56 eCitaro buses. Further seven units will be delivered this year while the remaining ones are planned for 2020. With their electric-bus switch-over plan, ESWE Verkehr and the city of Wiesbaden are moving closer towards achieving their ambitious aim of being the first town in Germany to implement the vision of emission-free public transport. The consultancy team at Daimler Buses eMobility Consulting are assisting ESWE in the conversion of their fleet to electromobility solutions. «This handover of the fully-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro», underlines the manufacturer, «is proof of how Daimler Trucks & Buses is moving a step closer toward its aim of only supplying new vehicles equipped with tank-to-wheel CO2-neutral drive systems from 2039 in the European, Japanese and NAFTA markets».

ELECTRIC BUSES IN SWEDEN

olvo Buses will deliver 157 articulated electric buses to Transdev Sweden starting in 2020. The buses will operate on different routes in Gothenburg even in areas or zones with special restrictions. All of the buses belong to the recently launched Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated. This model can carry up to 150 passengers with an energy consumption that is 80 per cent lower than the corresponding diesel bus. The vehicles will be charged at quick-charge stations along the route, using the common charging interface OppChargeTM. In addition to the electric buses, Transdev has ordered 27 Euro VI buses for regional operations, running on biodiesel.

he manufacturer from Södertälje has developed a T coach for the Swedish cross-country national team. Equipped with a waxing trailer, the vehicle has various

ergonomic and technological solutions, such as solar panels to power LED lighting and other devices (they will produce 1,000 kWh per year) and the infrared heating system which, compared to traditional convection heaters, reduce energy requirements by 60%. RAMPINI AND CAETANO BUS AGREEMENT

DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

The two manufacturers have signed a commercial agreement aimed at extending the offer of electricpowered buses on the European market

The Solaris Urbino range is equipped with new advanced driver assistance systems: from the Collision Mitigation System to the MobilEye Shield+, up to the MirrorEye

agreements. Rampini and CaetanoBus signed an agreement which provides for the integration of the ranges in their respective markets. Rampini is incorporating CaetanoBus’ eCity Gold 10.7m and 12m in its product portfolio as E100 and E120 for the Italian market. CaetanoBus will incorporate instead Rampini’s E60 and E80 in its range as e.City Gold 6 and e.City Gold 8 for the Portuguese market. «The new zero-e-

gly common feature in the latest generation buses. This is due also to the EU legislation which has enforced many of these systems in the list of mandatory equipment for new buses starting from 2022. On this issue, Solaris Bus & Coach presented innovations for the Urbino range starting with the CMS (Collision Mitigation System). The system, already used on touring buses, initiates automatic braking in the event of a potential collision detected by a special radar. At that point, the system goes into braking mode, reducing speed and alleviating the consequences of a potential impact. Another device is the MobilEye Shield+, which enhances visibility thanks to external cameras. It enables to detect pedestrians and cyclists who can not be seen from the

he growing demand for electric buses on T European markets encourages producers to expand the offer, also with commercial

mission buses E100 and E120», commented the General Manager of Rampini, Fabio Magnoni, «allow us to provide an increasingly wide range of innovative and sustainable solutions in response to the growing environmental awareness that meets the goals of the decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitalisation enshrined in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Electric mobility plays a crucial role in the transport landscape of the new millennium». «With this partnership,” stated CaetanoBus CEO, Jorge V. Pinto, “CaetanoBus strengthens and expands its portfolio of electric mobility products, thus taking another step to create a shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transport solutions. We are confident that this will also increase the competitiveness of electric vehicles in the European market, accelerating the transition to zero-emission mobility». he driver assistance and support functioT nalities, the so-called ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), are an increasin-

mirrors, warning with acoustic and visual signals. It also reacts to lane changes or when the appropriate distance to the preceding vehicle is not maintained and alerts the driver. The device can recognize speed limits and informs the driver on the display. The MirrorEye replaces the regular rear-view mirrors bringing several advantages. The cameras considerably widen the field of view and improve vehicle aerodynamics. Furthermore, screens and cameras always display the optimal scope regardless of the driver’s height. Cameras are heated, so they do not freeze nor fog up and are also easier to clean thanks to their small size.

