IVECO and Aerodyne give Stralis sleek new look for double deck missions IVECO’s engineering division has teamed up with fuel-saving specialist Aerodyne to jointly develop a new range of air management kits to reduce drag when Stralis tractor units are operating with tall trailers. Available to order via the IVECO dealer network, the air kit is available in two sizes and can be adjusted telescopically, with the smaller of the two systems designed for trailers between 4.08m and 4.28m tall, and a second larger kit for trailers between 4.22m and 4.7m. The air kits have been developed by Aerodyne using 3D CAD design software and CNC Machining technology, and built at Aerodyne’s Bourne headquarters in Lincolnshire. They are made from GRP and come as standard in white, but can be supplied in other colours to suit a customer’s own livery. Stuart Webster, IVECO UK & ROI Business Director, says: “As increasing numbers of fleets turn to double deck trailers to maximise load fill, finding ways to minimise aerodynamic drag becomes

10

even more important. Our engineers have worked closely with Aerodyne to equip Stralis with the ultimate cab-to-trailer aerodynamic package when operating with very tall trailers.”

The Aerodyne air kits have been assigned official IVECO part numbers and can be ordered via the IVECO dealer network on new vehicles, and for fitment to existing models.

Calculations carried out with a Stralis plated at 44 tonnes (but typically partladen) with a 4.6m double-deck trailer showed that aerodynamic drag becomes the number one factor affecting fuel consumption at just 50mph. With the Aerodyne air kit fitted, it is estimated that the aerodynamic drag co-efficient could be reduced by as much as 25 per cent – helping to significantly improve fuel efficiency.

They are suitable for fitment to all tractor units with a Stralis Hi-Way cab, including IVECO’s two ‘TCO2 champions’, the flagship New Stralis XP and natural gaspowered New Stralis NP models. www.iveco.com

Ryan Kingston, Managing Director of Aerodyne, explains: “In a typical operation, the return on investment for the air kit could be less than six months, plus it has the potential to save nearly 10 tonnes of CO2 every year, through improved fuel efficiency. If an operator is regularly running with double deck or very tall trailers, that’s a convincing argument. We’re expecting significant interest from Stralis operators.”

Howard Tenens teams up with TruTac and CMS to ‘raise the compliance bar’ Howard Tenens, the leading logistics specialists are investing in the latest compliance tools and technology to future proof their business. Their logistics division is working with TruTac and CMS Supatrak to implement a programme of upgrades, focussed on delivering efficiency improvements for driver and vehicle management. These include combined remote vehicle downloading and telematics for instant analysis of driver and vehicle tacho data, tighter control over agency drivers and increased compliance. Using the market-proven and aptlynamed software programme, TruControl – from transport software experts TruTac – with driver behaviour monitoring and live tachograph downloading via CMS Supatrak, Howard Tenens no longer need to manually download vehicle and driver information. Instead, they can access full data on their 400-strong, national fleet at the ‘touch of a button’. “The remote downloading system facilitated by TruTac and CMS,” explains

National Fleet & Compliance Manager, Richard Philpotts, “provides a wealth of real-time, accurate information to ensure that no individual cases slip through the net and particularly so regarding agency drivers. In turn, this adds up to greater efficiency and truly effective compliance control.”From any chosen location, Howard Tenens can analyse specific and current tachograph data to monitor driver performance and identify infringements, thereby eliminating potential risks. Additionally, they can automatically calculate optimum vehicle routing, identify valuable information such as ‘missing miles’ and improve driver behaviours including accident reduction. “We worked closely with Howard Tenens from the start” says Matthew Bright from CMS Supatrak, “our initial objective was to fully understand the nature and extent of their logistics operation. Only then, could we develop a telematics solution to maximise vehicle utilisation and exactly match their needs.” Meanwhile, TruTac has provided a bespoke training package, tailored to the

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

Howard Tenens operation, focusing on specific KPI’s and reports. The standard of which, says Richard Philpotts, “has been excellent from start to finish and is already delivering benefits.” “Although our software packages are easy to use,” says TruTac’s Operations and Marketing Director Jemma James, “we recognise the importance of providing regular training and updates. I’m delighted to say that the Howard Tenens training philosophy goes a long way to keeping their team ‘on-message’ and on top of the entire compliance and control process.” Howard Tenens is a global operation and one of the largest privately-owned logistics companies in the UK. They have 3PL contracts in most sectors, including retail, automotive, food and beverages. “With such diverse logistics activities to oversee,” concludes Richard Philpotts “we rely on round-the-clock accuracy to deliver an efficient and compliant service. The combination of TruTac and CMS Supatrak keeps us ahead of the game and raises the compliance bar!”

Michelin opens new european distribution centre in stoke-on-trent Michelin has invested more than £10m in a major upgrade of its Stoke-on-Trent based logistics operation, opening a new European Distribution Centre (EDC). The 53,500m² facility will also host a National Distribution Centre (NDC) for ATS Euromaster. Combined, the two sites have the capacity to handle more than 5 million tyres annually for the UK and Irish markets. To meet this increased demand, Michelin has doubled its logistics team to about 150 members of staff, who are now responsible for handling the additional 2 million annual tyre movements required for ATS Euromaster’s nationwide operations. The EDC has been re-developed with 26 loading bays which can be used simultaneously around the clock, and Michelin has also used the upgrade as an opportunity to install the latest generation fire protection system, with 5,000 sprinkler heads to ensure maximum safety. Richard Whitehurst, service to customer manager at Michelin Tyre, says: “The transformation of our logistics operation will allow us to improve service levels to dealer partners and manufacturers, by reducing delivery times and ensuring greater product availability. “This is a game-changing development for Michelin; the decision to share

16

facilities with ATS Euromaster brings natural synergies, and focuses around having one logistical team with one shared vision, to support the next steps of both organisations’ growth.” Peter Tye, Business Support Director at ATS Euromaster, comments: “Our new NDC is a pilot project for the Euromaster Group, increasing our flexibility and enabling us to get the right products to the right centres faster than ever before.” The launch of the new facility has been more than two years in the planning, and involved close partnership working on new IT systems and interfaces between Michelin and ATS Euromaster, together with logistics partners Great Bear and Teliae. Additional investment Alongside the improvements in logistics, Michelin has marked its 90th anniversary of manufacturing in Stoke-on-Trent with the creation of a new Customer Service Division with responsibility for Northern Europe, comprising the UK, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden. This team is now actively processing around €2m worth of orders per day. Michelin has also continued to invest heavily in its retread manufacturing operation, which is now the most modern Michelin retread plant in Europe, with the ability to produce Michelin Remix and Encore retread tyres on the same

