SET IN STONE
A word from the publisher
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and we here at The Osider couldn’t agree more. So, what better way to start the New Year than reflecting on 2024 through the lenses of our local photographers with a photo issue.
That’s right, 100 percent pure eye candy shot solely right here in Oceanside by the best local lenses in town. Sure, we can all make outlandish resolutions of personal improvement and for those of you who have, I hope you stick to them and make them a reality. But, how about something a little more enjoyable, like perusing the highlights of 2024 through pictures?
That way, you can direct the narrative and etch them into your memories the way you want them to be remembered. That’s what looking at art is all about, right?
Sure, the world is a crazy place, but life here in the O is pretty dang amazing if you ask me. Our city continues to thrive and our culture is safely intact thanks to our very engaged community. Resolutions are great and all, but pictures stand the test of time and remind us of all the good things we have experienced up to this point in life.
Making this magazine is a passion for this reason alone. Capturing each moment along the
way and freezing forever in print for future generations to ponder and learn from is a gift. The internet comes and goes like the tides and wind, but magazines have a certain tangibility that is unmatched. Thank you all for continuing to support The Osider.
Happy New Year!

Oceanside's Finest
ROBERT PARKER
On a beautiful Saturday in December, the sounds of the piano being played by Robert Parker melodically awakened the Civic Center Plaza and halted the attention of all passing by, proving that music unites and belongs in public places.
As Oceanside’s Finest, Robert Parker brings art alive and incorporates the joy of music in Oceanside. Since his arrival in 2013, Parker has made an indelible mark on the arts scene in Oceanside.
With an unprecedented career, Parker advocates for all things art—art all the time, art everywhere! Why? Because he believes that art is the only way to heal. When words fail, language is a barrier and walls are up. Art is healing, and it speaks to the soul through the universal language of music.
His goal for Oceanside is, “extraordinary art in ordinary places.” Proving he’s Oceanside’s Finest, Parker is a board member of the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF), which incorporates Art Walls O’side, OCAF Spring Fest, Art of Music, Write On, Oceanside, and Oceanside Music Festival (OMFest). Parker is also a proud member of the City of Oceanside Arts Commission.
Robert Parker was born in Des Moines, Iowa, one of five children. He credits his parents with his love of music by providing access to instruments at a young age for all five children.
“My first instrument was the violin, piano, double bass, flute, and the tuba,” he explained. He received his Bachelor’s in Music Education from Drake University to become a band director, but he never made it to the classroom.
“My life has been this really absurd collection of opportunities and also a life of magic,” he described. He left Des Moines for the Ozarks, then to Minneapolis, and finally arrived in California in the early 1980s. His musical resume includes the Ozark Opry, North County Entertainment Music Awards “Best Jazz” Category (1984 PURL Band), and he has been inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the Iowa/ Midwest Music Heritage Hall of Fame.
Outside of music, Parker spent years working in Los Angeles in telecommunications, making six figures but not fulfilling his musical dreams. When he retired and arrived in Oceanside in 2013, he immediately went back to doing what makes his soul happy and connected with the local arts scene to lend a professional and helping hand.
Pushing for art corners, flash art, flash music, and art in public places; basically, creating community through the arts because Robert emphasized, “It might be the only thing that saves us. There’s a subcarrier in all art that gets embedded in all your creations, and you end up moving people in a way that you didn’t expect.”
For the future, the Oceanside Art Piano Project is on Parker’s 2025 agenda. “My big push is to get as many beautiful points of possibility out in our community. And some may be damaged or vandalized, but that is no excuse for not trying to inspire. Somebody who hasn’t touched a piano since childhood might find their inner child for a moment. To scrape away some cynicism that can build up like plaque. I hope to have at least eight pianos around town by June 2025, with a dozen in my view as a goal for 2025. I will only get there with help from the community,” Parker said as his heartfelt plea.
For those that would like to adopt, sponsor, or dedicate an instrument: it is understood the instruments will suffer environmental damage, but they will have a new life for as long as they function, inspiring and lifting spirits on any ordinary day.
If Robert Parker needed an album title for his work in Oceanside, it would be, “The Joy Of Music,” because his joy is contagious. If ever in need of some soulful piano music, Parker plays at Felix’s BBQ with Soul (almost) every Sunday from 10am- 2:30pm.
Thank you Robert Parker for realizing your life purpose and utilizing your potential to make Oceanside Arts the object of your life's work. You are truly Oceanside’s Finest.
Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance –Plastic Bag Ban Now in Effect!
The Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance specifically addresses the use of polystyrene foam and single-use plastic bags. All retail establishments and food service providers in Oceanside are required to find sustainable alternatives to these products.
The use of disposable food serviceware items and single-use carryout bags have negative environmental impacts including greenhouse gas emissions, generation of litter and pollution, water consumption, solid waste generation, and impacts on wildlife.
On July 1, 2024, the distribution of polystyrene foam was prohibited. Some alternatives to polystyrene foam materials are:
• Reusable Serviceware (ceramic, glass, plastic, aluminum, etc.)
• Plastic (rigid, non-foam)
• Aluminum
• Paper
Effective January 1, 2025, the distribution of single-use carryout bags is prohibited. Businesses may provide a reusable or recyclable bag to customers for at least ten cents and educational posting is required for at least one year.
For more information on Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance, visit greenoceanside.org.
Properly Dispose of your Organic Waste
Properly sorting organic waste reduces landfill waste, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and supports sustainability. By separating food scraps and food-soiled paper, you help create a valuable resource for your garden. As of January 2024, residents can place these materials in their green waste carts!
Annual Cart Exchange
Carts may be exchanged annually at no charge for any reason including being damaged or inoperable. If you would like to request a cart exchange, contact Waste Management at (760) 439-2824.
Large Item & E-Waste Collection

Taste Your Way Through the New Swell Plates Series
Culinary travel is more popular than ever, ranking among the top three travel trends for 2025. This year, Oceanside is serving up something truly special to satisfy foodies’ appetites for discovery.
Introducing the Swell Plates Series, a month-long culinary celebration from January 15 to February 13, 2025, that puts Oceanside’s celebrated dining scene in the spotlight. Aligning perfectly with California Restaurant Month, this inaugural event tantalizes taste buds while supporting local restaurants during a quieter time of year.
Discover Oceanside’s Swell Flavors
The Swell Plates Series invites diners to explore the artistry and creativity that has made Oceanside one of San Diego’s most exciting and innovative dining destinations. Fourteen local restaurants have crafted signature dishes inspired by the unique O’side vibe. Think fresh fish from the Harbor’s Fishermen’s Market, produce from South Morro Hills, and artisanal spirits—all coming together in exclusive menu items marked with the “O’side Season of Swellness” logo.
Each ‘swell plate’ tells a story of community, creativity, and connection. For instance, 24 Suns presents a dish inspired by Oceanside Museum of Art’s Transformative Currents exhibit. Served in an abalone shell bowl, it features rice noodles resembling plastic, a black abalone and smoked vegetable mole symbolizing oil, and a bright green gai lan choux farci with sustainable bycatch sausage. It’s both a culinary and artistic expression of environmental awareness and hope.
Allmine's approach focuses on wellness with a vibrant, hand-pulled burrata salad. Partnering with Loose Leaf herbalists, this dish features crisp greens from GoGreen Organic Farms, winter vegetables like kohlrabi from Dacquisto Farms, and SeaGreens microgreens topped with a botanical herb dressing and California pistachios. It’s a nutrient-rich nod to Oceanside’s agricultural heritage and the healing powers of our coastal location.
At Wrench & Rodent, the Fisherman’s Special comes from weekly chef-led trips to the Oceanside Fishermen’s Market, one of only two boat-toconsumer markets in San Diego. Chef Davin Waite creates his “living” specials based on the freshest local catch and paired with greens from The Plot Garden to celebrate Oceanside’s year-round growing seasons and amplify his sustainable, zero-waste ethos.
Eat, Explore, Win!
To make the experience even more rewarding, diners can track their journey with the Swell Plates Series passport. Those who enjoy three or more dishes can enter to win an Oceanside getaway; while sharing photos of «swell plates» on Instagram and tagging @VisitOceanside could win you gift cards to participating restaurants. Pick up a passport at any participating restaurant or the California Welcome Center Oceanside.

KYOTO JAPANESE MARKET
WORDS: ERIC KLIER
PHOTOS:ZACH CORDNER
Kyoto Japanese Market is a Japanese grocery store with an assortment of fresh groceries, snacks, and drinks. They also serve the best plate lunches and sushi Friday through Sunday.
Kyoto has been in our community for over half a century and was recently acquired by Mike and Tomomi “AJ” Aubuchon, both of whom have extensive restaurant and brewery experience. Their children Zephyr, Zeppelin, Zekiel, and Auria also help out and are usually helping stock, running food, or on the register.
