INTRODUCCIÓN ¿Estás valorando hacer el Camino de Santiago? ¿Quieres emprenderlo por etapas? ¿Te gustaría conocer otros lugares fuera de la ruta y disfrutar de su gastronomía?

Pues en esta nueva edición de la guía puedes acompañarme a realizar varias etapas de cuatro de las rutas jacobeas oficiales y, además, te presento otras rutas alternativas que nos permiten conocer más la provincia de Lugo.

El Camino de Santiago es un espacio común, cargado de memoria y surcado por trayectos que sirven para la comunicación y el intercambio. A lo largo de estos recorridos conoceremos sitios espectaculares, diferentes tradiciones y la gastronomía.

Hacer alguno de los caminos nos permite romper las rutinas diarias, nos recompensa y, además, transforma a aquellos que lo experimentamos al menos una vez en la vida.

En esta guía puedes escoger qué opción te gusta más para conocer Lugo mientras realizas una de las rutas del Camino de Santiago a su paso por esta provincia.

Empezamos la guía haciendo el Camino Primitivo, itinerario que une Oviedo y Santiago de Compostela, dos ciudades vinculadas originalmente por la voluntad del rey Alfonso II el Casto, considerado como el pri-

mer peregrino tras viajar a comienzos del siglo IX desde la sede de su corte hasta el lugar exacto donde presuntamente se habían encontrado los restos del Apóstol Santiago.

Seguimos por el Camino Francés, que nació como puerta de entrada para aquellos peregrinos procedentes de Francia y de otros países del norte de Europa. El siguiente camino que recorremos es el del Norte, el cual alcanzó relevancia en la Baja Edad Media, cuando las peregrinaciones marítimas estaban en su apogeo y en Oviedo comenzó a celebrarse el Jubileo de la Santa Cruz. Finalizamos las rutas jacobeas oficiales con el Camino de Invierno, que debe su nombre a que nació y fue particularmente transitado durante esta estación, cuando el ascenso y posterior descenso a sitios como O Cebreiro impedían el paso de los peregrinos por la dureza del clima. También nos adentramos en otras zonas de Lugo, realizando dos caminos no oficiales y dos rutas alternativas, para que disfrutes de paisajes y espacios de la naturaleza que son espectaculares.

O Camiño de Santiago é un espazo común, cargado de memoria e asucado por traxectos que serven para a comunicación e o intercambio. Ao longo destes recorridos coñeceremos sitios espectaculares, diferentes tradicións e a gastronomía. Facer algún dos camiños permítenos romper as rutinas diarias, recompénsanos e, ademais, transforma aqueles que o experimentamos polo menos unha vez na vida. Nesta guía podes escoller que opción che gusta máis para coñecer Lugo mentres realizas unha das rutas do Camiño de Santiago ao seu paso por esta provincia.

Empezamos a guía facendo o Camiño Primitivo, itinerario que une Oviedo e Santiago de Compostela, dúas cidades vinculadas orixinalmente pola vontade do rei Alfonso II o Casto, considerado como o primeiro

O seguinte camiño que percorremos é o do Norte, o cal alcanzou relevancia na Baixa Idade Media, cando as peregrinacións marítimas estaban no seu apoxeo e en Oviedo comezou a celebrarse o Xubileu da Santa Cruz. Finalizamos as rutas xacobeas oficiais co Camiño de Inverno, que debe o seu nome a que naceu e foi particularmente transitado durante esta estación, cando o ascenso e posterior descenso a sitios como O Cebreiro impedían o paso dos peregrinos pola dureza do clima. Tamén nos metemos noutras zonas de Lugo, realizando dous camiños non oficiais e dúas rutas alternativas, para que goces de paisaxes e espazos da natureza que son espectaculares.

INTRODUCTION Are you thinking about doing the Way of St. James? Do you want to do it in stages? Would you like to know places outside of the traditional routes and enjoy their gastronomy?

You can join me in this new edition of the guide, so we can do various stages of four of the official pilgrimage routes. I will also introduce you to other alternative routes so we can get to know more about the province of Lugo.

The Way of St. James is a common space, full of memory and furrowed by routes that facilitate communication and exchange. Along these routes we will get to know spectacular places, different traditions and gastronomy. Doing one of these routes will give us the chance to take a break from our daily routines, reward us and, moreover, transform those of us who experience it at least once in our lives. In this guide you can choose your favourite option to get to know Lugo while doing one of the routes of the Way of St. James as it passes through this province.

We start the guide doing the Primitive Way, an itinerary that links Oviedo and Santiago de Compostela, two cities originally linked by the will of King Alfonso II el Casto, who is considered the first pilgrim ever after travelling in the early 9th century from the seat of his court to the exact place where the remains of the Apostle James had allegedly been found. We continue along the French Way, which was born as a gateway for pilgrims coming from France and other northern European countries. The next route we follow is the Northern route, which became important in the late Middle Ages when maritime pilgrimages were at their peak, and the Jubilee of the Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) began to be celebrated in Oviedo. We conclude

the official Jacobean routes with the Winter Way, which owes its name to the fact that it was born and was particularly busy during the winter, when the ascent and subsequent descent to places such as O Cebreiro prevented pilgrims from passing through. We will also venture into other areas of Lugo, doing two unofficial ways and two alternative routes, so you can enjoy spectacular landscapes.

CAMINO PRIMITIVO Es el camino catalogado como más antiguo y debe su origen a la peregrinación del rey Alfonso II de Asturias en el siglo IX. El Camino Primitivo es la primera ruta de la que se conservan referencias y de ahí debe su nombre. La ruta se inicia en Oviedo y transcurre por 321 kilómetros hasta llegar a la capital gallega.

El Camino Primitivo entra por Lugo en el territorio de A Fonsagrada, en concreto en el alto de O Acevo. En este trayecto podemos disfrutar de paisajes de montaña e impresionantes cascadas, como la de Vilagocende, además de patrimonio religioso y tradiciones.

Una parada obligatoria es la iglesia parroquial de A Fonsagrada, en cuyo interior resaltan sus retablos de gran valor. Así mismo, tras el ábside de la iglesia de Santa Marta se encuentra la Fons Sacrata (fuente sagrada), vinculada a leyendas como que la Virgen se le apareció a una peregrina que llegó cansada y enferma a la villa y a la que le mandó beber agua de la fuente, tras lo cual la mujer se curó.

Desde A Fonsagrada se nos presentan dos rutas para escoger:

Por A Pobra de Burón Es un recorrido para aquellos que prefieran transcurrir por montes silenciosos y solitarios, sin olvidar la historicidad de una vía que atraviesa la que fue la capital de Terras de Burón. Esta ruta

continúa hasta llegar al Hospital de Montouto.

