ersilia, the renowned tourist destination in V Tuscany (Italy), celebrates the 500 years anniversary since the foundation of its cultural

identity marked by the Ruling of Pope Leo X. In occasion of this very special event, bus operator Fratelli Verona in Pietrasanta (Tuscany), a company specializing in the rental of tourist buses and vehicles with drivers for hire, took upon the decoration of a Setra 411 HD. The vehicle features the emblem of the Lion of Marzocco (the symbol of people’s power in the Florentine Republic) next to the names of the towns of Pietrasanta, Seravezza, Forte dei Marmi and Stazzema, followed by the slogan ‘AD 1513: the birth of the Medicea Versilia’. There are also depictions of the Cathedral of San Martino and of the Pietrasanta Pier, and, combined with the names of Seravezza and Stazzema there are pictures of the Medici, a street in Izza and a block of marble. The graphic design was created by Studio Pico in Modena following instructions by the bus operator. The Setra 411 HD is a tourist coach with a length of a little more than 10 m, a capacity of 44 seats and a Euro 5 diesel engine (403 hp). The vehicle was first introduced March 16 in the main locations of Versilia and it will travel across Italy and all over Europe displaying the pictures of Versilia and its anniversary.

Volvo hybrids sold worldwide reached one thousand units. The latest have been delivered to the Arriva Group and to AVL transport company in Luxembourg

olvo Buses delivered 44 hybrid buses to V Arriva North West, a division of Arriva that operates bus services around North West

England. These are the Volvo B5LH hybrid buses with parallel drive system. All the vehicles are in the double decker version and have a Wrightbus bodywork. It’s the largest order of its type outside of London and it is in part due to Green Bus funding, a fund which is supporting bus companies and local authorities in England to help them buy new low carbon buses. More hybrids, in

this case for the transport company of the city of Luxembourg (AVL) which has taken delivery of five Volvo 7900, the first ones in the Benelux region. The vehicles are 3-door Volvo 7900 hybrids equipped with air-condition and standard double-glazed windows. Volvo’s hybrid bus runs entirely on electricity, quietly and emission-free, from standstill to a speed of 15-20 km/h. At higher speeds the bus receives additional power from a small 4-cylinder diesel engine running on biodiesel. The energy generated during engine braking is stored in the on-board batteries and is used to power the bus’s electric motor and auxiliary systems. With this delivery, the number of hybrid buses supplied by Volvo Buses to AVL rises to 25 while the Volvo hybrid buses globally so far sold are almost 1,000.

pair of hydrogen-electric minibuses A was introduced in Val di Fiemme (Italy) in occasion of the Nordic World Ski

Championships that took place February 20 to March 3 in Trentino. Deployed to provide shuttle service for the international press covering the event, the two vehicles are built on Iveco Daily platform by Dolomitech, an Italian company specialised in the research and development of propulsion systems for high efficiency and low environmental impact vehicles. The motorisation is hybrid combining PEM fuel-cells and 80 kW batteries that are rechargeable also through a three-phase power outlet. The asynchronous electric motor has a maximum power of 80 kW. The 300 litre tank is made of carbon fibre and fits 7 kg of hydrogen at

350 bar. An hydrogen service station was built in the village of PanchiĂ (Trento) specifically for the two minibuses. Both approved as B Class, the vehicles have a laden weight of 5,600 kg and accommodate 16 passengers plus driver. The equipment includes heating, air conditioning, ABS braking system with kinetic energy recovery. Regarding performance, the manufacturer claims a running range of about 250 km and recharging times below 10 minutes. HIGH TECH STORE

A REAL ARMCHAIR

latest offer THE by Politecnica, a company speciali-

sing in the production of bus seats, is aimed at passengers’ onboard comfort and entertainment. It is called Relax TransEuropaExpress and it is a variant of the accomplished Relax GTV model. It’s not just a seat, but rather it’s an armchair. In addition to the double padding and the elegant seams that create channels for air flow, it features a wider and more comfortable headrest. Thanks to the increased size of the headrest on the back side, upon request, it is also possible to mount an LCD touch screen monitor for watching movies and videos. The new seat is made of two-tone leather and is equipped with side pockets. As for armrest upholstery, it is possible to choose between leather and composite carbon colour.

