INTRODUCCIÓN Tras el descubrimiento en el siglo IX de la tumba del Apóstol Santiago en la ciudad de Compostela, nacía el camino de peregrinación religiosa más importante de la Europa medieval. Tres siglos más tarde se conocía el Códice Calixtino, cuyo ejemplar más antiguo, datado entre 1150 y 1160, se conserva en la catedral compostelana. El libro V de este manuscrito anónimo se titula “Guía del peregrino de Santiago de Compostela” y en él se incluyen consejos y descripciones de la Ruta, de las obras de arte y de las costumbres locales de las gentes que vivían a lo largo del Camino.

Aunque el próximo Año Santo (aquel en el que el Día de Santiago, 25 de julio, cae en domingo) será 2021, desde el pasado mes de diciembre de 2015 y hasta noviembre de 2016 la Puerta Santa santiaguesa se abrirá por ser proclamado el 2016 Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. Pero no solo Compostela tendrá Puerta Santa sino que cada catedral en cualquier parte del mundo elegirá la suya. En la capital lucense la portada escogida ha sido la que da acceso a la capilla 10

de San Froilán y los peregrinos que la crucen podrán obtener, si lo desean, las denominadas “gracias jubilares”.

Sin duda, en 2016 se llenarán otra vez las rutas de caminantes rumbo a la capital gallega, de los cuales una gran parte entrará por la provincia de Lugo.

tiene entrada por el poblado prerromano de O Cebreiro; Camino Primitivo, que inicia su tramo gallego en el municipio de A Fonsagrada, y Camino Norte (o Ruta de la Costa), que entra por A Mariña Oriental. A estas hay que añadir otros tres itinerarios alternativos, todavía no oficiales: Camino Sur o de Invierno, Camino Norte Interior y Camino del Mar. En total, la provincia de Lugo alcanza los 800 kilómetros de Caminos.

INTRODUCIÓN Tras o descubrimento no século IX da tumba do Apóstolo Santiago na cidade de Compostela, nacía o camiño de peregrinación relixiosa máis importante da Europa medieval. Tres séculos máis tarde coñecíase o Códice Calixtino, cuxo exemplar máis antigo, datado entre 1150 e 1160, se conserva na catedral compostelá.

O libro V deste manuscrito anónimo titúlase “Guía do peregrino de Santiago de Compostela” e nel inclúense consellos e descricións da Ruta, das obras de arte e dos costumes locais das xentes que vivían ao longo do Camiño.

A peregrinación á capital galega desde todas as partes do mundo non cesou desde o achado do sepulcro e nos últimos anos, coñecedoras ou non do Códice, son cada vez máis as persoas que, por motivos relixiosos, espirituais ou lúdicos, elixen como destino a capital de Galicia, maioritariamente a pé ou en bicicleta. Santiago de Compostela, a súa catedral e o sepulcro do Apóstolo son a meta común de todos os Camiños, a través dos cales os viaxeiros enchen a súa mochila de vivencias, de amizades, de cultura e de paisaxes.

INTRODUCTION After the discovery of the St James Apostle in the IX century in the city of Santiago de Compostela, the most important route of religious pilgrimage of the medieval Europe was born. Three centuries later, The Códice Calixtino was known whose most ancient copy, dated between the 1150 and 1160, is found in Santiago de Compostela cathedral. The book V of this anonymous manuscript is entitled “Guide of the Pilgrim of Santiago de Compostela” where some pieces of advice and route descriptions are included as well as works of art and local costumes from the people who lived all along the path.

The pilgrimage to the Galician capital from every part of the world has not stopped since the discovery of the tomb and in the last years, there are more and more people who know about the Codex or not but for religious, spiritual or recreational reasons, they decide as destiny the capital of Galicia, mainly on foot or by bicycle.

The city of Santiago de Compostela, its cathedral and the Apostle tomb are the common aim of every single path, through which travellers fill their backpacks with experiences, friendships, cultures and landscapes.

Although the next Holy Year (when Santiago Day, on the 25th July, coincides with Sunday) will be in 2021, since last December in 2015 and until November 2016 the Holy Door of Santiago will be opened for being proclaimed 2016 as Holy Year of Jubilee of the Clemency. However, not only Santiago de Compostela will have a Holy Door but also every cathedral in any part of the world will choose one. In Lugo, the chosen door has been the one that gives access to San Froilán Chapel.

Considerada como la principal ruta de las peregrinaciones a Santiago, entra en España por Roncesvalles y atraviesa el norte de la Península con un total de 754 km hasta llegar a Santiago de Compostela.

TRAMO DEL CAMINO FRANCÉS LUGO · SANTIAGO En la provincia de Lugo el Camino Francés entra por la aldea de O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro), entre las sierras de Os Ancares y O Courel, pasa por Triacastela y desde aquí el peregrino puede elegir entre dos rutas: San Xil o Samos, que se unen otra vez en Calvor a 4 km de Sarria.

La ruta atraviesa además los municipios de Paradela, Portomarín, Monterroso y Palas de Rei para penetrar después en Melide y Arzúa, ya en tierras coruñesas. La señalización oficial del tramo por tierras gallegas marca 152 kilómetros hasta Santiago.

LA PUERTA DEL CAMINO: O CEBREIRO La aldea de O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro) es la privilegiada entrada del Camino Francés en la provincia de Lugo. Desde allí, a 1.300 metros de altitud, maravilla la vista del macizo galaico-leonés.

En esta parada los peregrinos disfrutarán de sus calles empedradas, de sus casas y de sus pallozas, milenarias viviendas prerromanas, una de las cuales alberga un museo etnográfico. La joya de su patrimonio monumental es la iglesia

de Santa María a Real (siglo IX). Los que quieran comer en O Cebreiro podrán degustar sus cremosos quesos, con denominación de origen Queso do Cebreiro, así como carne de vacuno y embutidos de cerdo, pan, miel o dulces caseros.

O CEBREIRO · TRIACASTELA Desde O Cebreiro la ruta continúa hacia la parroquia de Liñares, en la que se alza la iglesia prerrománica de Santo Estevo. Desde aquí se alcanza el alto de San Roque (1.275 m), donde se erige una estatua de bronce al peregrino y desde donde se obtienen impresionantes vistas. El siguiente pueblo es Hospital da Condesa, así llamado por haber acogido antiguamente un hospital para caminantes.

Más adelante se encuentra Padornelo y un nuevo tramo de ascenso conduce hasta el alto de O Poio (1.335 m), subida que brinda otro espectacular paisaje de montaña. Después de algo más de tres kilómetros se llega a Fonfría, último núcleo poblacional de Pedrafita do Cebreiro.

El resto de la ruta discurre cuesta abajo hasta llegar a O Biduedo y poco después a Fillobal, estas dos aldeas ya en Triacastela. Su vinculación jacobea dota a este municipio de edificios de interesante valor arquitectónico, como la iglesia de Santiago de Triacastela. Para comer, son recomendables los tradicionales platos de la montaña lucense: lacón con grelos, chorizos, patatas, carne de cerdo…

A partir de aquí el camino se bifurca y ofrece dos opciones: dirigirse a Sarria o tomar una ruta alternativa, que nos llevará hacia Sarria igualmente pero pasando por Samos. ·La ruta por San Xil Es la ruta tradicional y esta elección nos permitirá disfrutar de paisajes campestres donde los bosques autóctonos de castaños y robles alternan con pastizales.

como A Furela, Pintín y Calvor, para entrar en Sarria por el barrio de Vigo. ·La ruta por Samos Samos creció en torno al monasterio de San Xulián y Santa Basilisa.

Este conjunto arquitectónico (siglo VI) es uno de los monumentos más impresionantes del Camino de Santiago en España. Todavía alberga una pequeña comunidad de monjes benedictinos, que proporcionan alojamiento y muestran la abadía en visitas guiadas en las que se pueden disfrutar de sus claustros, el del Padre Feijoo, uno de los más grandes de España, y el gótico o de las Nereidas, así como de las pinturas del interior del edificio. En las cercanías del monasterio se encuentra la capilla del Ciprés, un edificio mozárabe del siglo X. Samos cuenta además con una buena oferta gastronómica en la que destacan sus carnes de cerdo y de ternera, verduras y miel autóctonas.

