VOLVO AND ABB FOR THE EXPO IN HANOVER

ON

April 5-6, Hannover Messe drew nearly 220,000 visitors from around the world, all looking for the latest innovations in industrial technology. The visitors were transported around the site on a new emission-free hybrid shuttle bus, powered by ABB’s high-power chargers. The vehicle was supplied by Göttinger Verkehrsbetriebe (GV) and is part of the fleet of Üstra Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG (ÜSTRA). The high-power 300PD bus charger delivers 300kW of charging power and can recharge a battery in three to six minutes. It is based on OppCharge, a concept for electric bus charging with direct current using a pantograph mounted on the infrastructure for end point charging. This allows buses to be charged at the end of the line, without impacting on the normal operation of the route. The Hannover Messe project comes a year after ABB was commissioned to supply its high-power 200P chargers to charge the city of Goettingen’s public bus transport system, which uses three Volvo electric hybrid buses to transport more than 50,000 passengers every day.

TWERENBOLD FAITHFUL TO VDL

now the city intends to turn all nine school buses of its fleet into more sustainable options. The 12-meter Scania Interlink ‘low decker’ offers 51 seats with safety belts and additional space for standing passengers. Ghent school buses are equipped with blind cameras as well as side and rear cameras. The driver is informed of the presence of pedestrians and cyclists nearby through acoustic alarms and displays on the dashboard and on both front uprights. Ghent has set itself the ambitious goal of reducing carbon emissions in transport by 40% (compared to 2007) by 2030. In addition to the four new buses, the city has commissioned 11 Scania trucks with gas engines to be delivered this spring. The first gas-powered truck was a Scania P 340 with cranes and containers acquired in 2016. The city’s sustainable mobility plan, launched in 2016, is already paying off with registered nitrogen dioxide levels in the centre declining by 20 percent.

The order has a potential of almost 800 vehicles (of which about 200 are in firm order) for a maximum amount of € 400 million, financed 100% by Île-de-France Mobilités. The tender is divided into three batches, each of which gives rise to a framework agreement of two years and a maximum amount of € 133 million. The vehicles are electric buses in the standard 12-meter size. The maxi order was won by three French manufacturers: Heuliez Bus (CNH Industrial Group), Bluebus (Bolloré Group) and Alstom. The first order of about 150 vehicles, distributed over the three batches, will be processed as soon as possible. Deliveries should be made from the end of 2020 until completion in 2022. The aim of this tender, launched in January 2018, is to accelerate the massive renewal

low-carbon urban transport. The goal is to have 2/3 of the fleet composed of electric buses and 1/3 of biogas-powered ones by 2025. “This is an important step for R AT P, ” s a i d Catherine Guillouard, president and CEO of RATP, “the massive equipment of the fleet by electric buses is emblematic of its ambition to become a key player in the energy transition in the public transport sector. To welcome them, the company is mobilized to face an industrial challenge in very short deadlines with the adaptation of its 25 bus centers, of which 12 are already in transformation”. The RATP fleet currently consists of 4,700 buses and already includes 950 hybrid buses, 140 biomethane-powered buses and 83 electric buses. In 2019, the RATP fleet in Île-de-France will be increased with another 77 electric buses and 50 biomethane-powered buses.

expo congress organised every two years by the international association of public transport (UITP). With almost 130 years of history behind it, this is an unmissable event for all those who are involved with the world of collective mobility. The theme of the 63rd edition will be ‘The art of public transport’. This theme is more than ever appropriate for this year’s location. With about 780,000 passengers using the public transport network every day and 49% of all journeys within the county made by public transport, Stockholm represents the city of public transport par excellence. The UITP summit is composed of numerous congress sessions and of the usual exhibition area. Among the topics that will be dealt with in the congress, there is the increase in bus service efficiency, safety on transport networks, the implementation and management of elec-

nology in public transport. The three-day summit will be full of various initiatives and side events, such as the ‘Y4PT Transport Hackathon’, a workshop reserved for young people and focused on transport-related challenges through the use of technology in an inventive way. There will also be a dedicated space for start-up companies and non-traditional players in the ‘studio’: 32 exhibition spots where new ideas can be showcased. It is noteworthy to underline also the opportunity to test drive electric buses and autonomous vehicles in a dedicated outdoor area and the techincal visits of public transport sites to discover first-hand best practices and real life implementations (about fifteen the scheduled technical visits). The Global Public Transport Summit will be held on 9-12 June at the Stockholm Exhibition Center. Other articles about International events: https://bustocoach.com/en/event-ads/

