HISTORY OF THE TRAIL BLAZERS

I LOVE A PARADE Portland’s seven-year-old franchise, in the NBA playoffs for the first time in 1977, did what only one other team in league history had ever done: win an NBA Championship in its first postseason appearance. More than 100,000 fans jammed downtown streets on the Monday following the title game to celebrate.

Consecutive Trail Blazers playoff appearances from 1983 to 2003. It still stands as the third-longest run in NBA history.

814

21

Number of consecutive sellouts in the Trail Blazers’ NBA-record run from April 5, 1977 to November 20, 1995, at the time the longest run in American professional sports.

THE RAIN COAT Team founder Harry Glickman’s initial bid for an NBA team in Portland was unsuccessful. As he was leaving a Los Angeles hotel lobby on February 4, 1970, he remembered he’d left his raincoat in the meeting room. When he returned to retrieve it, there was a phone call awaiting him from new investors and sure enough he not only found his raincoat, but he found the financing for Portland’s new team.

28

51,51 Geoff Petrie, the original Trail Blazer did it not just once but twice, recording identical 51-point games within 56 days of each other, both against the Houston Rockets.

DREXLER/JORDAN The Trail Blazers put together a couple of Championship runs in 1990 & 1992, including the heated battle of Clyde “The Glide” Drexler and Michael “Air” Jordan.

155-156

The highest scoring game in club history, a four-overtime marathon in Portland on March 16, 1984. The Chicago Bulls got the win but only after the two teams combined for 118 field goals and 74 free throws in a game that lasted 3 hours and 24 minutes.

RIP CITY BABY A single phrase that has become the club’s heart and soul. Credit Bill Schonely, the voice of the Trail Blazers from 1970-98. “One night in our first season, we were playing the Lakers at home. We got way, way behind. Then, all of a sudden, shots started falling, the Trail Blazers are rallying and the place is jumping. We got within two point and had the ball - I’ll never forget when Jim Barnett took a long jumper. He swished the thing to tie the score and the coliseum exploded. The instant the ball hit the net, I hollered ‘Rip City!’ I’d never used the phrase before. But as soon as I said ‘Rip City,’ people near me at the press table chimed in right away, saying, ‘That’s good. You ought to leave it in your broadcasts.’ So I did.” And Rip City was born.

Damian Lillard scores a franchise-record 59 points against the Utah Jazz on April 8, 2017. The point total surpasses Damon Stoudamire’s previous team best of 54 points, set in 2005.

HISTORY OF THE TRAIL BLAZERS LOGO

HOW THE TRAIL BLAZERS GOT THEIR NAME

1970

Just two weeks after Portland was granted an NBA expansion franchise on Feb. 24, 1970, Harry Glickman, then executive vice president of the club, announced a public “name the team” contest. A panel of judges was selected. Harry said boxes and boxes of entries arrived at the team headquarters then located in a storefront office on S.W. Yamhill between 5th and 6th Avenues. “There had to be 10,000 entries at least,” he remembers. The Trail Blazers name was announced to a crowd of 11,035 during halftime of a March 13 regular season NBA SuperSonicsKnicks contest in the Memorial Colisuem. It was received, according to Oregon Journal Sports Editor George Pasero, with less than enthusiastic response including a spattering of boos. “It really wasn’t very popular when fans first heard it, but of course we all know that changed,” Glickman remembers. Newspaper concerns about the Trail Blazers name (“How would it ever fit in a headline, etc.”) quickly evaporated. And soon, the Blazers (or Trail Blazers) became a household word in Portland and within seven years worldwide as “Go Blazers” and “Blazermania” became bywords when the city gained a major world championship in its first try. “There were 172 people who sent in the name ‘Trail Blazers’,” Glickman said. The contest winner was determined by a drawing at the March 13 game. Blake Byrne, general sales manager of KPTV, was winner of the drawing, receiving two season tickets to Blazers home games that year.

