Multimodal 2015
UK and Ireland’s leading transport and supply chain event
M
ultimodal 2015, the UK and Ireland’s biggest logistics and transport exhibition, is preparing for record attendance this year as thousands of supply chain professionals come together for three days of networking, new business opportunities, and workshop debates. Omnichannel challenges, measuring your carbon footprint, and reducing warehouse costs are just three of the subjects topping the seminar agenda at the UK and Ireland’s leading transport and supply chain event, which takes place from the 28th to the 30th April 2015, at the Birmingham NEC. Over 8,000 professionals from across the logistics and transport industry are expected to visit more than 300 supply chain exhibitors,

including Malcolm Logistics, Axis Fleet Management, and International Warehousing and Transport (IWT), at the free-to-attend event. “Multimodal brings supply chain decision makers together with innovators and suppliers with the right experience,” said Robert Jervis, Multimodal Director. “We are looking forward to a lively three days of networking and business opportunities for visitors and exhibitors, as well as some informative debate and useful training sessions. “The show is a unique opportunity for logistics buyers to meet specialist suppliers and touch base with existing contacts. “It is a must-attend event for those who want to find new ways of running efficient supply chains, and network with their peers.” Multimodal, which is in its eighth year, has once more teamed up with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to put together a program of workshops looking at how to run slicker, more compliant supply chains. Sixty-four industry thought leaders from blue chip companies including Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, and Lafarge Tarmac will take part in 22 sessions, including panel debates, workshops, and seminars tackling the big issues, looking at new legislation, and showcasing innovative products and ideas. The CILT’s Omnichannel panel on the 28th of April will look at how supply chains can adapt to new consumer demands, as well as debating challenges and solutions, including an examination of environmental issues and an introduction to drones. Modal shift to rail and water will feature on the FTA’s seminar day on the 29th, including input from Sainsbury’s and

the Co-operative speaking about the solutions that have worked for them, as well as a session on measuring your carbon footprint. A seminar on cutting emissions in our cities, chaired by Gasrec on the 28th of April, will take a look at options and solutions, bringing shippers together with providers to debate the issues, whilst on the 28th of April, enVista will share insight on inventory optimization. Insentivising 3PLS using Key Performance Indicators as motivators will be the subject of a masterclass by Excello Law’s Nigel Kotani on the 30th April. Innovations being showcased during the seminars will include a new 100% recyclable lightweight pallet made by the Alternative Pallet Company, and capable of lifting a tonne of product with a stacking strength of seven tonnes. The session will feature a live demo of a pallet in action. On the exhibition floor, The UK Warehouse Association will host its own pavilion, which will feature companies including The Rack Group, Flexi, and Spaciotempo amongst others. The Shippers’ Village will once again give freight buyers a private space to meet logistics suppliers. Retailers using the service this year include Miller Brands, Sears, Tata Steel, Jaguar Land Rover, and Dunelm Mill. New for this year’s show are a series of special achievement awards, which will

be handed out at the VIP Gala Dinner and Awards evening, hosted by Simon Weston at the National Motorcycle Museum on the 28th of April. Sponsored by DSV, The Axis Group, Women in Logistics, the FTA and the CILT, the awards will celebrate excellence across the industry. Categories include Contribution to Multimodal Development and Contribution to Environmental Sustainability as well as Personality and Exhibitor of the year. For the first time The Woman of the Year will be recognised along with the Young Logistics Professional of the Year. The Young Professional Finalist will be selected by a panel of judges including Rob Jervis, Enno Osinga, vice chairman of The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) and Garry Mansell Chief Executive Officer of Trade Extensions. “We are committed to helping our industry to find and encourage the next generation of leaders,” said Jervis. “We think it is important to recognise talent and hard work, and shine a light on the great career opportunities on offer in transport and logistics.” Trade Extensions will once again be hosting supply chain simulation sessions using the MIT “beer game’. “The sessions are informal and participants will both learn and be