AJ is actually from Kyoto, is bilingual, and has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all the products and groceries that you might not be familiar with. Mike is an award-winning brewer and grill-master who brewed some of the most famous beers from Pizza Port and will be opening a brewery next door soon.
Mike breaks down all the fresh fish and meat and works his magic on the BBQs out front. His
sushi is incredibly fresh with a variety of nigiri and rolls that are grab and go while the plate lunches are made to order. The short ribs are a must, along with the pork belly musubi that will make your mouth water. All plate lunches come with rice and side salad, and the portions are perfect.
If you aren’t into red meat the glazed salmon and yakitori chicken are excellent along with everything else on the menu. The snack and candy selection is immense, so is the sake selection, and they also have some great Japanese beers to choose from.
Kyoto Japanese Market has so much to offer. You just have to go there yourself to see the quantity of reasonably priced Japanese and Hawaiian style food that you can’t find anywhere else. This family owned and operated small business is truly a gem and well-deserving of your next visit. Make sure to stop by Friday to Sunday to get a taste of their delicious BBQ and sushi!

CARLA & LINDA'S LOCAL TOURS
WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE
PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
It is abundantly clear that Oceanside has arrived when a walking tour is an excellent way to experience all the city has to offer. Lucky for Oceanside, Carla & Linda’s Local Tours are a remarkable way to showcase our beautifully delicious city as a culinary and cultural mecca.
What began as the couple’s affinity for sharing the burgeoning Oceanside restaurant scene to friends, is now a successful and well-loved local business.
On February 20, 2016, with the original name, Shoes and Chews, the first official Oceanside walking food tour began. Shoes and Chews is still their calling card, but the business has expanded to include more than food. And, the two ladies in charge of the successful business are included in the new moniker—Carla & Linda’s Local Tours— because Carla & Linda are the business!
“We want people to love Oceanside the way we love Oceanside,” Linda proclaimed. Their gregarious and hospitable personalities are the reason they’ve garnered so much affection from residents, tourists, restaurant owners, chefs, and local businesses. A local tour presented by the most locally-appreciated couple is a fantastic way to spend the day. Their tagline is, “Unforgettable Experiences in North County, San Diego, California!”
Carla & Linda’s Local Tours has recently acquired multiple accolades, and 2024 was a banner year for their business. At the beginning of the year, Senator Catherine Blakespear, District 38, personally presented Carla and Linda with the award for “Women Who Inspire - Business and Entrepreneurship.” In May, Carla & Linda’s Local Tours was named Industry Partner of the Year at the 2024 Visit Oceanside Tourism Summit.
Carla & Linda’s Local Tours include: North Oside, South O, Vista, beer tours, wine tours, and private tours. Each tour includes four to five restaurants and lasts approximately three hours. It is never more than a one mile walk on flat surface (so manageable for all abilities). Of course, there’s plenty to see and learn about Oceanside, so each tour includes details about historic buildings, business owners, world-renowned chefs, and fun facts that make Oceanside great.
“We live in heaven, and I want the local business to stay here, and to share everything we love about this city!” Linda stated.
Private tours are a great opportunity for businesses, bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and every life celebration. Grab some friends and take a tour together!
Recently, The Osider crew was invited to enjoy a North Oceanside Tour. The crew, along with eleven participants, gathered together to begin their tour at Banana Dang with a Peppermint Mocha Smoothie. Banana Dang is a revered local coffee shop that will soon celebrate ten years in Oceanside! With name tags affixed and introductions made, Carla and Linda led the tour out to the bustling city of Oceanside.
Second stop, Petite Madeline Bakery, where Linda has a personal history as an employee, and the ladies have a charming relationship with staff and chefs. Petite Madeline offered each guest a Chicken & Waffles Benedict, which is their number one dish. It’s important to note that extra drinks,
both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, are not included in the tour price, but many participants thoroughly enjoyed Petite Madeline’s Guava Mimosa.
After walking through The Succulent Cafe and Stone Brewing Tap Room to receive information and beer samples, the next stop on the tour was The Lab Collaborative. Chefs Eddie and Cole introduced a new dish, pesto gnocchi. One of the guests elaborated that this was not their first tour; “Every time we go on a tour, we get to try new things that we wouldn’t normally try.”
On the way to the fourth stop at Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen, the tour guests received history and gelato samples from Gelato 1022. As everyone passed by, Linda pointed out that Booze Bros was a stop on their beer tour. It’s poignant to note that all guests were now comfortable chatting together and genuinely enjoying each other’s company between short treks.
