tric bus which runs on an ultra-capacitor instead of batteries. It can travel up to 20 km on a single, rapid charge. Launched in Sofia, Poland, last May, it is the result of a collaboration between Chariot Motors and Chiese firms, bus manufacturer Higer, and ultra-capacitor producer Aowei. A trial route in Sofia was assessed by the Belicon lab of the University of Landshut, Germany. Following Chariot data, the e-bus consumes over an average day 0.95 kWh/km, compared to a regular battery bus operating on the same route, which is expected to produce 1.5 kWh/km. Chariot e-bus is currently in operation with the city transport operator Stolichen Elektrotransport under a year-long pilot programme in Sofia.

According to Stability Law 2015, Euro 0 buses will no longer circulate starting from January 1, 2019. According to Anfia, in order to replace the Euro 0 buses (8,500 vehicles), there is a need of public funding equal to 1.87 billion euro. We will see if the state succeeds in raising funds. At the beginning we said that the Italian bus industry is endangered but so the foreign manufacturers are that have to deal with an Italian market cut by half compared to the situation of seven years ago. In 2014, the number of new registrations amounted only to 2,152 (more than a third are of mediumsmall size), dropt to 15% compared to 2013. The AS Tronic has been produced at the ZF location in Friedrichshafen, Germany, since 1997. The AS Tronic transmission range covers a torque range between 500 and 3,100 Newton meters. The AS Tronic lite (500 to 1,100 Nm) and the AS Tronic mid (800 to 1,600 Nm) are mainly used in light delivery trucks, buses, and medium-duty commercial vehicles, while the larger members of this transmission family are suitable for heavy trucks and construction vehicles. Coinciding with the production milestone of the AS Tronic, ZF is writing a new chapter in the history of this transmission type: TraXon, the modular automatic transmission system, which will be produced at the ZF location in Friedrichshafen and will gradually replace the AS Tronic over the next few years. The all-new basic transmission is suitable for torque requirements of up to 3,500 Nm and can be linked to five modules. The new system features an anticipatory shifting strategy courtesy of PreVision GPS. IT’S NOT JUST A MATTER OF STYLE Three lengths, two Euro VI diesel engines and two alternative versions (hybrid engine and CNG). It’s up to you the choice of Urbanway Iveco bus rbanway range is in the limelight, the U last series of city buses produced by Iveco Bus at the plant of Annonay, France.
Introduced in 2013 with new Euro VI engines, it replaced the previous Citelis series with the Irisbus logo. It debuted in May 2013 at the 60th edition of the UITP exhibition in Geneva, being the first Euro VI passenger vehicle offered by Iveco Bus, in a 12-metre version. Today the Urbanway family is in three URBANWAY Euro VI

nes a greater resistance and a lower weight. Everything is for the consumption benefit. There is maximum corrosion protection, thank to the cataphoretic treatment of the entire steel structure. Besides, the Urbanway buses decrease the total operating cost by means of sharing the Irisbus range product facilities such as easily removable body elements, with front and rear bumpers consisting of three individual elements, front and rear lights separated by panels to avoid replacement in case of minor accidents, radiator grille and tailgate with a lot of additional space for advertising.
The other Urbanway strong points are lighting, air distribution system and new driving position. There are interesting lighting solutions, both for the body and for the interiors. Among them there are new headlights that incorporate LED daytime running lights and the rear module with integrated LED for stop, indicators, side and tail lights. The fog lamps have the ‘corner light’ function for lateral illumination in tight corners and complex maneuvers. The central pavilion backlit with the LED interior lighting is considered to look beautiful along with two Led customized continuous bands with èè

UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS
Every year Daimler Buses carry out tests under extreme conditions on iced-over lakes, snow-covered tracks or urban networks. Not far from the Arctic Circle
rvidsjaur and Arjeplog in Sweden, RoA vaniemi (the so-called Santa Claus home town) in Finland. These three locations south
of the Arctic Circle are the annual destination of engineers, mechanics and drivers from the Daimler Buses ‘testing’ department in Neu-Ulm, Germany. A team of experts who periodically, between late January and mid-March, leave for Lapland to test vehicles, components, chassis, engines, steering systems, suspension, devices and materials. The Daimler’s in-house target is the perfect operation of all the Mercedes-Benz & Setra components at temperatures down to minus 25 degrees Celsius, and down to minus 40 ° for certain functions. In particular, there is the driving dynamics te-
sting on the iced-over lakes carried out at Arjeplog, with surfaces treated by the ice experts, while in the town of Rovaniemi the ‘test team’ not only uses its own test track with skid pan at the airport but also tests urban regular-service buses under extreme winter conditions in real traffic situations. So, it is no coincidence, in fact, that they call them ‘extreme tests’. “The driving test results on snow and ice are impressive,” - explain the technicians of Daimler Buses, “Mercedes & Setra buses manage to cope reliably with even the most challenging tasks and precarious situations. And, above all, the vehicle always reacts in the way the driver expects. This applies to all vehicles, from minibuses right up to super-high-deck touring coaches”.
There are different examples confirming that. For example, Mercedes-Benz Tourismo K is reassuringly reliable in all driving situations thanks to its cleverly thought-out axle load distribution and precisely tuned safety and assistance systems. Or the Mercedes-Benz Travego, a “Safety Coach”, even on snow and ice, aided by all currently available safety and assistance systems, the 12.18-metre-long high-decker, which is an astounding performer,
even on glass-like road surfaces. The same applies to the Setra TopClass S 516 HDH – a three-axle vehicle that combines luxury and safety at the highest level, even in highly adverse road conditions. With these types of tests Daimler has made extended use as well for the transition to the Euro VI engines: seven years (2007-2013) of testing, 60 prototypes tested, and more than 5 million kilometres traveled. But there are not only extreme tests in arctic temperatures. Daimler will test the vehicles under the opposite summer heat conditions in the Sierra Nevada, Spain, under the summer sun at 40 degrees and in Turkey where the vehicles complete their endurance tests and contend with major temperature fluctuations and extreme changes in air humidity. Around 200 people make up the Daimler Buses testing team. They have developed as well a test catalogue with standards applicable worldwide to all Daimler buses.