THE LOGO The original logo was designed in 1970 and represents teamwork, unity and competition – the same values that reflect the spirit of Portland and the Pacific Northwest. Its lines represent the game of basketball: two teams of five players, coming together in competition. The movement and symmetry of the lines reflect the mechanics of the game. In its latest evolution, the logo’s lines have been connected to symbolize the Blazers working together as a team. Other recent changes include the angle of the lines shifting to exactly 45 degrees, representing the 45th parallel north that leads on a path to the Northwest region, our community and our hometown. The updated pinwheel is reminiscent of our original 70’s logo that was constructed with evenly spaced lines and congruent edges. Each of the lines follow the same trail to the center of the pinwheel and are now connected as an added symbol of teamwork.

30

The nickname was unique in professional sports at the time. No other major professional or university sports teams were using either the Blazers or Trail Blazers in 1970. The name, as Glickman noted at the time, “reflects both the ruggedness of the Pacific Northwest and the start of a major league era in our state.” Trail Blazers (or, more properly trailblazers) is defined by Webster as “One that blazes a trail to guide others: A pathfinder: A pioneer.” The actual name came from a practice by explorers making paths through forests and marking the paths by chopping white “blazes” in trees’ bark so others could follow. The term “trailblazing” is associated today with those on the cutting edge of discovery such areas as space exploration, science, medicine and technology. PRESENT

The Trail Blazers are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of children and families who have been historically underserved, where they live (environmental sustainability), learn (education), and play (sport and physical activity). The Trail Blazers Foundation gives grants and scholarships to nonprofits, schools, and students and is funded through meaningful corporate partnerships and revenue from Trail Blazers license plate sales, 5050 raffle, retail programs, and other fundraising efforts. During the 2018-19 season, Trail Blazers Inc. and the Trail Blazers Foundation donated over 1 million dollars to support youth across Oregon and SW Washington.

The Trail Blazers believe our home court extends far beyond the arena and everything we do in our lives makes an impact, so we encourage fans to join us in our efforts to protect our planet and our community to ensure a brighter future for generations to come.

The Trail Blazers are committed to seeing all youth graduate from high school by supporting programs, investing resources, and raising awareness of successful youth and the schools and organizations that help them effectively navigate their academic journeys.

The Trail Blazers are committed to ensuring that youth have positive early experiences playing basketball by running year-round camps and clinics, supporting existing programs, and investing resources in the community that provide access to sport. www.trailblazers.com/community

Here at the Rose Quarter

Celebrating Five Decades of Extraordinary Employees You’re probably used to seeing Moda Center staff out and about at games and events – but the Rose Quarter’s success is also due in large part to those behind the scenes. That’s where Robert Crandall comes in. Robert, a Facility Security Agent, has been with the Rose Quarter for 16 years now.

ROBERT CRANDALL

“When I applied in 2004, my experience wasn’t in security, but in management. They really liked how poised I was, and I’ve been able to carry that over.”

Robert’s main priority is protecting the fans and the building. “I know this place inside and out. I can look at a keyhole and know exactly which key goes in there.” On event days, he oversees arena safety, whether that’s fixing fire alarms or making sure nothing suspicious is happening on campus. Other days he will cover the dispatch post. “Dispatching is when all calls are directed to you. If there’s a medical emergency, I’m the one contacting the medical techs. I coordinate with safety inspectors or make sure housekeeping is where they need to be.” Robert also helps fans after the games or shows. “I’ll often walk all around the parking garage with people who are lost or can’t find their cars. I’m a firm believer that if you treat people with kindness, it’ll come back to you.” There have been plenty of events in the 16 years since Robert arrived, but the craziest one was his first-ever event in 2004. “It was Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey’s three ring circus. They shut down the parking garage and anchored the elephant cages into the wall. The tigers were in the annex garage, and I remember the giraffes and lions walking through the loading dock. It was a circus (no pun intended) but that’s when I knew this was going to be an amazing experience working here.” If you happen to bump into Robert in the parking garage or elsewhere, be sure to say hello and thank you for all of his years of service!