Also, at this point, the kindness of Carla and Linda was displayed as a young Marine, Logan, was sitting outside The Arcade Tattoo, and jokingly said he wanted to join. Well, he joined and added a welcome perspective to the group! Since each restaurant knows in advance how many dishes to prepare, Carla gladly passed her dish to Logan for the remainder of the tour.
At Flying Pig, Chef Samantha, a popular local chef, introduced Chicken Sliders. With owner Aaron Browning present, Linda graciously noted that Flying Pig has been a supporter of their business since its inception.
The fifth and final stop was at one of the newest, yet most acclaimed restaurants on the restaurant scene, allmine. Almost everything at allmine is made from scratch. Its high-quality, seasonal, fresh food has made it a culinary beacon in downtown Oceanside. Restaurant Manager, Addison (a former member of the U.S. Ski Team), presented their Better Than Pepperoni Pizza. The dough for all their pizzas utilize a three-day process. The pizza sauce is made with san marzano tomatoes, imported from Italy, and paired with a unique allmine cheese blend.
As the tour was winding down and the yummy food disappeared at allmine, Linda presented each guest with a gift pack. At this point in the day, all the guests were friends and the new Marine friend, Logan, was now a local Osider. It’s safe to say great conversations were had, good food was enjoyed, and it was a very memorable experience.
Thank you, Carla & Linda, for hosting The Osider, and inviting us to enjoy the special experience from the two best hosts! Ready to enjoy a tour? Take 10% off a booked tour, by using the code: Osider

The Goetz House Built in 1888
WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE
PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
HISTORICAL IMAGES COURTESY OF THE OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
A hidden gem in the form of a small historic home is nestled among the row houses on North Tremont Street, once the home of Oceanside pioneer John Evangelist Goetz. Built in 1888, this modest home was erected the same year Oceanside incorporated as a city. Even as most of the immediate neighborhood was bulldozed to make way for newer housing in 2004, this little house at 607 North Tremont Street was left standing thanks to its owner.
The house is eclectic and charming. Broy Hazzard, the owner, and his brother Bret, have added their own creative touches while uncovering the original exterior; a bay window which had long been covered is original to the house and has been restored. They have transformed this little cottage from an eyesore, to an oasis surrounded by plants and trees, and covered with beautiful mosaics from beach rocks.
Originally owned by John Goetz, who arrived in Oceanside in 1888, the house is one of the oldest in the immediate area. Goetz was a local merchant, who first went into business with W. G. Grate, operating a furniture store on North Tremont near Second Street (now Mission Avenue).
Goetz was born in Bavaria in 1849, coming to the US as a young boy with his parents. They settled in Iowa where he would eventually meet and marry India Maxson in 1856. The couple had three children Charles, Melville, and Mabel.
Soon after arriving in Oceanside, John Goetz was not only a respected business owner, but was on the school board and engaged in other civic activities. The couple, along with their children were featured in the early newspapers on a regular basis.
Sadly, India Maxson Goetz died suddenly in 1891, at the age of 35 years. Her funeral services were said to have been attended by the entire community and she was buried at the Buena Vista cemetery in South Oceanside. The South Oceanside Diamond reported that “Sorrow and sadness mark to-day the face of every person in our city. The angel of death has spread his wings over our
homes and left a dwelling filled with weeping and heart-breaking sobs. Three young children cry and lament because fate has left them orphans with a swiftness that passes all human conception. The mother, who was their protector and educator, has been taken from them. The whole community sympathizes with Mr. Goetz in his sad bereavement and mourns the death of his beloved wife, she being universally liked and respected.”
In 1892, John Goetz established Goetz Brothers & Co. selling dry goods, clothing, and
fresh food. The business was reorganized in 1903 to include his sons Charles and Melville. Located in the Oceanside Bank Building on the northwest corner of present-day Mission and Coast Highway, their company name was painted on the back of the building and could be seen from the train depot three blocks away.
John Goetz died in February 1907 and was buried in what is now the Oceanview Cemetery on Coast Highway. His wife, India, was removed from the Buena Vista Cemetery and reburied
alongside him. Their only daughter, Mabel, died that same year at the age of twenty-three.
Sons Charles and Melville Goetz continued the family business and remained active in the community. Melville was an avid hunter, served on the city council, as well as the volunteer fire department.
The house at 607 North Tremont was sold to S. B. Wheaton, who owned it for a year or two before selling it to Edward W. King. Valeria Rusilez owned the home from 1914 to 1921.
Carlos Gelpi purchased the little house in
about 1927 and owned it for over twenty years. Gelpi was a local grocer and for a time was in partnership with William Contreras. (The Gelpi & Contreras business name is still painted on the Schuyler building on Pier View Way).
