uernsey island, English Channel. An additional order G for 22 Wrightbus StreetVibe buses equipped with Allison T 2100 fully automatic transmission was placed by

the local operators after a previous order of 12 buses with Allison transmission (the buses were delivered in 2017). “The roads on Guernsey are narrow and winding with a terrain that varies wildly,” explained Karl Guille, director of traffic and highway services for the States of Guernsey. “You can be in typical rush hour town traffic, with stop-start driving one minute, and need to accelerate smoothly up a steep hill the next.” The 9.04 metre-long, 2.28 metre-wide Wrightbus StreetVibe was selected as the narrowest bus in its class, with a seating capacity of 31 plus 11 standing. To be compliant with the island’s speed limit, the buses needed to be fitted with a limiter. The Allison T 2100 transmission is mated to a Cummins ISB4.5 Euro 6 engine.

BYD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ISRAEL

he transport company STIB-MIVB based in BruxelT les has signed a five-year framework agreement with Iveco Bus for the supply of 141 hybrid-drive buses.

They are the Urbanway hybrid electric vehicles in the 18-meter version with a capacity of up to 103 passengers, a determining factor for the Belgian operator. These buses combine an electric drive with a 286-hp Tector 7 Euro VI engine (compatible with the second generation of HVO biofuels). They feature the braking energy recovery system and the “Arrive & Go” function for 100% electric mode with zero emissions. The delivery of the 141 Urbanway hybrid buses is expected from May 2019.

part of a larger project, fully supported by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Environment in Israel, and serves as a spearhead for experimenting and introducing technology for alternative transportation in the public transportation market in Israel. The chinese manufacturer already supplied 17 buses to Haifa, a port city in the north of Israel. The performance of those vehicles, in operation since mid-2017, led Egged to place the additional order for ebuses in Jerusalem. Delivery is expected in the first quarter of 2019.

THE NEW MOBILITY AT CITYTECH

INFORMATION IS ON THE NET www.bustocoach.com/en The “Vehicles” section in the website provides data sheets for all types of buses available on the market, inclusive of photographs, as well as historical profiles and manufacturer’s details. Equally comprehensive information can be found in the “Components” section.

Innovative solutions for 3rd millennium cities mobility and urban planning are back to the core of CityTech 2018, hosted in Milan on September 13-14 he ‘new mobility’ market is in turmoil. T The offer is increasingly expanding with products, technologies and services for a

clean, shared, autonomous and digitalized transport. Cities, as well as citizens, are ready to take up their challenges. We must work however on regulations and infrastructure integration without forgetting to take into account ‘costs’ in order to make these technologies ever more affordable. This, and more, was discussed (and displayed) at CityTech 2018, the b2b event by Clickutility on Earth, now in its sixth edition which was hosted in Milan on September 13-14. The conference & exhibition was promoted by the City of Milan, and it has seen the participation of various sponsors and partners, including the Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) which has distinguished itself in recent years for its commitment to sustainable mobility and innovative services to users, such as the payment of subway tickets with contactless bank cards. In the outdoor area of CityTec, ATM

displayed the Solaris Urbino electric bus, one of the 25 already circulating on the ATM lines. The Milan-based company is focused particularly on the electric mobility. ATM is planning to deploy 200 buses by 2021 with the ambitious goal of having a fully-electric fleet with 1,200 vehicles and four new depots plus three restyled ones in 2030. Among the other vehicles on display, in addition to cars, bicycles and electric scooters, the EasyMile EZ10 driverless shuttle was exhibited (and tested). It is an electric-powered microbus manufactured in France with Ligier bodywork and it features Navya equipment with sensors for the autonomous driving. The vehicle was displayed by Navya in partnership with Bosch, a company that also deals with mobility systems and was one of CityTech partners. Navya managers inform that EasyMile driverless shuttles have already been deployed in around eighty countries across North America, Europe and Asia. Over two hundred projects are currently in progress. More articles about the International Events: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/2440/articoli_nref_eventi

he bus market is positive in the EU borT ders for the first eight months of the year. It is the European association of automobile

