Telford & Wrekin Council today welcomed the announcement that Magna International Inc plans to build a new world class aluminium casting facility at T54. Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Business, hailed the announcement as an “extremely significant” day for the borough of Telford and Wrekin. “I am delighted that Magna International has decided to locate its new multi-million pound facility here in Telford,” said Councillor Davies. “This signals the dawn of a bright new era of opportunity for everyone in the borough. In Telford, we pride ourselves on being inventive and dynamic and the details of the high tech production process Magna has announced for its planned facility shows that they are a perfect fit for us.
Operating between South West England, Wales and Ireland through the ports of Bristol, Cardiff, Warrenpoint and Dublin, Cronus provides the industry with a cost effective southern supply chain service across the Irish Sea that saves on road miles, CO2 emissions and gives its customers a competitive market edge.
“We have been talking to Magna International for more than two years and an awful lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to make this possible so today is a realisation of all those discussions.
Uniquely on the Irish Sea, Cronus Logistics controls the entire supply chain from point of collection to point of delivery. Operating its own ships,

through to the conclusion of the deal in the last few weeks. “This has been made possible as a result of the land deal that we announced in March with the Homes and Communities Agency and the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership, which will see us deliver 8500 new jobs through investing in bringing sites like T54 to the market. “Magna’s announcement today represents a hugely significant multi-million pound investment which demonstrates that Telford & Wrekin Council’s drive to attract new business and jobs is realising spectacular results. “This major development will see the creation of 295 skilled local jobs when the plant is at full capacity. The investment will also support many more jobs in the local supply chain. “It also demonstrates the value of our strengthening links with the West Midlands and its world wide reputation for advanced manufacturing. Rover’s i54 complex, we are seeing significant levels and enquiries and we are confident more market leaders from the automotive supplies sector will be investing in Telford. “Magna’s proposed world class aluminium casting facility in Telford will be the largest automotive development in the West Midlands after the Jaguar Land Rover complex at the i54 site. We confidently expect that this will prove a gateway for further investment in the T54 site, which is already home to AXYZ Automation and Filtermist International. “Subject to receiving planning permission, we expect that construction on the new facility will begin in the autumn of this year. Magna has said production will begin in 2018.” T54 is Telford and Wrekin’s flagship automotive and advanced manufacturing employment site.

EvoBus – A GLOBAL SOLUTION, BUILT FOR COMFORT
AN UNCOMFORTABLE REALITY In a crowded yet growing market space, bus and coach manufacturers alike must find new and innovative ways to improve the customer experience and to this end, many have found increased passenger comfort to be a source of competitive advantage. Until fairly recently, the headrests in buses and coaches have typically consisted of little more than a rigid frame covered with a thick piece of foam. Needless to say, this did not give passengers the level of comfort desired, making it difficult to properly rest and somewhat diminishing the appeal of bus and coach travel against other forms of transport. From a maintenance perspective, traditional headrests typically require regular overhaul, often at considerable expense and inconvenience. In response to these issues, EvoBus, a leading German bus manufacturer and wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, began exploring ways to differentiate its premium bus seat offering. EvoBus was seeking a solution that would allow the passenger to position the headrest according to their own individual preferences and for it it remain in place during use. This search for an innovative product solution led the company to turn to Southco, a pioneer in torque hinge technology. Southco’s experience in applying this technology to headrest design in the Automotive as well as Aerospace industries allowed EvoBus to implement a solution using Southco’s ST Torque Cartridge Embedded Hinge Series which features an embedded constant torque hinge within a plastic overmoulded headrest.
10
A CONVENIENT SOLUTION With current headrest designs, vertical adjustment has previously been achieved with limited success, resulting in inconsistent cycle life. Outdated vertical friction affects the reliability and functionality of headrests over time, resulting in a design that cannot maintain position and thus no longer supports a passenger’s head. Southco’s headrest solutions feature standard integrated positioning technology, which provide reliable and flexible constant torque capabilities in a small package, allowing them to be seamlessly integrated into the bus manufacturer’s moulded headrest assembly. Asymmetric torque allows the design engineer to specify various operating efforts in different directions of motion, allowing the passenger to easily pull the headrest wings forward for adjustment, yet still be supported when resting the full weight of their head against it. Additionally, the hinge stays fully encapsulated and hidden, thereby enhancing the aesthetic value of the seat design. The simple assembly is complemented by convenient, maintenancefree constant torque technology, which provides constant resistance to the headrest through the entire range of motion with zero-drift and backlash.
THE COMPETITIVE EDGE With its international manufacturing and engineering presence, Southco offered a key design advantage in that it was able to complete the design in Germany and also
www.transportmonthly.co.uk
support production in India, where its team of experts was able to work in close collaboration with representatives from Daimler group and its subcontractor. “Southco’s ability to collaborate on all fronts gave us the confidence that we would be given the level of support necessary to deliver the project, from start to finish” says Martin Gaub, Project Leader at EvoBus.
REACHING THE DESTINATION Working in close collaboration with EvoBus, Southco played an instrumental part in delivering a unique headrest design that will maximise comfort for passengers across the bus and coach segments. Furthermore, Southco’s unique approach to hinge manufacturing means that the headrests will require zero maintenance or readjustment throughout their cycle life, saving considerable time and money associated with routine maintenance. With its global footprint, Southco offers unrivalled technical, operational and commercial support – this, combined with its engineering excellence and industry-leading expertise in friction hinge technology, truly distinguished its solution from the rest – improving ergonomics and creating a quality experience designed for the next generation of bus and coach passengers. EvoBus showcased the results at the 2015 Bus World Exhibition in Kortrijk, Belgium, the world’s foremost bus exhibition, where an overwhelmingly positive response was received to the pioneering use of hinge technology.