The Volvo 9700 DD, a model bodied by the Finnish Carrus Delta, will be launched next year. It is designed primarily for the Nordic market new arrival is on the way for the VolA vo Buses family. We are almost at the launch, which will probably take place at the beginning of next year. The unborn bus is the Volvo 9700 DD, a model that will debut among the touring coaches of the 9000 series. The vehicle is a double-decker designed primarily for the Nordic markets. The body is manufactured by the Finnish company Car-

rus Delta OY, which has been working with Volvo Buses for years and can be considered the main Scandinavian coachbuil-

der. Volvo Buses revealed just a few information about the 9700 DD double-decker bus: it is over 4 meters (4.25 to be precise) high and it is powered by the Volvo D11K 11-liter 460-hp engine. In addition to being powered by diesel fuel, the engine is certified to run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and B100 biodiesel. «Even now, before the launch» said Niklas Orre, Vice President Coach Sales at Volvo Buses, «there is already a considerable demand for the 9700 DD from our customers, which proves that the new model is highly attractive on the market». «When it is launched» added Orre, «the 9700 DD will be part of the Volvo’s product range for express coaches together with the 9700 and the award-winning 9900». CIRCONTROL

EBERSPÄCHER

ircontrol launches Raption 150, a new C model of the Raption’s fast charger range that can charge 150 kW at 600

volts, a voltage that is suitable for electric buses. It is suitable for charging at terminal stations where the bus can stop longer to charge 35kW in fifteen minutes and then complete the journey to the other terminal station. Thanks to its modular technology, Raption 150 allows a high uptime as well as scalability from 100kW to 150kW and simultaneous DC charge by dividing the available power. The gun locking function and the cable floating design result in a reduction of cable breaking risk and a front locked door that enables an easy access to the inside of the charger. The 8-inch touch-screen provides readable instructions and a courtesy light that increases comfort.

VALEO

aleo’s new REVO-E HP R744 is also designed for hybrid and electric buses. It is a fully electric roof-mounted air conditioner equipped with a heat pump function. The zero-emission system operates with the natural refrigerant R744 at external temperatures between -20 and 44 degrees Celsius. The fully automatic system selects the appropriate operating mode, switching from air conditioning to heat pump or de-icing function that activates below an external temperature of 5 degrees Celsius, preventing it from icing up that can happen with traditional heat pumps. Valeo’s engineers then developed Thermo HV, a high-voltage heater for electric buses with a fully adjustable thermal power. Small, light and noiseless, it can fit even into the tightest spaces. The Thermo HV modular heater is part of a comprehensive portfolio of Valeo heating units which range between 12 and 32 kW.

V

nvironmental sustainabiE lity, climate comfort and increased safety are the edges

of the AC 136 HP CO2, Eberspchär’s new electric roofmounted air-conditioning system for hybrid and electric buses. The use of R744 refrigerant (carbon dioxide) ensures an optimal climate comfort in the passenger compartment in temperate climates at all times of the year. “Electric heat pumps draw heat from the ambient air with a high COP value - Coefficient of Perfor-mance”, explained Eberspächer. “In this way, they not only heat the out blown air much mo-re efficiently than other electric or water heaters, but also reduce the load on the bus batte-ry.” CO2 then allows heat pumps to operate in lower temperatures than chemically produced refrigerants. Furthermore, it is not flammable or toxic compared to other natural refrigerants such as ammonia or hydrocarbons. They will be offered on European markets from 2021.

LUMINATOR

he Luminator Technology Group T includes ten brands specialised in passenger information and video se-

curity systems. Among the innovations launched at Busworld in Brussels, there are new digital e-paper displays, which also work in locations without a power supply. They are specially designed for public transport networks and they display real-time trip information through an easyto-read illuminated design that emits no light pollution. The built-in software enables to monitor, manage and update all signs in the system from a central location. The use of solar power also reduce energy consumption and costs. «The largest project of this type», said Luminator Technology, «is currently being implemented in Austin, Texas, where by the end of the year over 140 32- and 13-inch e-paper displays will be installed at bus and subway stations for the operator Capital Metro».

