1.0 What is Google Chrome? 2.0 Chromebook vs. Windows PC 3.0 The Series 5 Chromebook 4.0 FAQ on Chromebooks

1.0 What is Google Chrome? The Cloud, Chrome and how we use it‌

1.1

What is the benefit of the cloud?

With all your precious data in the cloud you never have to worry about it, it’s always safe without the need to remember regular backups. Wherever

With all your data stored in the cloud instead of a local hard disk, you can access what you need no matter where you happen to be.

Whenever

Having your data in the cloud means that you’re always working on the latest documents, looking at the latest calendar entries and accessing your latest emails whenever you need them.

Whatever

Data stored in the cloud can be accessed from almost any internet enabled device, whether it is a notebook, a smartphone, a tablet etc. Key Points • Most consumers already use the cloud whether they know it or not – Gmail, Google Calendar, Hotmail, Xbox Live etc, are all examples of the cloud in action. • You don’t need to have internet access all the time to benefit from cloud based storage. Data is still stored on local devices, but will be synchronised with the cloud whenever internet access is available.

1.2

Chrome Browser: Your gateway to the web

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer and easier. Chrome browser The Chrome browser can be used just like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari, but it’s a more powerful tool. You can completely customise it to your own needs and preferences. Whether that be installing custom extensions, web apps or just customising your home page.

Key Points • Chrome is the only browser developed with a rich multimedia experience in mind from the outset. • Chrome was designed specifically to run audio, video and even 3D graphics.

1.3

The Chrome Web Store

The Chrome Web Store is an online marketplace where you can discover thousands of apps, extensions and themes for Google Chrome. Web Apps

Extensions

Themes

Are advanced interactive websites. They may provide a wide-ranging set of features or focus on a single task like photo-editing or shopping.

1.4

Chrome: The Chrome based operating system

Chrome is the operating system designed specifically for users who do the vast majority of their computing online.

Chrome-based operating system Chrome is what the Chromebook runs. It’s a Linux platform with a Chrome front end, but the end result is an operating system that’s lightning fast, robust and easy to use.

Key Points • The Chrome based operating system is basically an extended browser. If someone can use a Web Browser, they can use Chrome and can therefore use a Chromebook. • Focus on the fact that Google’s software is free. The Chromebook will always be updated, will always be running the latest version and will always sport the latest features without costing the user a penny.

1.5

Chromium: The open source OS

Google Chrome is an eco system for the internet, the first of it’s three forms is Chromium, the developer platform for content creation. Chromium is the open source platform of Google Chrome. Google released Chromium so that developers could build on the Chrome platform to create new apps, plug-ins and Chrome based environments. The release of Chromium makes porting Chrome to new devices both easier and faster.

Key Points • The Chromebook is designed to be incredibly easy to use, but some consumers could be put off by the intricacies of Chrome and it’s various forms. It’s important to talk about Chrome as a single entity that does everything so as not to confuse the less technically aware.

1.6

Chromebooks

Nothing but the web. Chromebooks are built and optimised for the web, where you already spend most of your computing time. So you get a faster, simpler and more secure experience without all the headaches of ordinary computers.

Instant web Wi-Fi + 3G* = it just works Same experience everywhere

Amazing web apps Let friends log in Forever fresh Security built-in

Key Points • *3G is a factory option, not included as standard.

1.7

The Chromebook user profile App savvy

Heavy web users

These users are already familiar with appbased functionality, and will have a library of invaluable apps that they use every day. The Chromebook’s ability to run web apps will be very attractive to them.

The initial Chromebook buyers will live their lives on the web. They’ll already be making use of Google’s cloud-based services like Gmail, Google Docs etc.

Ready to run These users will already have Google accounts configured on their computers and probably their smartphone. Adding a Chromebook to their hardware stable will be quick and easy.

Early Adopter Target Chrome user will be an early adopter of all things tech, whether that be computers, phones or AV equipment.