for a completely new generation of minibus with the three-pointed star. Developed from scratch, it is based on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis but only up to the B-pillar after which there is a self-supporting integral skeleton. It is 8.5 meters long and 2.02 meters wide with a wheelbase of 5.095 mm. These measures make it agile through narrow alleys in historic city centers or in populated suburbs. The basis of the high gross vehicle weight (6.8 tons) is a high-load rear axle with air suspension developed exclusively for the Mercedes Benz minibuses. The 17.5-inch wheels featuring 215/75 R 17.5 tires represent the prerequisite for the enormous loadbearing capacity. The Sprinter City 75 offers a very spacious low-floor area thanks to the increased wheelbase and a highly variable design. It offers room for five folding seats on the driver’s side and two more on the door side. Alternatively there is space for a wheelchair and/or a stroller. If the folding seats are not in use, there is standing room for up to 26 passengers. It is also possible to fit a quick-change seating

system with up to three double seats on the driver’s side. The range of assistance systems is outstanding, like for example the ESP electronic stability program or the Crosswind Assist. To support the driver there are also optional systems such as Active Brake Assist or Active Distance Assist Distronic. The standard equipment includes a Telma retarder with braking power output of 350 Nm. Also new is the layout of the controls on the dashboard and the MBUX multimedia system with a 7 or 10.25-inch touch screen. The renewed Sprinter range includes, as before, the Sprinter City, Transfer, Mobility and Travel models. The Sprinter Transfer 23 and 35, the Sprinter Mobility 23 and the Sprinter City 75 were the first models launched in 2018. The rest will follow in 2019, as will all versions of the Sprinter Travel. Once the

transition is completed, the product range will include more than 20 models with left and right-hand drive in autumn 2019. Other articles about Mercedes: https://bustocoach.com/en/costruttore/evobus-mercedes/

ot only keeping up with the times but N actually anticipating them. This is what Iveco has been doing for the last 40 years with

its Daily in order to continue to be at the top of the list of commercial vehicles in terms of performance, sustainability, low fuel consumption and operating costs. Once again we can talk today of ‘New Daily’, where the ‘new’ consists of the integration of a complete set of driver assistance systems, the optimization of safety systems and the development of connectivity in order to offer increasingly complete vehicle assistance and service management. Seen from outside, the new Daily stands out only for some changes on the front. The bumper is now divided into 3 sections in order to easy the replacement operations in the event of damage. The ventilation grille (tougher) has been extended to increase the ventilation capacity of the engine and radiator and includes coloured inserts in black (standard), silver (for models fitted with Hi-Matic gearbox) or light blue (for electric and gas-powered Blue Power models). The external lighting technology has also been changed with LED lights that, in addition to never need to be replaced, increase visibility in both short and wide range (+ 10% and + 12%). Inside, the driving position features a steering wheel of reduced dimensions and asymmetrically shaped (more ergonomic), axially (45 mm) and angularly (4 degrees) adjustable and complete with controls that integrate up to 20

DAILY TAKES A LEAP FORWARD The new Iveco Daily range is characterized by driver assistance systems, safety, connectivity, performance and services

functions. In addition to this, it also features the new electric power steering complete with City function for maximum comfort at any speed.

It reduces driving effort by 70%, it electronically compensates for drift and wheel unbalances and by eliminating the hydraulic steering system it helps to reduce fuel con-

sumption. At the center of the dashboard there is a TFT high-resolution colour display that provides a user-friendly and intuitive interface, complete with the all vehicle’s key settings and functionalities. It features a 7-page dedicated menu and over 100 information, from tire pressure monitoring to consumption data, from driver assistance systems (see box on the following page) to trip data. The classic hand brake lever has been replaced by an electric parking brake (EPB) that can be activated via a square button (P) inserted in the lower part of the dashboard (on the right), near the short gear lever. In combination with the Queue Assist system and the Hi-Matic gearbox, it automatically engages when the vehicle is parked and disengages when the driver is ready to drive away. In the totem at the center of the dashboard there is the display of the Hi-Connect infotelematic system (see box) for infotainment, navigator and the rear view camera. Immediately underneath the climate management panel and above, there are the controls for the èè

It also includes a DAB radio and enables the driver to mirror his mobile device with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to use its apps safely while driving. City function of the electric power steering and for the Traction Plus and Hill Descent Control assistance systems. Not immediately visible but important for the efficiency of the new Daily, is the twinleaf rear suspension system for single wheels (commercial models) which increases the damping force in extension at full load condition by 30%.

