The fully integracategory. This award, organised by the European Commission ted system replaces the conventional power steering pumps used

since 1987, rewards companies that successfully combine the economic viability of business with environmental protection. The award allows Irizar to participate as Spain´s representative in the European finalists phase. Irizar´s aim for sustainable development and commitment to the environment goes back to 1998, when the company became the first coach manufacturer to obtain the ISO14001 certification. In 2011 Irizar started the electromobility business which is forming a large part of the Group´s future strategy with 100% electric buses, articulated or bi-articulated, and other public electric vehicles, but also the main necessary infrastructure for charging, traction and the storage of energy.

S

SUCCESS OF THE ELECTRIC BUSES

olaris Bus & Coach got orders for 42 electric buses in the domestic market. During the Transexpo International fair of Local Public transport (Kielce, October 11-13), the Polish manufacturer signed an agreement for the delivery of 20 electric buses to Cracow City Transport (MPK). The order includes 17 zero-emission new Urbinos 12 and 3 articulated models of the new generation. The buses will be charged by a pantograph mounted on the roof and in the bus depot using a plugin. Cracow is the first Polish city to have a bus line operated only with electric buses. Currently there are five Solaris battery-powered buses operating the zero-emission route. Another contract was signed in September between Solaris Bus & Coach and Jaworzno City Transport (PKM Jaworzno) for 22 battery-powered Urbinos ranging from 8.9 to 18 metres. Solaris presented its first fully electric buses in 2011. Since then over 100 battery powered vehicles have been sold in Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Poland.

SCANIA/CASTROSUA BUSES FOR SPAIN

he urban transport company based in Gijón, Spain, EMTUSA T has renewed its confidence in Scania technology and presented to the community seven new city buses. They are full low floor

vehicles built on Scania N 320 UB4X2 chassis with New City bodywork by the Iberian manufacturer Castrosua. Powered by a 320-hp engine with SCR system for the treatment of exhaust gases, these seven city buses are equipped with kneeling, two wheelchair areas and Masats telescopic ramp. The new vehicles joined a fleet of 84 units, of which more than half with Scania technology.

nowadays in all buses with a gross weight of over 7.5 t. Thanks to the demand-based actuation of the electric power steering pump, which had previously been powered by the combustion engine, steering assist can in future be used regardless of the engine speed. The unit consists of a three-phase current synchronous motor, control unit, high-performance electrical system and hydraulic pump in a single housing. Daimler Buses plans to offer the electrohydraulic power steering (EHPS) for Mercedes-Benz Citaro city buses as optional equipment from mid 2017. The system was developed in collaboration with the Engineering Center Steyr GmbH & Co. KG based in St. Valentin, Austria.

100 NEOPLAN VEHICLE’S WARNING COACHES SOUNDS FOR ITALY Cotral Spa has signed a framework agreement with Man Truck & Bus Italy for the supply of hundred Neoplan Skyliner double-deckers in the next four years

A Scania research project involving the drivers. Objective: to detect the most effective warning signals for safe driving

tial bus fleet renewal. So, after the first consignment of the 12-metre Solaris InterUrbino buses delivered in September (and part of an order of 300 vehicles), Cotral Spa has signed a framework agreement with M A N Tr u c k & Bus Italy in October for the supply of hundred long-distance buses in the next four years. It is referred to a double-deck of Neoplan Skyliner range. The agreement follows the award of the tender last August. At the same time, the first supply contract has been signed for the initial 40 units to be delivered by the end of the year. The vehicles are in class II and can carry up to 90 seated passengers. Neoplan Skyliner provides the protected driver cabin and the

while recently performing the relevant observations in the framework of the above-mentioned research project, Scania has entered into a partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, a world-leading research centre. The research project recorded the brain activity of 16 drivers in a stretch of road in the simulator for 25 minutes and twelve different alert and other irrelevant sounds were played in the meantime. The drivers pressed a button to confirm when they had heard each warning sound. An electroencephalography (EEG) cap has recorded the brain activity using 64 electrodes attached to their scalp.

fter ten years, Cotral Spa, the public A transport company of the Lazio Region (Italy), is getting to the heart of a substan-

video surveillance system. There is the in-line six-cylinder MAN D26 common rail turbodiesel (Euro 6) with a power exceeding 500 hp. It is combined with the 12-speed MAN TipMatic automated transmission. The contract signed by MAN Truck & Bus Italy is currently the most important in Italy for this kind of buses. “Another important element,” said Franco Pedrotti of MAN Truck & Bus Italy, “regards the service: there is a ten-year global service contract for all the vehicles that will take advantage of the MAN after-sales facilities in Rome to always ensure the full availability of the vehicles.”

ne warning signal rather than another can O make a difference in terms of safety. The transport professionals know it, that’s why,

“A warning sound prepares the driver for taking or avoiding an action,” explains Christiane Glatz, researcher in cognitive neuroscience at the Max Planck Institute. “A good warning sound should be understood immediately and without ambiguity. There should be no need for deep contemplation. For example, we immediately recognize an ambulance siren.” The research aims to measure brain activity while eliminating cultural factors that influence our perception of warning sounds and the workload involved in comprehending them. The huge amount of data has been generated by the tests. “This will give us a solid basis for establishing good simulation methods that increase our capacity to perform virtual tests,” said Stas Krupenia, Senior Cognitive Engineer.

