Our own Brooke Olzendam is sharing her personal story of loss that fuels her passion for heart health. ‘Brooke Hearts Your Heart’ launches February 2020 with a mission to spread awareness about the importance of AEDs in saving lives and raise funds for the American Heart Association. Through this program, Brooke will share her experience to encourage Trail Blazers fans to learn more about heart health and support the American Heart Associations critical programming. Go to trailblazers.com/heart to donate to the American Heart Association and the Trail Blazers will match the first $5,000 in donations. This is for me to tell my story, my husbands’ story, my husband’s family’s story. I wanted to share this story because if there is a possibility it could help even one person, it’s worth it. My husband, who passed away 10 days after we married in 2010, had a heart attack on a treadmill while he was working out. He was just 27 years old. He was a collegiate and professional athlete in perfect health – it doesn’t make sense that a 27-year-old in great health would pass away from a heart attack. I couldn’t help but think maybe there were some signs I overlooked that I didn’t even know were signs. He didn’t have any heart disease in his family, so it was shocking and devastating to all of us. 28
Now at this point in my life, I want to put it out there that there are signs that you can look for to see if there is something going on with your heart that you don’t know about, even if it doesn’t run in your family. This is my love letter to Andy and to the American Heart Association – to put this out there and hopefully help somebody. We were in Florida, and I had just taken a job with CBS Sports. They put us in a hotel while we were looking for a place to live. That night we were supposed to go out to dinner with my new colleagues and new boss. We had about 45 minutes to get ready and Andy wanted to get a quick workout in and he’d meet me in the lobby. I was waiting for him in the lobby, and

and was able to explain what happened and provided me a ton of support. My mom and aunt came and took me back to the hotel, then Andy’s father arrived to take care of things. It’s amazing to see friends and family step up in a time of crisis, I’m so thankful.
I started to wonder where he was – he was never late, and it was odd. I remember having a bad feeling. I called him and he didn’t pick up. I texted him and he didn’t respond. Then I heard sirens pull up outside, and I just knew something terrible had happened.
The next couple months were very hard. I ended up declining the job offer in Florida, as I couldn’t stay there without Andy. I went home to my mother’s house in Spokane and I spent a lot of time in bed. As time passed, I started thinking about how big of a supporter Andy was in my career. I knew he would’ve wanted me to get back to work. That is what helped me return, and what helped me really mourn him and move forward. I’ll never fully recover, but I was able to be at peace with it through work, knowing I was doing something he fully supported. I want to do something to help. I want to do something to try to make sure this doesn’t
I got a call from his phone, and it was someone with the EMTs telling me to come outside, and whoever’s phone they were calling from had a heart attack and was on his way to the hospital. I ran outside and jumped in the fire truck and went to the hospital. I went in and they were working on him. I got to be with him and stand next to him and hold his hand. I just had this feeling… it just looked like he was going away. Finally, they told me he was gone. It was shocking and I don’t remember much after that. I had to call my mother and his sister, so his sister could tell the rest of the family. I’ll never forget how amazing the hospital staff was – the nurse took the phone ripcity est. 1970

happen to someone else. The most important takeaways: • Know the warning signs. When Andy would come back from a workout – a professional athlete, in perfect health, ate well, took care of his body – he would be exhausted from a run. After the fact, the doctors told me that he was exerting ten times the amount of energy that someone else would to run or workout. I wish I would’ve known this was a sign, and we would’ve gotten it checked out. When in doubt, always go see a doctor. • When you go through something like this, you really need to talk to a professional; it will be beneficial to you. That helped me more than anything. • Defibrillators are so important. Everyone should have one in their home, business, gyms… I want to make sure people know how to use them, and to get them everywhere they can be. This could save someone’s life. 30
I’ve been living with this for almost ten years, and I decided this was the right time to talk about it publicly. The last three and a half years I’ve been working with the Trail Blazers I’ve felt a sense of family, acceptance and support. The fanbase is incredible and like family to me, and this is a way for me to give back to Rip City. The American Heart Association is so important to me, and I want to raise awareness and funds to help save lives.
TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • BROOKE HEARTS YOUR HEART
I’ve come to a place now where I’ve accepted what happened. You never forget or truly recover, but with time you improve and you get to a better place. My message to someone who has been through something similar to this – you may never make sense of it. Give yourself some grace, give yourself some time. Let yourself feel what you’re feeling. Ask for help. It can be overwhelming, but when you get to the place where you’re able to talk about it and able to receive help, please take it. You can’t do this alone. I tried. It’s impossible. This is now part of your journey – you will learn from it. When you get to a place when you’re at peace, try to see if that situation can help someone else. Talking about it and trying to get something positive out of something so negative is the best thing you could do. ❖

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT Rip City brings people together to create lasting memories through the power of sports and entertainment. Our organization has an opportunity and responsibility to positively impact our staff, players, fans, and community. As such, we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organization and our community, which includes: • Providing a safe and welcoming environment that champions differences and embraces the respectful open expression of ideas that are free from hateful, racist, profane, violent or harassing behaviors or comments. • Ensuring that our policies, practices and programs consider and seek to address societal inequities that disproportionately impact specific groups. • Utilizing our platform and resources to positively impact people throughout our community who have been underserved. • Cultivating a staff that reflects the community we serve and an inclusive culture where multiple perspectives are valued. We ask that you join us in this journey, and that you continue to advance this work within your own sphere of influence. We are all in this together—after all, we are all part of Rip City.

The Trail Blazers are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of children and families who have been historically underserved, where they live (environmental sustainability), learn (education), and play (sport and physical activity). The Trail Blazers Foundation gives grants and scholarships to nonprofits, schools, and students and is funded through meaningful corporate partnerships and revenue from Trail Blazers license plate sales, 5050 raffle, retail programs, and other fundraising efforts. During the 2018-19 season, Trail Blazers Inc. and the Trail Blazers Foundation donated over 1 million dollars to support youth across Oregon and SW Washington.
The Trail Blazers believe our home court extends far beyond the arena and everything we do in our lives makes an impact, so we encourage fans to join us in our efforts to protect our planet and our community to ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
The Trail Blazers are committed to seeing all youth graduate from high school by supporting programs, investing resources, and raising awareness of successful youth and the schools and organizations that help them effectively navigate their academic journeys.
The Trail Blazers are committed to ensuring that youth have positive early experiences playing basketball by running year-round camps and clinics, supporting existing programs, and investing resources in the community that provide access to sport. www.trailblazers.com/community
COMMITTED TO MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE, WITH A SMALL FOOTPRINT.
Moda Center is the first existing arena to receive LEED O+M (v4.1) Platinum Certification, a major milestone in the greening of sports. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification identifies and rewards best practices for a building's energy, water, waste, transportation and human experience.