Desde Samos el trayecto continúa hacia Sarria, una de las poblaciones más importantes del Camino Francés en Galicia. Esta capital municipal ostenta un gran número de albergues y es el lugar escogido por muchos caminantes para iniciar la peregrinación, ya que se encuentra en la distancia ideal para conseguir la Compostela. En

su casco histórico pueden verse los vestigios del castillo medieval, el monasterio de A Magdalena y las iglesias de San Salvador y Santa Mariña. Para reponer fuerzas, recordamos que esta es una de las principales zonas de producción de carne de cerdo de la raza autóctona Porco Celta, protagonista en invierno de la Fiesta del Cocido.

SARRIA · PORTOMARÍN El Camino abandona Sarria por el barrio de San Lázaro. A pocos kilómetros se puede visitar el templo románico de Santiago de Barbadelo. Poco antes del lugar de Morgade se alza un mojón que indica que nos quedan 100 kilómetros para llegar a nuestro destino final.

El siguiente pueblo es Ferreiros y a la salida se llega ya al municipio de Paradela, que toma el relevo del sarriano. En estas tierras el Camino transcurre por Mirallos, donde se encuentra la iglesia románica de Santa María, por A Pena y por Vilachá, la última aldea de la ruta perteneciente a Paradela, donde se pueden contemplar bonitos paisa-

jes a orillas del río Loio y su confluencia con el Miño.

Nuestro siguiente destino es Portomarín, uno de los lugares más emblemáticos de la ruta francesa. Una de las mayores señas de identidad de Portomarín es la iglesia-fortaleza de San Xoán y San Nicolao, inconfundible por su gran rosetón. El templo se trasladó piedra a piedra al monte del Cristo antes de que inundasen el pueblo original para la construcción del embalse. Otro monumento emblemático es la capilla de A Virxe das Neves, que se asienta sobre un arco del viejo puente medieval. En este municipio los viajeros pueden degustar sabrosas anguilas y truchas, además de carne. También son famosas sus tartas y su aguardiente.

Poco antes de llegar a Morgade un mojón nos indica que quedan 100 km para Santiago de Compostela

PORTOMARÍN · PALAS DE REI Al salir de la capital cruzamos el municipio por algunos pueblos como Gonzar, O Hospital y Vendas de Narón, hasta llegar a A Ulloa. El primer ayuntamiento de esta comarca es Monterroso, del cual atravesamos Ligonde, donde se erige uno de los cruceiros más representativos de Galicia. El último tramo lugués del Camino Francés es Palas de Rei, enmarcado también en A Ulloa: Portos, Lestedo, A Brea, O Rosario y la capital municipal son los principales puntos de peregrinación en esta tierra, en la que se encuentra una de las joyas del Románico gallego, la iglesia de San Salvador de Vilar de Donas, en la parroquia de Vilar de Donas (monumento histórico-artístico), a la que se llega tomando un desvío a la derecha a la altura de Portos. Otros lugares por los que merece la pena desviarse de la ruta jacobea son el castillo de Pambre, y próximos a él, los torrentes de Mácara.

Los peregrinos podrán atestiguar que, además de por su patrimonio y por sus paisajes, las tierras de A Ulloa son excelentes por su gastronomía, donde los visitantes podrán reponer fuerzas con un buen plato de pulpo á feira, carnes y embutidos, además de sus quesos con denominación de origen ArzúaUlloa, que protagonizan la Feria del Queso de A Ulloa.

Tras dejar Palas de Rei, San Xiao do Camiño y Porto de Bois, el Camino entra en tierras coruñesas por O Couto, para seguir después por Melide, Ribadiso, Arzúa, Arca y el Monte do Gozo, últimos tramos antes de llegar a Santiago de Compostela.

Es la primera ruta de peregrinación conocida a la tumba del Apóstol. Quien marcó este viejo itinerario fue Alfonso II El Casto en el siglo IX, que caminó desde Oviedo hasta Santiago para visitar el sepulcro.

La ruta, de 321 km, recorre el occidente asturiano, entra en Galicia por tierras de A Fonsagrada y se une al Camino Francés en Melide.

TRAMO DEL CAMINO PRIMITIVO LUGO · SANTIAGO El peregrino pisa Galicia por el alto de O Acebo, en el municipio de A Fonsagrada y, tras recorrer varias aldeas de este territorio, continúa por los municipios de Baleira, Castroverde, Lugo, Guntín, Friol y Palas de Rei, para entroncar con el Camino Francés ya en tierras coruñesas de Melide. En total, la ruta se extiende a lo largo de 170 km, de los cuales los 50 últimos son ya por el Camino Francés.

EL CAMINO PRIMITIVO

O ACEBO · A FONSAGRADA La etapa gallega del Camino Primitivo o Ruta Jacobea Primitiva se inicia en el territorio de A Fonsagrada, en concreto en el alto de O Acebo, y sigue por los pueblos fonsagradinos de Fonfría, Silvela, Paradanova y, finalmente, la capital municipal, donde, además de por sus espléndidos paisajes de montaña y sus impresionantes cascadas, también dejará huella en los visitantes por su excelente gastronomía, en la cual el plato estrella es el butelo (embutido

hecho con costillas de cerdo), al que se le rinde homenaje el fin de semana anterior al Carnaval. Este embutido suele acompañar al cocido gallego, de gran tradición también en esta zona. El postre por excelencia es el “pastel da Fonsagrada”, que se elabora a base de almendra y crema.

El Camino ofrece en este punto dos itinerarios: A Proba de Burón, antigua capital del municipio, o O Padrón, que se vuelven a unir en Hospital de Montouto.

Saliendo de A Fonsagrada se cruza por A Bastida, A Proba de Burón y Xeitoso de Arriba y se junta con la de O Padrón en Hospital de Montouto.

La parroquia de O Padrón se halla a la salida de A Fonsagrada y continúa por los lugares de Vilardongo y Pedrafitela, hasta Hospital de Montouto, cuyo nombre guarda el recuerdo del antiguo hospital de peregrinos que estuvo activo desde el siglo XIV hasta el XX.

Camino Primitivo entra en O Cádavo, capital del ayuntamiento de Baleira, por el monte de A Matanza, así llamado porque, según

una antigua tradición, fue el lugar donde el ejército cristiano de Alfonso II se enfrentó a los musulmanes.

Los dos itinerarios discurren entre los 1.000-1.100 metros de altitud para descender progresivamente hasta los 700 del siguiente pueblo: Paradavella.

Desde O Cádavo la ruta continúa en ascenso hasta el alto de A Vaqueriza, para después descender camino del municipio de Castroverde. Pasamos por la capilla del Carmen y luego por Vilabade, donde se encuentra el conjunto arquitectónico conformado por el santuario gótico de Santa María de Vilabade, conocido popularmente como la Catedral de Castroverde y declarado monumento nacional en 1979. Merece la pena ver también su pazo anexo. Desde aquí un sendero discurre por luga-

res como San Miguel do Camiño, Souto de Torres y Vilardecás. Desde este punto es recomendable dar un pequeño rodeo y visitar la iglesia, hoy totalmente abandonada, de San Salvador de Soutomerille.

A continuación entramos en el municipio de Lugo por Gondar, luego Bascuas, As Casas da Viña y Castelo, ya en la capital provincial, a la que se accede por el barrio de A Chanca. Un breve itinerario de subida conduce a la Muralla, a la que se entra por la puerta de San Pedro o Toledana, una de las diez entradas del emblemático monumento.

LUGO, UN ALTO EN EL CAMINO En Lugo invitamos a los peregrinos a tomar un respiro, a perderse por sus plazas, sus calles, su arquitectura, sus parques, sus tiendas… y, por supuesto, a descubrir su excelente y variada gastronomía.

La Muralla bimilenaria (se levantó entre los años 265 y 310 de nuestra era) es el símbolo incontestable de la ciudad, incorporada en el año 2000 al catálogo de bienes Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la Unesco. Una buena opción, si nos quedan fuerzas,

es subir a su adarve y recorrer sus dos kilómetros de perímetro, a través de los cuales obtendremos una buena panorámica de los diversos barrios que la rodean.