IT CHANGES THE SKIN BUT KEEPS THE DNA Neoplan Tourliner renovated from top to bottom, from the aesthetic line to the specifications of interior passenger compartment and cockpit, from the efficiency of the driveline to the availability of new safety systems starts from the 12-metre version the IT renewal of the Neoplan Tourliner series. By the end of 2017 will follow the

two-axle version from 13 metres. Surprisingly unveiled at the last edition of Hannover IAA, it stands out immediately from the previous version for the aesthetics of the whole front and rear part. At the

front, the new Tourliner features the LED daytime running lights, which are designed as an illuminated ring around the low-beam light. The housing of the fog lights in the bumper has also been changed. In addition to the new design of the rear window and the presence of two horizontal air intakes, the

individual spotlights give way to a unique angular body on the rear head. On the front overhang, the lower connector between the inclined and front A-pillar is now clearer with a diagonal connected to the cutting down of the door glazing, extremely similar to the one we saw a few years ago on the models of the ex Viseon manufacturer.

In the interior there are several possibilities of passenger seats arrangement, up to a maximum of 53 seats thanks to the low floor (raised in comparison to the previous version) without platforms for the seats. There is a lift for wheelchairs, available for use in intercity services and the seats can be moved from their guides in order to create èè

space for two wheelchairs. The harmonious shades of gray and beige are applied to the interior and open lugNEOPLAN TOURLINER

gage racks, in their turn completed by the new equipment sets, which also offer increased comfort levels thanks to indirect ventilation. The LED lights are used both for the spotlights and ceiling. Even the ventilation system has been revised as a whole in order to improve the climate conditions inside the vehicle and twin USB outlets can be installed on almost all of the seats. The ergonomics of the driver’s seat has been optimised. Now there is a lateral operating panel, which features improved trays and rearranged controls. The latest generation of the Multi Media Coach (MMC) infotainment system is available in either the MMC Basic or MMC Ad-

vanced version with a 5 or 7-inch display. Among the features, there is a voice input and the option to connect up to two smartphones at once. As for efficiency, the new Tourliner benefits from aerodynamics increased by 20% (Cx is 0.36), partially achieved by the new mirrors. In addition, the D26 engine now comes with increased performance and torque, featuring an optimised driveline that allows for fuel savings up to 10%. Finally, the new generation of MAN EfficientCruise, meaning also the MAN EfficientRoll free-wheel feature is available for coaches for the very

first time. The latter provides a gain in efficiency even on slight downward gradients by automatically shifting the gearbox to the neutral ‘N’ position and minimizing the engine friction loss. In terms of safety, the new Neoplan Tourliner now features the fatigue protection system MAN AttentionGuard that recognises when a driver’s focus is decreasing and issues a warning if necessary, using for this purpose the data of the LGS assistance system (Lane Guard Assist). The MAN AttentionGuard delivers a visual, acoustic and haptic warning if it detects a drop in attention, but it does not actively intervene. There is also the emergency brake assistant EBA, the adaptive cruise control ACC and the tyre pressure monitor TPM. The strength of the superstructure complies with the ECE R66 02 regulation.

SPRINTER CITY 65 RELAUNCHES

The 7.7-metre city minibus branded Mercedes-Benz following the future regulations, is fitted with retarder of last generation and connectivity devices

ell known that losing weight brings its W own advantages. Sprinter City 65, a minibus from the Sprinter City range devel-

oped by Mercedes-Benz for the city transport, confirms it either. Showcased at the Hannover IAA last September, this model is now fitted with the new weight-optimised Telma AF 30-35 retarder which, despite offering the same functionality and MERCEDES SPRINTER CITY 65

braking performance (350 Nm), now weighs 15 percent less. Equally new is its combined buggy and wheelchair space, which will be a compulsory component for urban regular-service buses from July 1, 2017. The vehicle exhibited in Hannover also featured impressive connectivity equipment with a range of devices such as computer-supported operational control system (RBL) with generously dimensioned central monitor for displaying route information, destination and passenger management, a WLAN Media Router and USB connections on all seats. In addition, there is video surveillance system of the passenger compartment and at the entrances. The Sprinter City 65 is a well-known model on the market and together with the smallsized City 35 measuring 6,945 mm is the long-lived of the range with a production running more than two decades (launched in 1995). The City 77 measuring 8,716 mm was added in 2010 and the City 45 RL (7,361 mm) in 2015 flanked by the City 65 K, a compact variant measuring 7,016 mm. The Sprinter City 65 is the medium-sized bus of the family measuring 7,716 mm in length. It is based on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis with a 4,325 mm wheelbase.