Desde aquí, también podemos alejarnos para visitar Ribeira de Piquín, un lugar ideal para la tranquilidad y el sosiego, situado en la ribera del río

Eo, con unos paisajes incomparables y con una gastronomía sencilla y popular.

Por O Padrón Esta opción transcurre por los lugares fonsagradinos de Vilardongo y Pedrafitelas, hasta el Hospital de Montouto, donde se junta con la otra ruta. Este recinto data del siglo XIV y permaneció en activo hasta el XX. El camino sigue por Paradavella, A Degolada, A Lastra y A Fontaneira hasta llegar a la capital del municipio de Baleira, O Cádavo. Hasta este punto accedemos atra-

vesando el campo de A Matanza, que da paso a la meseta donde la leyenda ubica el sangriento combate librado entre el ejército de Alfonso II y los musulmanes.

¿Qué más visitar?

Antes de iniciar la primera etapa gallega, podemos acercarnos hasta Negueira de Muñiz, donde nos perderemos con sus vistas espectaculares al embalse del río Navia o en las viñas ancestrales que atesoran este municipio.

Ponemos rumbo a la siguiente etapa desde O Cádavo y dejamos atrás el casco urbano para llegar a A Pradeda, lugar de la parroquia de San Pedro de Esperela, desde donde continuaremos para subir al Alto da Vaqueriza.

Así llegamos hasta el municipio de Castroverde y transitamos por la parroquia de Vilabade, para conocer la iglesia gótica consagrada a Santa María y declarada Monumento Nacional en 1979.

Avanzamos por el Camino Primitivo y atravesamos el río Chamoso, afluente del Miño. Seguimos por la parroquia Souto de Torres y cruzamos el arroyo de Angueiro. Al pasar por Soutomerille paramos en la iglesia de San Salvador, joya del prerrománico, restaurada durante el barroco.

A continuación, entramos en Lugo por Gondar, Bascuas y Castelo, luego accedemos a la ciudad por el barrio de A Chanca, con su viaducto de 29 metros de altura. Pasando por las escaleras de Fontiñas y el Carril das Flores, llegamos a la plaza del Camino Primitivo y desembocamos en la Ronda da Muralla.

Esta ciudad guarda unos lugares que son de obligada visita. Lo primero es pasear por la Muralla Romana de Lugo, el monumento más desta-

cado, sin lugar a dudas. Se trata de una construcción de dos milenios de vida, con un recorrido de casi dos kilómetros que envuelve todo el centro histórico. La Catedral, construida en el siglo XII en estilo romántico sobre un templo anterior, es otro punto importante para conocer. En la parte trasera se encuentra una de las plazas más emblemáticas, la de Santa María, donde hallamos restos de una piscina romana del siglo IV.

También podemos atravesar la calle Doutor Castro, para conocer los restos de una domus romana del siglo II. De esta vivienda destacan los mosaicos del suelo, que representan motivos geométricos y le dan el nombre de Casa dos Mosaicos. En el corazón de la ciudad, también hay que caminar por la Plaza Mayor, una zona amplia y arbolada que guarda algunos de los edificios más vistosos y elegantes del casco viejo. Otra visita puede ser a las termas romanas, unos restos del antiguo balneario romano situado a orillas del río Miño, cerca del antiguo puente romano.

Queremos conocer más…

Para tomarnos un respiro del Camino vamos a visitar uno de los pueblos más cercanos a la capital de la provincia: O Corgo.Es la cuna de la vaca rubia gallega y dispone de un área recreativa, con una zona habilitada para el tiempo de ocio, con merenderos y parques infantiles, así como una fuente y estanque, además de unos aseos públicos.

Para salir del centro de la ciudad podemos hacerlo por la puerta del Carmen, la más antigua de la Muralla, la puerta Miñá o la de Santiago.

Seguiremos por la calzada romana hasta cruzar el río Miño a través del puente romano (siglo I) para despedirnos por el barrio de San Lázaro.

El itinerario atraviesa, entre otros lugares, O Veral, San Xoán do Alto, Seoane y O Burgo, donde merece la pena desviarse para conocer el santuario de Santalla de Bóveda (siglo III) y despedir así el municipio de Lugo. Posteriormente llegamos a San Román da Retorta (Guntín), donde podemos escoger dos itinerarios para salir de la provincia lucense. Podemos hacerlo por el lugar de Seixalvos, para continuar por Xende (Palas

de Rei), O Paraño (Friol) y luego volver a Palas de Rei por Senande, A Ponte Ferreira, Augas Santas, Merlán, Seixas, Casamiño y O Hospital das Seixas, donde cambiaríamos de provincia para penetrar en tierras coruñesas y seguir ya hasta Santiago de Compostela. La otra opción es seguir desde San Román hasta o Burgo do Negral y O Pacio (ambos lugares de Friol) para unirse de nuevo al Camino oficial, por A Ponte Ferreira.

¿Sabías que…

… la raza bovina rubia gallega es la más característica de Galicia? Se trata de una raza autóctona adaptada a la geografía gallega, por lo que es común encontrarnos con estos animales a lo largo del Camino. Es de carácter dócil y manso, además se caracteriza por ser muy rústica. Hoy en día, las explotaciones que trabajan con ellos se dedican a la producción de carnes de excelente calidad, principalmente de ternera, que cuenta con el sello de calidad IGP.

THE PRIMITIVE WAY It is the oldest classified route and owes its origin to the pilgrimage of King Alfonso II of Asturias in the 9th century. The Primitive Way is the first route of which references preserved, hence its name. The route starts in Oviedo and runs 321 kilometres to the Galician capital.

With your backpack ready, let’s discover this route as it passes through Lugo, from A Fonsagrada to Palas de Rei. Up for it?

A FONSAGRADA – O CÁDAVO The Primitive Way enters through Lugo in the territory of A Fonsagrada, specifically in the Alto de O Acevo. On this route we can enjoy mountain landscapes and impressive waterfalls, such as Vilagocende, as well as religious heritage and traditions.

An must stop is the parish church of A Fonsagrada, whose interior boasts altarpieces of great value. Likewise, behind the apse of the church of Santa Marta is the Fons Sacrata (sacred fountain), linked to legends such as that the Virgin appeared to a female

pilgrim who arrived tired and ill in the village, and who was told to drink water from the fountain, after which the woman was cured.

From A Fonsagrada there are two routes to choose from: Through A Pobra de Burón This is a route for those who prefer to walk through silent and solitary mountains, without forgetting the historicity of a route that crosses what was once the capital of Terra de Burón. This route goes all the way to the Hospital de Montouto.

From here, we can also take a detour to visit Ribeira de Piquín, an ideal place for peace and quiet, located on the banks of the river Eo, with incomparable landscapes and simple and popular gastronomy.