Afterwards Soledad Hernandez owned the house until her death in 1982. During that time the surrounding area had deteriorated and although just three blocks from the beach the area was considered undesirable. In 1992, the house, now vacant, was listed for rent for $700. In 1995 the rent was reduced to $650.
Broy Hazzard bought the house in 1997, while living in Las Vegas. His brother Bret had been renting the back house while they were attempting to acquire it. At the time they were warned not to move to this particular neighborhood. Broy remembers the house was in rough shape and may have been used as a drug house for a
time. The house had been neglected, in need of repair and windows had been boarded up. But the brothers, along with their father, saw the potential in the house due to its proximity to the beach and knew the neighborhood would improve.
Despite the warnings, Broy purchased the house and moved his parents to the front house while he lived in the small ADU in the back, which had been added in the 1920s. Broy began to
renovate the house, with its crooked floors, and its old knob and tube electrical wiring, while his brother Bret had already begun doing rock and masonry work.
Bret started with a rock skirt around the house to help shore the foundation. Their father, a former brick and concrete mason, introduced the idea of using beach rock. Selecting smooth rocks of various sizes, Bret built retaining walls and posts and then pathways. In the front yard he created ponds which at one time had Koi fish, but they attracted raccoons and had to be emptied. A shallow pool was created in the backyard with a wooden bridge, which was recently replaced with a rock one.
The accessory dwelling unit has beautiful stone work throughout, including the floors, bathroom and shower. It feels like a storybook cottage in a cozy setting.
The brothers chose a lush landscaping design which provides privacy and added charm throughout the property. It’s a project they have worked on for over twenty years.
The property has revealed some of its history in the way of artifacts. Items found around and under the house include old bottles, a wooden crate and a large wooden yoke, all dating back to the time the Goetz family would have owned the home. Most notable finds include a straw hat and small boots and a shoe, presumably worn by the Goetz children. The house sits on a time capsule of sorts with more items waiting to be discovered.
Broy and Bret are delighted to learn of the history of their house, now 137 years old, which has many original elements inside and out. Hiding in plain sight, just waiting to be discovered and appreciated, the house may have more stories (and artifacts) waiting to be uncovered.

The Osider is best known for the amazing photography displayed within our magazine. We’re lucky to have so many talented photographers that are daily documenting our ever-changing city.
People always tell us that they never throw away their copies of The Osider. They’re collected and proudly displayed in people’s homes and businesses. It’s with this display of photography that we can show how proud we are of where we live.
As Oceanside continues to grow, this magazine will be a time capsule of moments in a diverse and unique city. It’s the beauty of our community forever preserved in print.
In this year’s Photo Issue, we look back at some of the most compelling images taken of Oceanside in 2024. Of course, the big story of the year was the fire on the pier. Many photographers documented the April fire but one image has stood out. It’s this issue’s cover image, taken by The Osider photographer Kevin Mijares. It’s a powerful image showing the innocence of children playing at the beach while the pier burns in the background. It’s a striking and eye-catching image that deserves to be on the cover.
Luckily there were local photographers who photographed the pier before the fire and many documenting the aftermath. We showcase those images in this feature along with many other great images taken across the city.
Photography is at the core of what we do here at The Osider. We hope these images inspire you to get out there and take pictures. Whether it's with your iPhone or dusting off your dad’s old film camera, photography connects you to what’s happening around us.

JIM ADCOCK
WORDS:
There are certain people in our lives that deserve the utmost respect and admiration. Jim Adcock is one of those such people.
You see, Jim has been a constant in my life since my early youth. Father to DJ, Michael, James, and Jennifer—I first met Mr. Adcock through his son and one of my best lifelong friends, James. He, along with his beautiful wife, Dawn, always looked after me like a son, especially out in the lineup.
You see, Jim is the ultimate harbor local. Yeah, everyone says they are locals, but he has been surfing the harbor since before it was even built. He surfed his first waves in 1959 on a balsa wood board along the beaches of South O. He even bought his first board at the Shanks hardware store. Crazy stuff, right?
The harbor was built in the early ‘60s and once the jetties were finished, it became Jim’s home away from home. Shortly afterwards, he became a father and started his career as an engineer.
Back then, surfing the north jetty was tricky. The road ended at middles and if you dare walk down to the north jetty, good luck getting any waves unless you knew the right people. Luckily, we knew Jim. Because I would surf with his son James, I got to know him and he would look after us and give us his scraps.