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

production line. Solvent consumption in the manufacturing process has been reduced by 90 per cent, and energy consumption has been optimised following a series of projects in conjunction with supplier EON. Jonathan Wright, factory manager at the Campbell Road plant, adds: “We’ve invested more than £25m in our Campbell Road operations over the last eight years. We have been making tyres in North Staffordshire since 1927, and these projects demonstrate our continued long-term commitment to the area and to the communities in which we operate. “Whilst this has seen significant building and development work locally, the investment runs much deeper than purely infrastructure. From the outset, we have been committed to developing and empowering our staff to be able to deliver beyond our customers’ expectations – and the buy-in and feedback from our teams along this journey has been fantastic.” The next part of the development is the commissioning of a new 12,000m² warehouse being built alongside the retread plant, for storing truck and bus tyre casings ahead of processing. Upon completion, it will improve the local landscape and ensure the retread plant is best positioned to support increasing production levels.

Daisy-mae’s delight… A STAY in hospital led to a lorry load of fun for a poorly North East youngster – after she scooped top prize in a competition. Nine-year-old Daisy-Mae Fairs, from Jarrow, was being treated for hypermobility syndrome at Newcastle’s Great North Children’s Hospital when she heard about a competition to name an 18-tonne truck. The vehicle is the latest addition to the fleet at Cramlingtonbased Moody Logistics and Storage, with most vehicles having names such as Geordie Princess and Geordie Sprinter. As the hospital is Moody’s nominated charity for 2017, it decided to give youngsters the chance to choose its name – with Daisy-Mae’s suggestion of Geordie Delight overtaking all other entries. And, to celebrate her win, the youngster - with mum Wendy and dad Graeme - paid a VIP visit to Moody’s to join the driver in the cab as Geordie Delight took to the road. “Because of her condition, Daisy-Mae is in constant pain,” said Wendy. “She’s also quite a quiet girl and to win this competition has been marvellous for her. “She’s overjoyed and it’s great to see the name she chose, on the side of the truck. Moody Logistics and Storage managing director, Caroline Moody, said the family-owned firm had received a huge number of entries to the competition, “but we all agreed that Geordie Delight was the right name,” she said.

“Our trucks are the lifeblood of the business and not only are we thrilled to be adding to the fleet but Daisy-Mae has made it extra special. We’ll always think of it as her truck.” For further information about Moody Logistics and Haulage, contact 01670 710061 or visit www.moodylogistics.co.uk

Sch to handle renault vehicles moving through port of southampton Leading roll-on/roll-off cargo handlers Southampton Cargo Handling (SCH) have secured the stevedoring contract to handle all Renault vehicles being shipped through the Port of Southampton. The move follows the success of Euro Marine Logistics (EML), a joint venture project between Mitsui OSK Lines and Hoegh Autoliners, in winning the shipping contract for some 60,000 Renault vehicles a year that pass through Southampton. EML is making calls every four days in the port after loading vehicles in France and Spain. SCH will also be responsible for receiving and

loading EML cargoes being exported through Southampton. The contract strengthens SCH’s position as a leading handler of ro-ro cargoes in Southampton, having loaded and discharged more than 200,000 units last year. The company is already on course to surpass that total in 2017. SCH Director Lee Davis explained: “Our expertise in handling ro-ro cargoes has enabled us to increase the volumes that we handle through Southampton considerably, helping the port’s ro-ro business to grow at the same time as expanding our own business. The Renault business is expected to add nearly 30 per cent to our annual volumes.”

System group apprentice wins top prize at industry awards

Christina Wilcox with System Group’s Colin Gordon (left) and David Crawford

A System Group apprentice working for CEMEX UK is on the road to success after scooping a top prize at the Talent in Logistics Awards, reflecting her commitment to training as she pursues a career as a driver at one of the UK’s leading suppliers of building materials. Twenty-two-year-old Christina Wilcox, who’s the first female apprentice and driver at CEMEX UK’s Rugby cement plant in the Midlands, won the coveted Apprentice of the Year following her Level 3 Driving Goods Vehicles Apprenticeship, delivered by System Group. She secured her success after demonstrating her proficiency driving and delivering 44 tonne bulk cement tankers as part of a 90-strong driver workforce. The Talent in Logistics Awards recognises the skills and achievements of the people that keep the logistics sector, and the country, running, with the winners judged by a panel of industry leading experts. This includes representatives from the CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport), RHA (Road Haulage Association), FLTA (Fork Lift Truck Association), Women in Logistics and charity Transaid.

18

Christina’s achievement capped a night of success for System Group, which was also nominated in the Training Programme of the Year and Grand Finals of RTITB’s Forklift Operator of the Year categories. She said on receiving her award: “I was shocked but delighted to win the award both for myself and other young aspiring drivers. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the excellent apprenticeship scheme offered by CEMEX through System Group, which has been run for the last three years.” Christina hopes her success will inspire other young people to see a driving apprenticeship as a great way to learn a skilled trade while getting paid. Darren Cunningham, chief executive at System Group, which trains drivers for local and national logistics operators, said: “Christina’s hard work and dedication is truly commendable, so many congratulations to her. “She’s an inspiration and further endorses our focus on nurturing young talent and equipping them with them with the skills and confidence to meet the UK’s pressing need for trained drivers.”

Christina Wilcox with her trainer, Karl Langford

Billy Gomez, Christina’s trainer, added: “I’m pleased for the team surrounding her, who have supported her all the way to this point, and who I know will be overjoyed at her welldeserved success.” Christina is now looking forward to seeing more women drivers coming into the sector as she builds on her achievement through further training and professional development. CEMEX UK is a leading provider of aggregates, cement, ready-mixed concrete, concrete blocks and rail sleepers. Barrie Flitton, logistics operations manager who accompanied Christina to the awards, said: “It is a great achievement for Christina and the Rugby logistics team. It’s also for the work and commitment by CEMEX in developing young people and talent in the company.” System Group works with logistics and utility companies, military and government departments, local authorities, national corporations and small businesses as well as individuals and the self-employed. Customs Declaration Service not fit for Brexit purposes, says FTA Responding to the publication of the National Audit Office (NAO)’s report on the progress of the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) programme, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has raised serious concerns about the progress of the project, and its suitability to handle the anticipated levels of Customs declarations at British ports post-Brexit. FTA, the UK’s largest and most influential membership association in the logistics sector, has grave doubts that the new system, currently in development by HMRC, will be able to cope with the anticipated 255 million additional Customs declarations to be made at British ports each year when the UK leaves the European Union. “With only two months anticipated between the delivery of the CDS programme and the UK’s departure from the EU, it is imperative that all the potential problems have been ironed out in the system before implementation,”

