Gangway handling tip 2:

Bulletin # 122: 16 Oct - 23 Oct 2017

Gangway handling tip of the week: Plan your work – work your plan! Did you know there are two different types of wharf lever action gangways? Do you know what the difference is? Made of: Carbonfiber decks and stainless steel hand rails.

Made of: Fiberglass decks and stainless steel hand rails. Weight: Ranging from 120 – 180 kg

Weight: Ranging from 75 – 130 kg

Length: 3.5m

Length: 3.5m

Width: 89 cm (internal)

Width: 89 cm (internal)

Action: Gas strut assisted lever action

Action: Gas strut assisted lever action.

Why the weight variation? Damage requires repairs – this adds to the weight. The fiberglass models are being transitioned out and will be replaced with the carbon-fiber ones. Now you know the weight differences, plan your work and use the correct Manual Handling Technique! Remember! Let the gas strut do the ‘WORK” – if the strut is not helping, it may need replacing. Make sure you report all damaged gangways so they can be repaired as soon as possible.

Feedback on other hazards and issues raised: • You may have noticed the “Safety Notice Boards” have some new content, and are missing some of the old regular content – PLEASE CHECK THE SHORE DAY FILE FOR– WHS Committee meeting minutes, Weekly Safety Bulletin, Monthly Toolbox Talks, Safety Alerts, and other Corporate Communications

A passenger (P1) tripped when hurrying to depart the Louise Savage at Watsons Bay and fell into the water, P1 was pulled from the water by the GPH and 2 other passengers, P1 was uninjured. Well done to the vessel crew for remaining calm and keeping the vessel from crushing P1 against the wharf during the rescue.

Whilst refuelling the Alexander the High Level Alarm sounded. The fuel supply was immediately shut off, the fuel tank levels were checked, the vessel alarm system was checked and a fuel “sender unit” was changed out. Well done to the crew for your quick action and averting an environmental incident.

A section of wharf (sleeper) is protruding on CQ J3 west and ropes are catching when tying up, a request to wharf maintenance has been submitted to rectify the issue.

FOCIS issues on several vessels and wharfs has been logged and forwarded to TfNSW. Please continue to report focus issues to your line manager and we will continue to speak with TfNSW for rectification

Security at Work. What is a chemical weapon? Defined as “weapons using the toxic properties of chemical substances, rather than their explosive properties, to produce physical or psychological effects on victims”. What are the indicators? At times there may be no obvious indicators because chemical agents all act differently. However, there are some common indicators you may observe / experience that may raise your suspicion. This may include potentially contaminated groups of persons exhibiting signs / symptoms such as but not limited to: • Watery eyes, eye irritation, coughing, vomiting, • Breathing difficulties and other respiratory irregularities, • Skin irrational, • Collapse, unconscious or death. If you see this and there is no logical explanation, it may be an indicator of a chemical reaction / interaction. What can we do? Undertake regular White Level Check, if something is discovered apply H.O.T. or Not principle and know your roles and responsibilities in relation to emergency & evacuation plans for you and our customer. If in doubt, apply the 1 down – 2 down rule, one person goes down (faints), followed shortly by a second person, it may be a Chemical Weapons situation and time to leave the area.
