gham: the medium-size low entry Vectio C powered by the Cummins ISB4.5 Euro VI engine and the tourism coach Navigo T, an 8.4-metre bus with 35+1+1 seating capacity. At Birmingham, the Navigo T was presented with an automatic gearbox. The Turkish manufacturer is extending its international presence with its right hand drive vehicle and is also working on structuring its distribution channel to extend in the UK with potential partners.

RECORD NUMBERS FOR THE ENVIRO 500

lexander Dennis Limited (ADL) has sold 1,700 units of A its all-new Enviro500 major model since the launch just two years ago. This is a real record for the UK manufacturer.

Hundreds of vehicles have gone into Hong Kong where ADL has strengthened relationships with different operators while almost 250 more will be built and delivered to Singapore and Malaysia between now and the summer of 2015. «The Enviro500 that we unveiled just two years ago – like all of our recent new products – is lighter, more fuel efficient and designed to carry more passengers than its predecessor», commented Colin Robertson, Chief Executive of ADL. «It has inspired an overwhelming response and between deliveries and orders in the pipeline we are approaching sales of 1,700». In North America, ADL launched a new, low height double deck at 13’6” (4.1m) in mid-October, thus avoiding over-height restrictions and opening up virtually every part of the USA and Canada to potential sales.

1994. It was the O 350 Tourismo, a twin-axle high-deck touring coach that broke with bus industry convention. In 1998 it was joined by the super-high-deck touring coach. A major overhaul took place in 1999. Just ten years on from its premiere, a special “Edition 10,000” series was brought out to celebrate a major milestone: the average production of 1,000 units a year. In autumn 2006, after a production run of over 12,000 models for more than 50 countries, debuted the new Mercedes-Benz Tourismo. It was now available in three different lengths from 12.1 to 14.0 m, as well as in twin-axle and, for the first time, triple-axle variants. Three years later, Mercedes-Benz expanded the range again by bringing out the new raised-floor Tourismo RH. Last year the Tourismo coaches were fitted with the new in-line six-cylinder engines with a 10.7 l displacement that meet the Euro VI emissions limits. In parallel to this, the new Tourismo K was launched to add a 10.3 m compact touring coach to the range. During the two model generations to date, over 21,000 units have rolled off the production line.

modern trolleybuses with battery drives are manufactured by Solaris Bus & Coach while the traction system is supplied by Vossloh Kiepe. The innovative dual-mode buses can be operated both in the trolleybus mode and in the battery mode. The lithium titanate traction batteries, which have high storage capacities, store the energy from the overhead contact line and the energy recuperated during braking and make it available afterwards to the vehicles on sections without overhead contact lines. Vossloh Kiepe will deliver the entire traction and on-board power supply equipment as well as the batteries for the articulated buses. The first two vehicles are to be delivered by the end of 2015 and the other two in 2016.

ECOLOGICAL BUSES IN THE UK

ritain’s biggest bus and coach manufacturer Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and GKN plc have signed a deal for the introduction of 250 greener, cleaner vehicles to transport fleets across the UK during the next two years. ADL’s Euro VI Enviro400 double deck bus is fitted with the Gyrodrive system. It uses a high speed flywheel made of carbon fibre to store the energy generated by the bus as it slows down to stop. It then utilises the stored energy to power a GKN EVO electric motor which helps accelerate the bus back up to speed, generating significant fuel savings at a considerably lower cost than battery hybrid alternatives.

buses signed in 2013. VHH is the second largest public transport company in northern Germany and currently runs a fleet of 577 buses, 90 percent with the Mercedes-Benz brand. All the Citaro buses operated by VHH are identically equipped. ULTRA-FAST CHARGE SOLUTION