says James Hookham, FTA’s deputy chief executive. “Without assurances that the rigorous stress tests recommended by the NAO have been undertaken, to ensure the Customs system can cope with the high volumes of traffic it will be handling, HMRC will be creating unnecessary uncertainty for British businesses, at a time stable trading conditions will be vital for our economy. “But there is no mention how exporters and importers, their agents and their carriers will be trained in time to make this a smooth transition to Keep Britain Trading. “It is irresponsible to suggest that a programme like CDS can be introduced overnight, and it is vital that the government and its negotiators do not leave business on a cliff edge, with no deal agreed at the UK’s point of departure from the EU. Britain’s economy needs a transitional period to ensure that Customs declarations can be moved to a

new handling system in a controlled and managed method. To do otherwise could be disastrous for the UK.” More than 180,000 businesses are expected to use the new CDS system to facilitate UK-EU trade. And as Hookham continues, HMRC needs to ensure that its implementation of the new programme is supported by the whole of government to smooth its introduction: “FTA’s members are wholeheartedly in support of the NAO’s call for HMRC to receive whatever support it needs from across government to ensure that the CDS system can be introduced on time and with the necessary capacity. Funding and resources need to be prioritised to speed up progress with the programme, alongside the development of a full scale contingency plan, to ensure that the UK’s logistics industry is not left high and dry by a failure to deliver the new Customs system on time.”

He was one of the 20th century’s greatest technological industrialists, and Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor company, and the man who championed mass production in the form of the assembly line, put collaboration at the very heart of his business model. “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success,” he once remarked. Quite then what Ford would have made of the myriad challenges facing the global freight business today - where hauliers must solve the complex conundrum of how to increase their economic footprint while lowering their carbon footfall is anyone’s guess. But one thing’s for sure – Ford’s prescient assertion holds the same resonance, power and significance today as it did when he first vocalised his ‘eureka moment’ some hundred years ago. Take the perennial balancing act performed by UK hauliers every single day, for example. In a highly competitive market – for many – not only is the line between profit and loss waferthin, but their already stretched operating models will now also need to absorb tough new toxin taxes, which are set to come into force in many of towns and cities in the next few years. However, with 96 per cent of UK commercial vehicles powered by diesel, many detractors believe that the new schemes unfairly penalise freight and logistics operators. Small and mid-sized fleets, in particular, may find it extremely challenging to fund ultra-low emission engine upgrades. Christopher Snelling, the FTA’s Head of National & Regional Policy, while not wishing to “exaggerate the efficacy and potency of such schemes, but also “the ease and scale at which such gains can be achieved” thinks, hypothetically at least, there could be an opportunity in the future for innovative freight exchange platforms to ease the burden of compliance through advanced collaboration. “In theory, a freight exchange platform, could alleviate some of that financial strain on industry by connecting members whose vehicles don’t conform to ULEZ regulations – in realtime - with those HGVs that do. “By matching the real-time location and availability of a Euro VI/6 HGV to that of an older vehicle, the haulier with - say a non-compliant Euro V/5 engine - could safely and

securely sub-contract the load to the HGV driver for the last few miles of the journey. “Not only would this mean that the operator saves in air quality taxes, but from an environmental perspective, those HGVs which meet stringent Euro 6 standards, are actually some of the cleanest conventionally-powered vehicles on the road. “There might also be a benefit from a payload maximisation and consolidation perspective. A large 18 tonne HGV for instance, might be able to save a smaller three-tonne truck several journeys.” Simon Bunegar, the VP of Business Development for the Transport Exchange Group, one of Europe’s largest platforms, whose 4,500 members collectively lowered their carbon footprint by 9,200 tonnes last year, is excited by the future potential of freight exchanges. Says Bunegar, “In a new data-driven age of freight, combining leading-edge technology with a culture of collaboration and agility is the key to ensure that our members continue to generate increased revenue and turnover, and in doing so, adopt more sustainable freight practices. By providing our members with a safe, reliable and secure platform to subcontract loads, frequently, we see members decommissioning older, heavy polluting diesel vehicles. The challenge for tomorrow is to ensure that we continue to be at the forefront of the data revolution that is currently sweeping the freight industry and provide our members with an opportunity to operate sustainably but profitably. We believe both are possible with collaboration.” And, no doubt Henry Ford, one of the great visionaries of his day, would have thought so too. 1.21 quotes from Henry Ford on Business, Leadership and Life http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikaandersen/2013/05/31/21quotes-from-henry-ford-on-business-leadership-andlife/#1b0b17193700 2.The Financial Times Diesel penalties would hit UK car jobs, industry head warns By Peter Campbell April 27, 2017 https://www.ft.com/content/81017b90-2b1c-11e7-bc4b5528796fe35c

Andover trailers designs unique drawbar solution for fm conway Infrastructure services company FM Conway has taken delivery of a specially designed centre-balanced drawbar trailer from Andover Trailers to support its growing road construction and maintenance operations. The unique trailer has been developed by Andover Trailers to help speed up the transport of FM Conway’s range of asphalt chip spreaders to site. Built by Tex Engineering, the chip spreaders are vital to FM Conway’s highway surfacing and maintenance operations. The spreaders are currently supplied with their own purposebuilt trailers which, due to a lack of powered braking, cannot be used on EU roads. In an extremely inefficient and costly process, FM Conway has previously had to load and secure each chip spreader, including its trailer, on to the back of a step frame for transport to site. John Tobin, Asset Manager at FM Conway, explains: “Moving our chip spreaders in the past has always been an arduous procedure that took up time, money and manpower. We’re always looking for new ways to improve the way we work and deliver efficiencies for customers so we asked the team at Andover Trailers to help us design a more suitable solution. “We’ve worked with Andover for the past 27 years so we knew that if we sent them the machine specs and challenged them to devise a more efficient means of transfer we wouldn’t be disappointed. As expected, they produced the goods and we now have a safe, fast way of transporting the spreaders to site, helping us to continue delivering great projects for our clients.” Andover Trailers’ design team were given the measurements for two different sized chip spreaders and access to one of the existing trailers to assist with the design process. From there, they developed a road-legal, nine-tonne tandem-axle drawbar trailer capable of carrying either of the two chip spreader variants. The finished product is equipped with Gigant axles on steelspring suspension and running on 235/75 R17.5 tyres. It features a full air braking system, LED lighting and aluminium loading ramps that allow loading and unloading from either side. The new trailer means either size of chip spreader can be now towed to site using the company’s Volvo FE320 4x2 rigid. This improvement in operational efficiency translates into significant cost savings for FM Conway and its customers, as the trailer will be in regular use on projects across London and the south east. Tobin concludes: “We’ve taken delivery of more than 20 trailers from Andover since we awarded them our first order in the 1990s, and currently have six of their step frames in the fleet. We know that everything they build is designed to last, and even though this is something a little different, we’re certain it will still be running 10 years from now.”