Si preferimos contemplar la Muralla desde abajo, a pocos metros de la puerta de San Pedro por la que entramos nos espera el albergue de peregrinos, en la Rúa das Nóreas, muy próxima a la placita de O Cantiño, un espacio de gran belleza en el que hay un par de establecimientos con terrazas donde se puede tapear y hacer un merecido descanso.

El recorrido por intramuros sigue por O Progreso y A Raíña, calles en las que se encuentra una buena parte del pequeño comercio lucense. Estas convergen en la Rúa de San Pedro, la cual muere en la plaza Mayor.

Presidida por el Ayuntamiento, un bello edificio barroco de la primera mitad del XVIII, esta plaza está flanqueada por establecimientos hosteleros y comercios y es uno de los espacios

de reunión más tradicionales para vecinos y turistas.

En sus alrededores existen interesantes lugares, como el barrio de Campo Castelo, donde conviven tiendas de artesanía y establecimientos hosteleros. Hacia el sur de la plaza, ya camino de la puerta de Santiago, se halla el otro símbolo indiscutible de la ciudad, la catedral de Santa María, enclavada en la plaza homónima, donde también se emplaza el Palacio Episcopal.

Para dar cuenta de la afamada gastronomía lucense es aconsejable no perderse la histórica plaza del Campo, muy próxima a la de Santa María, donde, además, se asienta el Centro de Interpretación de la Muralla. Los locales de hostelería (restaurantes, bares, tabernas, cafeterías…) se reparten desde este punto por las míticas ca-

lles de A Tinería, Rúa da Cruz y Rúa Nova, esta última al lado del Museo Provincial y muy próxima al mercado de abastos y a la plaza de Santo Domingo.

Si se desea completar el recorrido de museos, en el centro histórico están la Casa dos Mosaicos, en la calle Doctor Castro (también conocida por “la calle de las dulcerías”); el Museo de San Roque, en la calle homónima; la Sala Porta Miñá (en A Calzada do Carme) y el Museo Interactivo de la Historia de Lugo (MIHL), este ya en la parte nueva de la ciudad.

Si el Camino se realiza en otoño, es bueno saber que entre el 4 y el 12 de octubre se celebra el San Froilán, la fiesta más grande de Lugo y una de las más importan34

tes de Galicia, de interés turístico nacional. Durante esos días, entre las múltiples actividades del programa, toma protagonismo indiscutible uno de los distintivos gastronómicos lucenses, el pulpo á feira, que se puede degustar en numerosos establecimientos de la ciudad.

Los caminantes se despiden de la ciudad amurallada por la puerta de Santiago (o por la puerta Miñá) y descienden hacia el puente romano, que salva el río Miño. Tras cruzar el puente se llega al barrio de San Lázaro, donde antiguamente existía un lazareto, y el itinerario atraviesa, entre otros lugares, O Santo Matías (O Veral), San Xoán do Alto, Seoane, O Burgo, Poutomillos y Bacurín.

A la altura de este último es recomendable desviarse a Santalla de Bóveda y visitar el santuario tardorromano (ss. II-IV) situado al lado de la actual iglesia parroquial.

Abandona Guntín por el lugar de Seixalbos y sigue por Xende (Palas de Rei) y O Paraño (Friol) para cruzar de nuevo Palas de Rei por los lugares de Senande, A Ponte Ferreira, Augas Santas, Merlán, Seixas, Casacamiño y O Hospital de Seixas. En este punto el Camino cambia de provincia para penetrar en tierras coruñesas, primero Toques y después Melide, donde confluye con el Camino Francés.

El siguiente municipio de la ruta es Guntín, al que se entra por San Román da Retorta. En esta parroquia se alza la iglesia románica de Santa Cruz (s. XII) y la réplica de un miliario romano, cuyo original se encuentra en el Museo Romano de Astorga.

A partir de San Román da Retorta hay dos itinerarios posibles:

·Camino alternativo por la antigua Vía Romana Se toma desde San Román, pasa por O Burgo do Negral y O Pacio con su iglesia de Santa María, para unirse de nuevo con el Camino oficial, esta vez en A Ponte Ferreira.

Con 815 km, el Camino Norte es la segunda ruta peninsular más larga detrás de la Vía de la Plata, procedente de Andalucía. Su trazado comienza en el Puente Internacional de Santiago sobre el río Bidasoa (Irún) y transcurre a lo largo de la cornisa cantábrica, cruzando el País Vasco, Cantabria, Asturias y Galicia.

TRAMO DEL CAMINO NORTE LUGO · SANTIAGO Desde Oviedo sigue por la costa asturiana hasta entrar en Galicia por A Mariña Oriental, en concreto por el municipio de Ribadeo, continúa por Barreiros para atravesar después las tierras de Lourenzá, Mondoñedo, Abadín, Vilalba, Guitiriz, Begonte y, por último, Friol, en dirección a Sobrado dos Monxes y Arzúa, donde se une con el Camino Francés. Esta ruta también tiene entrada en Galicia desde Vegadeo por Santiago de Abres, donde cruza el río Eo y entra en Lugo por el municipio de Trabada, para unirse en Lourenzá con la que viene por Ribadeo. La distancia total desde Ribadeo hasta Santiago de Compostela son 195 km.

RIBADEO · SAN XUSTO DE CABARCOS La etapa lucense del Camino Norte comienza en Ribadeo, capital de A Mariña Oriental. A este municipio se accede desde el pueblo asturiano de Figueras cruzando el puente de los Santos, que salva la bella ría de Ribadeo. Esta ciudad dejará al peregrino atrapado por su belleza. Además de sus pintorescas calles empedradas, donde se pueden degustar los excelentes mariscos y pescados del Cantábrico en numerosos establecimientos, cuenta con un valiosísimo patrimonio arquitectónico que recomendamos recorrer comenzando en la plaza de España, donde se erige

el edificio del Ayuntamiento, un palacete neoclásico del siglo XVIII que fue casa del marqués de Sargadelos.

Junto a él luce la torre de los Moreno, de estilo modernista, y en esta misma plaza se halla el convento de Santa Clara, fundado en el siglo XV, que todavía conserva partes del edificio primitivo y un claustro del siglo XVI. La visita ribadense se completa con la capilla de A Atalaia (s. XII), el antiguo cargadero, la zona portuaria, la isla Pancha con su emblemático faro y los arenales de Os Castros, As Illas… y, por supuesto, As Catedrais, uno de los puntos turísticos de Galicia por excelencia por sus impresionantes formaciones rocosas que el mar ha ido labrando con el paso del tiempo.

El viajero dice adiós a la capital municipal y pone rumbo hacia A Ponte de Arante, dejando atrás lugares como Ove o Santa Cruz. En A Ponte se inicia un tramo de ascenso para adentrarse después en Barreiros, otro ayuntamiento de la costa lucense también afamado por su buena gas-

tronomía y sus preciosas playas de arena blanca y fina como Arealonga, As Pasadas, Lóngara o Reinante. En este término municipal atravesamos núcleos como Vilamartín Pequeno, Vilamartín Grande, Gondar, Pedrido y Cerveiro para llegar a San Xusto de Cabarcos, último punto de Barreiros.

SAN XUSTO DE CABARCOS · LOURENZÁ A partir de San Xusto de Cabarcos la ruta asciende hasta el monte Calvario para luego iniciar un descenso a Lourenzá, donde espera al peregrino el imponente monasterio de San Salvador, monumento histórico-artístico desde 1974. El edificio fue fundado a finales del siglo X por el conde Osorio Gutiérrez, conocido como El Conde Santo, y en él destaca la fachada

principal, obra del arquitecto Casas Novoa, que también diseñó la fachada del Obradoiro de la catedral de Santiago. En el interior del cenobio podremos contemplar la capilla de Valdeflores, que alberga el sepulcro del Conde Santo, y la de Nosa Señora de Valvanera, en la que se integra el Museo de Arte Sacro. En el aspecto gastronómico recomendamos sus habas, reconocidas por su gran calidad como indicación geográfica protegida IGP Faba de Lourenzá.

