THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS ON TRANSPORT The entire sector is suffering, from manufacturers to transport companies up to international event organizers. Hopefully in September everything will return to normality

effect of coronavirus on the society and «withThe on the global economy is unprecedented, serious consequences for the automotive

industry. Indeed, most of the members of the European Automobile and Commercial Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) have already announced temporary plant closures due to slump in demand, supply shortages and government measures and are facing cases of coronavirus infections and quarantines among their employees». This is the cry of alarm launched by ACEA and which includes the stance taken by all national transport associations in the world. We will have to deal with this situation for a few more months, and manufacturers are asked to continue (as they are doing) the production and supply of spare parts, as well as to ensure the essential vehicle assistance services. The role of the local transport companies is not less demanding. If on the one hand companies must implement new rules to protect the drivers (boarding of passengers only from the central/rear door, prohibition on the use of seats near the driving area and suspension on the sale of tickets on board among others), on the other hand they must not reduce the number of trips, in order to avoid crowding onboard the vehicle. This implies costs that

will burden the financial report of companies. The worst situation is undoubtedly that of companies operating on long-haul transport. Due to the block of interregional and touring travel services, buses are stranded at the depot, and they will be for a long time. We can only be prepared for a slow recovery and the possible additional prevention services offered may make the difference (for example, sanitation of vehicles, personal protective equipment and disinfectant gels onboard and sanitizing filters on the air conditioning system). Finally, there will be an impact on the agenda of international trade fairs: all have been postponed. IT-Trans in Karlsruhe has been postponed to December, Warsaw Bus to late June, City Trans Ukraine to October and ZEB Paris to the fall. The dates of the “Safety of Vehicle – Safety of Passenger” conference in Warsaw and the Mobility Expo in Paris are still waiting for developments. We hope that in September life will return to normality with the IAA in Hannover and all the other exhibitions to follow. IBE 2020 FREE IS SCHEDULED TRANSPORT IN FOR OCTOBER LUXEMBOURG Among the main exhibitions scheduled for this fall there is also the International Bus Expo (IBE), which comes back to the Rimini Expo Center from 22 to 24 October

he Rimini International Bus Expo (IBE), a T biennial exhibition dedicated to the sector of collective passenger transport, will return

in October. The 2020 edition will be focused on the theme of integrated, innovative and sustainable collective mobility: from urban mobility to long-distance travel; from small collective means of transport for tourists and local public transport to rental with drivers, to bus sharing and to light rail transit systems. The format is completely new: from simple fair for the public and private bus transport industry to platform for collective passenger transport with particular attention to Local Public Transport companies. A scientific technical Committee will coordinate events and contents under the administration of Giuseppe Catalano, professor at the Sapienza University of Rome and coordinator of the Technical Structure of the Mission for

the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT). “The goal of the new Technical Scientific Committee”, stated the Italian Exhibition Group, which is the organizer of IBE, “is the creation of an agenda of high-level contents and of technical-scientific quality which includes all the main actors of the sector, associations, bodies and stakeholders who will be able to develop a productive comparison on strategic market issues, proposing shared solutions. Another goal is the creation of a permanent round table discussion on LPT and technologies for rail materials promoted by IEG, IBE, ISFORT, Sapienza University and which involves institutions, associations, service managers and the industry “. IBE 2018 confirmed the increase in the number of visitors and exhibitors. The latter were 139 in 2018, representing the entire mobility chain of collective passenger transport: from manufacturers to body shops, from components to accessories up to solutions for mobility and fleet management. IBE 2020 will be held from 22 to 24 October in the Rimini Expo Center. uxembourg is the first country in the world L to make public transport free across the entire country. The measure entered into force on

March 1, 2020 and concerns residents, workers, cross-border workers and tourists who use all collective transport modes on the national territory. First-class rail services and those for abroad are excluded, even if with reduced rates. The measure is part of a wider strategy aimed at strengthening the transport infrastructure through substantial investments in a series of different projects. “Systematic and continuous investment is a sine qua non-essential condition for promoting the attractiveness of public transport,” said Deputy Prime Minister François Bausch. “The range, punctuality and quality of the services offered are crucial to encourage citizens to change their habits and encourage public transport rather than private cars”. Among the various projects, there is the systematic expansion of the national railway

network capacity, also doubling the current number of relay car parks, in particular at the borders, in order to ensure a convenient connection with the 200,000 cross-border workers who travel to Luxembourg daily. Another project is the complete overhaul of the national bus line network and the transition to alternative drive for the fleet by 2030. Among the projects, there are the increase in the number of electric car charging points across the country to 1,600 by the end 2020; the creation of an homogeneous network of cycle paths; the expansion of regional tram lines; real-time information for passengers and the use of a future third lane in motorways dedicated to carpooling and buses. Another European country that has bet on free access to public transport is Estonia which in July 2018 abolished the ticket on operating buses in 11 of the 15 counties. The decision is part of an ambitious plan which was already in place in the capital, Tallinn, where public transport has been free since 2013.