WITH ONE HAND

lide & Click, liS terally. The name of the product reveals

its function. It is the latest floor anchorage solution offered by Q’Straint, a British company that for 25 years had been developing products and solutions for the safety of wheelchair passengers and for public and private transport. In addition to guaranteeing 360 degrees rotation, Slide & Click is rather practical since it can be operated with one hand only. Moreover, it is easy to mount, it has a long lifespan, it only requires minimum maintenance and it reduces potential interference with wheelchairs components on board the vehicle. The stainless steel housing contributes to maximum strength and durability. Slide & Click is compatible with all QRT Retractor systems by Q’Straint and with the Q-5000 series.

IT DOESN’T GET MORE MICRO

IT’S

an ultra-compact size car with the shape of a bus. It is the smallest ever seen and it comes in the micro size of 3.7 metres. Hence the name ‘MicroMax’. Presented last March at the Geneva Motor Show, it is a concept car designed by Frank Rinderknecht of Rinspeed, a Swiss automaker. MicroMax has been conceived as a vehicle for intelligent urban mobility that takes advantage of the potential of the Internet. A special app for smartphones, tablets, and the web allows users to locate the closest available vehicle and the most convenient according to an individual’s itinerary. The driver receives directions from the control centre via a 19inch high resolution touch screen monitor. The cabin is well designed and spacious thanks to 2.2 metres in height. It can transport up to three passengers plus driver and it also has room for suitcases or a shopping cart. Passengers can make use of a refrigerator, a coffee maker and free Wi-Fi. It features and all-electric traction system making use of forklift drive system technology. The vehicle is so quiet that it needs to reproduce engine noise in order to be heard by pedestrians. About twenty partners contributed to the creation of MicroMax. Among them, Swiss company Esoro for the manufacturing, Gaugler & Lutz for the design of internal components, Linde Material Handling for the electric traction system, Harman for the interactive screen, Eberspächer for the air conditioning system and the auxiliary heater, and Continental for the dashboard.

ULTRA LIGHT

erman company G Konvekta introduced the second ge-

neration of its Ultra Light range of bus air conditioning systems with models that feature greater efficiency and ease of use. Its captivating shape with dynamic edges and purist surfaces translates into functionality and aerodynamics. The weight of the Ultra Light II is reduced to 65 kg compared to 75 kg of a conventional model. The high level of insulation of the material and the leak-proof construction require 10 percent less refrigerant, thus reducing energy consumption. The new model also improves accessibility of components and reduces exposure to dust and dirt with a considerable reduction in terms of maintenance costs by 25 percent. Furthermore, the adoption of new high-class blower technology reduces noise levels by 5 decibels compared to its predecessors.

INDIAN CLIMATE

pheros, a German S company specialised in air conditioning,

ventilation and heating systems, attended Busworld India 2013 (Mumbai February 1-3) where it presented several new products for the local bus market through its subsidiary ‘Spheros Motherson Thermal System Limited’. One of the previews was the CityVent ventilation unit designed for city buses. Thanks to its high radial blower airflow volume (2,000 m³/h), it delivers a uniform air movement in the passenger compartment, also when the vehicle is at a standstill and in case of heavy rain. Spheros also presented the Aerosphere Tropical roof mounted air conditioning unit with 35 to 50 kW cooling capacity as well as the powerful CC 225 from the Compact Cooler series, specifically designed for very hot countries. Finally, it also showcased the Thermo E, the latest generation of the Spheros Thermo heaters, available in the 20 and 32 kW versions.

Tourino is now ten years old. THE In fact, it was in the autumn of 2003 that it made its first appearance at Bus-

world Kortrijk, when its 9.35 metres in length also marked Mercedes’ debut in the segment of medium size touring coaches. From the very beginning its distinctive features have been a clearly distinguishable family identity (its aesthetic is modelled on the Travego), easy manoeuvrability and a high comfort level for both the driver and passengers.

two outward THE swinging single doors give access to the interior

corridor at approximately one metre from the ground, confined by the high bases where the 32 seats are anchored (4 more are located at the rear end the under the rear window). The seats are the Evobus CXL narrow model, with reclining backrest and armrest on the corridor side. From upholstery to assembly of accessories, CaetanoBus care to details for the interiors is completely in line with Mercedes’ quality standards. The overhead compartments are open with service sets (air vents, speaker, LED reading lights and call button) located on the velvet covered bottom. On the ceiling there is an electronically controlled hatch and ceiling lights. Interior climate is controlled by a roof mounted air conditioning unit delivering 22 kW cooling power, by floor convectors and doubleglazed side windows.

