INTRODUCIÓN GALEGO

escritor mindoniense Álvaro Cunqueiro definiu Galicia como “o país dos mil ríos”. Nesta descrición a provincia de Lugo ocupa un lugar destacado, porque este territorio é nunha alta porcentaxe auga, omnipresente de múltiples formas: ríos, rías, lagoas, fervenzas, fontes, mananciais e, por suposto, mar. A súa presenza detéctase xa na propia toponimia, na que se rexistran lugares como A Fonsagrada, A Mariña, A Pontenova, Portomarín, Ribadeo, Ribas de Sil, Ribeira de Piquín, Riotorto… Por iso, a Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Hostelería de Lugo (Apehl) decidiu que na edición da guía …E para comer, Lugo deste ano sexa a auga a que nos conduza cara a unha nova viaxe por terras lucenses.

Arealonga (Barreiros)

Percorreremos a provincia a través de catro capítulos dedicados ao mar Cantábrico, ao río Miño, á Ribeira Sacra e, o último, aos Camiños de Santiago que atravesan Lugo, en moitos tramos preto do mar ou a pé de río. Ao mar Cantábrico e aos numerosos cursos fluviais que bañan estas terras debemos agradecer un vasto patrimonio natural, que conforman maxestosas paisaxes de costa (areais, cantís, cabos, illas…) e de montaña, de onde abrollan unha morea de ríos que fan camiño a través de fértiles vales e de frondosas fragas de bosques autóctonos.

INTRODUCIÓN GALEGO

Polo seu interese ecolóxico, moitos destes espazos naturais foron incluídos na Rede Natura 2000, algúns coa categoría de Reserva da Biosfera, como Terras do Miño; Os Ancares e Río Eo, Oscos e Terras de Burón, e outros coa de lugares de importancia comunitaria (LIC), entre os que se atopan Ancares-Courel; Cruzul-Agüeira, que inclúe os concellos de Becerreá e As Nogais; Fraga de Carballido; Parga-Ladra-Támoga ou Serra do Xistral. A este escenario natural hai que sumarlle un interesante patrimonio etnográfico, construído durante xeracións en torno á auga para aproveitar a súa forza, que moveu muíños, batáns, mazos… esparexidos aínda hoxe por toda a provincia. Unha boa maneira de descubrilos é realizar algunha das rutas de sendeirismo que existen, cuxo trazado transcorre en parte ou na súa totalidade polas marxes dos distintos cursos fluviais, como a Ruta Pardo de Cela (Alfoz), a Ruta da Auga (Guitiriz), a Ruta do Batán de Folgoso (Xermade), a Ruta do Río Lor (O Cebreiro-Quiroga), a Ruta dos Encoros pola Ribeira Sacra ou os sendeiros sinalizados na beira dos ríos Miño e Rato que circundan a capital da provincia. Durante os meses de verán, o silencio da natureza interrómpese coas romarías, coas feiras e coas festas, pagás, relixiosas ou gastronómicas, ou todo ao tempo, organizadas baixo unha carballeira preto do río, nos portos de mar

Por fin, a auga é a base da riqueza gastronómica lucense. O mar tráenos o polbo, o marisco, o bonito do norte, a pescada do pincho… e dos ríos chegan os salmóns, as troitas, as anguías… Ademais, a auga nutre a terra onde nacen as patacas, as verduras, os legumes, as uvas, as castañas… así como o pasto que alimenta as razas autóctonas coas que se obteñen carnes e produtos lácteos de primeira calidade cos que a hostelaría lucense reforza ano a ano o popular lema …E para comer, Lugo.

Pola súa tradición e orixinalidade son dignas de mención a Esbatuxada no río Miño, en Rábade; a Festa do Río Cabe, en Monforte de Lemos; A Maruxaina, que se celebra no areal do Torno, en San Cibrao; a Feira do Bonito de Burela ou a Romaría do Naseiro (Viveiro), que reúne milleiros de persoas na beira do río Landro.

Nesta nova edición propoñemos que vos deixedes inundar deste universo de sabores, das ondas do Cantábrico, dos ríos que atravesan a terra ou da auga dos mananciais curativos que, sen dúbida, atoparedes no voso camiño.

Su presencia se detecta ya en la propia toponimia, en la que se registran lugares como A Fonsagrada, A Mariña, A Pontenova, Portomarín, Ribadeo, Ribas de Sil, Ribeira de Piquín, Riotorto… Por ello, la Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Hostelería de Lugo (Apehl) ha decidido que en la edición de la guía …E para comer, Lugo de este año sea el agua la que nos conduzca hacia un nuevo viaje por tierras lucenses.