Through O Padrón This option runs through the Fonsagradinos places of Vilardongo and Pedrafitelas, to the Hospital de Montouto, where it joins the other route. This enclosure dates from the 14th century and remained active until the 20th century.

The route continues through Paradavella, A Degolada, A Lastra and A Fontaneira until it reaches the capital of the municipality of Baleira, O Cádavo. We reach this point by crossing A Matanza mountain, a plateau where according to legend, took place the bloody battle between the army of Alfonso II and the Muslims.

What else to visit?

Before starting the first Galician stage, we can visit Negueira de Muñiz, to get lost in the spectacular views of the Navia river reservoir and the ancestral vineyards of this municipality.

O CÁDAVO – LUGO We set our way to the next stage from O Cádavo and leave the town centre behind us to reach A Pradeda a place in the parish of San Pedro de Esperela,from where we continue to climb the Alto da Vaqueriza.

We then reach the municipality of Castroverde and pass through the parish of Vilabade, to see the Gothic church consecrated to Santa María and declared a National Monument in 1979.

We continue along the Primitive Way and cross the river Chamoso, a tributary of the Miño.

We continue through the parish of Souto de Torres and cross the stream of Angueiro. Passing through Soutomerille we stop at the church of San Salvador, a jewel of Perromanesque architecture, restored during the Baroque period.

We then enter the municipality of Lugo via Gondar, Bascuas and Castelo, then enter the city via the A Chanca neighbourhood, with its 29-metre high viaduct. Passing by the Fontiñas stairs and the Carril das Flores, we reach the Plaza del Camino Primitivo square and come out onto the Ronda da Muralla ring road.

This city has some places that are a must-see. The first thing to do is to walk along the Roman Wall of Lugo, without any doubt the most outstanding monument. It is a two-millennia-old construction, which stretches for almost two kilometres around the entire historic centre. The cathedral, built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style

on top of an earlier temple, is another important place to visit.

At the back is one of the most beautiful squares, the Plaza de Santa María, where we can find the remains of a Roman swimming pool from the 4th century.

We can also cross Doutor Castro street to see the remains of a Roman domus from the 2nd century. Of particular note in this house are the mosaics on the floor, which represent geometric motifs and give it the name of Casa dos Mosaicos (House of Mosaics). In the heart of the city, you should also walk around the Plaza Mayor, a large, tree-lined area that contains some of the most attractive and elegant buildings in the old town. Another visit worth considering is the Roman baths, the remains of an ancient Roman spa located on the banks of the river Minho, near the old Roman bridge.

To take a break from the Camino we are going to visit one of the villages closest to the capital of the province: O Corgo. It has a recreational area, with an area set aside for leisure time, with

picnic areas and children’s playgrounds, as well as a fountain and pond, and public toilets.

And for lunch... a loaf of bread from Lugo, what a delicacy!

LUGO – SAN ROMÁN DA RETORTA To leave the city we can do so through the Miñá or Carmen Gate, the oldest of the city walls, or through the Santiago Gate.

We will continue along the Roman road until we cross the river Miño over the 1st century bridge to say goodbye in the San Lázaro neighbourhood.

The itinerary crosses, among other places, O Veral, San Xoán do Alto, Seoane and O Burgo, where it is worth taking a detour to visit the enigmatic Santalla de Bóveda (the IIITH). We then arrive at San Román da Retorta (Guntín), where we can choose two itineraries to leave the province of Lugo. We can do it through Seixalvos, to continue through Xende (Palas de Rei), O Paraño (Friol) and then return to Palas de Rei through Senande, A Ponte Ferreira, Augas Santas, Merlán, Seixas, Casamiño and O

Hospital das Seixas, where we change province into A Coruña and continue on to Santiago de Compostela. The other option is to continue from San Román to O Burgo do Negral and O Pacio to rejoin the official Way, via A Ponte Ferreira.

Did you know…? ... the rubia gallega breed of cattle is the most characteristic of Galicia? It is an autochthonous breed adapted to the Galician geography, which is why it is common to find these animals along the Camino. It is docile and tame. It is also characterised by being very rustic. Con el abrigo que ofrece la vegetación de la montaña, empezamos este Camino por tierras gallegas desde O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro). Antes de iniciar la caminata, vamos a visitar la iglesia prerrománica de Santa María de O Cebreiro a Real, la más antigua de la ruta jacobea conservada en su integridad. También podemos conocer su Conjunto Etnográfico donde, con una superficie aproximada de 300 metros cuadrados y conformado por un grupo de pallozas, se recrea la vida de la montaña lucense.

A 1.300 metros de altitud, desde el alto de O Poio, empezamos la bajada hasta salir de este municipio por Fonfría. Ya entramos en el municipio de Triacastela, donde es de obligada visita la iglesia de Santiago, un recinto que fusiona una parte de estilo barroco con un ábside de estilo romano. En esta villa también se encuentra un antiguo hospital de peregrinos, que en la actualidad funciona como vivienda. También nos podemos adentrar en la cueva de Eirós, donde se descubrieron los primeros vestigios de arte rupestre del noroeste peninsular.

¿Conoces los quesos típicos de esta zona?

En este camino pasamos por diferentes municipios donde resuenan sus quesos. Uno de ellos es el queso de O Cebreiro, peculiar por su sabor y su forma de hongo. Es un queso fresco de pasta blanca, blanda y granulosa, elaborado con leche de vaca, que proviene de las razas rubia gallega, pardo alpina y frisona, criadas en la zona. Se produce en trece municipios de la comarca oriental de Lugo.

Aún no hemos llegado, pero seguro que te suena la Denominación de Origen Arzúa-Ulloa. Son quesos elaborados con leche de vaca, natural y entera, cruda o pasteurizada, procedente de los ayuntamientos de las comarcas de Arzúa, Melide, A Ulloa y Chantada, además de otros limítrofes.

Para realizar la siguiente etapa podemos escoger entre dos rutas: Por San Xil Esta variante nos permite disfrutar de unos paisajes de bosque autóctonos. Nos dirigimos hasta A Balsa, donde vemos la Fonte dos Lameiros y llegamos a la aldea de Montán (Samos). Avanzamos por las sendas de este municipio y ya pasamos a Sarria, donde peregrinamos por Furela y Pintín.

Continuamos por el lugar de Aguiada y ya nos adentramos en el casco urbano de Sarria, la localidad con mayor número de albergues ya que es el lugar elegido por muchos peregrinos para iniciar su Camino.

Por Samos Esta es la opción más larga y acompaña el transcurso del río Sarria, también conocido como Oribio. Salimos de Triacastela, caminamos por San Martiño do Real, en Samos, y ya nos sumergimos en el núcleo de este municipio, donde deberemos visitar el Real Monasterio de San Julián, una abadía benedictina fundada en el siglo VI. Destaca por ser el monasterio habitado más antiguo de España. Fue fundado por Martín de Braga y con la reconquista cristiana empezó su período de mayor esplendor, tras ser el refugio de Alfonso II el Casto.

