SPIN-OF FOR THE CNH ‘ON -HIGHWAY’ ACTIVITIES According to CNH Industrial’s 2020-2024 business plan, commercial vehicle and FPT powertrain brands will hive off into an independent company uture changes in the market strategies F and corporate structures of the CNH Industrial Group have been announced.

The new five-year 2020-2024 strategic business plan, announced on September 3 at the ‘Capital Markets Day’ event of the Group in New York, provides for the separation of ‘On-Highway’ (commercial vehicles and engines) and “Off-Highway” assets (agriculture, construction and special vehicles). These activities will hive off into two independent groups. Iveco, Iveco Bus and Heuliez Bus commercial vehicle brands, together with the FPT Industrial powertrain business, will thus lead to one newly listed company that will have a legal structure based on that of CNH Industrial N.V. The spin-off is expected to be completed in early 2021, subject to approval at the Extraordinary Meeting of shareholders, currently scheduled for the second semester of 2020. «This courageous plan will lead to the creation of two new global leaders in their re-

spective sectors», said Suzanne Heywood, president of CNH Industrial. «The Board of Directors strongly supports this ambitious strategy and its confidence is underpinned by the rigorous work that led to its formulation». During the presentation of the business plan, called “Transform 2 Win”, CNH announced a $250 million stake in the US company Nikola Corporation based in Phoenix, Arizona. The goal is to “accelerate the transition of the industry towards zero emissions for heavy-duty commercial vehicles in North America and Europe, ” pointed out CNH. Nikola’s heavy-duty trucks, powered by proprietary hydrogen fuel cell and battery technology, will be the first to go into production. Iveco and FPT Industrial will assist in engineering and manufacturing expertise to industrialize Nikola’s fuel cell and battery vehicles. KEOLIS LAUNCHES A NEW E-BRT LINE A new 100% electric line has been launched in France. Ten Irizar BRT electric buses will link the twelve kilometres between Bayonne and Biarritz in 30 minutes he French group Keolis focuses on zeT ro-emission mobility and launches a new 100% electric line. After the opening in May of three out of four BRT electric lines in Amiens with 43 Irizar electric buses, now it is the turn of the route between Bayonne and Biarritz, in the south of France. From September 2, the two cities are connected in 30 minutes by a 12 km long line featuring 30 stops served by 10 electric-powered BRT buses, which are also produced by Irizar. They are 18 meters long, have a capacity of 150 seats fitted with USB sockets under each seat, and they are accessible also to passengers with reduced mobility. The vehicles can be charged quickly in 5 minutes (on average) at the terminal or in 3-4 hours at the depot. The stops are equipped with real-time passenger information and ticket vending machines. The new BRT line is operated by Keolis on behalf of the public transport authority SM-

PBA (Syndicat des Mobilités Pays Basque Adour) and will be followed in 2020 by the launch of a second, always electric, line and the introduction of another 8 Irizar buses. “In addition to Bayonne-Biarritz and Amiens electric lines”, informs Keolis, “we are currently working with the conurbation authority to prepare the launch of the 100% hydrogen BRT line in Pau, France, which is scheduled for the end of year”. Keolis is also in charge of numerous electric mobility projects. In addition to its electric fleets in Sweden and the Netherlands, in June 2019 the Group was awarded the carbon-free bus network in Bergen, Norway. In Canada, in December 2018 Keolis became the largest operator of 100% electric C-type school buses in North America.

THE MAN LION’S CITY WINS AGAIN

The readers of the German magazine VISION mobility crown the renovated MAN city bus with the title ‘Best of Mobility Reader’s Choice 2019’ in the LPT category

he MAN Lion’s City was awarded again, T this time by the readers of the German magazine VISION mobility. The popular