VAN HOOL COACHES ON THE CIRCUIT On the Mortefontaine circuit, the full range of touring coaches was tested. It was the right occasion to take stock of the Van Hool’s global development strategies

ust two weeks after Busworld Europe, J where Van Hool focused on his latest innovations (see article on the following

pages), the Belgian manufacturer gathered together the international press to take stock of its production strategies and test the behaviour of the entire touring coach range on the Mortefontaine circuit in France, both on the parabolic oval track (3 km) and on the external road circuit (5.2 km) and in the area which was specifically set up for maneuverability tests. But first things first. Van Hool has proven itself as one of the leading independent manufacturers in the European industrial vehicle manufacturer panorama, with an annual production of about 1,300 buses and coaches, and 3,500 trailers, semi-trailers and tank containers, with an annual turnover (2018) of 558 million euros. Bus production is provided by the central

factory in Koningshooikt, in Belgium and the Skopje plant in Macedonia, in operation since July 2013. In Belgium, about 200 buses and 250 coaches of the TX series are manufactured annually. In Skopje, around 850 coaches are instead produced, which represents practically the entire EX and TX series for the American market including the new CX54E electric coach presented at Busworld. It should be underlined that Van Hool has been on the North American market since 1987 where, through its local supplier ABC Companies, it has sold over 10 thousand vehicles, gaining a market share of 35% in the private sector. To build a significant presence also in the public sector, which is estimated to have a potential of 5/7 thousand vehicles per year, Van Hool is completing the construction of a high-capacity plant (similar to that of Skopje) in Morristown,

Tennessee, which should be completed in the first half of 2020. The investment is worth $ 47 million. As for the range of Van Hool touring coaches offered on European markets, there are two product lines: the EX, characterized by flexibility of application and cost savings, and the most luxurious TX, used for long-distance services.Common feature is that all models are equipped with new generation DAF/Paccar MX engines, desired transmission and 315/80 R 22.5 tires.

EX - RANGE

The flexibility of the EX

With the recent addition of the 10.7-meter EX11, the number of models of the EX series has increased to nine. They are divided into three different heights (H, M and L) and four lengths, identified in the initials by the number of rows of seats (nominal). We thus start from the L, with a total height of 3,545 mm and three lengths: 10.7 meters (11 rows of seats), 12.5 meters (15 rows) and 13.2 meters (16 rows). They are followed by the M, with a height of 3.675 mm and a nominal capacity of 15 or 16 rows of seats. Finally, the high-floor H with a height of 3,805 mm, now available not only in

the two previous two-axle versions but also in the 14.2-meter (17 rows) and 13.4-meter (16row) three-axle versions. The MX11 engines with power output from 251 to 330 kW (341-449 hp) are mounted on the two-axle EX which can be coupled with the manual GO 230, automatic ZF or automated ZF Traxon gearboxes. The three-axle versions are powered by the 355-kW (483 hp) MX13 coupled with the Traxon or the Allison automatic transmission.

Comfort with the TX

The five models of the TX series are all three-axle coaches powered by the MX13

engine with 355 or 390 kW (483 or 530 hp) coupled to ZF Traxon or Allison automatic transmission. Optional accessories to increase passenger comfort are limitless. The TX Acron is the lowest in the category (3.6 meters high) and is offered in the lengths of 13.2, 14 and 15 meters (16, 17 and 18 rows of seats). The TX Astron is the variant that has been raised to 3.73 meters in order to increase the luggage compartment capacity of the two longer versions. Same height for the Astronef TX, that is characterized by rows of seats arranged like a parterre, i.e. on a platform sloped towards the back. In addition to the variant with 16 and