Dan “The Crab” Viveros and Jim ran the peak. One would go left and the other right, splitting the waves. James, myself, and a few other friends would sit inside and when they cut out of the wave, we took what was left. God forbid some non-local would enter the lineup and mess with us because they would get an earful and be sent directly into the beach.
Jim is now 78 years old and still gets out from time to time, but now spends his time playing a mean game of pickleball and enjoys watching his grandchildren grow and play. I could go on for days with amazing stories of him tolerating us as teenagers around his household. But, more importantly, I want to say thank you, Jim, for being a true example of what being an original Osider is all about.
UNCLE ANTHONY’S LOCAL MARKET
WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
For many of us lifelong locals, The Red and White Markets located on both ends of Coast Highway bring back so many fond memories of our youth. Whether you were grabbing a quick deli sandwich, a grab and go hot plate, or something to nicely quench your thirst on a hot day, Red and White Market was the go to place.
Anthony Spano established the market in 1959 and served our community for many years. When the South O location closed its doors, it was a very sad day. So, when I received a recent call from a friend letting me know that the original family was rebooting the North O’side location, I was so excited that I nearly fell out of my seat.
Anthony’s nephew and niece, Travis Lester and Sam Heering, along with the family have stepped up to revamp and continue the Red and White legacy while honoring Anthony Spano by rebranding the market, Uncle Anthony’s Local Market. You can expect the same family run passion and service, but with a modernized version of its offerings.
The butcher shop at Uncle Anthony’s offers
top quality beef, pork, and poultry, and they are happy to make the cuts just the way you like them. The deli serves the best available meats, veggies, and all of the fixings made with fresh bread to order. In fact, both the butcher shop and deli managers are former employees from the legendary Tip Top Meats, which closed its doors earlier this year.
Uncle Anthony’s also offers hot grab and go meals daily. The beer, wine, and liquor selection has all the best selections around. You will also find everything you need from canned goods to fresh produce, firewood, and everything in between.
The family history runs deep in Oceanside and I love that they are continuing their uncle’s legacy by serving our community the same way he always did. I highly recommend stopping by, grabbing a cup of their complementary coffee and doing some shopping just like we did back in the day. It’s places and families like these that helped build our city and continue to honor their heritage the same way Uncle Anthony always did.

TASTY WAX
WORDS: KATIE LALICATA
PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
“The only limitations you have are the ones in your head,” and like the man behind the curtain in Oz, Phil Needleman & Lee Williams are the men behind the frosty glass window and down the hallway of mystery at Tasty Wax Records.
Here, they can be found cutting vinyl, indulging in a spectrum of sound and color, and making whimsical dreams come true. Here, they are creating visions of art and music beyond the realm of what others have done. Their signature offering is their ability to cut sound not just on vinyl, but literally anything.
When we say sound, we don’t just mean music; it can be a baby’s first words or wedding vows. If it makes noise, it can be captured and put onto a record to enjoy as long as one would like. As for the medium to which it’s “cut” onto, these two are bending minds in their avant guard presentation—from round ordinary records to customized wood geometric works of art worthy of being displayed on the wall. The ingenuity these two manufacture is really quite brilliant.
Starting as a friendship twenty years ago, their initial vision was to cut records for local musicians; i.e., take the sounds the musicians have recorded and put them onto vinyl or a record. They found this task to be practically impossible locally, so they took it upon themselves to be the solution.
Tasty Wax Records is a humble local recording studio, but in practice they are a really unique offering to the music, art, and culture scene here in Oceanside. Tasty Wax records officially began its tenure as a recording studio (and artist den)
in October 2021 but has continued to grow, evolve, and shape-shift since then.
Like any good duo, the yin and yang of these two is synchronistic. As Lee puts it, “Phil is a brilliant technician, musician engineer, and I come up with these crazy explative ideas that he somehow figures out how to do, and it works really well.”
With that sentiment in mind, they offer the perfect compliment to one another—the idea man and the all things sounds and music master man. They are living their manifestation of the belief that “the individual is responsible for creating the community they want to be a part of.” They embody this belief by example. This business is here to build community, and it really is a beautiful thing.
Beyond the surface, the awe continues to unfold. As mentioned before, these two have the capacity to not only put musician’s music onto vinyl but to put any sound onto any medium you can imagine.
Seems far out there? Well, it is. But, that’s what makes it cool! The details of how this is done could go on for pages and that in and of itself makes them worthy of notation for any local or tourist to stop by for a visit.
