Steps for EMC Testing Preparation Analyze the EMC Requirements PCB and System Design for EMC Compliance EMC Design Review Pre-compliance Testing Preparing your SW and HW for Testing Final Testing

Step 1: Analyzing Requirements • Identify which test your device will have to pass

• Identify the ports that will be tested

• Understand the pass and fail criteria

EMC Test Plan An ‘EMC Test Plan’ includes the EMC test requirements to a specific product. There are 2 ways to get an EMC Test Plan:

• Contact your Testing Lab • Create one yourself

Step 2: PCB and System Design After identifying the EMC tests and its requirements, the next step is designing your product in such a way that it meets those requirements. Some of the questions that can be addressed under this step are:

• Is your ESD protection implemented correctly? • Have you used the correct rating of power supply adapter?

• Will surge testing be applied to your power supply? Etc. Mail: b.vi@itcindia.org

Step 3: EMC Design Review If you have completed the first 2 steps, you are about to get your first prototype of your product manufactured. Before you give a ‘Go Ahead’ sign to the manufacturing process, it is beneficial to do an EMC design review. EMC Design Review will help you to catch hidden errors in your design from an EMC perspective. Mail: b.vi@itcindia.org

Step 4: Pre-Compliance Testing When your design is near finalization, it is essential you do some EMC pre-compliance testing. If you want your pre-compliance testing results be an indication of how the final testing will go, it is essential that your device doesn’t change much between pre-compliance testing and final testing. If this step is accurate and comprehensive enough then you're going to have addressed the majority of EMC immunity and emissions issues before you get to final testing. Mail: b.vi@itcindia.org

Step 5: Preparing Software and Hardware It is important you send all the items that are required for final EMC Testing to save time and money. A list of items that need to be sent are given in the next slides.

Mail: b.vi@itcindia.org

Website: https://itcindia.org/emc-emi-testing/

List of Items to Send to Test Lab • Your product along with any peripheral equipment that make a part of the complete system.

• All the cables that are needed to exercise your equipment to the fullest extent. Cables should be of a typical length used in normal operation.

• Also provide a software test mode that exercises your equipment to its full extent. Regulatory agencies wish to know what 'worst case scenario' immunity and emissions performance is. This generally includes exercising all communication interfaces, all memory interfaces and all moving parts at the highest speed.

• Proper documentation for operating your product. If the test engineers don't know how to operate your product or set it up into the correct test mode, then the test schedule will be delayed.

• In the list of items that you will be sending to the EMC Testing lab, also include any supporting/optional equipment that might be needed for testing.

• Provide a monitoring method. For immunity testing, a lab needs to monitor the performance of your product. It is helpful for EMC test labs if you clearly mention the method by which you would like your product to be monitored.

• Send 2-3 alternative 'backup' power supply units. This is useful if you fail conducted emission testing. Swapping an external power adapter with a better performing adapter can often solve conducted emissions problems. More adapters can also come handy if you're doing surge testing, which can be destructive to power supplies. Mail: b.vi@itcindia.org

Step 6: Final EMC Testing When you have your final production units in your hand, its time for the final SHOWDOWN!! This is where your product will be put through a range of tests identified earlier (in the EMC Test Plan) by an EMC Testing Lab.