Transport strategy must deliver fully, says FTA The Freight Transport Association (FTA) – the country’s biggest transport trade body representing half the UK fleet - says the Government’s new transport investment plan is good news for the sector but more investment is needed to upgrade the road network. The policy, announced yesterday (4 July 2017), dedicates funds raised from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) to road improvements. The money can be used for major local authority roads as well as the Strategic Road Network but FTA says it cannot not be the sole solution to finance future road infrastructure projects. FTA’s Head of National and Regional Policy Christopher Snelling said: “FTA believes that the government focus on investing in roads that will deliver improved performance, economic growth and reduce bottlenecks is correct. Enhanced road infrastructure can only

make Britain’s logistics network and business dealings more efficient. “Major local authority roads form a crucial part of the road network so our members welcome the news that the new fund can be allocated to support a wider range of projects. However, this extension of use will undoubtedly mean greater calls on one pot of money, so the Government will need to support infrastructure investment beyond just that provided by VED.” The announcement focuses on road spending but FTA understands the approach affects all aspects of transport expenditure. Mr Snelling commented: “To help deliver the industrial and trading success the UK wants for the future, the Government needs to deliver a flexible transport network as a whole, not just

Christopher Snelling roads. This must mean continued investment in rail infrastructure and also the delivery of the expansion of Heathrow. It is welcome that these areas will also be addressed with this approach.”

2017 Hankook Golf Classic continues to support Transaid charity Hankook staff together with a selection of tyre retailers and Fleet Managers took to the golf course on the 29th June for the Hankook Golf Classic North which took place at Worsley Park Hotel & Country Club in Manchester. The event raised £395 for Transaid, an international charity who tackle poverty and disadvantage by building transport skills and knowledge in the developing world. Previously, Hankook has held one centrally located golf event each year, but this year sees two events taking place – the North at Worsley and a South which will be held at Hanbury Manor Hotel & Country Club in Hertfordshire in July. Despite the intermittent rain showers, the day was a great success with the winning team which included John Hinks from NRG Fleet Services, Alistair Martin from Stewartry Tyres, James France from Dexel Tyre Co and

Mark Mellon from Dexel Tyre Co. The individual winner was Dave Webster from G Brocklehurst Transport, with Steve Buckley from Buckley Transport coming second and Alan Payling from APT Tyres a respectable third. Other prize winners included Peter Housby from Bulmans Bulk Haulage for Nearest the Pin and Richard Midgley from Link Tyre Sales with Longest Drive. Ian Woofinden of NRG Fleet Services said “Thank you to all at Hankook for such a fantastic day and evening at the 2017 Hankook Classic North. The guys and I thoroughly enjoyed the golf and the course, and equally we all had a wonderfully enjoyable and entertaining evening. The effort that goes into organising such events is incredible, and often goes unnoticed, so a special thanks to Hankook for all the hard work and effort that went in to ensuring the day went so smoothly.” Brett Emerson, Sales Director at Hankook Tyre UK added “It was wonderful to witness

There are rising numbers of workers classed as self-employed contractors with no rights to sickness payments or holiday pay, the parliamentary work and pensions committee have asked for the status of people in the gig economy to be classed as a ‘worker’ rather than ‘self-employed’. The committee also questioned companies including Uber, Amazon, Hermes and Deliveroo that use self-employed workers widely. A report into the committee’s findings on Monday accuses companies of propagating a myth about self-employment and rebuffs their claims of providing flexibility for their workers. The committee criticised such arguments as fiction, highlighting that forcing people into self-employment as couriers, taxi drivers and other roles, rather than employing them, was depriving the state of badly needed tax revenues and creating an extra burden on the welfare system. Let our team of advisors talk you through the wrangles of selfemployed status V worker to ensure that your risk is minimised from any potential claim.

Nissan

Nissan Qashqai Europe's best selling urban crossover has received a design overhaul that draws strongly on customer feedback to give them exactly what they want from the Qashqai. Nissan launched this new, more refined revision at an event in Vienna, Austria on June 14. Transport Magazine was invited to put it through its paces on a specially designed route, showcasing the strengths and improvements that will increase its dominance in the UK market. Of course, the first thing that will catch the attention of drivers is the more muscular design. Nissan has looked to the more premium markets for inspiration, resulting in a contemporary exterior. This new look, a style Nissan calls 'Premium Dynamism', makes an impact from every angle. The most noticeable upgrades have been made at the front of the car, especially the new integrated front bumper that aligns more fluidly with the rest of the car. This allows it to make full use of the car's body colour and the visible plastic now has a more premium gloss finish. Nissan's latest incarnation of its iconic 'V-Motion' grille appears for the first time on the facelifted model, bringing it in line with all current generation models. It features bolder, more dynamic surrounds that sit wider than the previous generation, adding to its muscular presence. Nestled between it is Nissan's new flat badge that now houses the car's upgraded radar as

part of its Intelligent Emergency Brake on N-Connecta and above. A more traditionally contoured version sits proudly at the front of the lower models in the range. The new Qashqai also features 'boomerang' LED lights that serve as Daytime Running Lamps at the front of the main lamps at the rear. These signature additions further the premium and contemporary design of the market leading crossover. A 3D aerodynamic element has also been designed into the rear lens which reduces drag as Nissan strive to reduce running costs in every aspect of the Qashqai. In addition to the new lights at the rear, Nissan has also completely redesigned the bumper to bring it up to date with a contemporary and more premium feel. N-Connecta grades and above also feature satin silver inserts to highlight their higher position in the range. One last small but significant change to the bumper is that the parking sensors now sit flush within it. These small details represent the hundreds of hours that have been spent developing the best possible styling for today's market. Inside the cabin is where the premium upgrades are felt most in the Qashqai as that is where drivers and passengers spend most of the time with the car. This is due to Nissan focusing on a more driver oriented experience which has led to higher quality materials and refinement. A growing trend in the current car market is D-shaped steering wheels - the Qashqai has adopted this style for a more sporty look and easier entry and exit for the driver. The rim is also thicker for a more comfortable grip, while the spokes and central hub are smaller – providing improved instrument visibility. It also features new four-way controllers on the central