A Mariña Occidental

Recorreremos la provincia a través de cuatro capítulos dedicados al mar Cantábrico, al río Miño, a la Ribeira Sacra y, el último, a los Caminos de Santiago que atraviesan Lugo, en muchos tramos cerca del mar o a pie de río. Al mar Cantábrico y a los numerosos cursos fluviales que bañan estas tierras debemos agradecer un vasto patrimonio natural, que conforman majestuosos paisajes de costa (arenales, acantilados, cabos, islas…) y de montaña, de donde brotan un sinfín de ríos que se abren camino a través de fértiles valles y de frondosas fragas de bosques autóctonos. Por su interés ecológico, muchos de estos espacios naturales han sido incluidos en la Red Natura 2000, algunos con la categoría de Reserva de la Biosfe-

ra, como Terras do Miño; Os Ancares y Río Eo, Oscos y Terras de Burón, y otros con la de lugares de importancia comunitaria (LIC), entre los que se encuentran Ancares-Courel; Cruzul-Agüeira, que incluye los ayuntamientos de Becerreá y As Nogais; Fraga de Carballido; Parga-Ladra-Támoga o Serra do Xistral. A este escenario natural hay que sumar un interesante patrimonio etnográfico, construido durante generaciones en torno al agua para aprovechar su fuerza, que movió molinos, batanes, mazos… esparcidos aún hoy por toda la provincia. Una buena manera de descubrirlos es realizar alguna de las rutas de senderismo que existen, cuyo trazado transcurre en parte o en su totalidad por los márgenes de los distintos cursos fluviales, como la Ruta Pardo de Cela (Alfoz), la Ruta del Agua (Guitiriz), la Ruta do Batán de Folgoso (Xermade), la Ruta del Río Lor (O Cebreiro-Quiroga), la Ruta de los Embalses por la Ribeira Sacra o los senderos señalizados a orillas de los ríos Miño y Rato que circundan la capital de la provincia.

Durante los meses del verano, el silencio de la naturaleza se ve interrumpido por las romerías, las ferias o las fiestas, paganas, religiosas o gastronómicas, o todo a la vez, organizadas bajo un robledo cerca del río, en los puertos de mar o en la propia playa. Por su tradición y originalidad son dignas de mención la Esbatuxada en el río Miño, en Rábade; la Fiesta del Río Cabe, en Monforte de Lemos; A Maruxaina, que se celebra en el arenal de O Torno, en San Cibrao; la Feria del Bonito de Burela o la Romería do Naseiro (Viveiro), que reúne a miles de personas a las orillas del río Landro.

Por fin, el agua es la base de la riqueza gastronómica lucense. El mar nos trae el pulpo, el marisco, el bonito del norte, la merluza del pincho… y de los ríos llegan los salmones, las truchas, las anguilas… Además, el agua nutre la tierra donde nacen las patatas, las verduras, las legumbres, las uvas, las castañas… así como el pasto que alimenta las razas autóctonas con las que se obtienen carnes y productos lácteos de primera calidad con los que la hostelería lucense refuerza año a año el popular lema …E para comer, Lugo. En esta nueva edición proponemos que os dejéis inundar de este universo de sabores, de las olas del Cantábrico, de los ríos que atraviesan la tierra o del agua de los manantiales curativos que, sin duda, encontraréis en vuestro camino.

Red Natura 2000, some of them with the category of Reserve of the Biosphere, like for example Terras do Miño; Os Ancares and Río Eo, Oscos and Terras de Burón, and others with the category of places of communitarian importance, among them, Ancares-Courel; Cruzul-Agüeira, that includes Becerreá and As Nogais; Carballido forest; Parga-Ladra-Támoga rivers or Xistral mountains. To this natural scenery, we must add an interesting ethnographic heritage, built during generations around the water to take advantage of its strength, that moved mills, fulling mills, mallets… scattered still today all over the province. A good way of discovering them is to do some of the hiking routes that exist, whose transit time goes over in part or in its totality through the banks of the different river courses, such as the Route Pardo de Cela (Alfoz), the Route of the Water (Guitiriz), the Route of Batán de Folgoso (Xermade), the Route of the River Lor (O Cebreiro-Quiroga), the Route of the Reservoirs through Ribeira Sacra or tracks signposted to the banks of the Miño and Rato rivers that surround the capital of the province.

El sonido del Cantábrico En los buques que salen a faenar desde el puerto de Burela se practica la pesca con anzuelo, el denominado curricán o cacea, un arte de pesca con el que se lleva a cabo una pesquería tradicional y selectiva en la que, además de respetar el medio ambiente, se logra una mayor calidad en su carne. Los consumidores pueden identificar este pescado en el mercado a través de la etiqueta Bonito del Norte, creada para garantizar el producto.