Cuenta con una impresionante iglesia que resalta por su portada barroca, dividida en dos cuerpos y tres calles. Si queremos disfrutar de la naturaleza que rodea Samos, nada mejor que seguir la Ruta Fluvial, de apenas 3 kilómetros de longitud, que nace junto al molino de Bizarro y finaliza en el puente del Bao, siguiendo el curso del río Sarria.

Luego enlazamos con Aguiada y seguimos la misma ruta que por la variante de San Xil.

Ambas rutas llegan hasta Sarria, donde finalizaremos esta etapa. Aquí veremos la torre de la Fortaleza, los restos ya derruidos de un castillo del siglo XV. Otro punto a destacar es el monasterio de A Magdalena, uno de los edificios más emblemáticos de la localidad, que destaca por su iglesia. Así mismo, si queremos disfrutar de la naturaleza de este municipio podremos hacerlo en el conjunto recreativo de O Chanto.

Al salir del núcleo de Sarria peregrinamos por Lavandeira, Casais, A Brea, Morgade y ya nos adentramos en la primera parroquia del municipio de Paradela, Ferreiros, donde nos encontramos con la iglesia de Santa María.

Seguimos por Mirallos, A Pena y Rozas. Descendemos hasta Vilachá, la última aldea de este ayuntamiento, y ya llegamos hasta Portomarín.

El descenso nos acerca hasta el río Miño, que nos deja disfrutar del espectacular embalse de Belesar. La entrada al pueblo de Portomarín se hace por uno de los arcos del viejo puente romano, reconstruido para asentar una escalinata y colocar la capilla de A Virxe das Neves, que era un recinto del antiguo hospital, y también tenemos que conocer la iglesia de San Nicolás. No podemos salir de este municipio sin probar el aguardiente, que cuenta con su propia fiesta gastronómica para hacer honor a esta bebida elaborada mediante alquitaras, el método de destilación más antiguo.

Arrancamos la última etapa por la provincia de Lugo del Camino Francés. Salimos del núcleo de Portomarín y cruzamos por San Mamede y Velade. Seguimos por Gonzar y Castromaior, donde nos encontramos con una iglesia románica de finales del siglo XII y un castro prerromano. Avanzamos por Hospital da Cruz, Ventas de Narón y llegamos a A Ulloa. El primer municipio de esta comarca es Monterroso, que destaca por su Feira de Santos del 1 de noviembre, una de las más concurridas de Galicia, datada en la Edad Media. El camino continúa pasando por diferentes aldeas, entre las que llama la atención un albergue con establos para caballos, entre Portos y Lestedo.

Seguimos por Palas de Rei, por los lugares de Os Valos, A Brea y O Rosario, donde los peregrinos rezaban un rosario ante las vistas del Monte Sacro.

Ya llegamos al casco urbano de Palas de Rei por la calle de O Cruceiro y visitamos la iglesia de San Tirso. Una de las paradas obligatorias es el castillo de Pambre, situado en la parroquia de Pambre y considerado uno de los mejores ejemplos de la arquitectura militar medieval en Galicia, o el Monasterio de Vilar de Donas. También transitamos por los torrentes del Mácara, un tramo del río Ulla formado por rápidos, cascadas y pozas, desde donde nos podemos desviar para llevarán a visitar el municipio limítrofe de Antas de Ulla, donde también podremos gozar de sus aguas sulfurosas en el lugar de Fádregas, parroquia de Santa Mariña de Amarante.

THE FRENCH WAY This is one of the historical routes of pilgrimage to the Galician capital. After the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle in the 9th century and the beginning of the Camino de Santiago, the French Way was the most used itinerary by pilgrims from Europe. Its fame was unstoppable after its appearance in the Codex Calixtinus (12th century). The starting point of this route is San Juan de Pie de Port and it covers 930 km.

At an altitude of 1,300 metres, from the top of O Poio, we begin the descent to leave this municipality via Fonfría. We have entered the municipality of Triacastela, where a visit to the church of Santiago is a must, an enclosure that combines Baroque with Romanesque styles. You will also find an old pilgrims’ hospital in this town, which is currently used as a home. We can also visit the cave of Eirós, where the first remains of cave art in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula were discovered.

O CEBREIRO – TRIACASTELA Sheltered by the mountain vegetation, we start the Way through Galician lands from O Cebreiro (Pedrafita do Cebreiro). On this route we walk through several municipalities with well-known cheeses. One of them is the cheese of O Cebreiro, with its peculiar flavour and mushroom shape. It is a fresh, white, soft, granular cheese made from cow’s milk from the Galician Blonde, Brown Alpine and Friesian breeds, which are reared in the area. It is produced in thirteen municipalities in the eastern region of Lugo.

TRIACASTELA - SARRIA For the next stage we can choose between two routes: Through San Xil Through this route we will enjoy the native forest landscapes.

Heading towards A Balsa (Triacastela), we can see the Fonte dos Lameiros and reach the village of Montán (Samos). We continue along the paths of this municipality, walk through Furela and enter the municipality of Sarria through the village of Pintín.

We continue through Aguiada, in the municipality of Sarria. This town has a large number of hostels, as it is the place chosen by many pilgrims to start their walk.

Through Samos This is the longest option and follows the course of the river Sarria, also known as Oribio.

We pass through San Martiño do Real, with its Romanesque church. From here, we walk to Samos, where we should visit the Royal Monastery of San Julián, a Benedictine abbey founded in the 6th century. It is the oldest

inhabited monastery in Spain. It was founded by Martín de Braga and, with the Christian reconquest, it began its period of greatest splendour, after being the refuge of Alfonso II El Casto. It has an impressive church that stands out for its Baroque façade, divided into two sections and three rows. If you want to enjoy the nature that surrounds Samos, there is nothing better than following the River Route, which is barely three kilometres long. It starts next to the Bizarro mill and ends at the Bao bridge, following the course of the river Sarria.

We then link up with Aguiada and follow the same route as the San Xil variant.

Both routes reach Sarria, where we finish this stage. Here we will see the Torre da Fortaleza, the ruined remains of a 15th century castle. Another highlight is the monastery of A Magadalena, one of the most emblematic buildings in town, which stands out for its church. We can visit the recreational area of O Chanto if we want to enjoy the nature of this municipality.

If we spend a day in Sarria, we can go to the municipality of O Incio. We can walk around the Vilasouto reservoir, with its spectacular scenic beauty. We will also visit the monumental complex of O Hospital, which includes the Romanesque church of San Pedro Fiz.