spokes to reduce 'eyes off the road' time. The materials across the rest of the cabin have been upgraded to further increase the premium feel. Some of them are small: the air vents and door handles have a more tactile finish, and some are larger: the seats are now monoform and feature an extended base and bolster shape for additional support. This combination of enhanced detailing and styling help place it in higher market areas and help it maintain its class leading position in the UK. Technology has also been a key focus for the Nissan team where it has again built on customer feedback to improve their offerings. DAB digital radio is now standard across the entire range in the UK and the NissanConnect touchscreen satnav features a smart new user interface that's more app-like in appearance. This makes navigation much more intuitive as everyone is familiar with that style of the interface on their phone. Nissan has also introduced new Intelligent Mobility technologies in the new Qashqai which has always been at the heart of showcasing and advancing technology in its cars. In Autumn, they will introduce ProPILOT, the first stage of the brand's journey towards autonomous driving. This technology will automate the mundane elements of driving, giving drivers more freedom. ProPILOT will control the steering, acceleration and braking during heavy traffic and high-speed cruising on highways. These functions will be automated through the use of Lane Keep Assist, Intelligent Cruise Control and Traffic Jam Pilot. Incredibly, this will all be activated from a single button on the Qashqai's steering wheel with information being provided on the combimeter.

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

For now, there are several pieces of technology that have been added to the Qashqai in the step towards automation: Rear Cross Traffic Alert reduces the risk of low-speed impacts when reversing out of a parking space by sensing approaching vehicles, giving the driver visual and audible warnings. The Intelligent Emergency Braking system has been upgraded with Pedestrian Recognition, including small children. This is achieved through a combination of a camera and an advanced radar system that also operates with the Blind Spot Warning system, covering a wider service area. Finally, Stand Still Assist is now offered on cars with a manual transmission, holding them in a stationary position for up to three minutes. It works at any angle, allowing drivers to take their foot off the brake which will reduce their fatigue. Nissan has successfully taken customer feedback into account and used it to directly improve the already class leading C-SUV, taking it even further ahead of its rivals. The new premium and contemporary design across the interior and exterior of the Qashqai culminate in a brand new grade, the Tekna+, affectionately referred to as the ultimate Qashqai. It features exclusive new premium kit as standard, from high-quality soft Nappa leather to electronically controlled four-way pneumatic lumbar support. Perhaps the most sought after standard feature is the new BOSE Premium eightspeaker system – featuring tweeters, a woofer, mid-range speakers and two subwoofers, all of which are finely tuned specifically for the new Qashqai.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider

Fiat 124 Spider

Fiat's iconic 1960's Spider is back, exactly 50 years after the original was launched in 1967. It has retained its legendary name, the 124 Spider and its looks closely resemble what you would imagine a modern interpretation would be. Of course, this history comes with high expectations for the 2017 version and die-hard fans will be even harsher of any faults Fiat has made. They've set a good foundation for a modern sports car by teaming up with Mazda for the underpinnings of the 124 Spider but how does this incarnation stack up? Exterior: One of the first things you'll notice about the 124 Spider is that the styling is much more aggressive than its Japanese counterpart. Taking influence from muscle cars, this model is obviously aimed at the American market as Fiat continues to make strives overseas. The lines of the body mirror that of its 60s sibling, with a flat boot lid that slightly flicks up to form a spoiler as it reaches the rear of the car. Classic large, bold headlights and a hexagonal grille adorn the front of the car, leading to the quintessential double dips in the bonnet. Fiat's flair for retro styling is also very apparent, surely bringing back memories of summertime in the days of old.

30

Interior: Inside, the cabin doesn't stray too far from the MX-5 it's based on and rightly so, as the interior on it is superb, providing one of the most comfortable driving experiences in a small sports car. Fiat has added its own special touches that better represent the 124 Spider's retro appeal. The instrument dial aperture is bubblier than its smooth counterpart and is reminiscent of the 500's cluster. The monotone plastic dashboard has been replaced with a two tone one - featuring leather on the bottom half. This leather matches that of the wrap around seats that offer maximum comfort and cradle you through every turn. Performance: Driving is excellent in all conditions, whether it’s popping to the shops or taking a long needed break in the country. The 124 Spider has a 140bhp turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine capable of reaching 62mph in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 134mph. As well as being impressively swift, it has relatively good fuel economy with a combined cycle achieving 44.1mpg with CO2 emissions of 148g/km. Handling is incredibly responsive and you fully feel the sporting pedigree of this car, mostly because of how well the Mazda MX-5 itself handles.

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

Technology: Technology in the 124 Spider is exactly what you'd expect from a new car in 2017. Mounted on top of the dashboard is a "state of the art" 7-inch touchscreen which features a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to link up your phone up and get going. The usual satellite navigation, DAB radio, Bluetooth, WiFi, USB and AUX inputs can be found when you explore its system. Perhaps unexpected is the fact that the 124 Spider has nine built-in speakers, an impressive amount for a sports car. Two headrest mounted Bose speakers are fitted to each seat which ensures high quality even when the roof is down. 50 years on, Fiat's late 60s icon has been reborn spectacularly with a new model that truly embodies the original's spirit. The 2017 124 Spider is everything you want from a compact sports car, offering speed, practicality and economy. At ÂŁ21,050 on the road, it sits at the perfect price point for a summer car to explore the countryside with the top down, feeling the cool air during a hot day. It takes the best parts about the MX-5 and adds the retro appeal that Fiat is well known for. Enthusiasts will be happy with this fantastic tribute to a piece of Italian motoring history.

Vauxhall Mokka X

2017 Vauxhall Mokka X Design Nav

Vauxhall introduced the Mokka in 2013 as its entry into the ever-growing compact SUV market. It was well received and gained over 500,000 sales in its first year of sale, putting it in the same space as its rivals at Renault, Nissan and Peugeot. Last year, it received a facelift and new title, now being known as the Mokka X. Exterior: The facelifted Mokka X addresses the cosmetic issues the marred the original model, with new bolder headlights, bumper front grille. These upgrades help pretty up the small SUV, giving it a more mature look, as well as bringing it in the line with its rivals. Otherwise, the exterior features all the design cues you'd expect from a crossover – plastic cladding, underbody skid plates and raised ride height. This places it somewhere between the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti, striking a balance between rugged and mature. Interior: Perhaps the biggest change in the latest model is the Mokka X's dashboard, that's completely redesigned. Its confusing cluster of buttons has been

replaced with Vauxhall's updated design as seen across their latest models. The cabin is comfortable to sit in, with the standard seats that have become the norm in modern cars. There's nothing too flashy, with basic hard plastics and small chrome highlights around the instruments and other elements. Thanks to the tall build of the Mokka X, there is plenty of leg room for all passengers which isn't normally seen in compact SUVs. Performance: A small 1.4-litre turbo engine powers the Mokka X, providing 140bhp that accelerates to 60 in 9.3 seconds. It feels sluggish in low revs as the engine is held back by the turbo which feels unnecessary on such a small engine. Handling is exactly what you'd expect from a compact SUV, making it equally as useful in the city as well as the open road. Fuel economy in the Mokka X could be more impressive as it only achieves 43.5mpg on a combined cycle as well as producing CO2 emissions of 152g/ km. The target market for this vehicle, small families, would probably be looking for something that provides much better figures.