DELIVERY SOFTWARE THAT TICKS EVERY BOX
VOLVO FL RIGIDS ARE THE MASTER CHEFS OF KITCHEN DISTRIBUTION
The vehicles are the company’s first Volvo trucks and are being used for the nationwide distribution of kitchen components from worktops and units to appliances and even lighting. Group Logistics Manager, Matt Elborough says: “Driver and road-user safety, environmental impact, fuel economy, driver comfort, reliability, usability and network support were all identified as prerequisites when it came to renewing what is essentially over one third of our entire 40-strong fleet of trucks and vans.”
“In choosing the new trucks we started with a blank sheet and looked at all the options. Through this exhaustive process it was the Volvo FL that stood out as the only truck that met all of the criteria we’d defined at the outset. Needless to say, I think the Volvo iron mark on the front also does wonders for our corporate image, which is an added bonus,” he adds. For overnight accommodation the new trucks’ day cabs are fitted with Super Sky Cab conversions by Hatcher Components of Framlingham, Suffolk and bodywork is in
18
the form of ‘Cheetah’ fast back bodies from Cartwright Group of Altrincham for enhanced aerodynamic performance.
“We take the environment extremely seriously,” explains Matt. “Everything about these new trucks, from the fuel saving curved roof through the highly responsive and effective 6-speed overdrive I-Sync automated mechanical gearbox to the high torque at low revs 210hp engines is about efficiency and limiting our impact on the environment. This attention to detail has already been borne out in fuel figures that show we’re returning over 16mpg. This has really impressed.” Running a low chassis frame height of 850mm above ground and with two bag rear air suspension, the new Volvo FLs have been specified with safety and comfort very much in mind. “The Hatcher conversion is the most comfortable for our drivers,” says Matt, adding, “Air suspended and heated driver seats with additional lumbar support continue that comfort theme into the cab and our drivers appreciate it. I am positive this investment has boosted their morale.”
www.transportmonthly.co.uk
When it comes to safety the new Volvo FLs are bristling with features and technology designed to put well-being to the fore. ”Driver safety is massively important to us as is that of vulnerable road users,” says Matt. To these ends, the new trucks are specified to FORS and CLOCS standards and include forward, rear and nearside facing cameras. Additionally, we have supplementary lights fitted in the steps on the driver’s side as well as additional lighting at the top of the box body to illuminate the loading area plus a Dhollandia tuck-away tail-lift. Furthermore, the box has been specifically tailored to precisely meet our needs in respect of safe loading and fixing.” Dealer support from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London at Tongwell in Milton Keynes has been pivotal in the realisation of the fleet renewal. ”The service from Tongwell has been excellent,” states Matt. ”The dealership really looked after our earlier non-Volvo trucks and I was keen to continue this relationship. Furthermore, when it came to specifying these new Volvo FLs, the dealer really helped us to arrive at something that is ideal for our needs. And with a 3-year Gold Repair & Maintenance contract I have confidence for the future.”