NEW PRODUCTS BY WRIGHTBUS

PVI’s WATT system for ultra-fast charging of electrical buses at bus stops is being tested at Nice Cote d’Azur airport future is here. To be precise, at THE Nice Cote d’Azur Airport where, starting October 17, a very innovative ul-

tra-fast charging system for electrical buses at bus stops is being tested. It is the WATT system developed by French company PVI (Power Vehicle Innovation). It works as follows: at each stop, during the boarding/disembarking of passengers (approximately 20 seconds), a robotic arm on the bus roof extends out of its casing and automatically hooks up to an energy accumulator unit

mounted on a totem by the platform roof and powered by the urban electrical grid. Once recharging is done, the battery has a driving range of up to 800 metres, making it possible to reach the next stop where the vehicle will recharge again. The WATT system enables the complete elimination of fine particles and prevents CO2 emissions (it is estimated that during the trial period on a line such as that at Nice airport will save more than 43 tons). Another advantage of this system is that it doesn’t require dedicated lanes, catenary, or electrical sub-station, nor heavy roadworks. The project was developed and patented by PVI and supported by Transdev, the company that, among other transport operations, is in charge of bus services at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. The project was financed by ADEME, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency.

VEHIXEL / INDCAR - Next

fter Bordeaux in 2012, this year edition A of Autocar Expo, the French event dedicated to coaches and minibuses, was held

at Eurexpo in Lyon. Unlike Bordeaux, this fourth edition in Lyon brought together coach manufacturers and importers, with many OEMs at the centre of Hall 6. The advantage? Visitors (amounting to over 5 thousand) were able to do their “shopping” more easily and to meet with more than 90 exhibitors in order to plan 2015. In fact, a lot of changes are due to take place in France next year: transport operators have

The fourth edition of Autocar Expo took place in Lyon October 15-18. It’s the most important event dedicated to coaches and minibuses for intercity services in France

yet to “digest” the additional costs of Euro VI, but that’s not all. They’ll also need to equip new and used vehicles with breathalyser test with immobiliser, to invest in roll-on material (seat belts will be mandatory and there are still many unequipped vehicles in France), and in the possible purchase of platforms for

reduced mobility passengers, when required. These are major future projects that will be mandated by different regulations taking effect next year. The Bus Expo presented a good “mix” of vehicles to help operators make the right choice.

Most of the major international manufacturers (Man, Daimler, Scania, Volvo, Van Hool, VDL and Turkish companies Otokar, Isuzu and Temsa) came to Lyon to showcase what they had already presented at the international venue of the IAA in Hannover, and that we already covered in the October issue of BusToCoach Magazine. Therefore we are just going to focus on the products that are most attuned with the current trends in the French market, where good results are expected in the sectors of “midi” and “high capacity” vehicles. In fact, an increasing number of transport companies are looking into “midi” vehicles to “complement their range”, while interest in “high capacity” vehicles derives from France’s decision to liberalise interregional routes starting next year. It follows that there will be a demand for high capacity coaches without too many customisations, given that French carriers are not willing to spend more than necessary. For example, they are buying two-axle vehicles to avoid pay for the additional costs of a third axle. In terms of midi coaches, there was the superb Vehixel Indcar Next based on the Mercedes Atego chassis (7.7-litre engine with a

MERCEDES - Tourismo RHD L power of 238 hp) with 36 seats plus driver. Although special attention has been paid to the design of the passenger cabin, the Next’s real novelty is at the rear. Specifically the 8.1 m³ luggage compartment. Accessible both from the rear trunk and from the left side, the capacity of the luggage space can be increased by sliding forward the rear seats, as it’s done in some minivans. Next is also available as a school bus. Also in the ‘midi’ category, the new Moveo by Kapena imported in France by Hervouet Corporate Industry. Designed for school transport, Moveo is the first cousin of the Proway and the Proxy by Iveco Bus. With a length of 8.89 metres it is built on Eurocargo 100E22 YUTONG - EC 13