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

Technology: Thanks to this being the Design Nav model, it is fitted with Vauxhall's Navi 900 IntelliLink satellite navigation system – featuring smartphone projection, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 7-inch touchscreen, AM/FM/ digital radio, Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in sockets. This is complemented by an adequate speaker system that provides enough entertainment for family trips. Vauxhall's excellent OnStar on board assistant comes as standard in this model and although it wasn't tested, it is highly commended by other users. In the crowded compact SUV market, the Mokka X does very little to stand out from its strong rivals. It’s no threat to the Nissan Qashqai or Jupe, the most popular vehicle in this sector. However, it does present itself as an alternative for those who want something a little different. It isn't too over the top and provides all the basic functions a modern driver requires as well as being very competitively priced. On the road, the Mokka X Design Nav comes in at £20,495 with the optional two-coat metallic paint which looks especially stunning in blue.

MERLIN ACADEMY APPRENTICESHIPS Hiring apprentices is a productive and effective way for businesses to grow their own talent by developing a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce. With the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy, many employers are looking for ways to maximise the return on their Levy. The Apprenticeship Levy came into force on 6th April 2017. Under the scheme, firms with a payroll of more than £3m are required to contribute the equivalent of 0.5% of their payroll into a pot from which apprenticeships are then funded.

Each employer will have a levy allowance of £15,000, this is not a cash payment. It works in a similar way to personal tax allowance and cannot be used to purchase apprenticeship training. The Apprenticeship Levy, if not spent, is taken back from employers after 24 months. BEVERLEY

Five years old this month, we’re excited to share with you some of our favourite memories throughout that period. Since our humble beginnings as a one-man band website, Transport Monthly has grown to become the largest publication for its sector, developing superb partnerships with trade shows, feature clients and advertisers along the way.

LIGHT HAULAG

E

Throughout this time, we have seen the transport and logistics sector grow and improve as one of the UK’s largest industries. However, although improvements to fuel efficiency and technology have advanced the industry even further, we have seen many companies close down - some of which were featured in our very first issues. Here are some of our most memorable moments throughout our five years of business.

Direct Sameday Services Ltd

East Midlands Company Offer a Range of Same Day Delivery Services Direct Sameday Services Look towards Brand New Fleet within the Next Two Years

D

irect Sameday Services Ltd has been operating from its headquarters on the outskirts of Nottingham since November 1999 and since then has grown to become one of the leading same day courier company’s for the East Midlands area. Founded by long-term friends, Ian Gleave and Paul Tomkinson, who had both been working for a competitor, the pair decided to set up their own courier firm. Friends since 14 years of age, Ian and Paul started out driving their own

38

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

respective Citroen Berlingo and Ford Transit vans and received 3 months’ worth of free rent on an office space from another friend. Ian said, “For the first two years, we didn’t take a penny out of the business. I was lucky that I had another wage that looked after me and Paul’s wife looked after him. We paid alternate telephone bills at the beginning”. The third person to join the organisation was another long term friend, who worked as a subcontractor – setting

the trend of acquiring many more staff drivers and subcontracted drivers. Things soon snowballed through organic growth and excellent customer recommendation and in 2010, Direct Sameday Services acquired their current premises on the outskirts of Nottingham. Direct Sameday Services (NW) Ltd also opened in 2007 and allowed the firm to extend their available services throughout Manchester and the North of England. The company currently runs an extensive and diversified fleet of 50 plus vehicles, ranging from small vans and sprinters to 44-tonne trucks, with a tail lift if required. However, over the next two to three years, every vehicle will be brand new. Ian continued, “We look at sprinters, Iveco’s and Volkswagen vehicles – all the four-metre vans and above. With Iveco, it was the price, the three-year unlimited mileage that we liked. We can also service them ourselves with the warranty still in place. Generally, four years is the maximum age that I will run a van for and eight years on a lorry. We’re just refreshing some 58 plate trucks now”. Ian also shared his take on the current driver shortage, admitting there is a shortage of van drivers and an even bigger shortage of flexible lorry drivers. Direct Sameday Services Ltd use Scotland’s In Transit for all of their planning requirements. “We’ve been using it for two years. They are more versatile in that we could go to them and tell them what spec we wanted from the system and they adapted their system to suit us. We wanted to be notified when somebody was on site and we also wanted electronic signature capturing – a month later all the updates had been made”, said Ian. For the short and long term future, the East Midlands firm will look to build on solid relationships with customers and suppliers and maintain a newer fleet of vehicles. Ian said, “My priority is not awards but keeping our customers happy and bending over backwards for them. Hopefully, we will get better technology in the vehicles and get more automatics to take the stress away from the drivers and carry on giving a good service to the people in Nottingham and Manchester”. Ian would like to thanks K&M Hauliers for their fantastic maintenance, storage, warehousing, transport and distribution services, which they will continue to use. Kenley Warehousing and Distribution

Kenley’s At the Forefront of The Storage Industry Kenley Warehousing and Distribution Realise the Importance of Good Customer Service