manufacturers (ACEA) to confirm it but the progress is limited (+ 1.3%). According to the data provided, buses over 3.5 tonnes registered from January to August 2018 amounted to 27,527 units compared to 27,175 in 2017 for the same period. Demand has definitely grown in Italy where the registered vehicles become 3,061 compared to the 2,264 registered in January-August 2017 (+ 35.2%). The French market is also on the rise with 4,070 units compared to 4,452 (+ 9.4%). Germany fell (even slightly) with 4,202 units out of 4,358 (-3.6%) and so Spain that re-

verses the trend with 1,966 vehicles on 2,022 (-2.8%). The decline is more pronounced in the United Kingdom, which sees its registrations decrease by 13% (from 5,610 to 4,879 vehicles). The result of the neighboring Ireland was instead of the opposite sign (+ 39.4%). The North European segment was a little negative, with the exception of Belgium (+ 9.3%) and Luxembourg (+ 10.1%). In beaten Sweden (-40%). In Eastern Europe, the Czech Republic is noticeable with a result of 70.6%. The recovery of Greece (+38.8% ) should be noted. BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM BY DAIMLER

ercedes-Benz and Setra M buses of Daimler Buses are increasingly focused on safety

thanks to state-of-the-art systems such as Active Brake Assist 4 (ABA 4), Preventive Brake Assist and Sideguard Assist. The first one was previewed in 2017 with the launch of the new Setra 231 DT and represents the last evolutionary step of Active Brake Assist, the emergency braking assistance system introduced ten years ago. If at that time emergency braking was activated in response to moving vehicles, and subsequently with ABA 3 also in response to stationary obstacles, now the braking manoeuvre is performed automatically even in the presence of pedestrians. In the event of collision with moving pedestrians, the system warns the driver and initiates partial braking at the same time. Thus the driver can avoid impact by performing a full-stop braking or just a steering manoeuvre. Active Brake Assist 4 is based on new-generation radar technology that also features in Mercedes-Benz cars and trucks. The long-range radar registers vehicles and stationary obstacles at a maximum distance of up to 250 m in a direct line in front of the touring coach. Motorcycles and bicycles or mopeds are identified at up to 160 m while pedestrians at up to 80 m. The short-range radar has a maximum range of 70 m. ABA 4 will be installed as standard equipment on all touring coaches from Mercedes-Benz and Setra: from the Mercedes Tourismo RHD to the Setra Comfort Class 500 and TopClass 500. Preventive Brake Assist is the active emergency braking assist system for city buses. The warning cascade and the braking intervention are designed for operations in city traffic. For this reason, Preventive Brake Assist intentionally does not perform automatic emergency stops. This reduces the risk of injury for passengers on board, in particular for standing passengers. The driver still has the option of an emergency stop at any time. Preventive Brake Assist is available as an option for the entire model family of the Mercedes-Benz Citaro, including the CapaCity large-capacity bus and the range of the Mercedes-Benz Conecto city buses. Last, but not least, Sideguard Assist: the first turning assistance system for city buses and touring coaches with pedestrian detection. The system operates in several stages: if there is a moving object in the side monitoring zone, the driver is given a visual warning.

On the touring coaches, a LED in the shape of a yellow triangle lights up at the driver’s eye level in the side mirror on the co-driver’s side and in the instrument cluster. On the Citaro, it is integrated into the A0-pillar on the door side. The lamp draws the driver’s attention towards the situation alongside the vehicle. If the sensors detect the risk of a collision, there is an additional visual warning in the form of a red triangular LED, as well as a vibration warning in the driver’s seat. Mercedes offers Sideguard Assist for the city bus Citaro in all versions including the high-deck touring coach Tourismo. Setra offers it for its touring coaches of the Comfort Class 500 and TopClass 500 including the Setra S 531 DT double-decker bus.

sector. This is how Barbi Coach & Bus Srl was born. Headquartred in Modena, the new company is currently dedicated to the production of minibuses with the collaboration of local artisans specialized in the bus and special vehicles sectors. «Barbi Coach & Bus is a new Italian company specialised in the manufacturing of minibuses and is completely independent from Carrozzeria Barbi», explains Isabella Barbi, great-granddaughter of the founder of the Modenese body shop. «At the moment it is totally focused on the manufacturing of minibuses but, as it is inherent in the name of the new company, the idea is to produce also coaches in the future. Our wish is to go back to the origins as my great-grandfather, Galileo Barbi, had done in the last century».