La temporada comprende los meses de verano (incluso hasta octubre), periodo que se conoce con el nombre de “costera del bonito”, por ser la época del año en que estos animales se acercan a la costa. El bonito es un pescado muy estimado por sus grandes posibilidades en la cocina, tanto fresco como en conserva: con salsa de tomate, guisado, a la parrilla, cocido, en empanada, con ensaladas frías y templadas… además de ser el protagonista de algunos de los platos de pescado con más tradición gastronómica: el marmitako. Su parte más codiciada es la ventresca, que por su exquisita carne se puede cocinar simplemente a la plancha. Estamos ante un auténtico tesoro del mar, que posee un alto valor nutricional, rico en omega-3 y una buena fuente de proteínas, vitaminas y minerales. Una estupenda oportunidad para probarlo es acercarse al puerto de Burela el primer sábado de agosto y disfrutar de la gran feria que tiene lugar en su honor. Organizada por primera vez en 1983, se celebra desde hace más de veinte años. En 2012 llegó a su XXVIII edición y, como siempre, el puerto se abarrotó de vecinos y turistas procedentes de diversos puntos de Galicia y de España para degustar el bonito en sus múltiples preparaciones. 20

A finales del siglo XX el Ayuntamiento de Burela llevó a cabo la rehabilitación del barco bonitero Reina del Carmen para transformarlo en un museo de interpretación del mar, con el fin de recuperar su patrimonio marítimo y, al mismo tiempo, convertirlo en el símbolo del esfuerzo de los marineros.

Apacible murmullo o bramido cuando bate contra la costa, al Cantábrico se le puede oír en un sinfín de matices si nos asomamos a la Mariña costera, consolidada como uno de los puntos de interés turístico más solicitados de la comunidad gallega.

Desde su extremo este, en el municipio de Ribadeo, hasta el oeste, en el de O Vicedo, en el límite con la provincia de A Coruña, el paisaje es espectacular, cargado de fuertes contrastes que van desde los suaves promontorios de la rasa cantábrica hasta los afilados cantiles de punta Roncadoira, en Xove. En toda la línea de costa nos esperan playas de arena fina y blanca, bañadas por las cristalinas aguas cantábricas, cuyas mareas esculpen paisajes únicos e irrepetibles. El ejemplo más admirable de la poderosa influencia del mar son las playas de Augasantas y Carricelas, en las que la singular estructura arquitectónica de las rocas les ha otorgado el nombre turístico de la playa de As Catedrais. Sin embargo, no es el único: en ese mismo municipio, se encuentran, entre otras, las playas de Os Castros y As Illas, y le siguen Arealonga, As Pasadas o Reinante, en Barreiros; Llas y A Rapadoira, en Foz; Area y Covas, en Viveiro; Abrela, San Román, Xilloi y las preciosas calas de Caolín o Vidreiro, en O Vicedo… que, junto a cabos, islas, faros, penínsulas y acantilados perfilan el litoral mariñano y lo convierten en un lugar privilegiado.

El mar de A Mariña es el destino final de algunos de los ríos más importantes de la provincia: el Eo, que muere en la ría de Ribadeo; el Masma, que nutre el imponente valle que lleva su nombre para desembocar en la ría de Foz-Masma; el Ouro, que desemboca en Fazouro (Foz); el Landro, que forma la emblemática ría de Viveiro, o el Sor, cuyas aguas se vierten a la ría de O Barqueiro, delimitada por las puntas de O Embarcadoiro (O Vicedo) y A Estaca de Bares (Mañón, A Coruña). La bonanza del Cantábrico ha condicionado la vida de esta zona, en la que se instalan algunos de los puertos (pesqueros, deportivos e industriales) más destacados de la península, como son los de Ribadeo, Burela y Celeiro (este último en la ría de Viveiro), cuya actividad los sitúa como uno de los principales motores económicos del territorio. La excelencia de los frutos obtenidos sirve para elaborar platos exquisitos, que se pueden saborear en las mesas de una amplia oferta de restaurantes, en los que no faltan los surtidos de marisco, el pulpo, el bonito del norte o la merluza del pincho. The Cantabrian voice Calm rustling or howling when it beats upon the coast, the Cantabrian Sea can be heard in an endless number of aspects if we show our face to the coast of A Mariña, established as one of the most requested places of touristic interest of the Galician community. From its east extreme, in the municipality of Ribadeo, to the west, in O Vicedo, in the limit with the province of A Coruña, the landscape is spectacular, full of strong contrasts that go from the soft hills of the flat cantabrian to the sharp cliffs of Punta Roncadoira, in Xove. All along the coastline, fine and white beaches await us, covered with cantabrian transparent waters,

whose tides delimit unique and unrepeatable landscapes. The most admirable example of the powerful influence of the sea are the Augasantas and Carricelas beaches, where a peculiar architectural structure of the rocks gave the tourist name of As Catedrais beach. However, it is not the only one: in this same municipality, we can find, among others, Os Castros and As Illas beaches, as well as, Arealonga, As Pasadas or Reinante beaches in Barreiros; Llas or Rapadoira beaches in Foz; Area and Covas beaches in Viveiro; Abrela, San Román, Xilloi beaches and the beautiful coves of Caolín or Vidreiro, in O Vicedo… that together with capes, islands, lighthouses, peninsulas and cliffs outline the mariñan coastline and turn into a privileged place. The sea of A Mariña is the final destination of some of the most important rivers of the province: the Eo river, which gets to the sea inlet of Ribadeo; the Masma river, that nourishes the im-