Through a combination of data mining and its Chrome notebook pilot programme, Google knows exactly who the initial wave of Chromebook buyers will be.

Influencer The initial Chromebook user will be a major influencer among friends and work colleagues. This will be the person that others look to for tech advice – this person’s opinion of the Chromebook will influence many others.

Age The average Chromebook user will most likely be aged between 25 & 34 years of age.

Key Points • Getting the Chromebook into the hands of enthusiasts is paramount to its success. These people will demonstrate the device to friends, colleagues and anyone else who will listen. • The Chromebook needs to be experienced before a user can appreciate it.

2.0 Chromebook vs Windows PC Purpose built by design for the internet‌

2.1

Chromebook vs. traditional PC OS

The Chromebook may look like a traditional notebook, but it’s a very different device in many ways. Traditional operating system A notebook employs a full operating system that can run thousands of native, local applications like word processors, games and image editors.

Chrome based operating system The Chromebook runs a lightweight, browser based operating environment that is designed for online execution of applications, rather than running them locally.

Key Points • The notebook platform should not be criticised when evangelising the benefits of the Chromebook. The Chromebook is different not better. • The Chromebook is not necessarily an alternative to a standard computer. It’s more likely to be a secondary device, in a similar vein to a tablet.

2.2

Chromebook vs. traditional PC components

Thanks to its revolutionary design and operational model, the Chromebook simply doesn’t need to be running the latest, fastest, most powerful hardware.

Components A notebook requires high performance components in order to run all its software locally. As new programs are developed and launched, more powerful components are required to run them. Because the Chromebook uses web-based applications, the need for high performance components is greatly reduced. This means that the Chromebook is not subject to the traditional “PC slowdown” that occurs over the lifetime of a notebook. Key Points • Stress the fact that the more modest hardware spec of a Chromebook is not a negative – it doesn’t need powerful components to provide a fast user experience. • Although web based applications aren’t as familiar or as feature rich as regular locally executed applications, they have one big advantage – they’re free!

2.3

Chromebook vs. traditional PC storage

With a traditional notebook PC more is always better. The Chromebook is different, it simply doesn’t need the storage capacity of a notebook. Hard Disk A notebook is equipped with a high capacity local storage device, usually a mechanical hard disk. The hard disk stores the operating system, the local programs and applications and all the user data. The Chromebook stores its data in the cloud, so even if you damage or lose your Chromebook, all your data is safe and up to date.

Key Points • Linux based netbooks are still available with solid state storage, but they do not have the totally integrated cloud solution that the Chromebook has. • The Chromebook still has local storage, but it doesn’t require the kind of capacity that a notebook does. • Chromebook data is always safe in the cloud, even if the machine itself is damaged or lost.

2.4

Chromebook vs. traditional PC updating

With a traditional notebook keeping all your software up to date can be a pain, but the Chromebook is different. Automatic updates All your web apps and extensions will automatically update. The Chromebook will always be running the latest versions of your apps or extensions. There’s no need to configure or schedule anything, as soon as a newer version is available, the Chromebook will automatically download and install it.

Key Points • The Chromebook will check for updates whenever it is connected to the internet, so in theory the product will improve over time. • App updates are dependent on the app developer.

3.0 The Series 5 Chromebook Purpose built by design for the internet‌

3.1

Speed

“Instantly on, no waiting around”

Security

“Always there, safe and secure”

Long lasting

“Power to last the whole day”

Performance

“Optimised for what I do”

Connectivity

“Seamless internet access”

3.2

Simplicity…by design

Its stunning yet simple design footprint is key to the Chromebook. Purpose built by design, the Series 5 is the embodiment of this ethos. Simplicity • Lightweight, sleek design at 1.48kg • Ergonomic keyboard • Dedicated web browsing keys • 30% larger clickable touch-pad

Key Points • With the ideals focused on delivering the best web experience, the keyboard is large and comfortable with dedicated keys for web navigation. • Instead of a Caps Lock key, for example, there’s a Search key; there are also keys for layout that doesn’t cramp your fingers so you can get more done and make fewer errors. • To aid the browsing experience, we incorporated a 30% larger fully clickable Touchpad.