Barbi is therefore back with Sole, the minibus for the transport of students built on Iveco Euromidi CC100 chassis and sold through Iveco dealers. It is 9.790 mm long, 2.350 mm wide and 2.995 mm high. The full-metal structure is made of parts which are assembled and welded in a single block. The seating arrangement is 58+2+1 and the middle school bus is equipped with Lazzerini BRIO 410 passenger seats.. «We realized this project focusing on the users», explains Isabella Barbi, «a product that children would enjoy, therefore buses fe-

The product is focused also on driver’s comfort, in fact it features a driver’s door as standard equipment». The company reports that the school buses currently under construction are about ten, some already in service in Lombardy and Veneto. «Considering that the company is just starting”, points out Isabella, “we have received many orders”.

angalore (Bengaluru), the capital of the B municipal corporation of the same name in South India, hosted the 8th edition of

Busworld India at the International Exhibition Center (BIEC). 115 exhibitors, not only national, and over 8,000 visitors took part in the three-day event, that was previously held in Mumbai (Bombay). The event was organized in cooperation with ASRTU (Association of State Road Transport Undertakings) and BOCI (Bus Operators Confederation of India).

BUSES FROM ANOTHER WORLD

New start for Busworld India in Bangalore. On display were the proposals for the Asian market: still mostly Euro 5 and front engine, but electric buses are getting ahead

Before reviewing the product innovations displayed at the event, it is useful to contextualize it. India is a state of about 1.4 billion people, which in the last 20 years has seen a rapid process of urbanization that has led to a population increase in urban and suburban areas from 286 million in 2001 to 377 million in 2011, and is expected to reach 600 million people by 2031. At the same time, the use of motor vehicles has increased exponentially, which in total

have increased from 21 million in 1991 to 91.5 million in 2011 and to 186.5 million in 2015. Of the latter, 150 million are two-wheelers (scooters and motorbikes), 26 million are cars and only 1.5 million are buses. Furthermore, about 17 million new two-wheelers and 3 million new cars are registered every year. This causes serious mobility problems in terms of traffic congestion, polluting emissions and safety. Just consider that for a trip from Bangalore

TATA - Maxi Cab

to the airport (30 km) by taxi you have to take into account two hours of travel within a confusion of trucks, coaches, motorcycles and cars that every few kilometers are blocked up in traffic. All this is surrounded by a concert of horns and a race for those who can earn an extra centimeter. Remedial actions are actually being taken, for instance, the modernization of the infrastructure and the circulating fleet thanks to incentives for the use of natural gas-powered vehicles and electric vehicles in èè

public transport and limitations on the circulation of the most outdated vehicles. For example, in New Delhi, trucks registered more than 20 years ago will no longer be able to circulate in 2020. In Bangalore, the subway is being expanded by extending the current two North-South and East-West Corridors (18+24 km) and creating two new lines for a further 72 km. As far as public transport is concerned, the government has launched the FAME program to speed up the use of electric buses in eight of the major cities. In addition to this, electric buses have already been put into circulation in two other more cities. The most appropriate solutions for the implementation of electric mobility are therefore being studied. Simultaneously, in 2015 the “Accessible India Campaign” was launched to encourage the use of public and private transport by disabled people. During Busworld India, a conference on public transport sustainability, organized by ASRTU (Association of State Road Transport Undertakings), was held on these topics (plus digital innovation). The representative of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has announced the ambitious goal of replacing in three gradual stages all diesel-powered buses with electric vehicles: 30% by 2021, 50% by 2023 and 100% by 2025. 44,598 buses are currently circulating in Bangalore. We’ll see if they manage to do it. In the same context, the contents of the FAME government program were taken up again. It must be reminded that in 2017, as part of the Clean Air Program, an agreement was signed between BYD, Scania, Cummins and Volvo for the reduction of polluting emissions in 20 major cities in India. The representatives of the associations for the rights of disabled people, on the other hand, have underlined the strong delays in the implementation of the Accessible India Campaign, as far as the introduction of low-floor buses and infrastructure upgrade is concerned. Returning to Busworld India 2018, the manufacturers did not exhibit

