Among the various safety systems installed on board, there are the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). To develop the electric double-decker bus, Hyundai worked for 18 months on a project supported by the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, which began in 2017. “The double-decker electric bus is an eco-friendly vehicle optimized for environmentally friendly global trends,” said ByoungWoo Hwang, Head of Commercial Vehicle Advanced Engineering Team at Hyundai Motor. “This will not only improve the quality of the air, but will also contribute greatly to easing commuting hour traffic congestion by accommodating more passengers on board. “ Nevertheless, the manufacturer has still to reveal when and in which countries the new Hyundai double-decker bus will be sold.

The transport company of Barcelona (TMB) will purchase 254 eco-friendly buses thanks to a loan from the European Investment Bank

he Catalan metropolis wants to reduce T the emissions of its public transport system. To this end, TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona) aims to purchase 254 eco-friendly buses. The project is funded with a 73.5 million euro loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The loan will make it possible to replace diesel buses and older natural gas models with newer and lower-emission alternatives. Specifically, 116 electric buses, 63 hybrid buses and 75 vehicles with a modern natural gas engine will be purchased. In addition, 20 double-decker buses with diesel engines will be replaced by vehicles with hybrid drive. The first 105 buses are scheduled to go into regular service in 2019. In 2020, 75 additional vehicles will follow, and in the following year 74 vehicles will be added

to the fleet. Public buses are becoming increasingly popular in Barcelona. According to data provided by TMB, 203 million passengers were transported in 2018. In the last six years, the number has increased by 17%. With the new buses, TMB aims to improve the quality and reliability of the service provided to customers. The on-board information system and the charging stations, built with funds from the loan, will also be improved. Around 1,000 new jobs will be created during vehicle production. «Electric transport involves higher initial investment costs in terms of vehicles and infrastructure» underlines Enric Cañas, TMB’s managing director. «Appropriate financing from public transport authorities and financial institutions is vital».

PROVENTIA

he Finnish company Proventia, which is devoted to emission control, has retrofitted the T hybrid double-decker buses branded Transport for London (TfL), the London Transport Authority, for the circulation in the ‘London Ultra Low Emission Zone’ (ULEZ), the ultra

low emission area of London. The 306 retrofitted Routemasters are diesel-electric buses powered by Euro V engines. They are fitted with Proventia NOxBuster City system that reduces emissions below the Euro VI level and makes the buses ULEZ compliant. The installations were made by Excalibre Technologies, a local partner of Proventia. “Retrofitting existing buses to be ULEZ compliant”, said Tom Cunnington of TfL, “has allowed us to create ten low emission bus zones, reducing harmful NOx and PM emissions by 90%”. The Proventia NOxBuster City retrofit system was specially developed for low exhaust temperatures in urban driving and was approved in London for both ULEZ areas and for the CVRAS certification (Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme) for various bus makes and models. In addition to retrofitting the new Routemasters, Proventia is making ULEZ upgrades for various bus operators in London. The technology is available for retrofitting city buses and coaches across the whole UK. The same NOxBuster City systems are also approved for German retrofit projects.

ore than a vehicle, it is a ‘Concept’. This is what Scania displayed at the Uitp summit to represent its idea of transport in the cities of the future. With the acronym NXT, in fact, you can identify a modular vehicle that can cover all uses in urban areas, from freight transport to waste collection and of course passenger transport, thanks to the front and rear traction modules that are not connected to each other and therefore allow different lengths of wheelbase. It features electric traction and autonomous

drive. The passenger version on display at the Uitp exhibition was 8 m long and it weighted less than 8 tons. The cylindrical cell batteries mounted under the floor enable an estimated range of 245 km, given the current state of the art of energy accumulation technology. Thanks to the absence of the driver’s seat, all the interior space can be used to accommodate up to 55 passengers, 20 of which are seated. Serial production is scheduled for 2030.

UP

for all past editions, the international interest for the GloAS bal Public Transport Summit 2019, organized by the UITP (International Association of Public Transport) in Stockholm at the beginning of June, was unquestionable. The numbers are clear: 474 exhibitors from 46 countries, over 15 thousand visitors and 53 congress sessions attended by 300 speakers and 2,700 participants who interacted to take stock of the state of the art of public transport, the main theme of the event which has been developed in all its aspects. From customer service to the improvement of life quality in cities, from mobility as a service to finance, up to transport innovation. The commitment to bus innovation was taken on by the numerous component specialists, who launched latest generation engines, alternative drive systems, batteries for electric buses, electric charging systems and hydrogen fuel cells, just to mention a few aspects. This was even more evident for bus manufacturers, who focused on the quality of the vehicles on display rather than on the quantity. The vehicles were almost all electrically-powered and there were also many new proposals on display. The next UITP Summit will be held in Melbourne, Australia, in 2021.

OTOKAR

to now, the Turkish manufacturer’s electric buses were only represented by the midibus transformed by the French PVI. Otokar has now decided to gradually enter this market segment by manufacturing a new generation of full electric city buses. The first vehicle is the 12-meter e-Kent C which is fully lowered. Compared to the well-known diesel version, the exterior and interior design has been completely changed, as well as the driving position which features a smart digital dashboard and video system instead of the conventional rear-view mirrors. Traction is ensured by the ZF axle with 250 kW wheel-hub motors, powered by 300 kWh lithium ion batteries. As far as the braking energy recovery system (1520%) is concerned, the declared range is 300 km and the time for a full depot-charge is four hours. The e-Kent C will be available in Europe in 2020.