pressive valley that takes its name to flow into in the sea inlet of Foz-Masma, the Ouro river that flows into in Fazouro (Foz), the Landro river that flows into the characteristic sea inlet of Viveiro, or the Sor river that flows into the sea inlet of O Barqueiro, delimited by the tops of O Embarcadoiro (O Vicedo) and A Estaca de Bares (Mañón, A Coruña). To this attractiveness of the sea, we must add the beauty of the pre-littoral, where the rivers carve along its course exuberant landscapes, as for example Souto da Retorta, in the Viveiro parish of Chavín, where there are amazing waterfalls such as Pozo da Ferida (among Xove and Viveiro) and Santo Estevo do Ermo in Barreiros. The cantabrian fair weather has conditioned this area’s life, where we can see some of the most prominent ports (fishing, marina and industrial ones) in the peninsula, such as the ones of Ribadeo, Burela and Celeiro (this last one in the sea inlet of Viveiro), whose activity places them as one of the main economic engines of the territory. The superior quality of these obtained products is used to elaborate exquisite dishes, which can be tasted in the tables of a wide range of restaurants, where a high selection of seafood is never missing, or the octopus, the tuna from the north or the hake style longline hooks. Some of these exquisites dishes are to pay tribute in mass gastronomic fete during the whole year, especially during the summer time, among others, the Tuna Fete in Burela or the Sea urchin Fete in Cervo, both of them are declared as tourist interest.

This territory has, besides, an ample historic-artistic heritage, a great part of which is linked to the marine world: the fort of Fazouro, in Foz, the ship museum Reina del Carmen, in Burela, the Provincial Museum of the Sea and the antique factories of salt, in San Cibrao (Cervo), the lighthouses of the cape of San Cibrao and the Pancha island of Ribadeo; the picturesque fishing village of Rinlo and the historic-artistic site that form the A Atalaia chapel, the ancient loading bay and the fort of San Damián, in Ribadeo, are some of the examples.

Nuestra memoria no olvida la lección de geografía en la que aprendimos que “el Miño nace en Fomiñá, provincia de Lugo”, aunque el lugar exacto de su origen sigue suscitando dudas. Hasta la laguna de Fomiñá, en A Pastoriza, se acercan muchos visitantes para asistir a su nacimiento. Sin embargo, según los expertos, ya ha recorrido seis kilómetros tras nacer en el Pedregal de Irimia, en el vecino municipio de Meira, por donde fluye subterráneamente hasta aflorar en Fomiñá. En cualquier caso, los dos lugares merecen una visita. Meira, el inicio En su curso alto, el Miño emprende su viaje por las comarcas de Meira, Terra Chá y Lugo. La primera de ellas se sitúa entre la Terra Chá y las sierras orientales, no muy lejos del litoral lucense. Su paisaje lo moldea el paso de numerosos cursos fluviales: junto al Miño y su afluente el Azúmara, otro gran río gallego, el Eo, con algunos de sus tributarios, como el Rodil o el Torto, dejan huella en esta tierra, inundándola de bellos espacios naturales de alto interés ecológico, en los que predominan fragas de bosques autóctonos, humedales, cascadas... que se pueden conocer a través de bonitos senderos, algunos de ellos señalizados. Este territorio es también arquitectura, que encabeza el monasterio de Santa María de Meira, de factura románica, al que le siguen otros edificios religiosos de interés artístico, como son los templos de San Pedro, en Riotorto, o los de San Xoán de Vaos y San Xurxo de Piquín, en Ribeira de Piquín. A este patrimonio se suma el legado etnográfico, representado, entre otros, por el conjunto de A Fraga de Ferreiravella, en Riotorto.

La Terra Chá, el viaje tranquilo El Miño atraviesa la comarca de Terra Chá a ritmo tranquilo, en un paisaje marcado por la horizontalidad del terreno. En este camino va recogiendo el agua de otros ríos y regatos, como el Támoga, el Ladra, el Parga… un espacio natural en el que se integra el Complejo Húmedo de la Terra Chá, la zona de humedales más importante de Galicia, de gran diversidad ecológica y refugio de numerosas aves, cuyos ejemplos más significativos son las lagunas de Riocaldo y Pozo do Ollo, en Begonte; la de O Rei, en Rábade; la de Caque, en Castro de Rei, y la de Cospeito, en el municipio homónimo. Nos detenemos un momento en este territorio, pues aquí el agua toma protagonismo no solo por sus ríos, sino también por sus manan40

tiales curativos, cuyo mayor exponente es Guitiriz, una villa termal donde abundan numerosas fuentes mineromedicinales, como las de Valdovín, Santo Domingo o Lagostelle, alrededor de las cuales se levantaron varios balnearios, como el de Pardiñas (hoy cerrado) y el de Guitiriz, consolidado actualmente como un complejo turístico de gran prestigio. También es muy popular la denominada charca de O Alligal, en el vecino ayuntamiento de Vilalba, una piscina de aguas termales acondicionada para el baño.

