RIP CITY TONIGHT'S QUOTE: “He's fearless. A lot of times when we talk about players being fearless, you think about taking a big shot or stepping up in that way. But I mean, it's just being able to go out there and compete against the best... That's the kind of person and player he is.” —DAMIAN LILLARD ON ANFERNEE SIMONS

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • STUNTER FEATURE

KYLIE YEARS AS A STUNTER: 1

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO STUNT? Being from Hawaii, we don’t have professional sports teams. Sometimes I don’t realize it, but what I’m doing is a huge accomplishment. My friends and family from home show me so much support and love for doing something that I love at the professional level. What inspires me to stunt is being able to inspire others with less opportunity than most to work for their dreams and accomplish big things. WHAT ARE SOME LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW? I love cooking and baking for people, especially when I can play my music and dance around the kitchen.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AS A STUNT TEAM MEMBER? Performing with my team, BlazerDancers and Rip City Crew on Opening Night. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Dancing, singing and writing songs and poetry. IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO ASPIRING YOUNG STUNTERS, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM? If you love what you do, then always find the fun in it, especially on the days that make you want to quit.

t e e m

WILLEN SIN MANAGER OF GAME OPERATIONS & EVENTS DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AND WHAT YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES ARE WITH THE TRAIL BLAZERS ▶ I have game operations and events in my job title, so there’s two sides of the role. The game operations side is managing the flow, logistics and execution of the run of show for each given game night. This includes organizing pregame festivities, on-court experiences, time-out promotions, anthem singers, halftime performers and a variety of other in-game elements. On the events side, I’m responsible for coordinating and executing any major marketing events, such as our Rip City 3-on-3 outdoor basketball tournament that we host on campus every summer, in addition to the Rip City Rally which is our season kick-off tour around the state. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE PART OF YOUR JOB? ▶ My most memorable, yet truly terrifying, moment was being able to orchestrate the surprise for Todd Bosma’s (aka my boss) 20th anniversary celebration on the court. Those who have worked with Todd are aware of his understanding of the game script: Nothing gets past him. So, to implement and execute a surprise behind his back was difficult.

28

Thankfully, the surprise went perfectly. The moment he was able to share with his family and all of Rip City at center court was easily one of the highlights of my career. WHICH TRAIL BLAZERS/ROSE QUARTER EVENT IS YOUR FAVORITE TO WORK ON, AND WHY? ▶ Is this a trick question? Can’t go wrong with any Trail Blazers games! Every game is a new show and event. You never know what to expect and coming out victorious makes it that much sweeter.

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • EMPLOYEE FEATURE

Although I will say one of the more exciting events I look forward to every year is our Rip City Rally tour. For the past seven years, we pick five cities to visit outside of Portland to kick off the season. It is an amazing opportunity for our ambassadors and staff to engage with fans that can’t come to our games as often. Overall, it is a great group of people, hosting a great event, having a great time with Rip City. IF YOU WEREN’T IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? ▶ Who knows! Probably frantically trying to learn how to animate so I could go work for Pixar or something. My dream job is to be a motivational speaker, so I might have ventured down that path. Though I am not sure what that entails.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE ASPIRING TO BE IN YOUR POSITION? ▶ Don’t be one dimensional. Game operations isn’t a specific skill set you learn or master, it encompasses a little bit of everything from communications to crisis management to event operations. I’d also add the sooner you realize that nothing will ever be perfect, the more fun you’ll have. So being able to be adaptable is key. The world of entertainment is always evolving, so the quicker you can pivot, the more ahead of the game you’ll be. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HAPPY HOUR SPOT IN PORTLAND? ▶ A friend’s house. WHAT TV SHOW ARE YOU CURRENTLY BINGE-WATCHING? ▶ Not a big TV show fan – more about the movies. I got Disney+ recently so I’m reliving my childhood. ripcity est. 1970

Here at the Rose Quarter

Celebrating Five Decades of Extraordinary Employees You’re probably used to seeing Moda Center staff out and about at games and events – but the Rose Quarter’s success is also due in large part to those behind the scenes. That’s where Robert Crandall comes in. Robert, a Facility Security Agent, has been with the Rose Quarter for 16 years now.

ROBERT CRANDALL

“When I applied in 2004, my experience wasn’t in security, but in management. They really liked how poised I was, and I’ve been able to carry that over.”

Robert’s main priority is protecting the fans and the building. “I know this place inside and out. I can look at a keyhole and know exactly which key goes in there.” On event days, he oversees arena safety, whether that’s fixing fire alarms or making sure nothing suspicious is happening on campus. Other days he will cover the dispatch post. “Dispatching is when all calls are directed to you. If there’s a medical emergency, I’m the one contacting the medical techs. I coordinate with safety inspectors or make sure housekeeping is where they need to be.” Robert also helps fans after the games or shows. “I’ll often walk all around the parking garage with people who are lost or can’t find their cars. I’m a firm believer that if you treat people with kindness, it’ll come back to you.” There have been plenty of events in the 16 years since Robert arrived, but the craziest one was his first-ever event in 2004. “It was Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey’s three ring circus. They shut down the parking garage and anchored the elephant cages into the wall. The tigers were in the annex garage, and I remember the giraffes and lions walking through the loading dock. It was a circus (no pun intended) but that’s when I knew this was going to be an amazing experience working here.” If you happen to bump into Robert in the parking garage or elsewhere, be sure to say hello and thank you for all of his years of service!