manufacturer exhibited the final version. In Stockholm, a roadmap was specified with a first phase of tests in operation at the beginning of 2020 in five European countries in collaboration with important transport operators. Serial production is scheduled in the second half of the same year. The new Lion’s City E features 29 seats and is powered by a central electric motor on the rear axle with power output from 160 to 270 kW, and 480 to 640-kWh batteries mounted on the roof. The range varies from 200 to 270 km and it is charged at the depot via CCS connectors.

ith a well-established range of electric buses (the 9- and 18-meter Urbino Electric and the 12- and 18-meter Trollino), the Polish manufacturer completes its offer for eMobility with the zero-emission Urbino 12 hydrogen-powered bus. Using the fuel cells on board the vehicle, through a reverse electrolysis process, hydrogen generates electricity that is sent directly to the transmission. The only residual products are heat and water vapor. The Urbino 12 Hydrogen features 60-kW fuel cells and gas is stored at a pressure of 350 bar in five composite tanks of 312 liters each, for a total of 36.8 kilos of hydrogen, which enable an operating range of about 350 km. Traction is ensured by the ZF AVE 130 electric portal axle with two 125-kW electric motors. It is fitted with a small Solaris High Power battery to help the fuel cells during energy demand peaks. The battery is charged through the energy generated in excess or from braking recovery, as well as via Plug-in charging. On show was also the Urbino 12 Electric.

360-degree view of the state of the art A in public transport was exhibited by Mercedes-Benz with the 12-meter electric eCitaro (the 18-meter version will be available in 2020). Mercedes underlined also the achievements in terms of low emissions obtained by its traditional solutions, all powered by diesel or gas engines (including biogas or biomethane) and available also with additional hybrid modules in order to improve efficiency. The eCitaro, which entered the market last year, features a ZF axle with electric motors which are located on the wheels, up to 12 lithium ion battery modules (292 kWh) and a thermal management system that ensures maximum energy efficiency.

With eMobility Consulting, MercedesBenz also intervenes on all aspects of the electric transport system, from power supply to charging infrastructures, from service planning to telematic management.

he 9700 tested featured a T 55+1+1 Select seating arrangement and no toilet. The

seats are fixed on a platform which is raised 20 cm from the corridor, sloped in the first front part. They are original Volvo seats, reclining and complete with fake leather headrests, folding armrest, two-point safety belts, double handles and, on the back, small table, footrest, small net and USB plug every pair of seats. The open luggage racks have a total capacity of 1.3 cubic meters and include, in the upper part, Led lights for indirect lighting of the passenger compartment. On the bottom there are the service-sets with adjustable rectangular air vents, reading LED lights and speakers. Air conditioning is ensured by a 31-kW roof-mounted system

with separate regulation for passengers and driver. Heating is provided by convectors powered by a 30-kW Spheros. It features two 19-inch Bosch flat-screen monitors, one embedded in the front body above the driver’s seat and the other one

on the right luggage rack, above the stairwell. For passenger luggages, the luggage compartment has a capacity of almost 10 cubic meters (without the toilet), accessible from doors with pantograph opening.

More specifically, safety systems have been improved with the greater strength of the Front Impact Protection (FIP) for protection against front impacts and the availability of the Driver Alert Support (DAS), a driver alarm system that monitors the vehicle’s movements and sounds if the driver is tired or not focused on the road. The new 9900 series for high-end touring coaches features the same characteristics. T h e Vo l v o 9700 is more versatile and can feature a wide range of equipment to adapt to mid-range or touring line services, starting with standard Select (base) and Superior solutions. The Volvo 9700 tested featured a Select equipment and was 12.4 meters long. The range also includes 13.1-meter two-axle and 14-meter three-axle versions.

owered to 940 millimeters L from the ground, the driving position offers a suitable space

for the driver to whom is reserved a comfortable Isri revolving seat, which can be adjusted longitudinally by 230 mm. The design of the dashboard has not been revolutionised too much, with the exception of the full-width eyelid upper dashboard and the wavy right-hand side (overlooked by a handrail which features a different design) with a 54-liter cockpit-fridge, and includes a dashboard with squared blocks to house the instrumentation on board. At the center there is the built-in panel with six pointer indicators (tachometer, speedometer, pressure gauges, water thermometer and fuel level) and the 6.5-inch LCD display for driving information and diagnosis. On the right, there is the display for the GPS and for the rear-view camera, supported by the digital tachograph, the control panel for the Bosch audio/video system

and air-conditioning controller. Visibility is excellently ensured by double rear-view mirrors, which are electrically adjustable, heated

and foldable. The sunshade is electrically controlled and most of it is screened, while the steering wheel is available in two sizes.

Ballasted to just over 18 tons (for the countries that permit it, the total weight reaches 19,500 kg), the 12.4-meter vehicle recorded more than satisfying consumption, in the wake of those recorded by the Mercedes and Setra vehicles trialled so far. The unbeaten record remains the one of the Scania Touring (see table at the end of the article). 4.63 km were travelled on average with a liter of fuel, with an average speed of almost 79 km/hour. As always, it must be underlined that consumption was calculated including the amount of AdBlue used by the SCR system to reduce exhaust emissions. For the 9700 it was equal to 6% of the fuel consumed and it therefore led to a 3% increase in the total consumption (cost per average equivalence). The powertrain is well proportionate with the intermediate calibration of the 10.8-liter D11K engine with power output of 430 hp (316 kW) and coupled to the Volvo I-Shift automated gearbox. The reduction ratio is 2.64 and enables to travel in last gear at 100 km/hour keeping the engine speed at around 1,400 rpm. The Dynamic Chassis Lowering has certainly contributed to the limitation of consumption. It lowers the vehicle by 20 mm at speeds above 80 km/h, thus reducing air resistance. And the I-See management system uses map data to preview route topography and optimize acceleration, gear changes and braking while driving with cruèè