LOURENZÁ · MONDOÑEDO Solo 9 kilómetros separan Lourenzá de Mondoñedo, una de las dos sedes del Obispado de Mondoñedo-Ferrol, y tierra de grandes escritores, entre los que es imposible no citar a Álvaro Cunqueiro.

El casco antiguo mindoniense es conjunto histórico-artístico desde

1985 y su edificio más representativo es la catedral, de estilo románico con añadidos y reformas posteriores, monumento nacional desde 1902 y basílica desde 1959.

En sus naves laterales acoge uno de los museos de arte sacro más importantes de Galicia. Por sus perfectas proporciones y su escasa altura este edificio recibe el sobrenombre de la “Catedral

arrodillada”. El paseo se puede completar con una visita al Consistorio Viejo, al Real Seminario Conciliar de Santa María, al puente romano de O Pasatempo o al barrio de Os Muíños.

MONDOÑEDO · ABADÍN Este trecho se inicia con una fuerte subida que conduce a la ermita de San Cosme de Montaña (Galgao) y más adelante Gontán, ya en el municipio de Abadín, donde se puede ver la iglesia de Santa María, un templo románico del siglo XII. Esta tierra es conocida por su Feria de Santos y su Fiesta del Grelo, producto que cuenta con denominación de origen.

Este tramo discurre por la comarca lucense de A Terra Chá, que debe su nombre a la extensa planicie en la que se asienta. Pasa por Castromaior, en Abadín; por Martiñán, ya en el municipio de Vilalba, donde se conserva un puente medieval, y por Goiriz, lugar donde se asienta la iglesia de Santiago y un cementerio neogótico. Desde aquí llegamos a Vilalba, capital de A Terra Chá, cuyo monumento más emblemático es el torreón de los Andrade, antigua torre de homenaje de un castillo medieval. A escasa distancia se levanta la iglesia de Santa María, en

una pequeña plaza. La capital chairega cuenta con varios productos que le han dado fama en el ámbito gastronómico, como sus capones y el queso de San Simón da Costa, un semicurado de leche de vaca con forma de gota, con denominación de origen.

VILALBA · BAAMONDE A la salida de Vilalba un mojón marca la distancia de 120 kilómetros a Santiago de Compostela. Este tramo atraviesa tierras regadas por los ríos Madalena, Trimaz y Labrada. Los viajeros dejan a su paso Alba, Pedrouzos o Ferreiro para adentrarse en tierras guitiricenses, por los lugares de O Codesal, Fontefría o Ferreira (aquí se encuentra la denominada Fonte

das Verrugas, que debe su nombre a la fama de sus aguas curativas), todos pertenecientes a la parroquia de Pígara.

BAAMONDE · SOBRADO DOS MONXES · ARZÚA En Baamonde (Begonte) merece la pena visitar la iglesia parroquial de Santiago, de estilo románico de transición. En las cercanías se encuentran las ruinas

de la fortaleza de Amarante, destruida durante las revueltas campesinas de la Edad Media.

Tras Baamonde, el peregrino vuelve a pisar Guitiriz, donde puede acercarse hasta la iglesia del siglo XIII de San Alberte, al pie del río Parga y su puente, un espacio con mucho encanto para tomar un respiro.

La tierra de Guitiriz es mítica por la fama de sus aguas curativas, que la han consolida-

do como una de las más importantes villas termales de Galicia. Además, son famosas sus sabrosas tartas de maíz, elaboradas artesanalmente en varios establecimientos del municipio.

La ruta continúa por Caínzos, Ceboleira y Carballedo, entre otros pueblos, y llegamos a Friol, municipio que recorremos por Seixón; Miraz, donde se alza la torre de Miraz, y Braña, desde donde podremos des-

viarnos para visitar la fortaleza medieval de San Paio de Narla, convertida hoy en museo etnográfico.

El tramo lucense final del Camino Norte atraviesa A Roxica, A Cabana, A Travesa de Ledro, Corteporcos y Marco das Pías, lugar de entrada en la provincia de A Coruña, en concreto en los ayuntamientos de Sobrado dos Monxes y Arzúa, donde confluye con el Camino Francés.

Recibe este nombre por tratarse de una ruta alternativa al Camino Francés que tomaban tradicionalmente muchos peregrinos para evitar la entrada de O Cebreiro, de difícil acceso en esa estación del año a causa de la nieve. La elección se hace en Ponferrada, donde, en lugar de seguir la ruta francesa, se toma un desvío a la izquierda, que viaja por los márgenes del río Sil. El recorrido gallego, de 210 km, se inicia en la comarca ourensana de Valdeorras, sigue por el sur de la provincia de Lugo hasta Lalín, ya en Pontevedra, donde se une al Camino Mozárabe o Vía de la Plata hasta Santiago de Compostela.

coge las aguas del Sil, este hace de frontera natural entre las provincias de Lugo y Ourense a lo largo de un profundo cañón que origina un paisaje excepcional. En este escarpado terreno, que desciende en una fuerte pendiente hasta los dos ríos, los habitantes de esta tierra cultivan desde hace siglos sus viñedos, mayoritariamente de uva mencía, cuyos excelentes resultados han adquirido fama mundial y sus caldos forman parte de las cinco denomina-

ciones de origen vinícolas que existen en Galicia, con el nombre de Ribeira Sacra.

Al paisaje y a sus vinos se une una vasta riqueza arquitectónica, conformada principalmente por el mayor acervo de templos del periodo románico de Galicia, que fueron levantados en los imponentes cañones; por todas estas razones este trayecto se convierte en una elección muy aconsejable.

El itinerario entra en Lugo por Montefurado, municipio de Quiroga, donde los peregrinos podrán acercarse al famoso túnel, construido por los romanos para desviar el curso del río en busca de oro. Otras señas de identidad de esta tierra son el castillo fortaleza de Torrenovaes y la iglesia de San Miguel de Montefurado.

En el aspecto gastronómico, además de su vino, es característica también la miel y, sobre todo, el aceite, que se elabora de forma artesanal en el molino de Bendilló, un proceso que se exhibe durante la Muestra de Aceite de Quiroga.

El siguiente punto es Ribas de Sil, al que se llega por el puente de hierro de San Clodio, que salva el río Sil. Este territorio se caracteriza por la belleza de sus paisajes fluviales y por sus interesantes muestras del Románico, como las iglesias de San Clodio y Santa María de Torbeo.

La ruta toma rumbo hacia A Pobra do Brollón, territorio asentado entre las altas cumbres de O Courel y el valle del Sil, donde el Románico está también presente en las iglesias de San Salvador de Ferreiros y San Xián de Veiga. Por su valor etnográfico merece la pena ver las casas del lugar de Parada dos Montes y las tradicionales bodegas de piedra, en Vilachá de Salvadur, donde se pueden degustar los caldos de la zona.

Despedimos A Pobra y el Camino de Invierno se adentra en Monforte de Lemos, capital de Terra de Lemos y epicentro de la Ribeira Sacra.

A la entrada de Monforte domina el paisaje el conjunto de San Vicente do Pino. Merece la pena subir hasta este lugar y contemplar la torre del Homenaje, el monasterio de San Vicente do Pino y el pazo de los Condes de Lemos, desde donde se obtienen, además, preciosas vistas del valle de Lemos.

Vilachá (A Pobra do Brollón)

Es interesante pasear también por el casco histórico monfortino y cruzar el río Cabe

por el puente romano que conduce al convento de las Clarisas. En la parte baja de la ciudad se alza el colegio de Nosa Señora a Antiga, conocido como “El Escorial de Galicia”. En los alrededores también se puede visitar el pazo medieval de Tor, que hoy funciona como museo etnográfico.

Tras dejar atrás varios núcleos poblacionales, se llega a A Barxa, primer pueblo de O Saviñao, territorio que custodia joyas románicas como el monasterio de San Estevo de Ribas de Miño, la iglesia del antiguo cenobio de San Vitorio de Ribas de Miño y San Paio de Diomondi, por citar solo algunos.

Aunque no está exactamente en la ruta, merece la pena conocer la parroquia de A Cova, donde se erige el bello templo de San Martiño da Cova y el mirador de O Cabo do Mundo, desde donde sorprende una impresionante vista del meandro conocido como O Cabo do Mundo sobre el río Miño. A menos de 1 km se sitúa la playa de A Cova, un lugar muy agradable para tomar un descanso antes de retomar la marcha.