Discover the Port of Ramsgate Port of Ramsgate is one of the largest municipally-owned commercial ports in the UK. If you have a business that wants to grow, then welcome to the Port with a future.
It’s perfect for a range of businesses The Port of Ramsgate is firmly established as a support centre for the offshore wind industry, servicing 305 turbines (soon to be 320) and major customers within this sector include Dong, Eon, Masdar (London Array), Vattenfall (Thanet Offshore Wind and Kentish Flats), Vestas and Siemens Wind Power. The port also operates an aggregates facility in partnership with Brett Aggregates, and until recently, a ferry service from our three RoRo linkspans and shore infrastructure. Port of Ramsgate is the ideal home for business: • for commercial shipping, including RoRo operations - short sea journey times match, or beat, Ramsgate’s competitors; • for offshore renewables, Ramsgate’s dedicated facilities and strategic location provide unrivalled support for major North Sea and English Channel developments, and opportunities for onshore supply chain businesses; • for cruise ships, Thanet and Kent’s tourist hinterland – including London and Canterbury – is within easy reach by road or rail.

MEET SID: FuEl ChaMpIon Sid was never a fan of these new fangled devices, but even he could work out what his message from the boss meant. Transport Manager of the month once again! Under budget & best fuel consumption by a mile.
U came out top again M8! Best performing depot. N1!
We asked Sid what was his secret: “Steertrak. We put in a maintenance program to keep all the wheels straight” And what difference did it make? “Apart from my pay rise, my MPG improved immediately”. Many fleets are still missing this fuel saving opportunity because they still think of wheel alignment as just “Tracking”. Steertrak take a whole vehicle approach assessing all aspects of steering and axles, operational use and maintenance. It’s a case of straight wheels, straight driving and savings straight to the bottom line.

Axis Fleet Management - Innovation as standard
Operating from Oxford, Axis FML serves over 100 clients with over 2,700 assets, including trucks, trailers, rigids and vans and counts 30 of the top 100 Logistics companies in the UK as customers. We take time to understand your business needs and ensure we offer exactly the right solution. We are manufacturer agnostic and will always propose the most appropriate solution. As keen innovators we offer much more than just a standard truck – recommending the latest technology and adjustable air kits for more fuel efficient operations and a lower total cost of ownership, to help operators interpret telematics reports to improve driver behaviour, save fuel and reduce repair and maintenance costs.