VOLVO TRUCK AND BUS CENTRE LONDON, MILTON KEYNES WORKSHOP SUPERVISOR ROB GRAY CELEBRATES 40 YEARS’ SERVICE Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London, Milton Keynes Workshop Supervisor Robert ‘Rob’ Gray recently celebrated 40 years’ service with the dealership. The happy occasion was marked by an end-of-shift gathering of Rob’s colleagues at the Milton Keynes Dealerpoint. The event came as a complete surprise to Rob, a quiet and hardworking gentleman, who was somewhat shocked, but nevertheless pleased at the attention he received in honour of his sterling, long-service achievement. In a short speech, in which he thanked Rob for his dedication and professionalism, Dealerpoint Manager Brian Mills - himself a veteran with 38 years’ service - reported that it was apparent that Rob had many friends

hours spent away from home, the callouts at unsocial hours as a result of the genuine dedication to customer service displayed by Rob in the course of his duties at the dealership.
Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London Aftermarket Operations Director Nick Phillips then presented Rob with gift vouchers and a certificate commemorating his 40 years’ service.
Rob Gray started his Volvo career as an apprentice technician with the Billows dealership (the first Volvo Truck dealership in the UK and precursor to Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London) on June 2nd, 1976. During his 40 year career so far, he has worked on every type of Volvo truck, from F86, F88, F89, F-Series, FL-Series and of course FM, FH and FH16.

When asked what comment he would like to make about his momentous long service and his time with the dealership, Rob said that he has ‘enjoyed every minute of it’ so far and is always ready for the next challenge.

PATERSONS’ COMFORT AND JOY HERE In addition to a useful payload of around 20 tonnes each trip, Volvo’s rugged FMX model is also delivering new levels of comfort for Scottish operator, Patersons Quarries Limited. Five new Volvo FMX 8x4 tippers were delivered into the company’s Rigside, South Lanarkshire, depot in late April and transport manager, Gordon Carlton was immediately on the receiving end of some positive staff feedback. “We took drivers off our other make tippers, all of which were registered during 2015,” reports Gordon Carlton, adding, “Within the first few days of operation, reaction to the new FMXs was amazing. All were reporting a noticeable increase in fuel consumption levels, with a truck straight out of the box, and a big difference in cab comfort. Some have noticed how relaxed the driving experience is with Volvo’s I-Shift automated gearbox and others are sensing reduced levels of tiredness after a full dayshift, meaning they go home feeling more refreshed and ready for family life. With the current nationwide shortages of

experienced professionals, happy drivers are good news to me.” Supplied by Rhona Paterson at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland, Glasgow West, with full R&M packages, the five FMX tippers were specified with Day cabs over Volvo’s 11 litre, D11K370 diesel engine, which produces a maximum of 370hp between 1600 and 1900rpm. Gordon Carlton reports the power plant as being well on top of Patersons Quarries’ 32-tonne tipper operations across central Scotland and northern England. He also expects the excellent fuel returns to improve further as the trucks bed in. The 12-speed I-Shift gearboxes come with Volvo’s Distribution and Construction software packages, whilst for off road quarry

work, Gordon Carlton opted for X-High B-Ride suspension and straight front axles. The FMXs’ generous ground clearance is also complemented by a high mounted 330 litre fuel tank. Patersons Quarries fitted Weightlifter alloy tipper bodies to the five new FMXs, giving a kerbside weight of around 12.1 tonnes, and feature high sides and three-point contact, access steps for safety, whilst Hyva hydraulics and a Dawbarn automatic sheeting system round off the load carrying specifications. A Volvo reversing camera and Smart Witness front facing / vehicle perimeter camera system are included as part of the company’s standard safety features.

FTA helps drivers stay one step ahead in France The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is helping drivers plan ahead with live updates on the fuel shortages in France thanks to the country’s English-speaking newspaper Connexion France. Up to half of France’s 10,000 filling stations have run dry or are short of fuel due to protests at refineries over new labour laws. FTA members have reported lengthy queues and limits on the amount of fuel purchased, causing serious problems for UK freight operators and holidaymakers ahead of the half-term break. In addition to information alerts that the Association is sending to its members, FTA is advising drivers heading to Europe to
check the Connexions France website (www. connexionsfrance.com) which has a real-time map of availability of fuel at filling stations across the country. The map is provided by the free Essence Pas Chere mobile phone app, which can also be used once in France to find nearby filling stations which still have fuel.
deliveries to shops could be affected as drivers struggle to get fuel. FTA hopes the protests and blockades don’t extend to the Port of Calais like last summer, when we saw unprecedented chaos and disruption to the supply chain costing our members hundreds of thousands of pounds.”
James Hookham, FTA’s Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Awareness and planning are key if you’re travelling through France in the next few days. Try to ensure you have enough fuel when you leave the UK and if you need to fill up, check the website or app to see which stations still have fuel. “If the situation deteriorates further,
FTA has previously voiced its concerns over disruption to commercial drivers traveling through France as seen last summer, and outlined a five-point plan of measures to tackle the issues which included a call for the Port of Calais and Eurotunnel facilities to be declared off-limits to any industrial action.