Además de su valor paisajístico, en esta comarca se emplazan algunos importantes referentes culturales de la provincia, como el conjunto arqueológico-museístico del Castro de Viladonga, uno de los yacimientos arqueológicos más sobresalientes de la comunidad gallega. En su inventario arquitectónico son igualmente destacables la iglesia de Santa María de Bretoña, en A Pastoriza; la torre de los Andrade, en Vilalba, o las iglesias de Santa María de Lagostelle y San Xoán de Lagostelle, en Guitiriz.

Lugo, el río que nos lleva En la comarca de Lugo, el Miño rompe la monotonía de su trayecto y se parte en “brazos” para dar lugar a espectaculares islas de río (insuas), como las de Trabanca o San Roque, en Outeiro de Rei, donde podremos cruzar su puente colgante, descansar en el área recreativa de Santa Isabel, contemplar el salto de O Piago o acercarnos a la parroquia de Gaioso, en cuya montaña se elevan As Penas de Rodas, símbolo de piedra de la Terra Chá, dos bloques graníticos circulares de gran tamaño, desde los que se obtiene una bonita panorámica de la planicie de esta tierra. Llegando a la capital lucense aún recoge agua de otros afluentes, como el Narla, el Mera y el Rato, con el que se junta al sur de la ciudad. A orillas de ambos cursos se ha construido un amplio paseo circular de más de diez kilómetros, que permite recorrer la urbe por su parte baja. A su paso existen áreas para descansar, hacer deporte, darse un baño en época estival, pasear en catamarán o, simplemente, dejarse llevar y descubrir la naturaleza a pocos minutos del núcleo urbano. En el transcurso de este trayecto, en la ri-

bera del Miño, muy cerca del puente romano, se ubica el balneario de la ciudad, en cuyas instalaciones se conservan los vestigios de las antiguas termas públicas romanas, declaradas Monumento Histórico-Artístico Nacional. Abandonamos la zona fluvial y nos internamos en su casco histórico, al que se accede por cualquiera de las diez puertas de la gran Muralla romana, el imponente símbolo de la ciudad. Lugo atesora un valiosísimo patrimonio histórico-artístico, que ocupa en una buena parte la herencia dejada por la presencia de los romanos en esta ciudad, cuyo subsuelo aún esconde gran parte de este legado. Muchos de los yacimientos descubiertos han sido rehabilitados y musealizados, sobre todo en los dos últimos siglos, y en la actualidad la ciudad cuenta con varios centros de interpretación abiertos al público, entre los que se encuentran la Domus del Mitreo, la Casa de los Mosaicos, el Centro de Interpretación de la Muralla, el Centro Arqueológico San Roque y la sala de exposiciones Porta Miñá. Junto a su pasado romano, Lugo guarda el recuerdo de periodos posteriores materializados en grandiosas edificaciones, cuyo máximo exponente es, sin duda, la catedral de Santa María, sita en la plaza homónima. Completan el inventario los templos de Santalla de Bóveda, San Domingos, San Froilán, Santiago a Nova y la iglesia y el convento de San Francisco, hoy transformado en museo provincial. La red museística lucense se amplió en 2012 con un innovador proyecto, el Museo Interactivo de la Historia de Lugo (MIHL). El núcleo histórico presume también de suntuosos edificios civiles como la casa consistorial, el palacio de San Marcos o el edificio del Círculo de las Artes.

Además de naturaleza y cultura, la ciudad de Lugo es sinónimo de ocio. El inicio del verano comienza con el popular Arde Lucus, en el que la ciudad revive el periodo romano con vistosos disfraces y recreaciones de costumbres de la época. En el mes de octubre tiene lugar la gran fiesta no solo lucense sino gallega, el San Froilán, con más de dos siglos de existencia.

El Miño se despide de la capital y emprende su viaje hacia el sur, camino de O Corgo. A este territorio pertenece Santo Estevo de Farnadeiros, parroquia donde se ubica el conjunto etnográfico de A Fervenza, a pie del río. En este mismo municipio tiene paso uno de los afluentes del “Padre” Miño por su margen izquierdo, el Chamoso, en cuyas orillas está la playa fluvial de Aboi.

El gran río se dirige después a Portomarín, parada imprescindible del Camino Francés y villa emblemática, cuya historia está condicionada por la construcción del embalse de Belesar en Chantada en los años 60, que anegó el pueblo originario y tuvo que ser trasladado al cercano monte del Cristo. En el nuevo emplazamiento se reconstruyeron algunos de los edificios más importantes, como la iglesia de San Nicolás, también llamada de San Xoán. Hoy en día en este embalse se pueden practicar deportes náuticos y pasear en catamarán o cruzar el puente que nos lleva hasta el limítrofe municipio de Paradela. Fuera del itinerario del Miño, algunos de sus afluentes bañan otros municipios de la comarca de Lugo, como el río Ferreira, que recibe su nombre del lugar de Ferreira de Pallares, en Guntín, donde desde época medieval se asentó el monasterio que lleva su nombre, o los ríos Parla y Narla, que riegan el municipio de Friol, tierra atravesada por el Camino Norte de Santiago.