El peregrino dice adiós a O Saviñao y entra en Chantada, tierra de excelentes vinos y de interesantes templos románicos, como los de Santa María de Pesqueiras, Santa María de Nogueira o San Salvador de Asma. Es aconsejable conocer el centro de la villa, dar un paseo en catamarán desde el pueblo de Belesar hasta la isla de Maiorga o descubrir dos de sus celebraciones más arraigadas, el Entroido Ribeirao y el Folión de Carros, fiesta en la que conviven teatro, carnaval y etnografía.

El último tramo de suelo lucense de esta ruta aumenta su dificultad, pues el peregrino debe realizar la subida hasta la cumbre del monte Faro (1.100 m de altitud), frontera natural entre Lugo y Ourense. No obstante, el esfuerzo merece la pena porque desde este alto, donde se erige la ermita de Nosa Señora do Faro, se pueden llegar a vislumbrar las cumbres de O Courel, Os Ancares, Pena Trevinca, Manzaneda y monte Farelo.

RUTA ALTERNATIVA DESDE CASTRO CALDELAS Existe una variante de esta ruta que se toma en el municipio ourensano de Castro Caldelas y entra en nuestra provincia por A Ponte Paradela, cruza tierras de Sober y se une con la vía principal en Monforte de Lemos. El recorrido de esta variante es de 19 km.

Si se elige esta variante, Sober ofrece al peregrino algunos de los cañones más impresionantes del río Sil, que se pueden apreciar desde espectaculares miradores, como el de Cadeiras, que alberga un santuario dedicado a la Virgen de los

Remedios, o los balcones de Bolmente y Os Chelos. También destacan sus iglesias románicas de Santa María de Proendos, San Vicente de Pinol y San Xián de Lobios. Igualmente es muy apreciada su cerámica negra, que se elabora en la parroquia de Gundivós. En el ámbito gastronómico, Sober es reconocida por su vino de Amandi y sus roscas.

Ya en la provincia de Pontevedra el Camino de Invierno transita por los municipios de Rodeiro y Lalín para confluir con el Camino Mozárabe o Vía de la Plata en A Laxe (parroquia de Bendoiro), desde donde restan 50 km para llegar a Santiago de Compostela.

Presentamos dos itinerarios alternativos, que, aunque no están marcados como rutas jacobeas oficiales, son trayectos muy atractivos para conocer lugares de alto interés natural y arquitectónico, y para disfrutar de su gastronomía: Camino Norte Interior y Camino del Mar. CAMINO NORTE INTERIOR Transcurre por la comarca de Meira, situada entre la Terra Chá y las tierras lucenses, por la que el caminante podrá conocer el nacimiento del Miño y recorrer espacios naturales de gran belleza, entre fragas de bosques autóctonos, humedales y cascadas o descubrir interesantes muestras arquitectónicas, como el monasterio de Santa María en Meira, los hornos de Vilaoudriz en A Pontenova, o uno de los más destacados yacimientos arqueológicos de Galicia, el Castro de Viladonga, perteneciente al ayuntamiento de Castro de Rei.

THE FRENCH WAY

It is considered as the main pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, it enters in Spain through Roncesvalles and crosses the north of Spain with a total of 754 km until it reaches Santiago de Compostela.

SECTION OF THE FRENCH WAY LUGO·SANTIAGO In the province of Lugo, the French Way enters through the village of O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro), between Os Ancares and O Courel mountains, it crosses Triacastela and from here, the pilgrim can choose two routes: San Xil route or Samos route that are joined again in Calvor around 4 km from Sarria. The route also crosses the municipalities of Paradela, Portomarín, Monterroso and Palas de Rei to get inside in Melide and Arzúa later, already in Coruña grounds. The official signposting of the section along Galician parts consists of 152 km until it reaches Santiago.

THE WAY’S DOOR: O CEBREIRO The village of O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro) is the privileged entry to the French Way in the province of Lugo. From there, at 1300 metres, the beautiful mountain range galaico-leonés can be seen. In this stop, pilgrims will enjoy its stone pavement streets, its houses and its pallozas (a traditional dwelling of the Serra

dos Ancares of northwest Spain), millenary pre-roman dwellings, one of which has an ethnographic museum.

The jewel of its monumental heritage is the Santa María A Real Church (IX century). Those who wish to have lunch in O Cebreiro, will be able to taste its creamy cheese, with certificate of origin Cebreiro, as well as, beef and stuffed pork, bread, honey or home-made cakes.

O CEBREIRO · TRIACASTELA From O Cebreiro, the route goes on towards the parish of Liñares, where the pre-Romanesque Santo Estevo church is erected. From here, the San Roque peak (1275 m) is achieved, where there is a bronze statue to the pilgrim and from which beautiful views can be seen. The next village is called Hospital de la Condesa, which receives this name because it has had a hospital for walkers in the past. Later on, Padornelo is found and a new section of ascent leads to O Poio peak (1335 m), an ascent that provides another amazing scene of the mountains. After more than 3km we arrive in A Fonfría, which is the last population nucleus of Pedrafita do Cebreiro.

The rest of the route passes downhill until it reaches O Biduedo and a bit later Fillobal. Both of them belong to Triacastela. Its jubilee link provides this municipality with buildings of interesting architectural value as for example Santiago de Triacastela church. To have lunch, it is advisable to taste the traditional plates of the mountains of Lugo: shoulder of pork, chorizos (spicy pork sausages), potatoes, pork...

From here, the way is divided and it offers us two options: to head towards Sarria or to take an alternative route, which will take us to Sarria likewise but passing through Samos.

The route through San Xil It is the traditional route and this choice will allow us to enjoy rural landscapes where native woods of chestnuts trees and oak trees mix with meadows. The route crosses rural nucleus such as A Furela, Pintín and Calvor, to get inside Sarria through the neighborhood of Vigo.

The route through Samos Samos grew around San Xulián monastery and Santa Basilisa. This architectural ensemble (VI century) is one of the most amazing monuments in the Camino de Santiago in Spain. It still has a small community of benedictine monks, who supply accommodation and show the abbey in guided visits where one can enjoy its cloisters, such as the Padre Feijoo’s, one of the biggest cloisters in Spain, and the Gothic one or Nereidas, as well as the paintings of the inside building. Close to the monastery the Ciprés Chapel is found, a Mozarabic building from the X century. Samos also possesses a wide gastronomic offer where we can highlight its pork and beef, vegetables and native honey.

From Samos, the way goes on towards Sarria, one of the most important villages of the French way in Galicia. This municipal capital occupies a great number of

hostels and it is the selected place by many walkers in order to start the pilgrimage, since it is found in the ideal distance to get the Compostela. In its old area, the remains of a medieval castle can be found, a Magdalena monas tery and San Salvador and Santa Mariña churches. To recharge our ba#eries we remember that this is one of the main areas of pork production of the native breed Porco Celta, which is the protagonist of the Stew Fair in winter.

SARRIA · PORTOMARÍN The way leaves Sarria through San Lázaro neighbourhood. At very few kilometres from here, one can visit the Santiago de Barbadelo Romanesque temple.

Just before arriving in Morgade, a boundary marker is seen, which indicates that 100 km are left to arrive in our final destiny.

The next village is Ferreiros and in its way out we reach the municipality of Paradela, which replaces the town of Sarria. In Paradela grounds, the way goes by Mirallos, where the Romanesque churches of Santa María, A Pena and Vilachá are found. This is the last village of the way that belongs to Paradela, where beautiful landscapes can be seen at the bank of the Loio river and its junction with the river Miño.

After Paradela Portomarín comes, which is one of the most symbolic places of the French route. One of the greatest identity signs of Portomarín is the church-for-

tress of San Xoán and San Nicolao, unmistakable by its great rose window. The temple was moved stone by stone to the Christ mountain before they inundated the original village for the building of the reservoir. Another symbolic monument is A Virxe das Neves Chapel, which is se#led on an arch of the old medieval bridge. In this municipality travellers can taste delicious European eels and trouts as well as meat. Its cakes and liquors are also famous.