“We are professional, reliable, always go the extra mile and offer a realistic fair price. “Based on the great feedback we get on the way we take clients through every step of transporting process, constantly updating them, we genuinely feel this is the reason why we have secured a strong place in the freight forwarding market.” The company is now embarking on a major export drive with two new team members who will work with Spencer to grow this side of the business even more. SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services for energy and communications, will form a direct part of ProRail’s ‘Tidy Yards’ programme. As part of the ‘Improve Lighting’ project, SPIE will be responsible for two of the four lots on offer. It concerns a tender amount of almost two million Euros. The objective of ProRail is to properly organise all yards in the Netherlands, making sure they comply with regulations regarding working conditions and the environment. It ensures they are, and continue to be maintained well, and that information provision is up-todate. Yards composed of the shunting yards and tracks. These sites are used by every carrier that has access to the railways, to load and unload goods. During this project, provisions will be optimised on the basis of carrier bottlenecks; SPIE will be working in the Northern and Southern Randstad Conurbation regions.
fittings and depot supplies, while train preheating and compressed air systems will be removed. SPIE will also lay cables and wiring; it will connect the power supply and will be responsible for light control. Safety will play an important role during this project; the work will be carried out in accordance with the strictest safety requirements. ProRail is looking to gain a competitive advantage in the “railway building sector.”Therefore, on the basis of technical competencies, it selected three companies to participate in its private invitation to tender. SPIE’s tender manager, Ron van Ginkel, is pleased with the contract: “SPIE previously operated as a subcontractor for ProRail. Within the framework of this contract we could score a maximum of 2 out of the 4 lots, and we did it. It’s a magnificent step towards collaboration with ProRail as a direct contractor.”
EMKA describe hardware package for small housings and boxes
Small housings and boxes for electrical or electronic equipment require appropriate door hardware such as the small quarter-turn 1022 range from EMKA. These robust lowcost locks in zinc die or polyamide offer insert key or cylinder lock closure in a body format of 20mm diameter, and so take up minimal space on the door itself. The 1022 range is also available in stainless steel where needed. EMKA’s hinging solution for small boxes is often provided by their 1056 clip-together polyamide program with countersunk machine screw or expanding plastic rivet fixing. These are available in compact 40x40mm or 50x50mm sizes. Sealing of these small housings is typically taken care of with a sealing profile such as the EMKA 1038 gasket in EPDM which provides a simple edge seal and easy fitment with self-grip design to suit a flanged door panel in 1.0 to 1.6mm steel. W.I.T. celebrates in style with anniversary Actros
Euro 2016: How employers can avoid an own goal
As with its other tractors, W.I.T. is taking advantage of the free, two-year MercedesBenz Repair and Maintenance Contract that came with its new Actros. For the rigids, and for older vehicles, the operator carries out inspections and routine maintenance in its own workshop, but relies on the Dealer for warranty work and regular parts deliveries.
arrangement. Some employers may want to consider implementing flexible working or shift swaps.
Sickness and unauthorised absence An employee who has been refused leave or who does not believe it will be granted may not turn up for work, or call in sick during the tournament. Whilst this is likely to raise suspicions, employers should take care not to jump to conclusions. Unauthorised absences/ lateness should be investigated before disciplinary action is considered.
Mr Brown continued: “MercedesBenz trucks have always been exceptionally reliable and, particularly in recent years, impressively fuelefficient. But it’s difficult to buy a bad truck these days, which means that relationships and the quality of the after sales back-up are crucial. Thirty-five years after he launched his business, W.I.T. Transport Solutions founder Phil Brown has commissioned a special Mercedes-Benz truck to mark the milestone. The Actros 2545 BigSpace tractor unit arrived via the Mansfield branch of East Midlands Dealer Mertrux and wears a livery highlighting the anniversary. A real headturner, it is fitted with lightweight Alcoa alloy wheels and Kelsa LED light bars, as well as colour-coded and chrome trim. Mertrux, which represents MercedesBenz in the East Midlands, has been a trusted supplier to W.I.T. since day one. Indeed, Mr Brown still has an invoice for the first vehicle supplied by the Dealer to the company previously known as Worksop Industrial Tippers – the £5,700 bill relates to a 7.5-tonne Mercedes-Benz 608D delivered in 1979, two years before he acquired the business. W.I.T. Transport Solutions is still based in Worksop and has specialised for many years in the transportation of bulky, lightweight goods. It is the major logistics partner of Schütz UK, which has a production facility in the town, and for which it provides a nationwide delivery and collection service for new and used intermediate bulk containers – an alternative to the traditional 45-gallon drum, the 1,000-litre IBC is designed to contain liquids such as paints, chemicals and fuels.
32
The operator runs approximately 40 tractor units and drawbar combinations. All but three of these vehicles are by Mercedes-Benz. Unlike the anniversary Actros, most of the tractors are 4x2 variants and plated for operation at 38 tonnes gcw – the company’s trailer fleet includes three extra-long 14.6m curtainsiders by SDC, which offer the same, 56 IBC carrying capacity as a drawbar rig with 12-tonne Atego prime mover.
Social media and the Internet During the tournament there may be an increase in the use of social media, the Internet and requests to watch matches during working hours. Employers should have a clear policy on web use and ensure that this is clearly communicated to employees. Employees should be advised that abuse of such a policy will result in disciplinary action.
“I’ve been a very loyal customer of Mertrux and have lost count of the number of vehicles I have bought from its Key Account ManagerMartin Stock over the years, during which I’ve always been able to rely on the Dealer for timely, professional support. We also speak regularly to Steve Allen, After Sales Manager at its Mansfield branch, who leads a first-class team.”
Match screening Finally, to avoid the headache of low attendance at work and a flood of holiday requests, employers may decide to allow staff to watch or listen to the games at work, which may well boost morale and team spirit within the workplace.
www.witrans.co.uk
W.I.T. usually buys new vehicles but its latest Actros is an ex-Mertrux demonstration unit. Mr Brown purchased the vehicle at the suggestion of longserving driver Maurice ‘Moggie’ Button.
Remember though, not all employees will be football fans and so employers should be careful not to discriminate against those who aren’t.
“Moggie reminded me that this was our 35th anniversary and suggested I might like to buy him a smart new truck to mark the occasion,” he laughed. “It struck me as a great idea so I decided to take him up on it.” Although it specialises in the distribution of high-volume goods, W.I.T. also undertakes general haulage work and the 44-tonne combination provides additional flexibility to meet all requirements. The new Mercedes-Benz is equipped with a host of optional extras to make life more comfortable for its driver, include a fridge and microwave oven. “It’s no surprise that Moggie loves his Actros and has already presented it at a couple of truck shows,” said Mr Brown.