SARRIA - PORTOMARÍN On leaving Sarria we make our make our way through Barbadelo, where we visit the church of Santiago. The route continues through Lavandeira, A Brea, Morgade and we enter the first parish of the municipality of Paradela, Ferreiros, where we find the church of Santa María.

We continue through Mirallos, A Pena and Rozas. We descend to Vilachá, the last village of this municipality and then we reach Portomarín.

PORTOMARÍN- PALAS DE REI This is the last stage of the French Way in the province of Lugo. We leave the town of Portomarín and cross San Mamede and Velade. We continue through Gonzar and Castromaior, where we find a Romanesque church from the end of the 12th century and a pre-Roman castro. We continue through Hospital da Cruz, Ventas de Narón and we arrive at A Ulloa. The first municipality in this region is Monterroso, which stands out for its Feira de Santos on the 1st of November, one of the most popular in Galicia, dating back to the Middle Ages.

The route continues passing through different villages, among which a hostel with stables for horses stands out, between Portos and Lestedo.

We continue through Os Valos, A Brea and O Rosario, a place where pilgrims used to pray a rosary in front of the views of Monte Sacro. We reach Palas de Rei via O Cruceiro street and visit the church of San Tirso. One of the obligatory stops is the castle of Pambre, located in the parish of Pambre and considered one of the best examples of medieval military architecture in Galicia, or the monastery of Vilar de Donas. We will also travel along the Mácara torrents, a stretch of the river Ulla formed by rapids, waterfalls and pools that will take us to visit the neighbouring municipality of Antas de Ulla, where we can also enjoy its sulphurous waters in the place of Fádregas, in the parish of Santa Mariña de Amarante.

CAMINO DEL NORTE Esta ruta, también conocida como Camino de la Costa, data de la misma época que el Camino Francés. Durante siglos apenas fue utilizada por los peregrinos, pero tras el auge de las peregrinaciones a Santiago, volvió a coger impulso y cada vez es más popular.

Con sus 820 km, que empiezan en Irún (frontera con Francia), es la segunda ruta más larga. Realizando este periplo conoceremos toda la costa cántabra hasta llegar a adentrarnos en el interior de Galicia.

La etapa lucense del Camino del Norte comienza en Ribadeo. A este municipio llegamos dejando atrás el pueblo asturiano de Figueras y cruzando la ría del Eo, por el puente de Los Santos. Así damos la bienvenida a Galicia y nos adentramos en el primer municipio lucense. Sus calles del casco histórico concentran gran parte de los edificios arquitectónicos que permitieron la declaración de Bien de Interés Cultural en 2004 con la categoría de conjunto histórico. En sus impresionantes calles encontramos las casas populares de artesanos y marineros junto a otros edificios de mayor rango que atestiguan el pasado floreciente de la villa.

Arrancamos una nueva jornada atravesando un hermoso valle de Lourenzá. Entramos en el término municipal de Mondoñedo por las aldeas de Arroxo y Ogrobe con varias capillas visitables. Pasando por San Pedro da Torre, ya entramos al casco urbano por el barrio de San Lázaro. Este ayuntamiento fue declarado conjunto histórico-artístico y es una de las sedes episcopales gallegas de mayor tradición cultural.

Su catedral es de visita obligada, al igual que el edificio anexo, el Palacio Episcopal, que fue residencia de los obispos mindonienses desde que se constituye como sede de la diócesis.

Seguimos caminando por sus calles y llegamos al barrio de Os Muíños, donde está el puente romano de O Pasatempo. También podemos conocer el santuario de la Virgen de los Remedios, la Fuente Vieja o el Consistorio Viejo, entre otros muchos monumentos que destacan de esta villa histórica.

Salimos de Mondoñedo por Lousada y pasamos al municipio de Abadín, donde transitamos por A Xesta y Galgao, conocido por la ermita de San Cosme da Montaña. Avanzamos hasta Gontán, donde se celebra la Expogrelo o la Feira de Santos. Kilómetros después ya entramos en el centro de Abadín, donde nos recibe la iglesia de Santa María, de origen románico, además de otras numerosas muestras de arquitectura popular, cruceros y capillas.

Ya adentrados en A Terra Chá, salimos del ayuntamiento de Abadín por la parroquia de San Xoán Castromaior y nos adentramos en Vilalba por San Bartolomeu de Corvelle. Cruzamos el río Arnela por el puente medieval y pasamos por Pontevella, donde vemos otro puente medieval de tres arcos sobre el río Batán. Alcanzamos Goiriz y conocemos As Chouzas, un ejemplo de arquitectura popular y religiosa, con caseríos, cruceros o lavaderos de piedra.

Entramos en el corazón de A Terra Chá, Vilalba, donde destaca su queso San Simón, o los pollos camperos, que cuentan con su cita gastronómica, la Feria del Capón de Vilalba. Esta villa está dominada por la torre de Andrade, lugar que actualmente ocupa el Parador. En las proximidades de este espacio se encuentra el árbol con nombre propio, la Pravia, un arce blanco centenario.

¿Un descanso?

Si hacemos una parada en el camino y tomamos un respiro antes de empezar la recta final para llegar a la capital gallega, podemos aprovechar para conocer otros municipios de la zona. En esta ocasión tenemos dos opciones, visitar Muras o Xermade. El primero destaca por su Feira do Poldro e do Gando Bravo, el último fin de semana de septiembre. Además, disfrutamos de la sierra de O Xistral o del área de descanso y la playa fluvial del río Eume. En el segundo, podremos ver la iglesia de Cabreiros o la escuela habanera de Roupar.

Cruzamos el puente Rodríguez sobre el río Trimaz, pasamos por San Xoán de Alba y alcanzamos la parroquia de A Torre (Guitiriz), donde visitamos la capilla de San Nicolás, en las inmediaciones del castro que le da el nombre.

Luego, continuamos por Pígara que tiene la denominada Fonte das Verrugas, que debe su nombre a las aguas curativas.

El Camino recorre Casas Novas, Contariz, Casamuniño y Castiñeira. Peregrinamos junto al río Ladra, que ofrece unos paisajes cautivadores. Seguimos y ya entramos en Baamonde, en el municipio de Begonte. Allí podemos visitar la iglesia de Santiago de Baamonde, con rasgos del románico y del gótico.

Para salir de la provincia…

La siguiente etapa atraviesa San Breixo y Santa Locaia de Praga, que despiden el municipio de Guitiriz. Ya llegamos a Friol por los lugares de Seixón, Miraz y Braña. Abandonamos este municipio por A Travesa de Ledro, para cambiar de provincia y llegar a la localidad coruñesa de Sobrado dos Monxes, donde finalizamos.