The wheelchair version is fit with dedicated equipment at the rear entrance. Mercedes come forward with the compact Tourismo K, 10.32 metres in length with 41 seats plus guide plus driver with Luxline upholstery. It is powered by the 7.7-litre OM 936 engine (354 hp). Similar format for the S 511 HD Setra ComfortClass on exhibit in the 10.44 metres version with 37 Voyage Plus two-colours seats plus two additional service seats and driver. The engine is the 10.7-litre 394 hp Mercedes OM 470. We turn now on “high capacity” vehicles for

long distances. In this context there was the Iveco Bus Magelys Line, designed, as its name indicates, for intercity transport. It features practical equipment, including a third door at level of the interior floor (right side) for the boarding of wheelchairs via a lift located in the trunk. In terms of high capacity three-axle coaches, Mercedes presented the 14-metre Tourismo RHD L. It has a capacity of 59 seats (Luxline) plus guide and driver. It comes with numerous safety features, including braking assistance system. It is powered by the 10.7-litre OM 470 (428 hp). MAN did not unveil the mystery regarding the future of the Lion’s City Intercity, represented at

At the Volvo area there was the 13.80-metre 9700 three-axle vehicle (with toilet) that can accommodate 61 passengers and with ample luggage capacity (11 m³). It is powered by the 10.8-litre Volvo engine with 430 hp. Bus Expo also provided ample space to coaches “Made in China”. Besides the presence of King Long, the Alsatian importer Dietrich Carebus Group presented the two-axle 13.06-metre Yutong EC 13. It has a luggage capacity of 7.1 m³ and it is powered by the 10.8-litre 326 hp MX Daf 11. The next Autocar Expo will take place in 2016.

ALL IN THE GAME

As always, the FIAA in Madrid was full of latest offerings. Spanish bodybuilders took centre stage, ready to benefit from the first signs of market recovery and with the intention to restrain the presence of international manufacturers

results. The event gathered 168 participating companies and attracted 10,129 professional visitors. Also, the exhibition area was increased by 6%. Good results were also registered in terms of participation by international operators: 31% of participating companies came from 18 foreign countries, and 10.5% of visitors came from 43 countries, including Portugal, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Mexico and Turkey. Despite the economic crisis that in 2012 recorded a decrease by almost 40% in registrations of new buses compared to the previous year (about 1,000 less), passenger transport remains an important sector of the Spanish economy, amounting to 5 billion Euros in annual revenue, 3,530 companies and over 125 thousand jobs. Signs of recovery in 2014 are proved by the fact that registrations increased by 10.8% during the first 10 months of the year. Encouraging signs also came from the central government that, through the Ministry of Transport, launched a 405 million Euros plan for the renovation of buses and trucks. Manufacturers are ready to take on every such opportunity, and they all came to FIAA to present their latest products. If, on the one hand, major international manufacturers mainly pre-

sented the same products seen two months earlier at the IAA in Hannover, on the other hand, national manufacturers and bodybuilders showed the will to be the protagonists of the hoped for economic recovery, and their intent was substantiated by a stream of new models, also offered for international markets. In 2014 Irizar celebrated the 125th anniversary of activity and expansion (the Irizar Group is made up of 11 companies throughout the world) and added the new electric traction i2e citybus to its range of coaches and intercity buses. The first unit of this new model has already been delivered to the city of San Sebastian in July and another two will be delivered in Barcelona in October as part of the European project ZeEUS. The i2e is a low-floor 12-metre long 100% electric bus, with aluminium structure that meets ECE-R66 standards and that can fit up to 73 passengers. It is driven by the Siemens Elfa2 electric traction system with a nominal power of 180 kW, powered by supercapacitors for the energy recovered during braking and sodium-nickel batteries with a total capacity of 376 kWh with a range of between 200-250 km, and that fully recharge in five hours. At FIAA Castrosua unrolled its across-the-board tactics articulated on a strategic plan based on three pillars: RTD development, international expansion and alliance policy. Demonstra-