other at 2pm on Thursday 16 June. The UEFA football European championships – Euro 2016 – start on Friday 10 June, which means businesses are likely to see an increased demand for time off, experience problems with lateness, sickness absence and possibly a reduction in productivity during the tournament. New Ford Transit Ecoblue Engine
Ford Transit Munich Test Drive
Ford has always been renowned for their trust-worthy, ‘workhorse’ Transit vans. In an era where reductions on carbon emissions are really important, Ford have released their 2.0ltr Ecoblue engine for their latest range of Transit vans increasing fuel efficiency from their previous 2.2ltr engine Transit vans. This month, Transport Monthly were back at it again- this time with Ford in the German city of Munich. Ford told us some great things about the new engines and vehicles, so it was only fair that we put them to the test in real-world driving conditions in rural Munich. We drove all 3 variants of the 2.0-litre engines, the 105hp, 130hp and 170hp and the manufacturer says the all-new 2.0-litre engine will offer improved

cost of ownership and performance for customers when it is available after mid-2016. Ford also added the Ecoblue unit increases fuel efficiency by up to 13% compared with the outgoing 2.2litre TDCi engine, with CO2 emissions from 157g/km. The new engine, which is available to order now, will also deliver up to two-year/37,000-mile variable service intervals for Transit and Transit Custom operators. Ford’s first mirror-image inlet manifold and a low-inertia turbocharger with rocket engine materials help deliver more than 20 percent more low-end torque meaning you will have more power without having to put the engine through its paces.
operate, improve performance, make it cleaner in terms of emissions, quieter in the cabin, safer and even more durable,” said Pete Reyes, Ford of Europe’s Head of Commercial Vehicles. After spending time with the vehicles we have to agree with fords claims. Finally, later on this year, customers will also be able to specify a six-speed automatic transmission in place of a manual gearbox, and a new rear air suspension option will be available on Transit Custom Kombi models. All in all, the new Transit prevails as a great van and now with the upgrades in efficiencies, they seem to be on to a winner.

