with Dan and Jeff is THE BEST. They are organized and professional, but calm and so easy to work with. They value my opinion and support me every day. Most important, we have fun working together! What’s the most difficult part of the broadcast for you? LH: A technical aspect of the broadcast that’s challenging is when Dan is communicating with me in my ear while Kevin is also communicating with me over the air – I have to be able to hear them simultaneously and respond to both of them in a timely manner. Sometimes I’m not able to hear one of them, and I have to make the best possible guess as to what I think they may have said. Another challenging part of broadcasts takes place whenever the Trail Blazers are losing by a large margin. We as the announcers feel bad for the players and wish they weren’t getting blown out, and in addition to that, we feel bad for the fans that they have to witness it. But, it’s a part of the game – and the Trail Blazers have been on the positive side of many of those blowouts. It’s probably the most difficult part of the broadcasts because sometimes you have to be creative in conversation, while also staying true to whatever may be happening in the game. BO: The most difficult part is trying not to talk Dan and Jeff’s ears off during the game. I forget they are doing incredibly important work in the truck, and I just want to talk about every play. t
KC: Jeff and Dan are communicating with us with stats, suggestions on replays and reminding me about what 31