ting the levels of achievements in terms of innovation, Castorsua presented three vehicles at FIAA: the New City, the Magnus.E and the Stellae. The New City is a low-floor city bus (the evolution of the City Versus) with bodywork that fit any chassis (like all Castrosua models) in lengths varying between 10.5 and 18.75 metres. The 12-metre long model on exhibit was built on Scania N94UB chassis and can transport 23 seated and 54 standing passengers. It is equipped with Hispacold air conditioning unit and Masats telescopic ramp on the second entrance. The low-entry Magnus.E for local and medium range services was built on MAN chassis instead, it featured an evolved aesthetic and is also available with CNG configuration. Finally, there was the 12.9-metre multipurpose intercity Stellae on Volvo B11R chassis fitting a maximum of up to 59 seats. As a demonstration of its ‘international expansion’ strategy Castrosua showcased one of the 93 City Versus buses on Iveco Citelis chassis with CNG engine, manufactured for various transport operators in Lithuania. Castrosua’s alliance policy with other companies to develop new products and new services took shape alongside the vehicles exhibited by the CAF Group intended for electromobility. For the time being the results of this collaboration are hybrid vehicles, but in the near future there will be full electric vehicles as well. Two models on display: the Vectia Teris.10 with second-generation hybrid system and the Vectia Veris.12 with CNG-electric system. The first is a 10.6-metre long low-floor hybrid-

series vehicle (there is also the 9.6-metre version) with 160 kW electric motor, diesel generator and batteries. This model is the new version of the previous Castrosua Tempus model and will be deployed for service in Madrid later this year. The second is a completely new 12-metre long vehicle with similar technology but with CNG generator (also available with a 180 kW diesel generator). Another important collaboration aimed at the internationalization of Castrosua has been established with Industry Carrocera Arbuciense, Indcar, for the commercial exchange of products and services as well as product development, production, marketing and after-sales. For its part, Indcar showcased its entire range, as it did at all major international shows this year, from Rimini (IT) to Lyon (FR), from Stockholm (SE) to Birmingham (UK). Therefore Indcar is proving its strong commitment to foreign markets, so much so that out of the 325 vehicles that will be produced in 2014, as many as 75% have been sold abroad, mainly in France, Italy, Germany, Sweden and Norway. Indcar has a well-established presence in these countries, and, starting this year, will also be present in the UK and in Ireland. Another Indcar’s strategic approach is diversification. Whereas it has historically been characterised by Iveco mechanics, the new models widen the choice to Mercedes, Man, and eventually to Renault chassis. Such was the case with the new 9.4-metre Next L9 with 37 seats, on exhibit in Madrid on MB Atego 1224L chassis (175 kW power output) and on

MAN N14 4850 (184 kW), both with permissible maximum weight of 12 tonne. There are also the 10-tonne MB and 10 and 15-tonne Iveco versions. Transition to Euro VI coincided with an aesthetic update of the various Mago2, Wing and Strada models seen on exhibit alongside the new low-entry Moby with 30 passenger seats and the Cityos with 39 seats made by French partner company Vehixel. Sunsundegui presented two new models: the SC5 and SB3. The first is a vehicle that is perfectly suited for intercity and medium and long distance touring travels. On exhibit in the 13-metre version built on the two-axle Volvo B11R chassis, it measures 3.5 metres in height and can transport 59 passengers plus guide and driver. Also built on Volvo chassis, the SB3 has the same length but inferior height, 3.3 metres, and is more suitable for intercity services. It is also available in the low-entry version. They are both based on a modular configuration as is the other Sunsundegui model, the touring coach SC7, on exhibit in Madrid in the 13.1-metre Volvo B11R and in the 15-metre Mercedes OC500 RF versions. A little gem was seen at the stand of Car-Bus. Net. Surrounded by minibuses of the Ravens and Spica series (with bodywork on Mercedes Sprinter), it was possible to see the new Wolta. It’s a 6-metre long low-floor microbus with 100% electric drive developed in collaboration with Italian company Rampini. Aesthetically very pleasing and with refined equipment, it can carry 22 passengers (half of which can be SETRA - S 519 HD