Pickup head to head
Price*
Handling On & off roaD
Isuzu - “At just over £19,000 including the upgraded trim, the Isuzu outright steals the show in terms of pricing, and so those working on a slightly tighter budget will see this as a huge plus”. Navara – “Prices starting at £22,000 is about what you would expect to pay for a brand new Navara, and even at £35,000 for the fully loaded it is still feasible”. L200- “Starting from £23,799 with all leather interior, heated seats and an 180bhp engine, the L200 Barbarian is a fair middle price point compared to its competitors”.
Fuel Economy
Isuzu – “The Isuzu felt heavy on the road. That said, the Isuzu gripped well and got around our slalom track and handled itself okay around the off-road track”. Navara – “The Navara is very good off road with the hill descent assist button so there’s no need to have to worry too much about sliding as the Navara does the braking for you, leaving you to deal with getting the correct position on the road/track. On harsh turns, it does seem to feel very stiff.” L200 – “The L200 is an animal off road and was really at home- scaling hills and muddy terrain. I couldn’t help but be conscious that the side skirts and tow bar would come unstuck as it gently scrapped the rugged terrain”.
Performance
Isuzu – “With an average of 38.7mpg you’d imagine the Isuzu would excel in this department, and that’s correct. The Fury performed well in our tests and gave an accurate representation of the claimed economy”. Navara - “I was averaging 33.4mpg driving as I normally would which I think is really good compared to the advised MPG average of 40MPG. For the size and power of the Navara, I think for fuel economy it does what it says on the tin”. L200 – “On the motorway in sixth gear the engine sits nicely at 1800rpm at 70mph, which really helps boost economy and cutting noise - pushing mid 40ty mpg. When testing the L200, I managed to average around 30mpg, although Mitsubishi did claim 42.8mpg”.
Isuzu – “The Fury was slow to get going and the gear changes were awful. It was as if I was driving an 18-tonne truck and I could have easily fallen between the gaps in the gears! On the flip side, though, once it gets going it has a commendable top speed of just over 110mph and it will get there- albeit in around 3 weeks”. Navara – “Given the weight of the Navara, it still performed well. Producing 187bhp and 332 lb-ft. of torque, it pulls strongly and progressively, making light of the Navara’s two-tonne bulk weight”. L200 - “Low down torque gives the impression of some speed, and has a 0-62 time of 10.4”.
Interior/Styling
The Winner
Isuzu – “The Isuzu from the outside looks like a really tough pickup. The styling is exactly what I’d like from a pick-up truck, but unfortunately, in terms of interior, the vehicle is disappointingly lacking. The technology falls short of what I’d expect as well and no sensors cause a sense of unease with the size of the vehicle and the lack of standard features such as cruise control make you question where the target market actually is”. Navara – “The styling was on-point so to speak as it wasn’t anything over the top. The dashboards design gave a feel of space and that helped with the comfort side you could move the seat to my preferred position whereas, in the past, some seats stop you going too far back. The design of the interior was very luxurious for a pickup and the technology in the Navara was also very good due to the simplicity”. L200 – “Inside the L200 Barbarian, it was like sitting inside an electrical shop with all the led lights buttons and touchscreen media centre. Not that this is a bad thing- I loved the endless gadgets and gizmos. A good level of in-cab tech.
40
www.transportmonthly.co.uk
Our verdict is simple. After analysing our findings, we find that the Nissan Navara NP300 triumphs as a clear overall winner. As one of the most versatile pick-up trucks available on the thriving 4X4 market, the Navara excelled in every test we did. Starting at just £22,000, the Nissan Navara NP300 is a great performer both on and off-road, and with silique and classy designs, it gets the nod from us. However, although the Navara came out on top, we found that the reflection in price between the 3 pick-ups was very different. We would say the L200 and the Navara were both very close when it came to our tests and we would recommend all three vehicles depending on what our readers are looking for.