However, according to experts, it has already gone over 6 kilometers after rising in the Pedregal de Irimia, in the nearby municipality of Meira, where it flows in a subterranean way until it appears in Fomiñá. In any case, both places are worth a visit. Meira, the start In its high course, the Miño sets out on a journey across the areas of Meira, Terra Chá and Lugo. Meira is located between the Terra Chá and the oriental mountain ranges, not far away from the coast of Lugo. This territory is also architecture, which can be noticed in the monastery of Santa María de Meira, with romantic style, followed by other religious buildings of artistic interest, such as, the temples of San Pedro, in Riotorto, or the ones of San Xoán de Vaos and San

Xurxo de Piquín, in Ribeira de Piquín. To this heritage, we must add the ethnographic legacy, represented, among others, by the site of A Fraga de Ferreiravella, in Riotorto. Terra Chá, the calm journey Miño River crosses the region of Terra Chá in a calm way, in a landscape characterized by the horizontality of the land. In this path, it joins with the water of other rivers and streams, such as, the Támoga, the Ladra, the Parga… a natural area where we can find the Wet Complex of the Terra Chá, the most important area of wetlands in Galicia, of great ecological diversity and refuge of numerous poultries, whose most relevant examples are the ponds of Riocaldo and Pozo do Ollo, in Begonte, or the one called O Rei, in Rábade, Caque Lake, in Castro de Rei, and the one in Cospeito, in the homonymous municipality. We stop a moment in this territory, since here the water is the centre of attention, not only for its rivers, but also for its curative spring water, whose great exponent is Guitiriz, a thermal villa where there are numerous spring miners medicinal, such as, the ones of Valdovín, Santo Domingo or Lagostelle, where several spas were founded, such as the Pardiñas one (today it is closed) and the one of Guitiriz, consolidated today as a touristic complex of great prestige. The so called pond of O Alligal is very popular too, in the nearby city council of Vilalba, a swimming pool fitted up for the bath. Apart from its landscape value, in this area, several important cultural referents of the province are located, such as, the archaeological-museum site of Viladonga Fort, one of the most outstanding 57

archaeological sites of the Galician community. In its archaeological inventory we must highlight the Santa María de Bretoña church, in a Pastoriza, the Andrade Tower, in Vilalba, or the Santa María de Lagostelle and San Xoán de Lagostelle churches in Guitiriz. Lugo, the river that takes us In the area of Lugo, the Miño breaks the monotony of its route and it is divided into “arms” to give room to spectacular river islands, such as the ones of Trabanca or San Roque, in Outeiro de Rei, where we can cross its hanging bridge, to rest in the recreational area of Santa Isabel, looking at the waterfall of O Piago or getting closer to the parish of Gaioso, in whose mountain, As Penas de Rodas are raised, a symbol of stone of the Terra Chá, two circular granite blocks of great size, where we can see a beautiful panoramic view of the plain of this land. Getting closer to the lucense capital, the Miño collects water from other affluents, such as the Narla, the Mera and the Rato, where it joins at the south of the city with. To the banks of both courses an ample circular walk has been built with more than 10 kilometers, which allows to go through the lower part of the city. There, we can find several areas to rest, practice sport, have a bath in the summer, to go for a walk in catamaran, or simply, to be carried along and discover the nature near the urban nucleus. In the course of this route, in the bank of the Miño, very near to the roman bridge, we can see the spa of the city, where the remains of the ancient roman public thermals are preserved, declared as Historic-Artistic National monument.

We abandon the river area and we advance towards its historic area, where you can accede by any of the ten doors of the great roman Wall, the impressive symbol of the city. Its calm streets, many of them are pedestrian, offer us numerous possibilities: go shopping or being participant of its excellent gastronomy, supported by some products of high quality: vegetables, Cantabrian seafood assortment, octopus, meat of autochthonous breed, honey, chestnuts, cheeses, bread and wines… ingredients with which exquisite dishes are elaborated, which we can taste through its ample variety of snacks (tapas) and menus and remember the slogan: ...And to eat out, Lugo that at its peak. Lugo possesses a valuable historic-artistic patrimony, which occupies in a great part the legacy left by the presence of the Romans in this city, whose underground still hides a great part of this legacy. Su parte más codiciada es la ventresca, que por su exquisita carne se puede cocinar simplemente a la plancha. Estamos ante un auténtico tesoro del mar, que posee un alto valor nutricional, rico en omega-3 y una buena fuente de proteínas, vitaminas y minerales. Una estupenda oportunidad para probarlo es acercarse al puerto de Burela el primer sábado de agosto y disfrutar de la gran feria que tiene lugar en su honor. Organizada por primera vez en 1983, se celebra desde hace más de veinte años. En 2012 llegó a su XXVIII edición y, como siempre, el puerto se abarrotó de vecinos y turistas procedentes de diversos puntos de Galicia y de España para degustar el bonito en sus múltiples preparaciones. 60