NORTHERN WAY This route, also known as the Coastal Way, dates from the same period as the French Way. For centuries it was hardly used by pilgrims, but after the pilgrimage boom to Santiago, it regained momentum and it’s becoming increasingly popular. With its 820 km, starting from Irún (on the French border), it is the second longest route. This route takes us along the entire Cantabrian coast all the way to inland Galicia.

RIBADEO – LOURENZÁ The Lugo province section of the Northern Way starts in Ribadeo. We reach this municipality leaving Figueras behind and crossing the Eo estuary, over the bridge of Los Santos. This is how we salute Galicia and enter the first municipality in Lugo. The streets of the historic quarter contain a large part of the architectural buildings that allowed it to be declared Asset of Cultural Interest in 2004 on the category of historic site. In its impressive

streets we find the popular house of artisans and sailors along with other buildings of higher standing that bear witness to the town’s flourishing past.

We leave through San Lázaro street, pass through A Ponte de Arante and reach the next town: Barreiros. We enter through Vilamartín Pequeno, where we can see a valley furrowed by the river Porto Bragán. Then we will arrive at the chapel of Carmen.

Once in Gonzán, we will visit the chapel in honour of Virgen del Pilar (Lady of Pilar) and, next to it, the fountain of Cimadevila.

We leave this municipality and finish this first stretch in Lourenzá, where we visit the Benedictine monastery or the church of Santa María.

There is an alternative route of the Way entering from Asturias through the parish of A Ría de Abres (Trabada) via the bridge over the river Eo, to continue through the parishes of Sante and Trabada, and continue to the A Cadeira heights in direction to Lourenzá.

LOURENZÁ - ABADÍN We start a new day walking through a beautiful valley in Lourenzá, known as Camiño da Brea. We enter the municipality of Mondoñedo through the villages of Arroxo and Ogrobe with various interesting chapels. Passing through San Pedro da Torre, we enter the town centre through the district of San Lázaro. This town council was declared a historic-artistic site and is one of the Galician episcopal seats with the longest cultural tradition. Its cathedral is a must-see, as it is the attached building, the Episcopal Palace, which has been the residence of the Mindonian bishops since it was established as the seat of the diocese. We con-

tinue walking through its streets and arrive at the neighbourhood of Los Molinos, where the Roman bridge of O Pasatempo is located.

We can also visit the sanctuary of the Virgen de los Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies), the Fuente Vieja (Old Fountain) or the Consistorio Viejo (Old Town Hall), among many other monuments that stand out in this historic town.

Leaving Mondoñedo, we pass through Lousada, A Xesta and arrive at Galgao, known for the chapel of San Cosme da Montaña. We continue on to Gontán, where the Expogrelo or Feira de Santos is held. A few kilometres further we enter the centre of Abadín and see the church of Santa María, of Romanesque origin, as well as numerous other examples of popular architecture, cruceiros (stone crosses) and chapels.

ABADÍN - VILALBA Once we have entered Terra Chá, we leave Abadín through the parish of San Xoán Castromaior and enter Vilalba through San Barolomeu de Corvelle. We cross the river Arnela over the medieval bridge and pass Pon-

tevella, and see another medieval bridge with three arches over the river Batán. We reach Goiriz and visit As Chouzas, an example of popular and religious architecture, with farmhouses, stone crosses and stone washhouses.

We enter the heart of A Terra Chá, Vilalba, where its San Simón cheese stands out, or the free-range chickens, which have their own gastronomic event, the Vilalba Rooster Fair. This town lays near the Andrade tower, a place currently occupied by the Parador. In this area’s vicinity we find the tree with a name of its own, the Pravia, a centenary white maple.

A break?

If we make a stop along the way and take a break before starting the final stretch to reach the Galician capital, we can take the opportunity to visit other municipalities in the area. On this occasion we have two options, we can visit Muras or Xermade. The first spot stands out for its Poldro and Cattle Fair, the last weekend of September. We can also enjoy O Xistral mountain range or the leisure

area and the riverside beach of the river Eume. In the latter, we can see the iglesia de Cabreros (Cabreiros church) or the Roupar habanera school.

VILALBA – BAAMONDE We cross the Rodríguez bridge over the river Trimaz, pass through San Xoán de Alba and reach the parish of A Torre. Here we can visit the chapel of San Nicolás, in the vicinity of the castro (pre-Roman settlement) where its name comes from. We pass through Pígara which has the so-called Rugs fountain, which owes its name to its curative waters.

The Way goes through Casas Novas, Contariz, Casamuniño and Castiñeira. On our pilgrimage we pass by the river Ladra, which offers some captivating landscapes. We carry on and enter Baamonde, in the municipality of Begonte. There we can visit the church of Santiago de Baamonde, with Romanesque and Gothic features.

Leaving the province...

Leaving the province, the next stretch passes through San Bre-

ixo and Santa Locaia de Praga, which take us out of the municipality of Guitiriz. We then reach Friol through the villages of Seixón, Miraz and Braña. The final section in Lugo passes through this municipality in A Roxica, A Cabana, A Travesa de Ledro, where we enter the province of A Coruña, to finish this stretch in Sobrado dos Monxes.

CAMINO DE INVIERNO El Camino de Invierno es una gran variante meridional del Camino Francés, que evita las cumbres de O Cebreiro, por lo que resulta más asequible en invierno. Esta alternativa era la que escogían los peregrinos medievales.

Tras finalizar la anterior etapa en la localidad de Quiroga, donde visitamos la iglesia de Seara, de estilo barroco, el castillo de Sequeiros o el pazo de Hospital del siglo XII, avanzamos por el margen derecho del Sil, Espandariz y O Pontido. Descendemos por el curso del río Lor, que baja desde la Serra do Courel y nos deja caminar por un espectacular valle. Cruzamos las aguas por un puente medieval y entramos en el municipio de A Pobra do Brollón. Peregrinamos por Barxa de Lor y subimos hasta O Castro y A Lama.

Alcanzamos Castroncelos y nos adentramos en el casco urbano de A Pobra do Brollón, donde vemos O Brollón, origen de la villa, y los frondosos parajes del río Saa.

Ascendemos hasta el Alto da Serra y el monte Moncai, llegamos a Monforte de Lemos por la calle Cruces, uno de los barrios más antiguos. Este municipio es la capital de la comarca Terra de Lemos y de la Ribeira Sacra, además del núcleo de población más grande de la provincia, después de Lugo.

Destaca por el conjunto arquitectónico de San Vicente do Pino, ubicado en lo alto de una colina que se alza en el corazón de la ciudad, construido en el siglo XVI. En el recinto se alza la torre del Homenaje, el único vestigio que se conserva del castillo de San Vicente. También podemos visitar el colegio de los Padres Escolapios, Nosa Señora da Antiga, también conocido como “El Escorial de Galicia”.