Keeping the Transport Industry spinning on its Axis Axis FML, where ‘innovation as standard’ helps power customer’s success
A
xis has grown and evolved over the last 15 years. As part of the Axis Intermodal Group, Axis manages over 15,000 transport assets worldwide and specialises in the contract hire and leasing of Trucks and Trailers serving hundreds of leading customers. In the UK, its focus is on offering clients choice, flexibility and value to help them meet the demands of their customers across all logistics sectors. What sets Axis apart is its ability to reduce the total cost of ownership involved in managing diverse and complex fleets and by being innovative in the added value services that distinguish leading providers. By recognising that customers have a choice, Axis believes that it is only by genuinely understanding and anticipating the needs of customers that the company can succeed.
Axis is delighted to be exhibiting at the Multimodal Show this year and sponsoring the Awards dinner on 28th April. This marks a deliberate strategy to take on a more leading role in the industry and provide a platform to help get the Axis message out. With many new innovations to talk about, Axis has been a little overwhelmed by the positive response so far. After some deliberation, Axis has chosen a new strapline of ‘Innovation as Standard’, as Axis genuinely believes that it has something to offer the sector and up to now, may have been a little quiet about its capabilities.
The company is proud of the relationships that is has established within the industry, with both manufacturer partners and of course clients. No day is ever the same and the pace of change relentless. However, Axis is optimistic about the growth potential for the sector and itself.
Managing Director David Potter recognises that Axis can only thrive when the industry itself is doing well, and that some segments of the sector have struggled in recent years. However, by partnering with smart vehicle manufacturers and working with intelligent clients, Axis has seen its business grow by 30% year on year over the last few years by staying focussed on customer needs. Axis also keeps abreast of the latest developments and by consistently delivering the best service at a fair price that represents fantastic value.
Currently, Axis has over 2,700 assets on its books and expects t that the substantial growth of the last few years will continue. The company takes a long term view of the industry and foresees continued growth for smart operators like Axis who specialise in providing customers with the widest choice and quality of transport assets, wrapped up in great service, with an innovative approach to fleet management and flexible terms. Axis FML focuses on the UK market but know that many of its customers send vehicles across Europe and beyond. To date the company is proud to serve over 100 customers ranging from DHL, Norbert Dentressangle at one end to smart but smaller operators such as Masters Logistics or Designer Contracts. Whoever they are, all receive a professional and well managed fleet solution tailored around their specific needs. Any logistics provider running a fleet of 10 or more should find the Axis proposition attractive and of course Axis welcome all enquiries from new customers. The business believes it is important to support the sector through membership of trade bodies and is actively campaigning for changes that will benefit its customers. One such area is environment and sustainability. Axis is keenly aware that the sector has a huge amount to offer the wider economy and that many recent initiatives are not properly understood by the media and wider public. Axis aims to help publicise the industry story well, and also the benefits of lower fuel consumption, emissions and enhanced road safety so that they are better appreciated. This should then influence the media and public to be more supportive of how the logistics sector has a vital role to play in driving a successful economy.
In particular, Axis would like to highlight a strong environmental message as part of its service: largely driven by the fuel economy benefits of using modern equipment, Predictive Cruise Control (PCC), smart telematics and driver safety.
Axis assets are equipped with all the latest technology you would expect - one of the more recent innovations is the design and installation of streamlined aerodynamic trailers that Axis have registered under the name ‘Axis Aircutter’. Test show it makes a real difference to fleet running costs through improved fuel efficiency. Axis offers the “Hatcher” air management systems and their electronic self-adjusting air deflector kits. The business has deep relationships with many partners and has obtained consistently good feedback from our customers who want to help shape future development priorities for manufacturers. Often this means Axis is at the forefront of new innovations such as Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) which is now being offered by its leading partners as an added value feature that can drive up to 5% reduction in fuel consumption and costs. With fuel representing around 40% of Total Cost of Ownership, this equates to a 2% margin improvement that converts straight to profit. Axis has received positive client feedback of its services, with customer customers commenting on the range, flexibility quality and value of the options Axis proposes. Flexibility in terms of the payment options, whether it be contract hire, finance lease or rental. Axis recognises that many logistics providers need to mix and match their fleet to suit the specific needs of the diverse contracts they run on behalf
of their customers. By taking a flexible approach, it can nearly always propose an attractive solution to drive value for them. While Axis may not bend over backwards, it will work incredibly hard to ensure they receive the service and choice they need. Quality is vitally important – and underpins everything Axis does. First, by partnering with trusted manufacturers, Axis is able to offer high quality assets; all maintained through main dealer networks and a nationwide selection of trusted maintenance partners. Doing this well minimises overall service costs as well as ensuring the correct maintenance and service schedules are followed. This reduces down time and of course enhances end of term residual value – both of which lower Total Cost of Ownership. Running a quality fleet also makes the operator better able to recruit and retain professional drivers – and with the current driver shortage, hiring costs can also see a reduction. Value is of course essential as a competitive price is a rather obvious requirement. Axis adds value through extra services such as Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) or smart analytics, tailored reports and actionable recommendations based on smart telemetry applications. Whatever data is collated, it is HOW it is analysed and more importantly actioned that real value can be achieved. From simple but effective EcoStyle reports, to league tables of driver performance, our expertise facilitates intelligent and constructive discussions to be held with drivers. This helps drivers learn and improve their productivity, be safer for them and other road users and contributes to lower running costs. Axis capability to support a Total Fleet Management solution assures compliance to all aspects of Operators license and maintenance requirements. This can be a real headache for some operators and knowing this vital aspect of fleet management is taken care of, allows smart Fleet Managers to focus on other areas critical to their business. After celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2014, Axis is anticipating achieving a major milestone of 3,000 assets being managed in 2015 and look forward to further progress over the coming years. Axis is optimistic about the future and based on the recent past, have confidence about the growth potential for the sector and their place in it. The sector itself has recovered well and Axis expects to win market share by serving existing customers with a larger share of their business and being actively considered by new customers who see the value in partnering with a smart Fleet Management Provider.