PORTOMARÍN · PALAS DE REI By leaving the capital, we cross the municipality through several villages such as Gonzar, O Hospital and Vendas de Narón, until we reach the region of A Ulloa. The first municipality of this territory is Monterroso, through which we cross Ligonde, where one of the most representative transepts is found in Galicia. The last section of the French way in Lugo is Palas de Rei, also framed within A Ulloa: Portos, Lestedo, A Brea, O Rosario and the municipal capital are the main pilgrimage places in this land, where one of the jewels of the galician Romanesque is found, San Salvador de Vilar de Dornas church, in the parish of Vilar de Donas (historic-artistic monument), where one can reach it through a diversion to the right near Portos. Other places that are worth diverting from the Jubilee route are the Pambre Castle and near to it, Mácara waterfalls.

Pilgrims will be able to testify that, apart from its heritage and its landscapes, A Ulloa grounds are excelent due to its gastronomy, where visitors will be able to recharge ba#eries with a good place of Octopus á feira (boiled with

potatoes), meat and cold meat, as well as its cheese with certificate of origin Arzúa-Ulloa, which is the protagonist in the A Ulloa Cheese Fair.

PALAS DE REI · MELIDE · ARZÚA · SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA After leaving Palas de Rei, San Xiao do Camiño and Porto de Bois, the path goes into A Coruña grounds through O Couto, to continue then through Melide, Ribadiso, Arzúa, Arca and Monte de Gozo, last sections before arriving in Santiago de Compostela.

THE PRIMITIVE WAY

It is the first known pilgrimage route to the Apostle’s tomb. It was Alfonso II El Casto, who marked this old itinerary in the IX century, who walked from Oviedo to Santiago to visit the tomb. The route, of 321 km, goes through the West part of Asturias, it goes into A Fonsagrada lands and it is joined to the French Way in Melide (A Coruña).

SECTION OF THE PRIMITIVE WAY LUGO · SANTIAGO The pilgrim walks on Galicia through O Acebo peak, in the municipality of A Fonsagrada and after going over several villages of this territory, it goes on through O Cádavo (Baleira), Castroverde, Lugo, Guntín, Friol and Palas de Rei, where it is connected with the French Way in Melide. In total, the route spreads out over 170 km.

O ACEBO · A FONSAGRADA The Galician section of the Primitive Way or Primitive Jubilee Route starts in A Fonsagrada, more specifically in O Acebo peak, and it goes on through some villages from A Fonsagrada, such as Fonfría, Silvela, Paradanova and finally the municipal capital, where apart from its magnificient mountain landscapes and its amazing waterfalls, it will also leave a mark on visitors due to its cuisine, where the main dish is the butelo (meat-stuffed pork

intestine), to which is paid homage the previous weekend to Carnival. This cold meat is usually accompanied by the cocido gallego (a traditional Spanish stew), which is so typical in this area. The dessert par excellence is the A Fonsagrada cake that is made of almonds and cream.

The way offers two itineraries at this point: A Proba de Burón or O Padrón, which are joined again in Hospital de Montouto.

The route through A Proba de Burón This route goes on through A Bastida, A proba de Burón and Xeitoso de Arriba, and is joined with the one of O Padrón in Hospital de Montouto.

The route through O Padrón the parish of O Padrón is found at the way out of A Fonsagrada and goes on through the places of Vilardongo and Pedrafita, until arriving to Hospital de Montouto, whose name keeps the memory of the ancient hospital of pilgrims that was active since XIV century until XX century.

The itinerary passes in this section at 1.000-1.100 metres high, and then it goes down progressively until the 700 metres high in the following village: Paradavella.

PARADAVELLA · O CÁDAVO From there, we go on through A Calzada and A Degolada, which is the first parish of the municipality of Baleira, which continues to O Couto to continue to A Lastra, where it goes down again until arriving to A Fontaneira,

a place with a beautiful church consecrated to Santiago.

The Primitive Way goes into O Cádavo, which is the capital of the town council of Baleira, through A Matanza mountain, which is called like this according an ancient tradition, which was the place where the Christian army of Alfonso II fought against Muslim people.

O CÁDAVO · LUGO From O Cádavo the route goes on rising until arriving to the A Vaqueriza peak, and then it goes down to the municipality of Castroverde. At the entrance, in Vilabade, we can appreciate the architectural ensemble made up of the gothic sanctuary of Santa María de Vilabade and its annexed country house.

From Castroverde, a way passes through places like San Miguel do Camiño, Souto de Torres and Vilardecás.

From here, it is advisable to make a short detour and visit the San Salvador de Soutomerille church that is today totally abandoned.

Later on, we go into the municipality of Lugo, through Gondar, then Bascuas, As Casas da Viña and Castelo, already in the capital of the province, which one can access through the A Chanca neighbourhood. A short rise route leads to the Wall, where one have access to it through San Pedro door or Toledana (kilometre 103.625 to Santiago), one of the ten entries to the symbolic monument.

A Mosqueira (Lugo)

LUGO, A STOP WITHIN THE WAY In Lugo we invite the pilgrim to take a break, to go over indispensable places calmly and to find out on your own the reason of the slogan... E para comer, Lugo [and to eat, Lugo] The bimillenary Wall (it was erected between the years 265 and 310 from our era) is the indisputable symbol of the city, which was incorporated in the year 2000 to the catalogue of World Heritage Site properties from the Unesco. The tour through its adarve is of 2 km of perimeter, through which we will obtain a good viewpoint of the different neighbourhoods that surround it.

At very few metres from the San Pedro door, we will see the pilgrims’ hostel placed in Nóreas Street, very close to the small square of O Cantiño, a place with great beauty where there is a couple of places with terraces in order to taste the tapas and to take the well-deserved break. … E para comer, Lugo

THE PRIMITIVE WAY

The tour within the walls goes on through O Progreso and A Raíña streets, where one can see a great part of the small businesses. These two streets converge in the main square, dominated by the Town Council, a beautiful baroque building from the first half of the XVIII. It is flanked by commercial establishments and it is one of the most traditional meeting places for neighbours and tourists.

Nearby, there are interesting places, like Campo Castelo neighbourhood, with craftwork shops and catering sections. Towards the south of the square, on the way to Santiago door, another indisputable symbol of the city is found, Santa María Cathedral, enclosed in the homonymous square, where we can also see the Episcopal Palace. During this year, due to the proclamation of the Jubilee Year, pilgrims will be able to visit the Holy Door, if they wish it. This door gives access to San Froilán Chapel from the facade, which is opened to the public since the 13th of December 2015 until the 26th of November 2016.

To notice the so famous cuisine from Lugo, it is advisable not to miss the historic Campo square, very close to Santa Maria’s, where apart from this, Interpretive Centre of the Wall is found. The hotel trade (restaurants, bars, cafeterias...) are shared out from this point through the typical A Tinería, Cruz and Nova streets. This last one is next to the Provincial Museum and very close to the market and Santo Domingo square.

In case of completing the tour through the different museums, in the historic centre we can see Casa dos Mosai76

cos, placed in Doctor Castro street (it is also known with the name of calle de las dulcerías (a street full of confectioner shops), San Roque Museum, in the homonymous street, Sala Porta Miñá (Carme street), and the Interactive Museum of the History of Lugo (Mihl), which is placed in the new part of the city.

Apart from culture and cuisine, one can breathe nature in Lugo. In the city centre itself, the Rosalia de Castro park can be found and at the banks of the Rato and Miño rivers, a long walk is also found, which has been built in the last years and it allows to surround the city through the banks of the two rivers and to enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes. For hydrotheraphy lovers, at the foot of the river Miño you will find the historic spa, where the remains of the ancient roman baths can be visited.

In case the Jubilee itinerary is planned to go into through Lugo, the days 16th and 19th of June, pilgrims will be able to know Arde Lucus, a multitudinous celebration in honour to the roman past of the city, which is considered as tourist a#ractions of Galicia.

In case the St James’ Way is done in autumn, it is advisable to know that between the 4th and 12th of October, the San Froilán Fair is celebrated, the biggest fair in Lugo and one of the most important ones in Galicia, which is is considered as national tourist a#ractions. During those days, among the numerous activities of the pro-

gramme, one of the distinctive gastronomic producst of Lugo gains prominence: pulpo á feira (fair style octopus), which can be savored in many places all around the city.