F

ounded in 1967 by Michael Kenlock, Kenley Warehousing and Distribution has gone from strength to strength, from their humble beginnings in a small back street lockup in Darwen, Lancashire to a fully modernised operation. A qualified mechanic, Michael had also been involved in transport from an early age. At this time, Michael was operating Kenley Motors, repairing vehicles for over eighteen years. The company soon began storing pallets for a nearby company, and as the number of pallets gradually grew, Kenley Warehousing and Distribution was born and the site of the old Darwen paper mill was acquired. Since then, Kenley’s have taken on a wide range of clients such as DS Smith Group, Graham & Brown and H.O.T and many customers from the 1980s are still with Kenley’s today. As of now, the firm is run by Andrew Walker and Lesley Walker (Mike’s daughter) - boasting in excess of 140,000 sq ft of storage space and a large fleet of general haulage vehicles. Andrew said, “I have been here for 34 years since leaving school. I started work as an apprentice mechanic. It’s still very much a family-run business and the level of commitment and dedication from our staff remains the same”. Kenley’s have specialised in warehousing for some 40 years, storing and distributing an extensive range of products. Their services include; short or long term storage in either shared or dedicated warehouses and palletised storage, amongst many other tailored options for something more technical or complicated. For example, the Lancashire organisation can receive goods (pre-palletised or as loose cartons) by container shipment which can be palletised at the point of receipt on their container bays. Additionally, Kenley’s facilities are open seven days a week and are protected by full CCTV surveillance. Their warehouses are also fully racked with barcoded locations, enabling accurate stock management to be provided. “Our warehouses have been purpose built and adapted to optimise space and facilitate stock

46

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

selection and rotation. The warehouse is now fully automated – all ours is run by a warehouse management system called Locate It – customers have online tracking and can put their own orders on via the web interface”, said Andrew. Kenley Warehousing and Distribution operate a modern fleet of vehicles, ranging from small express vans to 44-tonne articulated trucks. With around 30 vehicles, the company utilises 30 for general haulage work and the other 5 for a pallet network. However, two vehicles are also operated at night for the UPN (United Pallet Network) within the BB (Blackburn) postcode. Andrew continued, “We still have our own garage – we still maintain in-house all the trailers, forklift trucks, tractor units and delivery vehicles. Our fleet is predominantly MAN but we have one Volvo, a couple of DAF vehicles and one Scania for taking the trailers for MOT. For the general haulage vehicles, we try and take the first refusal on anything we’ve got going out of the building”. Kenley’s also have a variety of trailers, from standard curtainsiders to low-loader trailers for abnormal loads such as plant machinery. The firm is also able to carry loads from one kilo to 28,000 kilos.

Moreover, all vehicles are fitted with tracking devices which enable customers to track deliveries. Andrew commented, “The telematics on the trucks give us a decent idea of how the truck is performing. I’d like to think that technology has increased with the manufacturers to a point where a brand new truck can be paying for itself with its economic return on fuel”. In the future, Kenley Warehousing and Distribution would like to stay at the same size as they are right now with over 80 employees. Andrew added, “I couldn’t see Kenley’s being the next Eddie Stobart. It’s key to manage what we’ve got at the minute effectively – with Brexit, I don’t know whether the future is bleak or bright”. GLW Feeds

GLW Take Delivery of the UK's Very First 'Non-Tip' Bulk Blower Trailers Company Committed To Four Year Project

F

ounded in 1873 by George Llewellyn White, GLW Feeds was a trader of coal, feeds, fertilisers and goods for its first 100 years. However, in 1982 the decision was made to build a compound feed plant to manufacture and market a range of quality animal feed. As of today, GLW Feeds remains a familyrun business and is now managed by George Llewellyn White (grandson of his namesake founder). As one of the UK’s largest independent livestock and speciality feed manufacturers (producing 280,000 tonnes a year of compounds and blends), GLW operates from two sites in Leicestershire – Lindum Mill for compound feed manufacturing and also a blending plant in Melton Mowbray.

48

The team of approximately 110 staff are also well equipped to sell moist and dry straight feeds with minerals, fats, milk powders, silage additives and cereal seeds too. Transport Manager, Neale Jones said, “We operate within the agriculture and animal feed manufacture sectors of the industry. In 2016, we opened a new straights trading office in Wetherby, Yorkshire – enhancing our on-farm offering of straights, co-products and alternative feed sales”. Using an operator’s license and UFAS registration, the firm operates a mixed fleet of animal feed bulk blowers, tridems and articulated and curtainsided vehicles (all either Euro 5 or 6) – 26 of which are Volvo.

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

Neale continued, “We currently update four or five per year – all vehicles have full factory fitted telematics/tracking systems and forward facing cameras. On average, we use three sub-contracted drivers per week”. GLW Feeds always address health and safety as a matter of absolute priority. As such, the senior management team is extremely proactive and the company takes MORR (the Management of Occupational Road Risk) very seriously to ensure the safety of drivers. More so, the organisation also operates under an environmental agency permit and has an environmental management system. They also adhere to all governmental regulations including

emissions to air, water, noise, and dust and energy use. Over the last 12 months, GLW has undergone constant appraisal of new technologies, nutritional research and transport innovation in preparation for their five-year plan. Neale Said, “Despite the recession and political turmoil, GLW Feeds Ltd has continued to grow, with 2017 marking our busiest year yet. With this in mind, we have committed to a four-year project in four phases, allowing us to produce an additional 60,000 tonnes of feed a year”. The alterations will include extra raw material and finished product capacity alongside state of the art milling and mixing equipment. Neale continued, “Our transport requirement grows too and May 2017 saw us take delivery of the UK's very first 'Non-Tip' bulk blower trailers. The trailers allow us to deliver feed from any compartment and in any order whilst not tipping the trailer. The system has been designed to maximise bio-security and reduce the hazardous risks associated with tipping trailers”.

These developments are part of a long term plan for the company which will span over the next decade and encompass; development, modernisation, diversification and automation that will result in a complete renewal of the plant.

Central Demolition

Central Demolition Named In Top 100 Demolition Contractors across the Globe B

ased in Bonnybridge, Scotland, Central Demolition has grown to be a leading organisation within the demolition, asbestos removal and recycling sectors. The company was established back in 1993 and today continues to serve the whole of the UK with a mixed fleet of vehicles, machines and trailers. We sat down with Service Manager, Murray Brodie and Marketing and Business Development Manager, Chelsea Tulloch who took us through the complete history of the company. “We started just down the road at the smaller yard – it started out as just demolition and dismantling with a couple of old trucks. We’ve now got 30 plus trucks, 60 vans, 40 trailers and 101 machines and we’re self-sufficient in containers, cabin set-

ups and generators. It’s pretty much a full operation from start to finish,” said Murray.

the environment. As such, the firm has achieved several industry accolades.

Central Demolition has over 200 employees distributed over offices, the workshop, the recycling yard and demolition sites. The firm also employs between 30-40 drivers – 99% of which always drive the same vehicle. Murray continued, “On the machines, it’s a bit different. We have men that are licensed to operate specialist high reach equipment on the demolition sites but we can utilise them to operate other equipment and vehicles if called upon”.