SIEMENS

icharge UC is the new range of Siemens charging systems for electric buses, trucks and duty vehicles. The Sicharge UC S series covers the entire power range from 50 to 600 kW and can be combined with various connection options such as charging plugs and on-board or off-board pantographs. To meet growing demands for higher voltages, the station can operate at up to 1,000 volts. Electric vehicles with various technologies and batteries can therefore be flexibly charged, either while travelling or at the depot. «For buses that cover a long route during the day, a single charge at the depot is often not enough», explained Monique Mertins of Siemens Smart Infrastructure. «Additional charging points are needed along the route. This is why it is important that the charging stations can be connected to various contact systems like charging plugs, often used for depot charging, and also to pantographs for charging along the way. The advantage of a pantograph is that the vehicle will connect to the charging system completely automatically, with no need to manually attach a plug». The charging processes can be monitored via the Siemens cloud-based MindSphere application. «For example», explained the German multinational, «it can apply smart charging principles to ensure that the system charges only when the price of electricity is favorable, or that the deposit doesn’t exceed a set maximum power level». Sicharge UC charging stations with a capacity of 150 kW are already in use at the VDL Bus & Coach Charging Test Center in Valkenswaard.

Our goal is CO2-free transportation by 2050. But even in many years, electric trucks and buses will cost more than diesel models. A supportive framework is needed to make electric mobility more profitable also for commercial customers». Other articles about Daimler: https://bustocoach.com/en/costruttore/evobus-italia-spa/

THE LION’S CITY IS READY FOR E-MOBILITY The start of series production of the 12-meter MAN Lion’s City E is almost in the pipeline. 360° consultancy and a new assistance network to support companies

the Coronavirus will permit it, the IF 12-meter electric MAN Lion’s City will start to be sold in the next few months.

By adding this zero-emission variant to those with diesel, gas and hybrid drive,

the new generation of MAN city buses is thus complete. The European Union has approved the Clean Vehicle Directive, according to which in 2025 45% of all new vehicles of public

transport companies will have to be clean buses. Zero-emission vehicles will also have to account for half of these vehicles, and in 2030 the mandatory share of clean vehicles will increase to 65%, half of which must always be made up of zeroemission vehicles. With the Lion’s City E, MAN is now ready to support public transport companies in this important challenge.

Built on the basis of the new Lion’s City, the full-electric version can be distinguished for the curvature of the front of the roof, in continuity with the side fairings that hide the electrical equipment. Inside, the seating area in the rear of the vehicle has been optimized (there are four more seats), following the elimination of the engine compartment. The consequent positioning of the batteries on the roof not only ensures that they are not exposed to the common risk of rear-end collision, but it also makes maintenance easier. The 12-meter Lion’s City E can carry up to 88 passengers, 25 of whom seated. Interior climate relys on an automatic roof-mounted regulation system, with a

heat pump with 30 kWh thermoelectric elements and an additional heating system that uses alternative fuels (biodiesel, HVO). As for the electric drive, it is fitted with a 160 kW continuous power engine (270 kW of peak) which is mounted on the left side of the second axle. Power is supplied by six lithium-ion battery modules (30 cells per module) for a total capacity of 480 kWh, all mounted on the roof, featuring a temperature management system to improve efficiency and enable a vehicle range of up to 200 km. In particularly favorable conditions, the range can reach 270 km. The batteries are charged at the depot via a male CCS connector (Combined Charging System). With a power of MAN LION’S CITY E 100 kW, the 12-meter bus can be completely charged in less than Length mm 12,185 3 hours. It leads to the establishment of route simulations, to the development of Business Case and complete operating modes. 42 MAN service centers in Europe already meet the electric vehicle standards. The long-term goal is to make 270 workshops available.

Only a few months are left before the 12-meter Lion’s City E series production will start, while for the 18-meter version we will have to wait until the first half of 2021. Meanwhile, the testing of a fleet of 15 buses continues. The fleet has been made available to the main public transport companies in five European countries: Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain and Belgium. With the exception of 18 foreign component specialists, the exhibitors were just Turkish. Vehicle manufacturers were even 100% Turkish and in any case only eight. The Chinese Icarus (Suzhou) Vehicle System should also have been added but it had to renounce. Important brands such as BMC and Temsa (which stopped production at the end of the last year), as well as MAN and Mercedes, which have major bus plants in Turkey, didn’t display their products. The internal market crisis certainly burdened the participation of local manufacturers to Busworld. The domestic market decreased by about 50% in 2019 compared to the The coronavirus didn’t stop the 8th edition of Busworld previous year and by two thirds compared Turkey. According to data provided by BMC, the city bus segment suffered the biggest decrease (-63.7%). The best performances were recorded by Anadolu Isuzu with 34.3% (thanks to 146 8.5-meter vehicles), BMC with 31.9% (thanks to 164 12-meter vehicles) and Otokar with 16%. Unfortunately for other applications there is no reliable data. It should be noted that Otokar declares that on the local market, one third of the buses sold are theirs. The fall of the Turkish domestic market did not however affect the volume of bus production by companies associated with the

OSD. By adding the number of midibuses and buses & coaches, 11,725 vehicles were manufactured in 2019, with a minimal decrease compared to the previous year (-1.1%). Midibuses decreased to 2,526 (-23.8%), far from over 5,000 units manufactured in 2014 and 2015. Large-size buses are instead increasing again by reaching 9,199 units (+ 7.7%). However, as for the minibuses, the data provided by OSD is not completely sufficient compared to the overall figures since it reports only the number of Karsan and Ford Otosan minibuses, ignoring the large group of bodybuilders that set up minibuses built on commercial vehicles of the main brands. As always, production is lead by the share of exports which increased from 71.8% in 2018 to 87.4% in 2019. Midibuses increased by 41.8% reaching 1,200 units, driven by the excellent performance of Anadolu Isuzu (853 vehicles).