In general the minibuses, sleeper-buses and touring coaches on display were mostly powered by front engine (Euro 4). In fact, the participating manufacturers could be counted on one hand or so. The Gilder Z model is instead a ‘sleeper coach’ version with 30 berths arranged on two floors on both sides, accessible also from the rear door (with difficulty). Also the Dreamz is a ‘sleeper coach’. It is built on a three-axle Mercedes SHD 2441 chassis powered by a 408-hp rear engine and coupled to automatic transmission. The berths are 40 and are completely separated from the driver’s seat, which is three-step lowered. Also Prakash Automobiles displayed a ‘sleeper coach’ built on Bharat Benz chassis. It is called Capella, it is 12 meters long and is powered by a front engine. On board there are 30 berths plus the steep steps behind the only front door. It was flanked by the 12-meter Vega touring coach built on Ashok Leyland chassis, equipped with 45 leather seats and featuring all the necessary comfort. As far as electric buses is concerned, they were the result of the partnership between Olectra Greentech (formerly known as Goldstone Infratech) and Chinese BYD. The first one is the 12-meter K9 bus with lowered floor in the first part and capacity for 39 passengers. It is powered by a 180-kW electric motor and is equipped with lithium-iron phosphate batteries with a declared range of 300 km, disc brakes and air suspension. The second vehicle is called K6 and has a length of 6.9 or 7.6 meters. The electric motor is the same but in this case the batteries allow a range of 200 km and can accommodate up to 22 passengers. The model on display was a Luxe version equipped with with 10+1 extra large leather seats, fake briar-root finishing, led lighting and double side door with three access steps. IAA 2018 BusToCoach on-line Magazine - October 2018

At the 67th edition of the IAA in Hannover, buses have taken a back seat to the dominant proposals for freight transport. The innovations presented by the manufacturers were focused on eco-sustainable mobility avilion 12 was dedicated to the brands P of the Traton Group (formerly Volkswagen Truck & Bus), namely MAN, Scania, Volkswagen Caminhões and Ônibus and RIO. MAN Truck & Bus did not disappoint expectations created by the previews in BusToCoach Magazine last month. In addition to showcasing the new Lion’s City equipped with EfficietHybrid module, it has officially unveiled the new fully electric Lion’s City E. It can accommodate 29 passengers and it is powered by a central electric motor on the rear axle with power output from 160 to 270 kW and roof-mounted batteries from 480 to 640 kWh. The range varies from 200 to 270 km and the bus is recharged in depots via CCS connectors. The mass production of MAN LION’S COACH L

he numbers of the previous edition (2016) are officially confirmed by the figures of T the 67th edition of the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover: 2,174 exhibitors coming from about 50 countries and an exhibition area of 280 thousand square meters. Actually, the

number of exhibitors reported in the official catalog given to journalists amount to about 1,400 (as in the previous edition). As far as size is concerned, instead, there is no doubt: the 14 occupied pavilions (plus external areas) were the evidence. As always, a large number of visitors crowded the stands, especially those of the big brands where the coexistence of trucks and buses were displayed in large exhibition areas (for example entire pavilions for the Daimler and Volkswagen group) making it difficult to find your bearings. That IAA is focused on freight is a matter-of-fact. This is confirmed by the ongoing decrease in representation by bus transport companies. Beyond the big brands (Daimler, Iveco, MAN, Scania and Volvo) that exhibited in the truck areas, just over a hundred exhibitors specialized in passenger transport were displaying in pavilion 11 (compared to almost 200 in 2016). Among these, only 20 were bus manufacturers or dealers, that is less than the previous edition. Among the illustrious absentees, Solaris and VDL Bus & Coach preferred to exhibit at the Innotrans that was held in the same days in Berlin. Only two Chinese manufacturers (BYD and CRRC) were exhibiting, while the Turkish group was fully present (Otokar, Temsa, Isuzu, Guleryuz, Karsan and BMC). In addition to these, there were also Van Hool, some manufacturers from Eastern Europe (SOR and Volgabus) and a few manufacturers specialising in minibuses.

It has a displacement of 9.5 liters and two power outputs: 280 and 320 hp and meets Euro 6d standards. For intercity services on display was also the Lion’s Coach L in the version with lift and two wheelchair spaces. It is powered by a 470 hp MAN D2676 engine that will be available from July 2019. Neoplan displayed the double-decker Skyliner with front stairs moved on the right side (optional) to improve passenger flow (it can