3.3

Speed…by design

The Series 5 boots in less than 10 seconds and resumes instantly into your favourite web applications. Fast boot Where the average out-ofthe-box laptop starts up in 45 seconds, the Samsung Series 5 starts up in less than ten seconds. When waking from sleep, a user simply opens the lid, and it’s ready to go. This means that wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, your computer wont slow you down.

Key Points • The average out-of-the-box laptop starts up in 45 seconds, the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook starts up in less than ten seconds. • When waking from sleep, a user simply opens the lid, and it’s ready to go. • Chromebooks are designed to get faster over time as updates are released, with full support for the latest web standards and Adobe Flash.

3.4

Security…by design

Your data is always safe in the cloud, while the Trusted Platform Module stops unauthorised access through a verified Boot Process. Traditional PC Applications have the same privileges and power that a user does.

Chromebook All applications are web based, the OS does not trust any application.

Key Points • Chromebooks run the first consumer operating system designed from the ground-up to defend against the on-going threat of malware and viruses. • They employ the principle of “defence in depth” to provide multiple layers of protection, including sandboxing, data encryption, and verified boot (through the use of a TPM Module). • The Chromebook has also reduced concerns about security and data loss by moving everything to the cloud. If the Chromebook is ever broken or lost, all of your files are saved online.

3.5

Long lasting…by design

The Series 5 is designed to deliver battery life that lasts the entire working day, with up to 8.5 hours connected use. Long Lasting Samsung’s class leading battery technology ensures that the Chromebook can provide a whole day of productivity. The lithium-polymer battery pack provides 8.5 hours of productivity use or 5 hours of video playback.

Key Points • The Series 5 Chromebook battery has a lifespan up to 1,000 cycles, three times longer than conventional batteries, which reduces the need for replacements. • With a 61Wh lithium-polymer battery and low power components, the Chromebook will give you 8.5 hours of on-the-go usage on a single charge, and that’s with Wi-Fi active!

3.6

Performance…by design

Samsung has designed the Series 5 Chromebook to give consumers a whole new web experience, the Chromebook is, quite simply, better by design. Performance & speed With a dual-core Intel processor, 2GB or memory and a 16GB SSD married to an ultra-efficient operating system, the Chromebook has all the performance a user will need. No hanging around. The Chromebook boots up in under 10 seconds and resumes almost instantly. The Chromebook is always ready to use.

Key Points • Stress the fact that the Intel Atom processor will produce far better performance in the Chromebook than it does in a netbook running Windows. • Samsung’s own 12.1 inch SuperBright display has 300nit brightness, its up to 40% brighter than traditional displays. • The non-gloss screen does affect black levels and colour vibrancy, but the ability to work in bright sunlight outweighs this.

3.7

Connectivity…by design

Delivering a seamless connected internet experience from Wi-Fi to 3G enabled versions of the Series 5 Chromebook Wireless The Chromebook sports the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, ensuring fast and secure connectivity. There’s also the option of integrated 3G to keep it online at all times, regardless of location.

Key Points • Samsung will have 2 SKU variants in each market, a Wi-Fi only version and a Wi-Fi + 3G variant. • Both devices support the latest 802.11n standard, our 3G enabled version is capable of 14.4mbps (based on the carrier network of course). • An optional VGA adaptor can connect to a second monitor or television, while audio inputs connect to a microphone, headphones or external speakers. • The HD Webcam completes the Series 5’s audio-visual connectivity package.

4.0 FAQ on Chromebooks Answered and addressed‌

4.1

Working offline with a Chromebook

Web apps are integral to the Chromebook, but some applications can still be used even when the device isn’t connected to the internet.