Hablar de Ribeira Sacra es hablar de vino, elaborado con las uvas de los viñedos que se cultivan en los pronunciados bancales que bajan hasta el río. El escarpado terreno hace aquí la vendimia especialmente dura, pero sus caldos forman parte de las cinco denominaciones de origen vinícolas que existen en Galicia, con el nombre de Ribeira Sacra, cuya calidad ha sido avalada en diversos certámenes a nivel internacional.

Si queremos visitar más lugares de este entorno, podemos acercarnos hasta el municipio de Folgoso do Courel, colindante en el norte con Quiroga. Se trata de un lugar que ocupa la mayor parte de la Serra do Courel con paisajes que cautivan. En el lado opuesto está Parada de Sil, donde resaltan sus espectaculares rutas de senderismo, sin olvidarnos de la producción

de castañas y de vinos de excelente calidad. Otro ayuntamiento para hacer una parada es el de Sober, que resalta por la ermita de A Barca, el santuario de A Virxe de Cadeiras o el mirador de Souto Chao. Al finalizar esta etapa nos acercamos hasta Bóveda, conocido por los yacimientos arqueológicos de los castros o el pazo de los marqueses.

Salimos de Monforte por el puente medieval y atravesamos a A Vide, A Lagoa, Os Campos y Pacios. Peregrinamos hasta Moreda, donde observamos su castro, y entramos en el municipio de Pantón por O Reguengo, donde avistamos su espectacular pazo. En Piñeiro resalta su arquitectura popular de plaza, fuente y lavaderos y en Castillón sus restos romanos.

Continuamos y ya llegamos hasta tierras de O Saviñao.

Cruzamos el núcleo de Rendal y descendemos hasta Diomondi, donde impresiona su iglesia. Luego atravesamos por el puente Belesar, sobre el Miño. Empezamos la etapa desde la plaza de Santa Ana (Chantada) y seguimos por la calle Uxío Novoneyra.

Hórreos, petos de ánimas y cruceros nos salen al paso camino de Centulle y San Xurxo de Asma. Peregrinamos por Chao de Seixas y ascendemos hasta la ermita de A Nosa Señora do Faro, con unas de las vistas más bellas, a 1.100 metros de altitud. Aunque esta visión de Galicia no se puede perder, si queremos evitar subir hasta la ermita, podemos ir dirección Mouricios y San Vicente, un camino más corto. Luego ya iríamos dirección Río, lugar del municipio pontevedrés de Rodeiro.

En esta etapa podemos aprovechar para visitar el ayuntamiento de Carballedo, donde disfrutamos de los paisajes que nos ofrece el río Búbal, el más pequeño de los tres ríos que se juntan en Os Peares, junto con los grandes Miño y Sil; recibe su nombre por la parroquia de Carballedo de Santa Baia de Búbal (Santalla). También podemos conocer Taboada, con su templo de Moreda, que conserva restos románicos en las saeteras, o la torre de Moreda, adosada a un cuerpo de una sola planta, que tuvo en su sótano la cárcel jurisdiccional en el siglo XIX.

WINTER WAY The Winter Way is a large southern variant of the French Way, which avoids the peaks of O Cebreiro, making it more accessible in winter. This alternative was chosen by medieval pilgrims.

It covers the four Galician provinces through just over 200 km.

It starts in Ponferrada, follows the natural course of the river Sil through the province of Ourense, and then runs through the south of the province of Lugo, crossing into Pontevedra through the region of Deza, make its way to Compostela.

QUIROGA - MONFORTE DE LEMOS After finishing the previous stage in the town of Quiroga, where we visited the church of Seara, of the baroque style, the castle of Sequeiros or the pazo de Hospital of (2nd Century), we proceed though the right margin of the river Sil, Espandariz

and O Pontido. We walk along the course of the river Lor, which descends from the Serra do Courel forming a spectacular valley. Crossing the waters through a medieval bridge, and enter the municipality of A Pobra do Brollón. We made a pilgrimage through Barxa de Lor and climbed up to O Castro and A Lama. We reach Castroncelos and enter the town of A Pobra do Brollón, where we see O Brollón, the village’s origin, and the lush landscapes of the river Saa. We ascend to the Alto da Serra and Mount Moncai, reaching Monforte de Lemos by Rúa Cruces, one of the oldest neighborhoods. This municipality is the capital of the region Terra de Lemos and the Ribeira Sacra, in addition to the largest population center in the province, after Lugo. It stands out for the architectural ensemble of San Vicente do Pino, a temple located on top of a hill that rises in the heart of the city, built in the sixteenth century. Next to the enclosure, rises the Tower of the Tribute, the unique vestige that is conserved of the castle of San Vicente. We can also visit

the school of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, known as the Escorial of Galicia.

A delight To speak of the Ribeira Sacra is to speak of wine, made from the grapes of the vineyards that are grown on the steep terraces that go down to the river. The steep terrain makes the harvest especially hard here, but its wines are part of the five denominations of wine that exist in Galicia, with the name of Ribeira Sacra, whose quality has been endorsed in various international competitions.

Other places If we want to visit more places in this area, we can go to the municipality of Folgoso do Courel, bordering on the north with Quiroga. It is a place that occupies most of the Serra do Courel with captivating landscapes.

On the opposite side is Parada de Sil, where its spectacular hiking trails stand out. We mustn’t forget the production of chestnuts and wines of excellent quality. Another town hall to make a stop is Sober, which stands out

for the hermitage of A Barca, the sanctuary of A Virxe de Cadeiras or the viewpoint of Souto Chao. At the end of this stage we approach Bóveda, known for the archaeological sites of the castros and the palace of the marquises.

MONFORTE DE LEMOS CHANTADA Leaving Monforte over the medieval bridge we walk across A Vide, A Lagoa, Os Campos and Pacios. We make our pilgrimage to Moreda, with its castro, and enter the municipality of Pantón via O Reguengo, where we can see its spectacular pazo. In Piñeiro we see its popular architecture with its square, fountain and washing places, and in Castillón its Roman remains. We continue and reach the lands of O Saviñao. We cross the village of Rendal and descend to Diomondi, that boasts an impressive church.

We then cross the Belesar bridge over the river Miño. We visit this village and carry on to San Pedro de Líncora, now in Chantada. In this municipality we can visit the Fervenza do Fondós or the ruins of the sanctuary of Fátima.

CHANTADA - RODEIRO We start the journey from Santa Ana square (Chantada) and continue along Rúa Uxío Novoneyra. Hórreos (typical granary from Galicia), petos de ánimas (religious images usually placed by a road) and crucifixes appear on our way to Centulle and San Xurxo de Asma. We make our pilgrimage through Chao de Seixas and ascend to the hermitage of A Nosa Señora do Faro, with one of the most beautiful views, at an altitude of 1,000 metres. Although this view of Galicia is not to be missed, if we want to avoid climbing up to the hermitage, we can go in the direction of Mouricios and San Vicente, a shorter route. Then we would go towards Río, a place in the municipality of Rodeiro in Pontevedra.