The innovations dedicated to the performance and fuel economy of the traction system concern, indeed, all models. 2.3-liter F-1A engines (also mounted on school buses and on Daily Lines with power output of 156 hp) now use a new electronic-controlled variable geometry turbine (eVGT) that in addition to ensuring faster response in transient conditions, also offers greater efficiency and the-

result of the parAS tnership between Iveco and Microsoft, the

new connectivity allows the new Daily to offer services to improve efficiency and ease predictive maintenance. The vehicle’s real-time operating data are provided to the Iveco Control Room in order to be able to face any problems in advance, take preventive measures and plan maintenance operations as efficiently as possible. With this remote assistance service, the risk of machine downtime (and time) is reduced. In order to optimize the efficiency of the new Daily is

also available the MyDaily portal, accessible from computers or mobile devices, to keep under control the performance, fuel consumption and the driver’s driving style. It also includes any suggestions for the

driver. Finally, for fleet management, it is available the complete package offered by Verizon Connect for navigation, advanced diagnostics, driving times and much more.

which in addition to reducing the driver’s stress levels are aimed at preventing dangerous situations. The Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) intervenes to prevent collisions at speeds below 80 km/h and mitigates the impact at higher speeds. It also features the City Brake PRO system to prevent accidents at low speeds (starting from 5 km/h). Basically, if the driver does not intervene directly, the combination of the two systems avoids the collision with static obstacles when traveling from 5 to 20 km/h and up to 80 km/h (except for the 7.2ton Daily) or the collision with moving vehicles that proceed at low speed (10 km/h) when traveling from 5 to 80 km/h. In both cases, if you travel at higher speeds, a reduction in travel speed is automatically activated. There are three stages of behaviour of AEBS & City Brake PRO: detection of the danger, visual and acoustic warning to

the driver, autonomous braking. In addition to the Adaptive Cruise Control, which adjusts the set speed to keep safety distance from the vehicle ahead, there is now also the Queue Assist system that intervenes in

urban traffic situations by following the vehicle ahead in slow-moving queues. Acting in combination with the Hi-Matic automatic transmission, the system automatically operates accelerator and brakes, up to complete stop. To ensure driving stability, the new Daily uses two systems. The ProActive Lane Keeping Assist (offered as

refore fuel savings. The same eVGT is also mounted on the 3-liter F1C, which is now also available for all minibus models with 210 hp power output. 180 hp models continue to mount the variable geometry turbine with pneumatic control. Fuel economy is achieved also through the Start & Stop system, which is available as

an optional in combination with the Lane Departure Warning) which acts on the steering to help the driver in keeping the lane and the Crosswind Assist which intervenes in the presence of strong side wind. Through the ESP sensors, it applies the necessary brakes to the wheels on the side facing the wind. Other driver assistance systems are the Hill Descent Control system that enables the driver to descent the steepest slopes slowly and safely, and the Traction Plus system that increases the grip of the wheels on slippery surfaces for speeds up to 30 km/h. It automatically detects and brakes the wheel that is losing grip, transferring the torque to the wheel with major grip. Both systems can be activated by the controls aligned in the upper part of the central dashboard.

standard on all models running the F1A engine. Minibuses that mount EPB can feature optionally a storage box next to the driver’s seat with tray and space for two half-liter bottles. The automatic opening of the electric passenger door is always in combination with the EPB. Other articles about Iveco: https://bustocoach.com/en/costruttore/iveco-bus-fr/

he Tourismo M/2 Safety Coach features a special driveline. Everything is branded Mercedes: from the engine to the gearbox, to the rear axle. In particular, the transmission is the excellent automated GO 250-8 Power Shift (optional; as standard it is coupled to the 6-speed manual version) and the engine is the most powerful (456 hp/335 kW) 10-liter Om 470 (as standard it features the 360 hp version). This new calibration was introduced in 2016 with the launch of the new generation of OM 470, characterized by the X-Pulse injection system with pressure amplifier (up to 2,700 bar). In addition to other changes to the engine, it helps to reduce fuel consumption and gas exhaust emissions. Emissions are reduced thanks to the integration of the SCR system (with AdBlue injection) with gas recirculation (EGR), the oxida- ulate filter must be replaced for tion catalyst, the particulate filter the first time after 360,000 km and the SCR catalyst.