Offline Apps The Chromebook’s USP is that it uses online applications instead of software that’s locally installed on your computer. But certain applications can still be used when the Chromebook is offline, meaning that the user can still be productive or even be entertained when an internet connection is not available.

Key Points • The most important offline functionality will be Google’s suite of productivity apps – Google Docs. At present Google Docs does not function offline. • From July / August 2011 users will be able to create and edit Google Docs without the need for an internet connection. • Restate, the primary use case for Chromebooks is for people who spend the majority of their time online, practically living on the web. • Chrome also supports HTML5 offline functionality that allows applications or websites that support these features to run offline. Now available offline are heavily used apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, New York Times, etc.

4.2

Sharing your Chromebook

Unlike a regular notebook, the Chromebook can be shared between multiple users without the fear of anyone’s privacy being compromised.

Google login Access to the Chromebook is via your Google login credentials. Therefore multiple users can login with their own Google credentials and enjoy their own experience with no fear of accessing anyone else’s data.

Guest login

Key Points • No matter how many users share a Chromebook, all data is private to each individual login. • With web apps assigned to specific Google users, they won’t clutter up the experience for users who want a simple browsing session.

The guest login allows others to use your Chromebook without the need for a Google account. Guest login allows access to most of the Chromebook features, but web apps are not available. When a guest logs out, all history of their session is deleted.

4.3

Using a printer with a Chromebook

We don’t live in a paperless world yet, so even the Chromebook needs to be able to output to a printer.

Cloud Printing The Chromebook supports Google Cloud Print, which in theory means that you can send jobs to your printer from anywhere. Specific Google Cloud Print printers are available, but any printer can be utilised. Standard printers need to be connected to a PC or Mac that’s running the Cloud Print software within a Chrome browser.

Key Points • Chromebooks support Google Cloud Print which enables you to print from anywhere and to set up a printer in seconds without having to mess with drivers or other complicated settings. • At the time of writing (July 2011) Samsung does not yet make a Google Cloud Print compatible printer. If there is a model in the pipeline, customers should be made aware of it. • Users can either set up their existing printers to user Google Cloud Print or they can buy capable printers from manufacturers like ePrint.

4.4

Using external storage devices

Cloud storage is safe, secure and convenient, but sometimes you want to copy data from or to an external storage device.

Plug-in Storage USB sticks and external hard disks can be plugged into the USB ports and accessed directly from the Chromebook. Likewise, the integrated SD card reader means that SD and microSD cards can also be accessed. Key Points • You can plug in keyboards, mice, USB storage devices like SD cards, USB drives and cameras. • Chromebooks are upgraded and maintained automatically so new features will be delivered approximately every six weeks. • Data stored on external devices will not be backed up to the cloud.

4.5

Using an external monitor

The Chromebook screen is great, but if you need more desktop real estate you’ll want to hook up an external display. Larger Screen The Chromebook has a VGA D-SUB port, which means it can be connected to an external display or TV. You can use the Chromebook at your desk when you need a larger display, hook it up to a projector for a presentation, or output video and images to your TV for the whole family to view.

Key Points • There’s no HDMI, DVI or DisplayPort option for connecting the Chromebook to an external device digitally.

4.6

Synchronisation offline to online

Changes made on your Chromebook while offline will essentially mean different versions of documents, data or even apps appear. Thankfully that situation won’t last for long. Google Sync Any changes made to the Chromebook while it’s offline will be synchronised to the cloud the next time it connects to the internet. If a newer version of an app has appeared, the Chromebook will automatically update it, ensuring that the device is always running the latest versions and also that all new user data is safely stored in the cloud.

Key Points • Synchronisation is completely transparent to the end user, with no need to configure anything. • Any files or data created in offline mode are subject to loss if the Chromebook is damaged or stolen, until the device connects to the internet at which point all user data will be backed up to the cloud.