We can take the opportunity to visit the town council of Carballedo, with impressive landscapes offered by the river Búbal, the smallest of the three rivers that meet in Os Peares, together with the great rivers Miño and Sil. OTROS CAMINOS CAMINO DEL NORTE INTERIOR

Este Camino no está marcado como ruta jacobea oficial, pero es un trayecto atractivo para conocer otros municipios de Lugo de alto interés. Entra en la provincia desde O Cairo al municipio de A Pontenova y atraviesa los lugares de Saldoiriña y Boulloso, en la parroquia de Conforto. Este último es conocido por su maravillosa área recreativa, donde podemos disfrutar de un momento de descanso.

Este sendero pasa por los municipios de Meira, Pol, Castro de Rei, Lugo y Friol y finalmente se une al Camino del Norte en Sobrado dos Monxes. Al escoger esta ruta también podemos aprovechar para visitar otros lugares que se encuentran cerca, como puede ser Riotorto, con su castro y sus monumentos arqueológicos, o también A Pastoriza, donde resalta el templo de Bretoña, cuna de la diócesis de Mondoñedo-Ferrol, porque fue la antigua sede episcopal de la diócesis de Britonia hasta el siglo VIII. Otros lugares a tener en cuenta durante esta ruta son Castro de Rei, Outeiro de Rei o Rábade, tres municipios del interior lucense, cuyos paisajes no dejan indiferente a nadie.

CAMINO DEL MAR El Camino del Mar tiene un recorrido de unos 140 km, en el que se conservan prácticamente todos los hospitales de peregrinos que en el pasado formaban la red hospitalaria de atención a los peregrinos como los hospitales de Ribadeo, San Martiño, Cervo, Celeiro o Santiago de Viveiro. Caminando nos encontramos con unas de las mejores panorámicas del norte español, al bordear la cornisa cantábrica. Llegamos a zonas montañosas y costeras, donde se mezclan los colores mari-

nos con los verdes de las praderas. Además, también disfrutamos de lugares importantes de la cultura y tradición gallega.

Este camino empieza en el municipio de Ribadeo y continúa por Barreiros, Foz, Burela, Cervo, Xove, Viveiro y O Vicedo, en dirección Ortigueira y Ferrol, para unirse con el trazado oficial del Camino Inglés, hasta llegar a la capital gallega, Santiago de Compostela. Al hacer esta ruta por el norte gallego, también podemos aprovechar para visitar tres municipios que se encuentran cerca: Alfoz, O Valadouro y Ourol.

RUTAS ALTERNATIVAS VÍA KÜNIG Este sendero es una variante del Camino Francés que pasa por la ciudad de Lugo. Debe su nombre al monje alemán Hermann Künig, autor de la guía de peregrinos medieval que recoge este itinerario. Esta vía empieza en Pedrafita do Cebreiro y continúa por As Nogais, Becerreá, Baralla, O Corgo y finalmente llega a la ciudad de Lugo. Luego enlaza con el Camino Primitivo hasta Santiago de Compostela.

Se trata de una ruta con paisajes espectaculares, donde además podemos disfrutar de la gastronomía gallega durante esta caminata. Aprovechamos este recorrido para conocer otros municipios como Cervantes, donde destaca el castillo de Doiras, declarado Bien de Interés Cultural en el año 1994, o las pallozas de origen castreño que aún se conservan. También nos podemos acercar hasta Navia de Suarna, con su castillo o el área recreativa.

PEDRAFITA DO CEBREIRO-LUGO Si queremos una alternativa para hacer una ruta pequeña podemos empezar en Pedrafita do Cebreiro y seguir un sendero que nos lleva hasta Lugo. Haremos una primera etapa hasta la parroquia de Toldaos (Triacastela). Continuamos caminando por este municipio y llegamos hasta Láncara, donde haremos la siguiente parada en Bande. Ya para finalizar esta ruta alternativa atravesamos O Corgo y llegamos hasta la ciudad de Lugo.

Si queremos caminar un poco más, antes de salir de Láncara, visitamos el municipio de O Páramo, donde vemos el bonito puente medieval de Neira que atraviesa el río del mismo nombre. No muy lejos, observamos Vilarmosteiro, allí paramos para ver los pendellos o sus maravillosos pazos, como el de Paredes o el de Neira.

OTHER ROADS INTERIOR NORTH ROAD This route is not marked as an official pilgrimage route, but it is an attractive way to get to know other municipalities of Lugo of great interest. It enters the province from O Cairo to the municipality of A Pontenova and crosses the places of Saldoiriña and Boulloso, in the parish of Conforto. The latter is known for its impressive recreational area, ideal to enjoy a little break.

THE SEA WAY The Camino del Mar has a route of about 140 km, which preserves practically all the hospitals for pilgrims that in the past formed the hospitals for pilgrims network, such as those of Ribadeo, San Martiño, Cervo, Celeiro or Santiago de Viveiro. As we walk we find some of the best panoramic views of northern Spain, bordering the Cantabrian coast. As we keep walking we reach mountainous and coastal

areas, where the colours of the sea mix ALTERNATIVE ROUTES VIA KÜNIG This trail is a variant of the French Way that crosses the city of Lugo.

It owes its name to the German monk Hermann Künig, author of the medieval pilgrims’ guide that includes this itinerary. This route begins in Pedrafita do Cebreiro and continues through As Nogais, Becerreá, Baralla, O Corgo and finally reaches the city of Lugo.

It then links up with the Primitive Way to Santiago de Compostela.

This is a route with spectacular landscapes, and we can also enjoy the Galician gastronomy during this walk. Making the most of this route we can visit other municipalities such as Cervantes, with its castle of Doiras, declared of Cultural Interest in 1994, or the pallozas (traditional dwelling of pre-roman times).

We can also visit Navia de Suarna, with its castle and recreational area for a little break.

PEDRAFITA DO CEBREIRO -LUGO If we want an alternative, shorter route, we can start in Pedrafita and follow a all the way to Lugo.

The first stage takes us to the parish of Toldaos (Triacastela), and then reach Láncara, making our next stop in Bande. To finish this alternative route, we cross O Corgo and reach the city of Lugo.

If we want to walk a little further, before leaving Láncara, we visit the municipality of O Páramo and visit the beautiful medieval bridge of Neira, which crosses the river of the same name. Not far away is Vilarmosteiro, where we can make a stop to see the “pendellos” or its stunning manor houses, such as Paredes or Neira.