El agua se transforma en vino en este paraje sagrado, donde la proximidad entre los ríos Miño y Sil ha ido labrando a lo largo de los años uno de los paisajes más impresionantes de la comunidad gallega, en cuyas montañas se recoge la uva mencía, con la que se elaboran los prestigiosos caldos, identificables por su etiqueta DOP Ribeira Sacra. En los últimos kilómetros antes de desembocar en el Miño, el Sil sirve de frontera natural entre las provincias de Lugo y Ourense a lo largo de un profundo cañón y origina un paisaje excepcional bautizado con el nombre de Ribeira Sacra. Este territorio abarca el sur de Lugo y el norte de Ourense y en él se integran un total de 19 municipios, de los que 11 pertenecen a la zona lucense. En las alturas de estos majestuosos cañones podemos admirar la belleza del paisaje desde diversos miradores naturales que “cuelgan” sobre los ríos Miño y Sil, como el de Terra Branca en Chantada, O Cabo do Mundo en O Saviñao, o los de Cadeiras, Boimente y Os Chelos, en Sober. Igualmente se pueden contemplar las terrazas cubiertas de viñedos desde el agua, navegando a bordo de un catamarán por los embalses de Belesar y Os Peares, en el Miño, y los de San Pedro y Santo Estevo en el Sil. 61

Hablar de Ribeira Sacra es hablar de vino, elaborado con las uvas de los viñedos que se cultivan en los pronunciados bancales que bajan hasta el río. El escarpado terreno hace aquí la vendimia especialmente dura, pero el tesón de sus cultivadores ha logrado excepcionales resultados en los últimos años, pues sus caldos forman parte de las cinco denominaciones de origen vinícolas que existen en Galicia, con el nombre de Ribeira Sacra, cuya calidad ha sido avalada en diversos certámenes a nivel internacional. Estos vinos son un acompañante ideal para la cuidada gastronomía que también caracteriza esta tierra, en la que se aúna tradición y modernidad a través de la fusión de sus productos: carnes, pescados, pan, aceite, castañas, nueces... con los que se logran exquisitos platos que se pueden saborear en los variados establecimientos de la zona. Como en toda Galicia, en esta tierra también se les rinde tributo a las cosechas en las populares celebraciones que se organizan en los diferentes municipios. Entre ellas son dignas de mención las fiestas en honor al vino en Chantada, Amandi (Sober), Belesar (Chantada) o Pantón.

Al paisaje y al vino se une el gran valor arquitectónico de este lugar, una herencia medieval de los monjes que se asentaron aquí atraídos por su clima y su orografía. De este periodo la Ribeira Sacra atesora un magnífico legado románico, que se puede conocer a través de las diversas rutas organizadas. Entre la extensa nómina de edificios religiosos podremos visitar las iglesias de San Xoán da Cova, en Carballedo; Santa María de Pesqueiras y San Salvador de Asma, en Chantada; San Martiño da Cova, en O Saviñao; San Pedro de Bembibre, en Taboada, o Santa María de Proendos, en Sober, así como los monasterios de San Salvador de Ferreira de Pantón, en Pantón, y el de Santo Estevo de Ribas de Miño, en O Saviñao.

Además del legado románico, en el territorio hay catalogados un buen número de yacimientos arqueológicos (dólmenes, castros...), así como romanos, cuya representación más destacada es el túnel de Montefurado (Quiroga), excavado para desviar el curso del río Sil en busca de oro. La Ribeira Sacra posee, además, el encanto de la tradición, conservada en muchas de sus aldeas, hoy restauradas, como la de Gundivós (Sober), famosa por sus cerámicas; Bendilló (Quiroga), donde se todavía elabora aceite en los molinos de forma totalmente tradicional; o Vilachá (A Pobra do Brollón), donde se encuentra el conjunto aquitectónico conformado por antiguas bodegas.

