DEAR FANS,
TUNDRA
LET’S GOOOOOOOOO! TOYOTA IS A PROUD PARTNER OF THE PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS
Prototype shown with options. The Tacoma is designed to meet most off-road driving requirements, but off-roading is inherently dangerous and may result in vehicle damage. Toyota encourages responsible operation to help protect you, your vehicle and the environment. Seatbelts should be worn at all times. Do not allow passengers to ride in cargo area.
THE FIRST OF TWO BY KATE CONROY
When I was in 6th grade my dad suggested I enter the drawing to be a 1975-1976 season Portland Trail Blazers Ballgirl. It would be the first time in Trail Blazers history two boys and two girls would be chosen instead of four boys. “You kidding? Of course!” I exclaimed. The next Saturday, Dad drove me down to the car dealership where kids could cast a chance for this huge honor. As we pushed open the glass doors, we were announced by the gentle jingle of a discrete bell hung overhead. In the same moment we were greeted by a gentle, air-conditioned breeze. After the bell quieted, this spaceship-style showroom was pin-drop quiet until a man came around from behind his desk to see what we needed. He gave me the four allotted cards, which I carefully filled out. Dad signed his parental permission to each of them. Using a dramatic gesture, after making a good wish, we added them to the already full barrel. As I waved good-bye and said a thank you to the salesman, he heartily wished me “Good luck!” This gave me high hopes.
As we pushed the doors open to head outside, I was hit with hot and muggy afternoon air mixed with the noisy grit of Sandy Boulevard traffic. The sad effect of the atmospheric shift was an instant drop in my optimism. While driving home, I wondered aloud if my best friend should enter, she was a better ball player than me, she really deserved to win. Or, maybe both of us could win. But dad warned me the odds of us both being picked were slim to none, and even one more person entering the pool would reduce my chances of winning. “If they don’t already know about it, why spread the word?” he suggested. In response to my shaky confidence, he insisted “Even if you don’t feel lucky, you deserved to win. You’re a good kid with a love of the sport.” I had played CYO basketball as a guard, but given my four-foot-eleven stature of limitations, I was beginning to realize I didn’t have much of a future playing the sport. Maybe being a Blazers Ballgirl would reconcile that disappointment. With that rationalization, I employed dad’s strategy to kept it quiet and suppressed my over-sharing impulse. After what felt like months later, my mom called me to the kitchen. She was beaming and reached out for a handshake saying, “I want to be the first to shake hands with the first ever Portland Trail Blazers Ballgirl!” Wow! No way! I had all but given up on winning that contest! My mom was ecstatic that I was part of a historic occasion of gender equity, something for which Portland may have been ahead of its time. On my first day, I met Cheri White who looked after me as one would a kid sister. She knew the Coliseum and showed me around. Her cheeriness and ease around everyone made me feel at home. My biggest challenge was shagging balls during

team warm-up to the tall pro players: Sidney Wicks, Lionel Hollins, Geoff Petrie, Lloyd Neal, Larry Steele and Dan Anderson. It looked so effortless for them on TV! Especially vexing were passes up the long key to LaRue Martin and Bill Walton who towered over me by a full two feet. Thankfully, all the players were patient and kind while I coordinated my speed and strength to get the ball back to them with only one bounce in the pass, rather than the two bounces it took me and the other ballkids on our first tries. Forget a chest pass – if I were even able to propel the ball that distance, it would have hit them just at the knees. I was thrilled to watch the games while being part of the action. As a ballkid, one of our main responsibilities was to wipe the floor after a player took a fall. I methodically figured out a system for it: Once the team headed toward the opposing basket, I rushed out to survey the hazardous sweat streaks left behind from the skirmish and wipe them up. With towel in hand, I swabbed the floorboards while feeling dribbling thumps and hearing sneaker squeaks fade toward the other end of the court. As long as they were moving away, I had time. As the stampede of players began their return it was my signal to finish up before they crossed the half court line. Interceptions were the most intense turnovers. The fading squeaks and thumps would suddenly halt, then I’d immediately feel the thunder of a break-away sprint coming my way, which meant to get out of the way! I’m proud to say I had no near misses or slip-ups.
under the basket watching the play. After the picture was published in the newspaper, people pointed out that he and I had the same long red hair, so we must be related. “Oh, yeah, she’s his little sister,” my dad would joke. With all the “hoopla” around the upcoming 50th anniversary, my mom called and urged me to reach out. “You are part of that history!” she exclaimed. I hadn’t seen it that way. Certainly, I had considered the Trail Blazers part of my history and my dad’s history. He was a dedicated fan who fully delighted in having access through the players’ entrance when picking me up from games. We shared a pride that we had been part of the season, BEFORE the Championship, BEFORE everyone would come to know what the great Dr. Jack Ramsay team was about to accomplish. My mom’s insistence made me recognize the small part I played in the 1975-76 season is not just part of my family history – my itty bitty, almost five-foot, one season, gender-equity contribution is part of Trail Blazers history too. ◆ KATE CONROY IS AN ARTIST, PLAYWRIGHT, FELDENKRAIS PRACTITIONER, AND LGBTQ+ ACTIVIST LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY WITH WRITER, MARTY CORREIA, HER PARTNER OF TWENTY-FIVE YEARS. Between mop-ups from my vantage point under the backstop, I was able to experience the game in ways few people are allowed. Even the sports photographers were restricted to an area behind us. One photographer captured Bill Walton snagging a rebound with me