seated) plus wheelchair area across the entrance door. It makes use of a Siemens electric motor with 67 kW rated power and LiFePO4 Winston batteries with 68 or 100 kWh capacity. After the vicissitudes that led to the halting its activities, Noge showed up at FIAA with the name of Nogebus. The range of vehicles remains the same and in Madrid was represented by a 10-metre Touring H on MAN chassis with 250 hp front engine, a 10.5-metre Touring HD on Mercedes chassis with 300 hp rear engine and a 15-metre Titanium on MAN with 480 hp engine. Unvi displayed four new models, all of them with Euro VI emission standards engines. They included the Vega XL with 22+1 seats and the Vega GT with 19+1+1 both built on on 7.5-metre long Sprinter chassis. Then there was the 7.8-metre Compa T with 28+1 seats on Iveco Daily 70C17 mechanics and finally the 9.5-metre T Cimo on MAN chassis with 250 hp front engine and 37+1+1 seats configuration. The Beulas stand didn’t feature any new products but instead it focused on the number of models on display, featuring the entire range. From the 13.3-metre Jewel Scania to the 12.9 Aura on Volvo, the 12.2 on Scania and 12.7 on Iveco, from the small size 7.5-metre Gianino on Man to the 11-metre Cygnus on Volvo and 12.2 on Man, to the 12.7 Spica on Iveco. Same vehicles also by Ayats that lined up its double-decker buses in the Open Top version with the Barcelona Gray Line colours and in the Eclipse version measuring 14.2 metres on Scania K490 chassis.

Ferqui’s exhibition space was filled up with minibuses on Mercedes Sprinter or Iveco Daily. Starting with the Sprinter there were the 19-seater Sunset S3LS and the 16-seater Radius, and moving on to the Daily with the Sunset X with 19 seats at the Sunrise SL fitting 28 seats plus 2.2 cubic metres of luggage space. On Mercedes Sprinter the bodybuilding work by Integralia which recently was appointed as VanPartner by Mercedes-Benz. The 7.3 metres long minibus In-Tourism with 19+1+1 seats was on offer during the fair at 1,120 Euros a month for five years, 1,545 Euros for the In-Vip version. Also on display the In-Urban with 28 passenger capacity configuration and low-floor at the centre. So far we covered the offers by national manufacturers, but what about the offers by foreign brands? Major manufacturers obviously featured the same latest offers already presented at the Hannover international event last September, adding new Euro VI chassis features aimed at local bodybuilders. Mercedes lined its Tourismo 16 RHD/2 and Tourismo K models alongside the Citaro K and Sprinter City 65 for the urban section. At the forefront there was the OC 500 RF 1936 chassis with 260 kW OM 936 engine, MB GO 2508 automatic gearbox, braking system comprising of ESP and multifunction steering wheel. Representing the Setra brand there were: the double decker S 431 DT, the TopClass S 516 HDH, the ComfortClass S 519 HD and the MultiClass S 415 UL business. The remaining

7 Mercedes and Setra vehicles could be seen in the outdoor area, including the other Mercedes OC 500 RF 2543 chassis for vehicles up to 15 metres in length, with 315 kW OM 470 engine and secondary hydrodynamic retarder. Iveco Bus also featured a large selection of its models in Madrid. Equipped with toilet and sleeping box for the driver or with an additional entrance for the transport of passengers with limited mobility, there was the 12.8-metre Magelys with 400 hp Cursor 9 engine. Also, the 13-metre Crossway Line fitting 59 passengers and the 18 metres long Urbanway articulated citybus. Also, at the foreground, there was the new Daily Tourys with 19 seats capacity (Van of the Year 2015) alongside the bodywork by three Spanish bodybuilders Indcar, Ferqui and Unvi. Scania also made room for the work of Spanish coachbuilders on their chassis. Their stand featured an Irizar i6 12.37 on K 450 EB chassis and the Castrosua Versus City low-floor citybus on N 280 UB chassis with 280 hp CNG engine. Showing off all the details of Scania chassis, on display there was the K 410 EB with DC13 115da engine with 410 hp (302 kW) that meets Euro VI emission standards with SCR-only system (no EGR). In terms of original buses fully made by Scania, it was possible to see the 12-metre long Touring HD coach and the urban Citywide LE with parallel-hybrid drive system. The hybrid powertrain consists of the 9.2-litre 184 kW engine and the electric machine (motor and generator) rated at 150 kW with 650 Volt lithium-ion batteries.