Lugo is one of the chosen places to do the St James’ Way, fulfilling the minimum distance of 100 km that is required to get the Compostela (a type of credentials that proves that you have done it). The distance from here to Santiago is of 101,8 km (105 km according to the Pilgrim Credential).

LUGO · SAN ROMÁN DA RETORTA Walkers say goodbye to the walled city through the Santiago door (or through Miñá door) and go down to the roman bridge, which spans the Miño river. After crossing the bridge one arrives to San Lázaro neighbourhood and the itinerary goes through, among other villages, O Santo Matías (O Veral), San Xoán do Alto, Seoane, O Burgo, Poutomillos, Bacurín, where the Romanesque church of San Miguel can be seen (second half of the XII century). At the level of Bacurín it is advisable to divert to Santalla de Bóveda and visit the late-Roman sanctuary (II-IV centuries), which is placed next to the current parish church.

The next municipality of the route is Guntín, where one can access to it through San Román da Retorta. In this parish, the Santa Cruz Romanesque church (XII) and a replica of a roman milliarius can be seen. From San

Román da Retorta onwards, there are two possible itineraries: Oficial Primitive Way It leaves Guntín through Seixalbos and it continues through Xende (Palas de Rei), O Paraño (Friol) and it goes into again Palas de Rei through the places of Senande, A Ponte Ferreira, Augas Santas, Merlán, O Hospital de Seixas, Casacamiño e O Hospital de Seixas. At this point, the way changes the province in order to penetrate in Coruña lands, where the first place is Torques and the second one is Melide, where it converges with the French Way. Alternative way through the ancient Roman Route It is taken from San Román da Retorta, and it arrives at O Burgo do Negral and Pacio, and flows into the French Way.

THE NORTH WAY OR THE COAST ROUTE

With 815 km, North Way is the second longest peninsular route of the Vía de la Plata, coming from Andalucía. Its route starts in the International Bridge of Santiago, above the Bidasoa river (Irún) and goes by the Cantabrian region, going through País Vasco, Asturias and Galicia.

SECTION OF THE NORTH WAY LUGO·SANTIAGO From Oviedo, it goes through the Asturian coast until it reaches Galicia through Eastern Mariña, more specifically through the municipality of Ribadeo. It goes on through Barreiros in order to cross later Lourenzá, Mondoñedo, Abadín, Vilalba, Guitiriz, Begonte and finally Friol, towards Sobrado dos Monxes and Arzúa, where it is joined with the French Way. This route also enters into Galicia from Vegadeo through Santiago de Abres, where it crosses the Eo river and enters into Lugo through the municipality of Trabada, in order to join itself in Lourenzá with the one that comes from Ribadeo. The total distance from Ribadeo to Santiago de Compostela is 195 km.

RIBADEO · SAN XUSTO DE CABARCOS The period of the North Way in Lugo starts in Ribadeo, which is the capital of A Mariña Oriental.To this municipality one can access from the asturian village of Figueras, crossing the Os Santos bridge, which covers the beautiful Ribadeo sea inlet. This city will leave a mark to the pilgrim due to its beauty. Apart from its pictoresque stone streets, where one can taste the excellent seafood and fish from the Cantabrian Sea in different gastronomicals establishments, it also counts on a valuable architectural heritage that we recommend to visit, starting by España square, where the town hall building is erected, a neoclassical small palace of the XVIII century that was the house of the Sargadelos marchess. Next to it, the tower of the Moreno is found, with a modernist style. In this same square, Santa Clara convent is also seen, which was founded in the XV century. It still preserves parts of the primitive building and a cloister of the XVI century. The visit to Ribadeo must be completed with the A Atalaia Chapel (XIII century), the ancient loading bay, the port area, the Pancha island with its symbolic lighthouse and the sandy areas of Os Castros, As illas.. and of course, As Catedrais, one of the most touristic points of Galicia per excellence due to its amazing rocky formations that the sea has been done after years.

The traveller says goodbye to the municipal capital and goes towards A Ponte de Arante, leaving behind places like Ove or Santa Cruz. In A Ponte, a rising section is initially found in order to get into Barreiros, another town council of the coast of Lugo, which is also famous for its good cuisine and its beautiful beaches of white soft sand such as Arealonga’s, As Pasadas’ or Reinante’s. In this municipal section, we cross places as for example Vilamartín Pequeno and Vilamartín Grande, Gondar, Pedrido and Cerveiro to reach San Xusto de Cabarcos, the last point of Barreiros.

SAN XUSTO DE CABARCOS · LOURENZÁ From San Xusto de Cabarcos, the route rises to Calvario mountain in order to then initiate a descent to Lourenzá, where the pilgrim waits for the impressive monastery of San Salvador, which is a historic-artistic monument from the year 1974. The building was founded at the end of the X century by Osorio Gutiérrez earl, known as O Conde Santo. In this building, the main façade is highlighted, which was the work of Casas Novoa, who also designed the Obradoiro façade of the Saint James Catedral. Inside the monastery, we will see the Valdeflores chapel, which harbours Conde Santo and A Nosa Señora de Valvanera tombs, which integrate the Sacred Art Museum.

LOURENZÁ · MONDOÑEDO Lourenzá is separated from the city of Mondoñedo only by 9 km. Nowadays, Mondoñedo is one of the See of the Bishopric of Mondoñedo-Ferrol and is also cradle of great writers, among them it is impossible not to mention Álvaro Cunqueiro.

The old city is historic-artistic ensemble from 1985 whose most symbolic insignia is the cathedral, with a romanesque style with added and later changes, a national monument from 1902 and basilica from 1959. In its side naves, one of the most important sacred art museums of Galicia is found.

Before continuing with the route, it is advisable to taste the famous cake of Mondoñedo that will recharge our batteries for the way. After the walk along the history of Mondoñedo, the route goes by different parishes, in a landscape dominated by chestnuts, oak and eucalyptus trees.

MONDOÑEDO · ABADÍN From this last section a strong rise leads to San Cosme de Montaña (Galgao) chapel and later on, Gontán, already in the municipality of Abadín, where we can visit a romanesque temple of the XII century. This region is a land of turnip tops that count on certificate of origin. … E para comer, Lugo

THE NORTH WAY

ABADÍN · VILALBA This part of the North Way goes by the Lugo region of A Terra Chá, which receives its name due to the wide flatland where it is settled to.

The way goes by later through Xoán de Catromaior, Martiñán with the medieval bridge of A Pontevella and the Santiago de Goiriz church and its neogothic cemetery. From this point, we reach the capital of A Terra Chá. The most symbolic building of this area is the Andrade fortified tower, which was an ancient homage tower of a medieval castle. At a very short distance, Santa María church is erected, in a small square.

The capital of A Terra Chá counts on several products that make it famous in the gastronomic sphere, among them its capons, San Simón da Costa cheese, half-mature of cow milk dropshapped, which has a certificate of origin.

VILALBA · BAAMONDE At the way out of Vilalba, a boundary marks the distance of 120 km to Santiago de Compostela. This section of the North Way crosses lands watered by the Magdalena, Trimaz and Labrada rivers. Travellers leave behind Alba, Pedrouzos or Ferreiro to get into lands of Guitiriz, through places such as O Codesal, Fontefría or Ferreira (here, the so-called Fonte das Verrugas: Wart Fountain is found that is called like this due to the fame of its curative waters), all of them belonging to the parish of Pígara.

BAAMONDE · SOBRADO DOS MONXES · ARZÚA In Baamonde, it is worth visiting the Santiago parisch church, of romanesque style of transition. In the vicinity, the ruins of the Amarante fortress are found, which was destroyed during the peasant riots of the Middle Ages. After Baamonde, the pilgrim crosses again the municipality of Guitiriz

where one can visit the San Alberte church of the XIII century, at the foot of Parga river and its bridge, one of the most beautiful places of Guitiriz.

The route continues through Caínzos, Ceboleira and Carballedo, among other villages, we reach Friol, the last municipality of Lugo of the North Way. We pass through Seixón, Miraz d (where De Miraz tower is erected) and Braña where we invite you to divert to visit San Paio de Narla fortress.