To add to the allure for super nerdy music lovers, this place is as much a museum as it is a recording studio and has even hosted an immersive psychedelic art and sound exhibition. I truly can’t think of any reason not to come check this place out. The doors open by appointment only, and Phil and Lee are the most amicable hosts. Give ‘em a shout to have your own customized experience here at Tasty Wax Records.

MERENDA
WORDS: KATIE TRIPPE
PHOTOS: PRISCILLA IEZZI
Tucked under The Flats is Oceanside’s newest wine bar, Merenda. This intimate yet elevated space is the creation of Aaron and Lauren CrosslandMarr, a couple whose passion for food and wine is deeply rooted and wonderfully contagious.
“La merenda” means a snack shared among friends, and, at Merenda, it serves as a call to gather and savor life’s simple pleasures. “Food is at the center of life. And it’s been central to both our personal and professional journeys,” Aaron told us.
Aaron, a North County native, is a selfdescribed ‘obsessive home cook’ with an immense respect for food as an expression of culture and connection. When he had the chance to join his wife, Lauren, in Italy where she was researching for her PhD in food anthropology, he jumped on it. Their adventures exploring all twenty Italian regions laid the foundation for Merenda’s concept, a love letter to the wine bars and specialty shops they frequented in Southern Europe.
The dream of opening a space that encapsulated the charm, quality, and flavors they encountered abroad began taking shape in 2021, when the couple returned to Oceanside. The concept evolved from a specialty bottle shop into Merenda, a cozy yet sophisticated wine retailer and restaurant highlighting old-world wines from lesser-known regions and sustainable, small-scale producers.
The warm charm of Merenda’s interior is complemented by elegant vintage touches, like gold clamshell lamps mounted on the bar, a retro record player, and checked brown-and-white tile floors. Earthy hues of olive and mustard yellow mingle with quartz and wood accents, creating a space that feels both curated and comfortable. Prints and posters, collected over a life well traveled
and taken from the couple’s home, adorn the walls. “We wanted the restaurant to be a reflection of us and our experiences,” Aaron explained.
Resentful of being boxed into a certain cuisine, the couple coined the term “Middle-terranian” to capture the restaurant’s culinary inspiration, a fusion of Southern European, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern influences. The menu, created around the wine list, is an ever-evolving showcase of local, seasonal ingredients and global influences, thanks to the creativity of Chef Xavier. Despite a tiny kitchen—less than 300 square feet—Merenda delivers dishes as beautiful as they are flavorful.
Highlights include the lamb tartar, hand-cut tender lamb tossed in exotic smoky spices and crunchy pomegranate seeds atop nutty sesame bread, and the sardine toast, reminiscent of Basque Country’s pintxo bars with house-cured sardines and a bright piquillo pepper vinaigrette.
The charred leeks, blistered on a yakitori grill and served with a creamy baharat-spiced puree, offer comforting yet intriguing flavors. The pappardelle pasta is made in-house daily from scratch and tossed in a rustic pomodoro sauce sauteed with ‘nduja, a spicy spreadable Calabrian sausage the couple fell in love with during their travels.
Natural wine is at the heart of Merenda, which offers a hyper-curated selection of low-intervention wines from interesting varietals, available at retail pricing. Aaron and Lauren’s vision is to create a space where both newcomers and connoisseurs feel welcome, whether they’re looking for a fruitforward porch pounder or a natty cult classic.
They’ve also launched vermouth and winebased cocktail programs, inspired by Aaron’s unapologetic “love of a bitter drink.” Standouts
include the AperVino, a house-made Aperol-esque cocktail that’s beautifully bitter-sweet, and the Winter Spritz, savory yet fresh and floral, with pomegranate, warm spices, aromatic rosemary, and a frizzante finish.
“It had to be Oceanside,” Aaron told us of selecting the home for Merenda. “We’re so excited to be here, to create memorable experiences, community, and joy.” We’re excited they’ve joined our burgeoning restaurant scene and will be keeping an eye out for their Monday industry night and wine club, both launching in the new year.

When Joe Locricchio opened Tony Pepperoni’s first San Diego location in Oceanside back in 2011, he brought more than just great pizza to the neighborhood.
Hailing from Michigan and rooted in his Italian heritage, Joe infused the restaurant with a sense of family, community, and good food. And, as a die-hard Lions fan, he’s created a haven for not only Michigan sports fans but sports enthusiasts from all walks of life.
Tony Pepperoni is bright and airy with high ceilings and buzzes with energy. Twenty bigscreen TVs stream every major game from every sports package imaginable. So, no matter where you’re sitting, you won’t miss a touchdown, goal, or home run.