MAN also came to Madrid with an hybrid drive vehicle: the 12-metre Lion’s City with a 184 kW diesel engine and two Siemens electric engines of 75kW each. Alongside, there were the 10.5-metre Lion’s City M and the 18.75-metre Lion’s City GL with CNG E2876 LUH07 engine with 310 hp. Representing MAN’s chassis, the Lion’s Chassis C0 26.480 EfficientLine for up to 15-metre long bodywork, with 480 hp engine and TipMatic Coach automatic transmission. Volvo presented its alternative drive offers: the Volvo 7900 Hybrid and the 7900 Electric Hybrid. The first was launched in 2010 and sold almost 1,800 units in 21 countries. It proved to consume up to 39% less diesel fuel than a conventional diesel bus. The second, on the other hand, is a new product that premiered only two months ago at the IAA in Hannover. Three such vehicles have been tested in Gothenburg confirming energy saving by 60% and one of these units was on display in Madrid. Equipped with Volvo I-SAM parallel hybrid system (240 hp diesel engine and electric motor with 160 kW) and double batteries to ensure departure, it works in full electric mode 70% of the time. Presentation of the 100% electric is announced for 2015. In terms of chassis, Volvo showcased two examples of vehicles bodied in Spain. An Irizar i3 intercity bus on B8RLE 6x2 chassis and a Sunsundegui SC7 on B11R 460CV Coach Top 6x2. Solaris came from Poland with its new Urbino 12, which will go into production in early 2015 (see article in the November issue ) and with Auto Cuby with Vip bodywork on Sprinter 519. The sole Turkish manufacturer exhibiting in Madrid, Otokar, represented in Spain by Somauto, lined up the new Euro VI versions of its range. Among them, the Navigo T (touring coach with 31 seats), the 9.2-metre Vectio U LE (intercity bus with configuration of 33 seated and 12 standing passengers plus wheelchair area) and Kent C measuring 12 metres (low-floor citybus with room for 33 seats, 60 standing passengers and wheelchair area). Finally, Chinese company King Long was present with its E12 with Eaton hybrid system, 165 kW Cummins engine, electric motor with 44 kW peak and 340 Volt lithium-ion batteries. Also seen on display: touring coach C12 with FPT Cursor 9 engine with 294 kW and shorter models C9 and C10 with Cummins. THE SINO-EUROPEAN ELECTRIC BUS

100% electric bus Ebusco 2.0 arriving in Stavenger, Norway. Even better than the previous model tested with success on Northern European roads

resented at the IAA last September, the P 2.0 version of the Ebusco full electric bus has been completely renewed compared to the YTP-1 model shown two years ago in the same venue. It should be noted that during this time the 100% electric bus by Ebusco

was subjected to numerous road tests to verify its operational stability, also during extreme climate conditions. Knowing that about 300 of these buses have been deployed for over 100 thousand kilometres each on the streets of China did not suffice. In fact, in collaboration

with Veolia Transport (and also in partnership with Dutch financial corporation ING), last March Ebusco carried out a six days (12 hours daily) vehicle test in Helsinki, Finland, where external temperatures ranged between -12 and +2 degrees. Two months later it was deployed in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and then it traveled more than 200 km a day for 15 days on the lines of Stadtwerke Bonn GmbH in Germany. Results were always good. With the new Ebusco 2.0 the actual operatio-

nal phase is unrolling. Boreal Transport purchased two vehicles that soon will be put into service in Stavenger, Norway. Built in the production plants of Chinese ma-

nufacturer Golden Dragon, the Ebusco 2.0 features a new look, full aluminium body (lighter), battery management system (BMS), further energy saving measures and increased transport capacity (up to 84 pas-

sengers, 35 seated). All components are supplied by the most reliable international brands, from ZF to Wabco, to Knorr-Bremse and Actia, to name a