Chelsea continued, “We are an ARCA accredited asbestos removal contractor, so we can also remove and handle hazardous waste such as asbestos. A lot of our employees have won individual accolades from the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC). We’ve won things at the Falkirk Business Awards for Best Green Business and Best Large Business. We were also delighted to be named in the top 100 demolition contractors across the globe in an industry magazine which was based on company turnover, projects and staff”.

Central Skip Hire is Central Demolition’s sister business and is also based out of their head office in Bonnybridge. They provide a full waste management service to customers which includes skip hire, tipping facilities, recycling and also hazardous waste management (by special arrangement) e.g. asbestos. The customers that Central Demolition serve are across all categories, from smaller skips to domestic household and also larger ones for commercial and industrial needs. The company heavily invests in skilled personnel, training, facilities and equipment year upon year. Both partners, Ross and Colin, have gradually built the company up to be an industry recognised organisation and significant investments have included the extension and refurbishment of their head office and the purchase of the very latest waste recycling plant for their Bonnybridge recycling facility.

As a forward thinking company, Central Demolition’s future goal is to develop their already well-established and industry leading business by further investing in different operations and building on excellent relationships with suppliers and customers. Tel: 01324 815 700 www.centraldemolition.co.uk

Chelsea said, “One of the things that we are trying to get across is that our target is zero waste landfill, so we do try and recycle everything we take from our demolition sites and the waste from customers who use our skip hire business. We’ve also just taken on four apprentices in the workshops – one for each of the disciplines – the commercial fitting shop, plant fitting shop, paint shop and fabricating shop”. Central Demolition also holds several key memberships and accreditations which demonstrate their commitment to best practice, training, health and safety, quality and

s a leading supplier to the construction industry, Mick George’s commercial fleet has now grown to the size of more than 400 HGV vehicles. We checked in with Mick George Ltd's Transport Manager, Joe Gossage, to find out how the company has developed since we spoke to them last year. Having previously learnt that Mick George Ltd had become FORS Gold accredited and won Tipper Haulier of the Year at the National Tip-ex and Tank-ex Gala Dinner, it’s certainly been an exciting period since. In the last 12 months, the firm has added nearly 100 HGVs to their fleet of vehicles, a growing number of internal sites which now stands at an impressive 24 locations, as well as continuing to diversify with a range of new services controlled from their Cambridgeshire headquarters. Not to mention, the on-going inward investment required to support such high aspirations, the most recent of which includes a £3.5million state of the art recycling centre. Transport Manager, Joe Gossage said, “We have experienced significant growth mainly due to service expansion, but in part down to geographical as well.

54

Our core business will always remain, but the intention is to add value to these services with complimentary provisions.’’ Such services include a brand new online retail platform, an environmental asbestos division, insurance service, telecoms department and installation service to name but a few of the recent additions, which are all part of the overall strategic plan for the business. Transporting a wide variety of aggregates and a multitude of different waste streams, both hazardous and non-

hazardous, the transport operation is critical to the company’s success. The fleet consists of everything from rigid and articulated tippers to skip loaders and hook loaders, plus concrete mixers, volumetric concrete mixers, refuse vehicles and hi-abs. The majority of these vehicles are DAF and Scania HGVs with a smaller fleet of Mercedes-Benz trucks provided by Orwell Truck and Van. The firm’s fleet has also been replenished with the addition

of 30 MAN 8X4 tippers in the last three months. Joe also admitted that the company plans to invest in more vehicles to continue their growth into the next year. The businesses heartland remains in East Anglia and East Midlands, but operations are gradually expanding to national coverage for both contracting, trade and retail products. Joe continued, “As well as the extensive involvement on developments within our immediate surrounding counties, there is increasing involvement in projects outside of those boundaries. Currently, we’re completing works in North London, Manchester, Cornwall and Scotland to give a brief indication of the scale of operation and dependency on our vehicle fleet.’’ In 2018, Mick George Ltd will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. In the future, the company will look to continue at the forefront of the construction industry by way of consolidating its products and services, while expanding its operational areas. orley Skips, founded by Clive Morley, was a predominantly farming business from 1965 until 2004. Morley Skips became a limited company in 2009 and is now directed by Clive and James Morley at their Essex depot. A family-owned business, the Essex company operates within the waste recycling and asbestos sectors and offers a number of different services to domestic and industrial clients.

Operating throughout most of Essex and further afield for asbestos, the company runs a fleet of Volvo trucks. Director, James Morley said, “We operate four Volvo 18-tonne skip loaders which are compliant with the latest Euro legislation. We use Navman tracking – you can send orders to trucks and this has enabled us to save considerable amounts of time and fuel. We’re hoping to add another lorry to the fleet in March”.

The firm’s friendly team of staff will deliver your skip quickly and efficiently to your desired location and their state of the art trommel and picking line enables Morley Skips to recycle a high amount of waste. This allows them to avoid sending any waste to landfill. However, other services also include premium quality topsoil deliveries and the delivery of any quantity of crushed hardcore directly to your door.

Additionally, Morley Skips works closely with health and safety and environmental agencies to ensure that a high level of service and practice is maintained. Their small team of nine are fully trained and dedicated to solving any waste disposal needs. James continued, “We continued to grow through the recession by offering an efficient and excellent service. However, it will be interesting

to see how leaving the EU could affect plastic and other recyclables prices, as we export bales to Europe”. Despite already adding a new truck to the fleet and gaining many new account customers in the last 12 months alone, Morley Skips are looking to improve health and safety and grow the company more. The firm will also look towards a fully automated ordering system to improve efficiency even further by allowing customers to order and pay for skips online. Morley Skips would like to thank MC Group, Witham for their friendly and reliable service which is one of the key reasons for maintaining a fully Volvo fleet of vehicles. We have been running our trucks with the Bessie Quick Release Couplings for the last two years and now can happily state it has been a very good decision on our part.” We used to lose several hours a month running time through broken airlines not to mention the cost implications of getting external assistance to get us underway. “However now the drivers can change their own in a simple and safe manner and be back on the road in minutes”. As a result of its success we now have 450 plus trucks fitted with the Bessie Kits and now request it to be spec as standard on all future purchases. Mark Matkin, National Fleet Manager, Culina Logistics The Bessie system has successfully addressed an industry wide problem that has resulted in excessive downtime and unnecessary cost for the many years. The well designed and manufactured product has enabled Bibby Distribution to reduce its cost, improve productivity and vehicle up time. Bibby Distribution have been so impressed with the system, we now specified the Bessie System be fitted on all new vehicles, including the order of 450 currently being introduced to the fleet.” Adam Purshall, National Fleet Manager, Bibby Distribution