TX/TDX - RANGE

17 seat rows, is available also the 12.3-meter version with 15 rows. The TX Altano is available in three different lengths: 13.2 meters (17 rows), 14 meters (18 rows) and 15 meters (19 rows). They are characterised by a lowered driving position and an increased height of the luggage compartment whose capacity varies depending on the models, from 12.3 to 17.4 cubic meters. There are also two TDX versions of the Altano which are 13.5 meters (20 rows) and 14.6 meters (21 rows) long and which feature a longer front overhang that allows to mount a row of three seats or a wheelchair space behind the driver. Finally, there are the classic TDX Astromega double-decker buses in the 13.1-meter (25 rows) and 14.1-meter (27 rows) lengths. Six models of the EX and 5 TX/TDX series with different powertrain have been tested on the Mortefontaine circuits, proving uniform driving stability (particularly good for the double-decker buses), good internal noiselessness (obviously better on the TX) and brilliance in the responses/reactivity of the engines. However, it should be noted that each vehicle was fitted with the most powerful version and the vehicles run empty, without passengers on board. THE FESTIVAL OF ELECTRIC BUSES Moving the location from Kortrijk to Brussels was good for the 25th edition of Busworld Europe. The number of exhibitors and visitors has increased. However, not many innovations for the coaches

DAIMLER BUSES

managers of Daimler Buses already confirm three-digit orders and vehicles are already running in regular service in Berlin, Hamburg, mobility system, starting with the full electric Oslo and Ystad (Sweden). The eCitaro can be supplied with a maximum of 12 battery packs for a ran-ge of about 170 km. From 2020, the articulated version equipped with 145 seats will be available first and then equipped with solid-state batteries (lithium polymer batteries). In 2021, an eCitaro equipped with the next gene-ration of batteries will be launched and then from 2022 there will be a bat-tery-powered bus fitted with Range Extender (a hydrogen-based fuel cell that powers a high voltage battery with electricity). As far as touring coaches is concerned, it is worth mentioning that the 8.5-meter Sprinter Travel 75 was launched. It has a weight of MERCEDES E-CITARO 68 quintals, it is fitted with MERCEDES SPRINTER TRAVEL 75 SETRA S 531 19+1 seats, OM 651 163hp engine and 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission.

ore space resulted in more exhibitors: 511 compared to 376 last year. M More accessibility resulted in more visitors: they increased from 37.274 to 39.798. These figures prove that having moved the headquarters from Kortrijk

to Brussels was a valid choice and therefore the success of Busworld Europe. This 25th edition (as it was also two years ago) was focused on new proposals for electric mobility that have been at the center of the offer of almost all bus manufacturers and in all sizes, from minibuses to articulated vehicles. Many of these had already been showed, however, last June at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Stockholm. There is just little to say about the proposals dedicated to medium- and longdistance services that historically had a leading role in previous editions. There was no real innovation, just some aesthetic finish, some range extensions with new lengths, some engine updates but nothing more. If you are looking for some innovation, you can find it in the safety systems offered, starting with cameras replacing the traditional rear-view mirrors. As in every other edition of Busworld Europe, the award of the title “Coach of the Year”, which went to MAN Lion’s Coach this year, has drawn attention to touring coaches. As for many prizes awarded for various reasons (about twenty), the high rate of inflation and the consequent loss of value must be underlined.

SCANIA

he new generation Citywide range is the T top product of Scania’s regular line service transport offer. It has been modernised

starting from passenger capacity, comfort and driveability. It is now characterized by a lighter and completely new interior design, with wider side windows and a higher ceiling. It is obviously available with different fuel supply solutions. The top product at Busworld was the Citywide LF electric bus. It is 12 meters long and it features a powerful 300-kW engine with Scania oil jet cooling system. The eight batteries are equally divided between the roof and the rear overhang so as to maintain a lower center of gravity for better maneuverability and

driveability. It can carry up to 95 passengers on board and it has a range of 80-150 km. On display, was a model equipped with a 300 kW reverse pantograph mounted on the roof for fast charging. At the stand was exhibited also an Interlink intercity bus, recently offered also with LNG supply.

The first one ERDUMAN manufactures the 9.3-meter Glory HD with 37 passenger capacity on the Mercedes Atego truck chassis. Thanks to the front engine positioning, it exploits the space on the rear overhang to offer a large luggage compartment which is accessible on three sides. The Calista M from Iles Bus, ILES BUS that can be built on both Mercedes Atego and MAN TGL, is similar but a little bit shorter (9 meters and 35 passengers). Erduman relies instead on its Greek partner Ermis Bus to offer the Tourer touring series, also built on Mercedes Atego and always 9 meters ERENER long.