ess than six months after the drive test of L Irizar i6 measuring 12.2 metres in length (see BusToCoach Magazine October 2014),
Irizar is back to make a short at route of 342 km with the 3-axle i6 HDH 14.37 Euro VI, still based on Scania chassis as usual on the italian market. It is a 14-metre super high-decker powered by a 13-litre Scania engine with 490 hp (360 kW) and a torque of 2,550 Nm necessary to carry around an extra-long ballast without any problem as if it were under full load (23,840 kg). èè

Something ‘extra’ here is a really nice atmoT sphere inside the Irizar i6 in a length of 14.37m. The 59
passenger seats are the Irizar PB seats even more comfortable than the series ones. Reclining and extendable, with leather side panels and complete with folding armrests, rear handle, footrest and two- three points belts. They are fixed on the raised base next to the corridor, on its turn positioned about 1.5 metres above the ground level and raised by two steps in respect from the driver’s seating position. There are elegant open-ended luggage racks, with external handrail that includes LED white light at two intensities. On the top of the luggage racks, there is a slot for the current distribution of conditioned air coming out the vents also clamped in the personal service set (interspersed by
the speakers) that include LED lights with touch-screen power buttons. For heating reasons there are floor convectors powered by Spheros Thermo 300 located behind the door in the rear end on the
right side of the vehicle. There are three flat-screen monitors, one of which is embedded in the front part (with digital clock) above the driver’s seat, the second one is attached to the head of the right luggage rack
above the central staircase which leads to the toilet and the third one is on the left at the partialized luggage rack. An elegant and ergonomic Isri pneumatic seat is offered for the driver.

Confirmation that fuel consumption decreased compared to Euro V was accurate. The irizar i6 covered 342 kilometres from Milan to Genoa and back, consuming on average one litre of diesel fuel every 4.2 kilometres (including the equivalent AdBlue amount) and traveling at an average speed of 82 km/h. Nobody disputes that Scania engines have always been characterised by low consumption that confirmed both the 12.2-metre long Irizar i6 and its elder brother, reaching the top places in the shortlist of competitors still headed by Setra that in the 3-axle category had managed to achieve an excellent result of 4.45 km/litre traveling at the same average speed. But it should be emphasized that the Setra tested by BusToCoach was the S 516 HDH of 13.3 metres that is shorter than our Irizar i6 of 14.37 metres and, what’s more, with a trial weight of 21,100 kg. here is the most potent 13-liT tre Scania Euro VI version for the Irizar i6 of 14 metres. In
other words, it is DC13 125, with 490 hp (360 kW) and a torque of 2,550 Nm. It is characterized by injection system with four valves per cylinder, common-rail with XPI measuring 2,400 bar and the Scania VGT variable geometry turbine air-air. The reduction of pollutant emissions is achieved through the combination of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and catalyst (SCR) with AdBlue injection. As for the transmission, it is the Scania Opticruise 12-speed automated gearbox, with driving modes selectable between economy, standard and power to make the most of the engine’s performance. It can be completed with the assistance function for hill starts and the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). Both braking system (EBS) and

less compared to i6 is a considerable value. While waiting to test a 14-metre long Setra, it will not be unreasonable to assume a draw in terms of consumption comparison with the Irizar i6. The Irizar under test has got the engine power run by Scania Opticruise 12-speed automated gearbox, that is a guarantee for driving comfort and proper transmission choice, providing you know the right way to use the Economy functions (in flat sections) and Power (in the most challenging). If you stay in Economy mode even in uphill sections, fuel consumption may be affected. The height of almost 4 metres does not affect the i6 driving stability which relies on electronically controlled air suspension, independent front axle and the third axle to favor the low speed maneuvers and allow to turn within a diametre of 23,15 metres. Like in all Irizar models, the luggage compartment doors are open through a pantograph with pneumatic control. In our case, with a toilet installed, they open to the luggage space of about 9.5 cubic metres with free spaces added above the front and rear wheel arches. Whilst leaving the Irizar PB model range, there is a task to give the top tourist services, the Irizar i6 proves to be able to offer passengers an excellent level of comfort, especially as to the vehicle under test that draws from the optional list the Irizar PB seats.