The equipment can be enriched choosing from a list of numerous optional features, starting with the video system, a water toilet and an onboard kitchen. The driver makes use of an am-

phitheater dashboard with central instrument panels inclusive of display for vehicle status information and panels for route information. To the right, there are the climate control panel and the radio system.

There are also a digital tachograph and two storage spaces on a bulging column section. Right in front of the guide seat there are two storage spaces and a 40-litre fridge to the side.

Throughout the years, its exterior aesthetics basically remained unchanged with the roof line merging into the b-pillar of the front door and the second door positioned on the rear overhang. What has changed, albeit slightly, is the design of the grille with the Mercedes star on top of the protruding front bumper. With bodywork by Portuguese company CaetanoBus (co-owned by Daimler up to 2010) on a Mercedes OC 500 RF chassis (manufactured in the Spanish plant of Sámano), the Tourino however embraced the evolution of basic mechanics, from the engine to security systems, but also of comfort criteria for passenger and ergonomics of the driver’s seat (dashboard and controls layout). Under the hood (in the rear), there is a 7.2-litre Om 926 LA six-cylinder vertical inline engine with BlueTec SCR diesel technology with AdBlue injected into exhaust gases to classify as Euro V. 286 horsepower (210 kW) make this engine the most powerful on the market for this size of vehicles, combined to 1,120 Nm of torque between 1,200 and 1,600 rpm. It mounts a Mercedes G 85 six-speed manual transmission controlled with the lever on the floor to the right of the driver. Safety features include electronically controlled EBS braking system on pneumatic disk brakes, and also ABS, ASR, ESP and BA, integrated with the action of the Voith VR 123 hydraulic retarder. Air suspensions take advantage of the independent wheel geometry of the front axle to provide running stability. Likewise the drive axle, it is made by Mercedes. The drive axle is the H04 model with a maximum capacity of 9.44 tonnes, allowing the possible addition of a rear ski box or a 2 tonnes trailer. It should be noted that the location of the second door on the rear overhang makes room for luggage space between the axles for a volume of 4.1 cubic feet capacity, accessible via two hinged flaps on both sides of the vehicle. The compact size of Tourino, 9.35 metres in length and 2.4 metres in width, ensure excellent manoeuvrability (turning circle of 17.2 metres), which, combined with the excellent delivery of the motor torque it makes it suitable for hiking on winding mountain roads.

Traction motor Power 120 kW Torque 1,400 Nm

The very first Urbino Electric LE 8.9 was seen in the form of a prototype at Busworld 2011. Just a few months later, the final version was ready (with the addition of an air conditioning system) and it undertook numerous test runs in Poznam, Warsaw and Hamburg largely exceeding the 100 km running range claimed by the manufacturer. In September 2012 the 12 LF version was introduced. Two Solaris electric buses: the first one is the 8.95-metre in the low entry configuration with two doors (based on the Alpine LE midibus), the second is the 12-meter with a fully lowered floor and with three doors. Both models mount electrical equipment provided by German specialist Vossloh Kiepe. The engine is a four-poles induction asynchronous three-phase electric motor with 120 kW output for the shorter model and 160 kW for the 12-metre model. They both have a maximum torque of 1,400 Nm For the storage of the energy necessary for traction there are lithium-ion batteries housed in the rear of the vehicle, with an operating voltage of 600 volts and total capacity of 120 kWh for the first and 210 kWh for the second. Furthermore, for the powering of the air conditioning unit, there is an additional battery pack of 35 kWh located on the front of the

roof of the Urbino 8.9 model. There is also a braking energy recovery system, integrated with resistors for the release of excess energy. Batteries recharging of both vehicles takes place via a direct current Plug-in connection of 750 volts and 140 Amps. The shorter Urbino takes approximately two hours to fully recharge its batteries from a 100 kW charging station. In order to decrease charging times of the 12-metre model to the same amount, they are currently studying a 200 kW plugin solution. Likewise they are also devising and preparing the vehicles for automated fast charging systems by inductive power supply or by pantograph, in order to top up the batteries along the route or at the terminus, thus completely solving any operational range limitations. With regard to construction features, a lot of attention has been paid to control the weight of the Urbino Electric in order to compensate for the 1,400 kg of the traction batteries. Mahogany, which is thinner but stronger, was used instead of the usual birch plywood for the floor, window glasses are thinner, air ducts are made of a new composite material ACM, seats are lighter and rims are made of aluminium.