FW: "We are dedicating significant investments to technical and R&D support to our business partners, building on our already strong speciality expertise. We have impressive capabilities available in the UK and Ireland, and our customers can further benefit from Brenntag’s global network. For instance, the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) accredited laboratory and dedicated filling systems for pharmaceutical customers in Germany, or European Cosmetics Formulation and Development laboratory based in France which is especially dedicated to the development of innovative formulations. Such laboratory application facilities create a real opportunity for collaboration between Brenntag and end users to formulate new products and innovate in terms of existing ones for the benefit of all parties and the chemical industry overall. With this in mind, we are working on various projects such as food application laboratory in Widnes, material science laboratory in Lutterworth, water treatment application laboratory in Bradford, all of which epitomise our focused approach to the market and how we add value to the supply chain whilst working with all stakeholders”. TM: And you’ve integrated own fleet and third party logistics partnerships? FW: "I am delighted that as an organisation we continue to operate an integrated model which sees 100

Fred Worle Brenntag-owned trucks operating around the UK & Ireland. These support our bulk liquid chemicals business, both directly to customers and in terms of servicing our own distribution sites, general packed goods distribution, and 24-hour internal trunking. We continue to invest in the fleet and logistics to be able to service and continue to grow our business. For instance, we've recently signed the lease for 18 new HGV units. Built-in flexibility allows us to address customers increasing need for short-term ordering and reduced shipment size. In addition, we have strategic alliances (on a working day there are around 100 third party and subcontract vehicles working on our behalf, supporting our own core fleet activities) with third party logistics providers who share our core aspirations around safety and service. This means we are in control of our own destiny with regards to ensuring our customers receive a service of the highest quality where safety and value for money are givens”. TM: The focus on quality and industry accreditations seems particularly important to you. FW: “As well as focusing on the physical infrastructure, we also recognise the importance of ensuring that our procedures are robust in the first instance and rigorously tested and audited. We have always been very proactive in terms of formal validation of safety and quality principles. Internally we have developed a comprehensive Supplier Approval System (SAPRO) requiring mandatory food certification, audit reports, production details and product testing for food additives and ingredients supplied via the Brenntag network in Europe. In addition to such high level of internal scrutiny,

we recognise the requirements and the benefits of third party verification relating to our infrastructure and services. For instance, by the end of 2016, we intend on completing the British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification and FEMAS accreditation across 100% of Brenntag UK & Ireland distribution and blending sites. TM: What about the importance of safety as a core principle and at the absolute heart of Brenntag organisation in the UK & Ireland and globally? FW: “Health & safety and environmental protection are all paramount for Brenntag. If it cannot be done safely, Brenntag will not undertake it. Safety is our number 1 priority. Focus on behavioural based safety and creating an open culture where near-miss reporting has become second nature have already delivered a significant reduction in accidents and incidents. We work closely with the regulators and welcome their input to ensure that all Brenntag sites, including our COMAH and upper-tier COMAH sites operate to the very highest environmental and safety standards". TM: And finally, how about the importance of safety in transportation? FW: “As part of the ongoing commitment to safety, Brenntag has invested at enhanced levels in terms of its in-house core transport fleet. We have seen significant advantages in terms of safety from investments in vehicle telematics, on-board camera units and enhancements to the specifications for example vehicle tail lifts, materials handling and load security”. D Turner & Son Machine Removals Offer Unique Turnkey Solutions
Experts in Machinery Relocation I
ntroducing D Turner & Son Machinery Removals – experts in machinery relocation, first founded more than 50 years ago. First established in 1965 by David Turner, the Lancashire company became D Turner & Son after current Director, Lee Turner was born. After realising there was a market for moving heavy machinery, David started his own business. Winching machines onto the back of vehicles, David purchased his first lorry mounted crane vehicle in the 1970s, making the job more efficient.
48
Lee Turner joined his father in 1992 and developed a wide range of skills to compliment the business. In 2000, Lee started to play a major part within the business and has proved influential in growing D Turner & Son into what it is today. Lee also quickly realised that the company would have to diversify in order to compete within a highly competitive market. Now offering a ‘turn-key’ service, as Lee likes to call it, D Turner & Son have just invested in a 400tonne hydraulic gantry for heavy lifting.