The route goes by A Roxica, A Cabana, A Travesa de Ledro, Corteporcos and Marco das Pías, the entrance place to the province of A Coruña, more specifically in the Sobrado Dos Monxes and Arzúa town councils, where it converges with the French Way. · From Baamonde (Begonte) the minimal requested distance is achieved to get the Compostela since 102 km are left to Santiago.

THE SOUTH OR THE WINTER WAY

It is named like this because it is an alternative route to the French Way, which traditionally many pilgrims took in order to avoid the O Cebreiro entrance, due to its difficult access in that time of the year because of the snow.

The choice is made in Ponferrada, where, instead of following the French route, you divert to the left that goes through the banks of the Sil River. The Galician tour, made of 210 km, is initiated in Valdeorras (in the region of Ourense), which goes on through the south of the province of Lugo until reaching Lalín, already in Pontevedra, where it is joined to the Mozarabic Way or the Silver Way until Santiago de Compostela.

SECTION OF THE SOUTH WAY LUGO ·SANTIAGO In its way to the south of the province of Lugo, the Winter Way goes through great part of the Ribeira Sacra. In this “sacred riverbank”, where the River Miño is joined with the Sil’s, since this last one serves as a natural frontier between the provinces of Lugo and Ourense along a deep cannon that originates an exceptional landscape. In this sheer land, which goes down to a strong slope up to the

two rivers, the inhabitants of this area grow their vineyards many years ago, mainly Mencía grape (a variety of grape), whose excellent output has acquired worldwide fame and its wines are part of the five wine certificate of origin that exist in Galicia, with the name of Ribeira Sacra.

To the landscape and its wines, a huge architectural wealth has to be added, made up mainly by the greatest heritage of temples from the Romanesque period of Galicia, which were erected in the impressive cannons; for these reasons this route becomes a very advisable choice to do.

The route goes into Lugo through Montefurado, a municipality of Quiroga, where pilgrims will be able to approach to the famous tunnel, built by the Romans to divert the course of the river in search of gold. Other distinguishing marks of this land are the Torrenovaes Castle-Fortress and San Miguel de Montefurado church.

In the gastronomic sphere, apart from its wine, the honey is also characteristic and above all, the oil, which is elaborated in a traditional way in the Bendilló mill, a process that is displayed during the exhibition of Oil from Quiroga.

The next point of the way is Ribas de Sil. One can arrive at it through the iron bridge of San Clodio, 82

which covers the Sil River. This region is characterized by the beauty of its river landscapes and its interesting samples of the Romanesque, such as San Clodio and Santa María de Torbeo churches.

The route is headed towards A Pobra do Brollón, which is a territory established among the highest summits of O Courel and the Sil Valley, where the Romanesque is also present in San Salvador de Ferreiros and San Xián de Veiga churches. Due to its ethnographic value, it is worth visiting the houses of the area of Parada dos Montes and the traditional stone wine cellars, in Vilachá de Salvadur, where one can taste the soups of the area.

We leave A Pobra and the Winter Way penetrates into Monforte de Lemos, which is the capital of Terra de Lemos and epicentre of the Ribeira Sacra.

At the entrance of Monforte, San Vicente do Pino ensemble dominates the landscape. It is worth going up this place and contemplating the Homage Tower, San Vicente do Pino monastery and the country house of the Condes de Lemos (Count of Monforte de Lemos). From here, amazing views to Lemos valley can also be seen.

It is also interesting to walk along the old area of Monforte and to cross the Cabe River through the roman bridge that leads to Las Clarisas Mo-

nastery. Within the low part of the city, the great building of Nosa Señora a Antiga school is erected, and this is known as El Escorial de Galicia.

In the surroundings the medieval country house Tor can also be visited, which today works as an ethnographic Museum.

Pantón is the next town hall where the route takes us. Here, one of the most representative monasteries of the Ribeira Sacra can be found, that is, San Salvador de Ferreira de Pantón monastery (XI century); other architectural showings are San Miguel de Eiré, San Vicente do Pombeiro or Santo Estevo de Atán. In this territory, the way passes through Reguengo country house, an interesting showing of civil architecture of this municipality.

After leaving several populated places, A Barxa is found. It is the first village of O Saviñao, where there are Romanesque jewels such as the San Estevo de Ribas de Miño monastery, church of the ancient monastery of San Vitorio de Ribas de Miño and San Paio de Diomondi, just to mention some of them. Although it is not within the route, it is worth knowing A Cova parish, where the beautiful temple of San Martiño da Cova is erected and O Cabo do Mundo viewpoint, from where an amazing view of the meander named Cabo do Mundo above the Miño river can be seen. Less than 1 km,

A Cova beach is placed, a pleasant beach to take a rest before restarting the way.

The pilgrim says goodbye to O Saviñao and goes into Chantada, which is a land of excellent wines and interesting Romanesque temples, such as, Santa María de Pesqueiras, Santa María de Nogueira or San Salvador de Asma’s. It is advisable to know the centre of the town, to go out for a walk by catamaran from Belesar village until the Maiorga Island or to find out two of its most settled celebrations: Carnival and the Foilón de Carros, a fair where theatre, carnival and ethnography are mixed.

and it goes into our province through A Ponte Paradela. It passes through lands of Sober and it is joined with the main way in Monforte de Lemos. The tour of this diversion is of 19 km.

If this diversion is chosen, Sober offers some of the most impressive cannons of Sil River to the pilgrim.

They can be seen from the spectacular viewpoints, such as the Cadeiras’, which harbours a sanctuary consecrated to Los Remedios Virgin or the balconies of Bolmente and Os Chelos. It is also advisable to highlight the Romanesque churches of Santa María

de Proendos, San Vicente de Pinol and San Xián de Lobios. Similarly its black ceramic is highly regarded, which is made in Gundivós parish. In the gastronomic sphere, Sober is known for its Amandi wine and its roscas.

Already in the province of Pontevedra, the Winter Way passes through the municipalities of Rodeiro and Lalín in order to converge with the Mozarabic Way or the Silver Way in A Laxe (Bendoiro parish), from where 50 km remain until reaching Santiago de Compostela.

The last section of land belonging to Lugo of this route rises its difficulty, since the pilgrim must climb until reaching the peak of Faro mountain (1.100 metres of altitude), which is the natural frontier between Lugo and Ourense. However, the effort is worthy because from this peak, where Nosa Señora do Faro chapel is erected, one can discern the peaks of O Courel, Os Ancares, Pena Trevinca, Manzaneda and Farelo mountain.

The total distance of this route is of 105 km.

OTHER ROUTES

We present two alternative routes, which although are not marked as official Jacobean routes, are very attractive places to know due to its high natural and architectural interest and to enjoy its gastronomic delicacies: Interior North Way and The Sea Way. INTERIOR NORTH WAY It goes by the region of Meira, located between the Terra Chá and lands of Lugo, where the walker will be able to know the Miño birth and go across natural spaces of great beauty, among scrubs of native forests, wetlands and waterfalls or to find out interesting architectural showings, such as the Santa María monastery in Meira, V ilaoudriz furnaces in A Pontenova, or one of the most symbolic archaeological sites of O Castro de Rei. From San Tirso de Abres, this route goes into Galicia through O Cairo (A Pontenova) and goes on through Riotorto, Meira, Pol, Castro de Rei and Friol to join again with the North Way in Sobrado dos Monxes.

THE SEA WAY It goes through one of the most coveted touristic places of Galicia, the Mariña lucense, that is, the coast of Lugo. The way goes through from west to east from Ribadeo and, bordering the whole Mariña, it crosses Barreiros, Foz, Burela, Cervo, Xove, Viveiro and O Vicedo, towards Ortigueira and Ferrol, already in the province of A Coruña, where it connects with the English Way. In this route, the beauty of the Galician cantabrian li#oral surprises us, its beaches with soft and white sand, its excellent cuisine, where fish and seafood prevail, and its historic-artistic heritage, which is present in monuments like the San Martiño de Foz basilica; the historic-artistic ensemble of Sargadelos and San Cibrao village, in Cervo, the old city of Viveiro or the Riobarba church and the O Porto bridge in O Vicedo, just to mention some of them.