Large-size buses also increased (+ 19.5%), with 9,045 vehicles exported. Of these, about 77% was manufactured in the local plants of Mercedes and MAN, to which are added 730 of Otokar (+ 22.9%), 527 of Karsan (+ 55.5%), 565 of Temsa ( -39.1%) and 321 of Anadolu Isuzu (-22.5%). In the stands of the Expo Center in Istanbul, in addition to the specialists in components, only three of the main manufacturers were on display: Otokar, Anadolu Isuzu and Karsan supported by Mapar Otomotiv (dealer of MAN) and a handful of minibus outfitters (Bur-Can, Can-Can, Erduman, Karadag, Ugur Karoser). In addition to displaying five of its models, Otokar took advantage of Busworld Turkey to underline its leadership on the domestic market, where one third of the amount of buses sold are theirs. At the same time, in

2019 the number of exported buses increased, reaching 970 units (+28.6%), thanks to a consolidated presence in 50 countries, starting from Malta, Italy, Serbia and France. Otokar committed strongly to the field of technological innovation with around 19 million euros spent in 2019 in research and development (153 million in the last ten years). The latest model resulting from this commitment is the 12-meter e-Kent electric city bus (launched last year), powered by motors on the wheels on the ZF axle, with a power of 250 kW. It features lithium-ion batteries (300 kWh) and a braking energy recovery system (15-20%) which enables a declared range of 300 km. It can carry up to 95 passengers.

It was supported on display at Busworld Turkey by three models of the Sultan series. These are the 8.5-meter low floor (also known as Agilo C), the 8.5-meter touring bus Sultan Mega (Navigo T) with 35+1+1 seating arrangement and the 7.2-meter version for multiple applications with 29+1 seating arrangement. Finally, on display there was also the 10-meter touring Doruk T (known as Ulyso T) with 39 or 43+1+1 seating arrangement and LDWS, AEBS, ASR and ESP installed as standard. Also for Anadolu Isuzu, the share of buses destined for export increased (1,199 vehicles, + 29.2%) which account for more than 80% of its production. The declared goal is

to extend its presence from 43 to over 60 countries by 2023, focusing mainly on the midibus range. At the exhibition in Istanbul, Anadolu Isuzu exhibited the 7.8-meter low entry Novociti Life both in the diesel version powered by a 180 hp FPT engine and coupled to Allison automatic transmission, and the Novociti Volt electric version powered by a 200 kW engine and two battery capacity levels: 140 kWh for a range of 210 km or 268 kWh for a range of 400 km. Batteries are guaranteed for five years or 250,000 km. The 12-meter low floor Citiport CNG is powered by a 300 hp natural gas Cummins engine and it can carry up to 90 passengers. Also on display was the 7.3-meter Novo Lux touring bus powered by a 190 hp Isuzu front engine which can carry up to 29 passengers. Karsan has instead bet everything on electric buses and has displayed again its Jest and Atak. The first was introduced on inter-

national markets in November 2018, while the second in June 2019. 68 and 18 units were sold re- ERDUMAN spectively in this period. The Jest Electric is a 6-meter low-floor bus, equipped with a BMW 125 kW electric motor and 44 or 88 kWh batteries produced by BMW. The declared range is 210 km and it features energy recovery during regenerative braking. Charging can be slow (8 hours) or fast in just an hour. The Atak Electric is instead an 8.3-meter bus powe- red by a 230 kW engine and 220 kWh BMW batteries for a range of 300 km. It can carry up to 52 passengers.

BUR-CAN

As in previous editions, at Busworld in Istanbul there was also a show of touring buses refurbished by Mapar. It is a MAN Truck & Bus dealer that supports the assistance

CAN-CAN and sale of spare parts and the rewamping of second-hand touring buses, which return to the market completely renewed. Finally, to represent the large group of local minibus manufacturer, five of them exhibited their solutions built on the Mercedes Sprinter, Iveco Daily and Volkswagen Crafter commercial vehicles. Retrofitting for every type of applications were displayed in the stands of Bur-Can, Can-Can, Erduman, Ugur Karoser and Karadag. Each one has a particular interior and exterior design but is overall similar to each other. For example, both the Sprinter 19 which has been extended by 50 centimeters in order to have 24 seats on board and the 20-seater Crafter Tourism feature a special rear luggage compartment, branded Minabus (Caradag Oto).