due to their varied and expert fleet of vehicles. Operating a 1 driver 1 vehicle system, Lee commented, “We’ve 10 large vehicles - 5 artics and 5 rigid’s. We keep saying we’re not going to get any bigger and then we buy another. We’ve just bought 3 new trucks, we’ve got 2 or 3 new trailers, and we’ve just gone into the low loader sector. My father went for Scania in the 90s but over the last few years we’ve looked at the market and the DAF proves more affordable, looks nice and the drivers are pleased with them. Fuel economy’s really good, it seems to be a fantastic investment. In Scania’s defence, we’ve got a ‘96 Scania which still runs as good as it did”. Already RHA members and FORS Bronze accredited, D Turner & Son are expecting the FORS Silver award in the next 2-3 months which would be received to some degree of importance with more and more London sites requiring the Silver award. With this, all HGV drivers have completed their ‘Bike Awareness’ CPC module; a requirement from FORS to obtain Silver. As an already diversified and ambitious company, D Turner & Son will like to keep building on their current Heywood site while upholding their underline industry quality standards. Having said that, the machinery relocation experts are excited to build on 2 new major contracts with American companies having being recommended by a wellrecognised organisation within the UK.. Predominantly operating within Devon and Cornwall, the organisation do move into Somerset periodically and he been as far afield as central London due to the specialist equipment that the firm maintain. James also tells us of how Clear-Flow Ltd are tapping into a large market for Leachate removal- the water runoff on landfill sites.

James said, “Predominantly the tanker fleet is used for nonhazardous waste, mostly sewage of varying types. It could be domestic septic tank type effluent, it could be cake type sludge from a sewage treatment works but of course, the types of vehicle we run have lots of applications so you might be emptying swimming pools or dirty water from building sites or process effluent from food production”. With a range of Euro 5 and 6 primarily DAF and Scania vehicles, Clear-Flow Ltd generally welcome a new vehicle onto the fleet every 6 weeks to 2 months. Ranging from 7 and a half to 32 tonne, the organisation are also ready to add 3 more Euro 6 vehicles to the fleet in the next 2 months and hope to be fully Euro 6 by the end of 2017. we moved into lorries in 1997 when we acquired our first Scania 3 series and built a specialist vacuum tanker on the chassis and really the growth of the company sprung from that because more lorries followed very rapidly to the point where we now have some 60 vehicles in total. I now run the company with my younger brother Tim Hustler, who is Commercial Director'', says James. The present day Clear-Flow is a company that works diligently and expertly in finding the right markets to branch out into, and as such can operate within a number of different industry sectors. a company, health and safety play a huge part as the railway demands are high and the drivers are all qualified to operate these various items of specialised plant. We strive to ensure we deliver all the plant as requested, to ensure we give the best possible service to the railway network. Campbell demands the best from his drivers and the lorries to ensure that we can fulfil our client’s requirement.” Duncan Plant Hire was recently proud to support international architect, Charles Jenks, in the redevelopment of an old open cast mine into a landform sculpture. The major land restoration and art project, Crawick Multiverse, is now open to public access as an environmental landscape- proving an exceptional feat for the Scottish company. Talking about the downturn within the British economy, Davie commented, “The open cast mining closure had a devastating impact on the business. We had to regroup the resources and make a lot of very heartfelt and hard choices with the workforce and fleet and start moving into different areas of the industry such as wind farms and road upgrades. Also, we entered the rail haulage in a different way- altering low loaders to take the rail trailers and be more involved with the contractors”. Now in full charge of operations following the passing of his late father John, Campbell Duncan is determined to keep the company held in high esteem and push the company forward in the correct manner when suitable.

ery much a family business, Duncan Plant Hire has developed into one of Scotland’s largest independent plant hire companies. First founded in 1971 by the late John Duncan, Duncan Plant Hire focus on the open cast, construction, agricultural and landscaping industries and operate 6 trucks in going above and beyond to offer an expert service. Generally carrying rail equipment, the business has the scope to transport anything within the laws. Duncan Plant Hire originally operated with a 3cx JCB which was quickly followed by a Hymac 360 exc purchased at the Ayr show. This soon generated a snowball effect which in turn led to larger growth volumes for the company who have been expanding ever since. The firm occupied their first lorry in 2006, a Volvo FH, to start shifting plant, and after progressing towards railway

work, that soon paved the way for the arrival for more lorries and low loaders. The organisation’s current fleet includes 6 trucks- including 4 Scania V8 Tag Axle’s, 1 Volvo FH500 and a new FH750. Duncan Plant Hire also like to trace the destination of all their lorries and do so using Navman which provides real-time data and fleet performance information. Also, the backbone of the company’s haulage fleet workload comes from their work on railways. Working for the majority of railway plant companies in Scotland (including QTS Rail, AB200 Rail, Story Rail and SES Engineering), the work is highly intensive due to the specialised plant, and the anti-social working hours and locations make for a highly skilled job.