The lowered frame between the axles is facilitating the use in regular-service operations and the lowered section covers a surface of approximately 3.5 m². The total weight of 5,650 kg provides the necessary weight reserves for carrying up to 30 passengers. The vehicle is provided with two entrances: the front one with a double-wing sliding door and the rear one with a single door. The passenger compartment is equipped with 13 fixed seats plus 4 folding seats; three of those are installed in the wheelchair area in front of the

door 1 which is fitted with a manual ramp. The “City Star Eco” saddlery is manufactured in-house. The seats are light in weight, yet also extremely hard-wearing and with padded seat/backrest. The comfortable spacing of 840 mm to 880 mm between the seats contributes to the pleasantly airy feeling alongside with the height of 2,260 mm in the low-floor area. The Gaya Wood dark brown floor covering conveys a general sense of comfort; while the plastic trim panels on the side walls are very easy to keep clean.

SPRINTER MINIBUS RANGE

he completion of the T base vehicle of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter series, offered suggestions for improvement also in the minibus range. This results in lower power ratings that are significantly more dynamic now. The entry-level engine now has an output of 84 kW (114 hp) and attains a torque figure of 300 Nm, increasing these values by 20%. Even the next power level with its 105 kW (143 hp) and 330 Nm, is more powerful in both parametres by ap-

proximately 10%. Mercedes-Benz has extended the Sprinter product

range with an option featuring permissible gross vehicle weight of 5.5 t. The weight-optimised M1 minibuses from the Sprin-

In fact, the traction management via As-Tronic gearbox and a final-drive ratio of 3.70 was not affected by these changes on our test route and the performance was more than good. The Magelys 12.8 has not obtained the records of the 12-metre Setra Euro VI buses tested so far (refer to the table at the end of the article) but the difference is not significant, especially considering the reduced loading during the testdrive of the German vehicles. At the end of the drive test, the Magelys recorded an average fuel consumption (including the equivalent share of AdBlue) equal to one litre per 4.60 km of route, (the Magelys Pro Euro V result was equal to 4.01 km/litre) traveling at the average of 80.6 km/h. It is worth noticing that the percentage of AdBlue consumption is more than 6% of the consumed fuel. It is a value halved by other engine brands combining SCR with the partial recirculation of cooled exhaust gas (EGR). This principle is not applied to the Cursor engines that are fitted with HI-SCR technology of Iveco that does not require EGR to stay in Euro VI polluting emissions limits. Compared to Magelys Euro V, the most obvious changes affected the design of the two heads with more accentuated lines and small changes on the front and the mirrors profile to increase the aerodynamics. The headlamps are now fitted with Xenon headlights, the daytime running lights with LED as well as the position side lights and turn indicators. The front fog lights are fitted with Corner Line function to increase the visibility. The rear LED headlamps are also new and made in a crescent shape. Other changes affected the positioning of the

heat exchangers (intercoolers), now moved to the right side of the engine compartment. The air conditioning capacitors that previously were positioned to the left are now moved to the right side. Finally, Magelys Euro 6 now features a new rear axle, always branded Meritor that is lighter and lubricated with 15 litres of synthetic oil (previously 18L of mineral oil) with oil change interval extended to 240 thousand kilometres. The test vehicle was also provided with a third door at the level of the internal floor, behind the first axle, with the underlying arrangement for mounting the wheelchair lift.

ith the transition to Euro VI, Magelys replaced the previous Cursor 10 engine with Cursor 9 delivering 400 horsepower (294 kW) fitted with the HI-SCR technology. It is referred to an exclusive Iveco that does not have any exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and offers benefits from the point of view of efficiency, diesel consumption and duration of the particulate filter (DPF). The after-treatment of the exhaust gas system consists of an oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a passive particulate filter (DPF). Downstream of the DPF are, in sequence, the urea metering device, the high turbulence mixing pipe and the SCR catalyst. A final catalyst (CUC, Clean-up Catalyst) eliminates any residual ammonia content in the exhaust gases. Everything is enclosed in a single body