Talking about Ribeira Sacra is talking about wine, elaborated with the grapes of the vineyards that are cultivated in the pronounced plots that go down to the river. The sheer land makes here the grape harvest exceptionally hard, but the persistence of its cultivators has achieved exceptional results in the latter years, so its consommés become part of the five wine certificate of origin that exist in Lugo, with the name of Ribeira Sacra, whose quality has been recognized in different competitions at international level. These wines go well with the careful gastronomy that also characterizes this land, where tradition and modernity are joined by the fusion of its products: meat, fish, oil, chestnuts, walnuts… with which exquisite dishes are achieved, which can be tasted in the varied establishments of the area. Like in the whole Galicia, in this land, the harvests also pay tribute in the popular celebrations that are organized in the different municipalities. Among them, it is worth mentioning the fete in honor of the wine in Chantada, Amandi (Sober), Belesar (Chantada) or Pantón. To the landscape and the wine, we have to add the great architectural value of this place, a medieval legacy of the monks that settled here after being attracted by its climate and its orography. Apart from the Romanesque legacy, in the territory, a good number of archaeological sites (dolmen, forts…) are catalogued, just like Romans, whose most outstanding symbol is the tunnel of Montefurado (Quiroga), which was dug to alter the course of the river Sil in search of gold. In addition, the Ribeira Sacra posses the charming of the tradition, preserved in many of its villages, today restored, like the one of Gundivós (Sober), famous for its pottery; Bendilló (Quiroga), where the oil is still elaborated in the mills in a traditional way; or Vilachá (A Pobra do Brollón), where the architectural ensemble is found, formed by ancient wineries. The river Cabe, at its passage through Monforte The river Cabe, affluent of the Sil, dips the second city of the province of Lugo, Monforte de Lemos. In the heart of the Ribeira Sacra of Lugo, the Old Bridge saves the river in the low part of the region, where there is a pleasant walk area. Monforte is also art and history, as it is proved in the beautiful monuments that are preserved in the city, among them, we can enhance the San Vicente do Pino ensemble, Nosa Señora da Antiga school, just like the Sacred Art Museum, Tor Palace or the Railway Museum, in memory of the ancient splendor of this city as railway junction.

Será difícil que en cualquiera de los caminos que decida recorrer no encuentre una fuente donde saciar su sed, un río para relajarse durante el trayecto, o una cascada, al pie de la cual comer y hacer un descanso, seguramente merecido. La belleza de estos paisajes se puede disfrutar organizando un viaje por alguna de las rutas, oficiales o no oficiales, que propone la Asociación de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de la Provincia de Lugo. La importancia que Lugo tuvo y sigue teniendo dentro del mundo jacobeo lo demuestra el hecho de ser una de las provincias españolas por las que más rutas jacobeas pasan: tres oficiales y otras tres, que, sin serlo, están siendo recorridas cada año por más peregrinos. En total, nuestra provincia supera los 800 kilómetros de Caminos de Santiago.

Pambre (Palas de Rei)

Es el más conocido y el que más afluencia de peregrinos tiene. Entra en nuestra provincia por la comarca de Os Ancares, concretamente por la aldea de O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro), pasa por Triacastela y aquí se puede escoger entre dos rutas: por San Xil o por Samos, que se unen otra vez a la entrada de Sarria, continuando por Paradela, Portomarín, Monterroso y Palas de Rei.

Camino Primitivo Fue el primer Camino conocido, cuando en el siglo IX Alfonso II el Casto se desplazó de Oviedo a Santiago a visitar la tumba del Apóstol Santiago. De Asturias entra en Galicia por el alto de O Acebo; en A Fonsagrada el Camino presenta dos opciones: por A Pobra de Burón o por O Padrón. Las dos rutas se unen en el Hospital de Montouto - O Cádavo - Castroverde - Lugo - Guntín - Friol - Palas de Rei; luego continúa hasta unirse con el Camino Francés en Melide.

RUTAS NO OFICIALES A estas rutas, sobradamente conocidas, se unen ahora otras que están siendo recorridas cada año por más peregrinos en su intención de llegar a la ciudad santa.

Camino Sur o de Invierno Cruza el sur de la provincia, a la que entra por Montefurado, Quiroga, Ribas de Sil y A Pobra do Brollón, donde la ruta se bifurcaba por O Incio y Samos, o bien continuaba a Monforte de Lemos. Aquí se le une otro camino que viene de Castro Caldelas entrando por Ponte Paradela - Doade y cruza Sober hasta Monforte de Lemos. La ruta continúa por Pantón - O Saviñao y abandona Lugo por Chantada, para unirse en A Laxe - Lalín con el Camino Mozárabe.

Camino del Mar Es el más reciente en ponerse en valor. Desde Ribadeo y bordeando toda A Mariña cruza Barreiros - Foz - Burela - Cervo - Xove - Viveiro y sale por O Vicedo, en dirección Ortigueira y Ferrol, donde enlaza con el Camino Inglés. Esta ruta está en fase de señalización, pero ya son bastantes los peregrinos que se interesan y hacen este recorrido.

The Primitive Way The importance that Lugo had and still has within the Jubilee world can be proved by the fact of being one of the Spanish provinces by which more Jacobean routes cross: three official routes and other three non-official ones are being gone across by more pilgrims every year. In total, our province exceeds the 800 kilometers of Paths of Santiago.

OFFICIAL ROUTES The French Way It is the most known and the one with more influx of pilgrims has. It penetrates in our province through O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro), it goes through Triacastela and here you can choose between two routes: either through San Xil or through Samos, which are joined again at the entrance of Sarria, continuing through Paradela, Portomarín, Monterroso and Palas de Rei.

It was the first known way, when in the IX century, Alfonso II el Casto, moved from Oviedo to Santiago to visit Saint James apostle’s tomb. The South Way or of The Winter It crosses the south of the province, to which it enters through Montefurado, Quiroga, Ribas de Sil and A Pobra do Brollón, where the route is branched off through O Incio and Samos, either it continued to Monforte de Lemos.
