COACH TERRY STOTTS HOW DO YOU THINK THE RIP CITY FANS SUPPORT YOU AND THE TEAM? ▶ I have always been impressed with the Portland fans, even before I came to Portland. They’re knowledgeable and they’re passionate about their team. There’s no question when we go into Moda Center every night; we know they’re going to be behind us. HOW DOES COACHING IN PORTLAND COMPARE TO OTHER CITIES AND TEAMS YOU HAVE COACHED? ▶ It starts with the fanbase and their support of the team: it’s there every night. It’s easy to support a team when you’re winning 50-60 games per season, but throughout my eight years in Portland, that is the thing that stands out to me. I love Portland as a city, obviously. It’s not a big city, but it’s the perfect city for me.

28

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • COACHES FEATURE

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO COACH THE TEAM FOR THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON? ▶ Coaching during the 50th Anniversary season is a special experience because of the history of the franchise. I think of the coaches I have admired in the past, Jack Ramsay and Rick Adelman in particular, the history of the franchise, the success, making the playoffs 21 years in a row, winning a championship. To be a part of those 50 years is special. THUS FAR, WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT WITH THE TRAIL BLAZERS? ▶ I think the biggest accomplishment thus far would be making it to the Western Conference Finals. To be one of the last four teams playing and for that to be the first time the Trail Blazers have been to the Western Conference Finals in nearly 20 years is a team accomplishment. To me, the rewards of coaching are to see the player development (and we have been pleased with the way many players have developed through the years) but as a team accomplishment, that would be it. ripcity est. 1970

29

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS COACH OF THE PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS? ▶ Guiding a team through losing is always the biggest challenge. You’re going to have losing streaks. At the end of my first season, we lost 13 in a row. Even though we were a young team, that’s challenging. In my fourth season in 2015-16, we were seven games under .500 in January and trying to keep everything afloat. We ended up salvaging that season and having a very good year, but I think that is the most challenging part of being a coach in the league: navigating and guiding your team throughout difficult times. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO COACH TWO SUPERSTARS IN CJ AND DAMIAN WHO ARE BOTH SO COMMITTED TO THIS CITY AND THIS TEAM? ▶ Neil Olshey has done an outstanding job of drafting talent, and Dame and CJ are two obvious examples of that. He drafts good players and he drafts good people. To have players like Dame and CJ commit to the franchise and the city speaks well of the city and the franchise. And, obviously, to compete every year in this league, you need to have talent. We’re very lucky to have two guys like them. WHO HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION THROUGHOUT YOUR COACHING CAREER? ▶ From a coaching standpoint, the two biggest influences on me would be the two

30

men I coached under for the longest time. One being George Karl. He and I go back to the CBA and I was with him in the NBA in both Seattle and Milwaukee. He had probably the biggest impact on me as a coach. Also, going to Dallas and being with Rick Carlisle for four years and seeing a different way of going about a job: being passionate about it but showing me a different way to be a head coach in this league really influenced me, as well.

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • COACHES FEATURE

IF YOU WERE NOT COACHING, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING FOR YOUR PROFESSION? ▶ It would depend on when you asked me that question. Out of college, I was accepted into dental school and had every intention of going after graduating from Oklahoma. But I wanted to pursue basketball and was drafted in the second round. Had I been drafted in the fourth or fifth round, I would probably be a dentist today. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES, OUTSIDE OF BASKETBALL? ▶ During the season I do not have a lot of hobbies. In the off-season, I golf (though not as much as I used to) and I love to travel and

see new places and new things. I like to go to movies and try to see every Academy Award winning movie, though I haven’t been to as many as I used to. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT PORTLAND? ▶ I don’t know if I have a favorite thing about Portland, but I like the size of the city and I like the uniqueness of the city. It is beautiful with the mountains and green, the variety of restaurants and the people are great.