While banners for the Detroit Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings hang proudly on the walls, patrons wear jerseys of all colors. Every few minutes, shouts and jeers break out as points are scored and passes are missed. While adults watch the games, kids shoot hoops and play classics like Pac-Man in the video arcade.
The action, however, really unfolds around the food. The menu features a variety of salads, wings, sandwiches, and pastas, although pizzas are by far their best sellers. Their pizzas strike the perfect balance between Detroit-style thick

crust and crispy and New York-style thin crust. The real fan favorite is “The Works,” a supreme pizza loaded with sausage, ham, crunchy green peppers, onions, and black olives, all under a layer of thick, melty cheese.
The breadsticks are a must-order, light and fluffy and flecked with Parmesan. But the real hero of the menu is their homemade red sauce—a recipe passed down from Joe’s Sicilian grandmother. It’s fresh, bright, and deliciously garlicky, topping perfectly al-dente penne and covered in bubbling cheese in their baked mostaccioli dish.
While all five Tony Pepperoni locations offer the same menu, each location curates its beer selection to the neighborhood. Oceanside’s taps highlight local breweries like Booze Brothers, Black Plague, and Artifex. Travis, the restaurant’s manager, assures us they’ll always have a hazy IPA and seltzers on draft for their regulars.
And while we love a good beer, there’s nothing better than drinking for a good cause. Through its nonprofit, The Betty Fund, sponsored by their annual golf tournament and partnership with Figueroa Mountain Brewing, the restaurant has been able to get four homeless elders off the street and into permanent shelter.
“Ms. Betty was the first person we helped, and, from there, the mission has grown,” Travis
told us. The pizzeria also allows customers to donate pizza to Marines through their “Pizza with a Purpose” program.
Tony Pepperoni isn’t just a pizza joint; it’s a family-first restaurant and community hub. They’re a popular venue catering to the ten schools in the area and have strong ties to Oceanside Pop Warner, sponsoring several teams a year. The restaurant’s recent expansion in 2023 tripled its size, allowing it to host more team parties, school fundraisers, and community events.
“Giving back is where we find joy,” Travis explained. “Without the community, there is no us”.
From the arcade games to the sports-filled atmosphere to the charitable initiatives, Toni Pepperoni is a place where families, sports fans, and food lovers come together. Whether you’re cheering for a touchdown, grabbing a beer for a good cause, or savoring a slice of “The Works,” you’re sure to have a good time—without leaving a single delicious pizza crust behind.

101 CAFÉ
WORDS: JAMEY STONE
PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
When driving down Coast Highway, you would have to be asleep at the wheel not to notice the legendary 101 Café. The retro signage along with the mural of classic ‘50s Americana have been a mainstay here since 1928.
Yep, you read that correctly—1928. The café is the longest running diner on the West Coast, previously owned by long time Oceanside resident and historian John Daly who sold the establishment to Carina Galvez in 2015.
A few years later, her son Herlen stepped in to run the show and update the menu with a mix of diner classics, such as their indulgent banana french toast. Infusing his Mexican roots into the menu was a nobrainer with dishes like the to-die-for birria eggs benedict, pastor fries, and avocado toast. They also do all classic tacos complete with house-made salsas and cold micheladas to wash it all down.
You can still find classics like the bacon cheeseburger and a variety of tasty omelets that
round out the menu. They even do milkshakes the old school diner way with stainless-steel cups and a shake mixer that dates back to the 1950s.
The interior of the diner has an amazing feel that takes you back to a simpler time. Herlen, with years of kitchen experience, handles the back of the house and his sister, Carina Cervantez, handles the dining room. Right when you walk in the door, you are greeted with a big smile along with great service.
The Galvez family loves Oceanside and its non-pretentious community. They are proud to be a part of the culture and history here. If you are looking for something different, I highly recommend giving 101 a visit. It truly is a time capsule from the past with its classic diner feel and black and white photos adorning the wall. But, the menu and vibe is turned up with a unique blend of classic American diner feel and a touch of the Galvez Mexican heritage.

What is Compost?
Compost is a soil amendment that can be used to build soil health and provide nutrients to plants. Composting is nature’s way of recycling. It is one of the most powerful actions we can take to reduce our trash, address climate change and build healthy soil.
What is Mulch?
Mulch retains moisture in the soil, suppresses or blocks weeds, keeps the soil and plant roots cool, prevents frost in winter, reduces erosion, and makes the garden bed and landscape look more attractive.