few. All electric components are made by Zhuhai Yintong New Power Tech, on behalf of Ebusco. Mounted on the left side of the rear overhang, there is the water-cooled asynchronous electric motor with power rating of 90 kW (150 kW maximum) and a torque of 850 Nm (2,500 Nm maximum). It is powered by 12 packs of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with 700 or 900 Ah density and a total capacity of 242 and 311 kWh respectively. Some batteries are located in the rear section of the roof while others are housed behind the tailgate in the rear end. The manufacturer claims that they have a running range of 250 kilometres for the first and 300 kilometres for the second. Also thanks to the energy recovery system during braking. On request, the batteries can be supported by the Battery Management System (BMS) that

indicates the operating parameters and the charge levels to the driver through a special display. Batteries can be recharged 100% in about an hour and a half via the onboard charger system. The roof of the Ebusco 2.0 also houses the climate unit powered at 300-380 Volt DC, with cooling capacity of 30 kcal/h (28 heating) and R407c coolant. Located at the High Tech Automotive Campus in Helmond, the Netherlands, the company Ebusco focuses on the development, marketing and sale of full electric buses in Europe. Future projects include also the possibility of manufacturing its electric buses in the Netherlands. In addition to complete buses, Ebusco also sells all necessary electrical equipment for single and multiple charging systems in Europe.

LOW ENTRY BUSINESS

Setra extends the MultiClass 400 Euro VI range with the S 415 LE business for long-distance transport. Also available in the 13-metre long S 416 LE version

year after the launch of the SeONE tra UL business vehicles of the MultiClass 400 range, the Low Entry versions make their debut with the 12.3-metre S 415 LE business and the 13-metre long S 416 LE business. Designed for optimised rural-service bus transport, the models of the MultiClass Low Entry business are practical and functional.

They are also characterised by an economical acquisition cost, optimal performance and low maintenance and operating costs. Manufactured in the Setra plant in Neu-Ulm, the vehicles are in Class II for speeds up to 100 km/hour (class I on request) and they are build on a raised-floor modular system basis, unlike the Citaro LE. The floor is lowered at 430 mm in the front

section between the first and the second entrances. The rear section, identical to that of Setra UL, instead is raised by three steps at the second entrance. Both entrances are equipped with a 1,150 mm wide single-wing outward-swinging door. It is also optionally available with a manually operated folding ramp mounted on the second entrance with double-wing door (1,390 mm wide). The interiors are characterised by simplicity. Such as for example the overhead luggaDIMENSIONS

ge racks (open, full-length and rather wide) made of metallic tubes with exposed bolts. Ceiling, as well as the side trim panels, are easy-to-clean. Customers can choose from a wide range of fabric designs and materials, as well as various colours for the grab rails. There are various seating configurations, all fitted on high bases above the central corridor and arranged in two rows, also in the front section of the passenger compartment. The configuration with wheelchair space fits 45 seats plus four fold up seats (49+4 in the 13-metre version). The cockpit is the same as for the UL business, therefore raised at 860 mm and separated from the rest of the passenger compartment by a rear wall (standard) and by a low door on the side. Available on request it comes with a fully enclosed driver’s cab with diver’s cab door. Driver ’s instruments are those of widely proven Evobus modular system with ergonomically designed cockpit. Additional stowage space for the driver can be obtained in the side compart-

ment above the driver’s seat. The drivetrain is equipped with the compact six-cylinder in-line 7.7-litre Mercedes OM 936 engine (Euro VI) with powers of 220 and 260 kW, capable of climbing steep roads. As for the transmission, it is possible to choose the basic Mercedes GO 190 six-speed manual transmission or between the automatic GO 250-8 and the automatic ZF EcoLife and Voith Diwa.6 as optional. The Multiclass range currently makes up for 35% of Setra sales. About 5,300 vehicles of the Multiclass Series 400 have been sold in the last seven years and 11 thousand of the previous MultiClass 300 have been sold in fifteen years of production.