MAN Truck Bus model won the BEST OF Mobility Reader’s Choice 2019 in the ‘local public transport’ category. The prize was awarded by the German magazine in collaboration with the accounting firm Deloitte and the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). The award was presented in September during the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt. What positively impressed the over 1,000 readers who voted for the MAN Lion’s City is that it encompasses in a single vehicle all the specified drive concepts subject to evaluation and voting by the jury. «This award», commented Siegfried Seidel, Marketing Manager at MAN Truck & Bus, «clearly shows that the new MAN Lion’s City bus has been very well received by the market». The MAN Lion’s City has been produced

since 2004 and it is offered not only in the thermal version with the latest generation diesel and natural gas engine (both of which can be coupled to the EfficientHybrid system), but also in the hybrid and electric version. To be precise, the fully electric MAN Lion’s City E will be delivered from the second half of 2020. A distinctive feature is the omission of the engine tower on the rear overhang and the placement of the batteries on the roof. This results in additional seats in the rear section that offer more space for passengers. «The fully electric driveline enables a range of 200 km and, up to 270 km in favourable conditions, over the entire charge of the batteries», states the manufacturer. The MAN Lion’s City has won other awards during its long career such as the prestigious ‘International Bus & Coach of the Year’, won both in 2005 and 2015. HYBRID DOUBLE - DECK MADE IN THE UK It is the Enviro400ER, the new double-decker bus of Alexander Dennis’ electric range. The vehicle is based on the BAE Systems series hybrid technology lexander Dennis introduces a new moA del in its wide range of low or zero emission buses. It is the Enviro400ER Electric Range hybrid double-decker bus. Developed in collaboration with BAE Systems, the Enviro400ER is a series hybrid bus with no mechanical connection between the engine and the drive axle. According to the manufacturer, the vehicle can run for up to three miles (4.83 km) in full electric mode depending on travel time and route profile. Zero emission operations can be scheduled according to the needs of the transport company, for exam-

ple by switching off the engine in tunnels or in other predetermined areas thanks to the stop&start function that can be programmed with a GPS to automatically stop the engine in specific situations. It is powered by a Cummins ISB4.5 diesel engine which delivers 210 hp. For energy storage, the Enviro400ER utilises a 32 kWh system that includes the third-generation lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery technology as well as the same components as the latest generation Enviro400H hybrid bus. The battery can be wireless charged without the need for external charging, thus avoiding expensive infrastructure in depots. Brighton & Hove is the first UK bus operator to order the Enviro400ER. 30 units will become part of the Go-Ahead Group subsidiary’s fleet by the end of the year for use on route 5, running in zero emissions mode in the centre of Brighton.

HYDROGEN PROJECT FOR FLIXBUS

The European operator announces a partnership with Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (FST) to test a fuel cell-powered bus on the road

ydrogen technology convinces the EuH ropean long-distance bus travel operator Flixbus to form a partnership with Freuden-

berg Sealing Technologies (FST), a German company specialized in sealing systems and electric mobility solutions all over the world. After the launch of three electric long-distance buses, Flixbus aims to develop a fuel cell-powered bus. It would be the first long-distance bus of this type for passenger transport services. The partnership will have to be expanded, Flixbus says, to also include a bus manufacturer. “Initial discussions are already underway,” confirms Flixbus in a press release. Names were not yet mentioned, but the interest seems to be focused on BYD and Yutong Chinese manufacturers. «A hybrid system that intelligently combines battery and fuel cells is provided for» states Flixbus. «In addition to long-

distance bus transport, the unit will also be directly applicable to heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks. Initially, a representative bus fleet of 30 vehicles will be equipped with the system during the validation phase». The requirements profile of Flixbus is very clear: performance features such as acceleration, comparable to those of today’s Euro VI standards diesel-powered longdistance buses; a range of at least 500 km without intermediate refuelling and a refuelling time of no more than 20 minutes.

VISION SYSTEMS

ision Systems will launch again its innovative ‘mirrorless’ solution at Busworld Europe 2019. It’s SmartV Vision with high-definition cameras and interior displays that replace the classic rearview mirrors. Compared with the latter, the interior displays eliminate glare and the automatic adjustment of the screens’

brightness ensures excellent visibility in all conditions, night and day, in every weather and in any driving environment. In addition to eliminating side blind spots, the solution offers functions such as the suppression of the blind spot of the A-pillar, parking and manoeuvring aid, driving assistance, or security monitoring around the vehicle. “Smart-Vision”, states the manufacturer, “not only offers greater driving comfort and safety by reducing driver’s fatigue, but also allows a high return on investment, under two years in average. In fact, the system significantly reduces fuel consumption by about 5% thanks to the removal of the mirrors, which lowers wind resistance for better aerodynamics” . It also eliminates the risk of collision between the mirror and road users at bus stops or when cyclists travel along the coach. Pedestrians and cyclists are visible from the front to the rear of the vehicle. This minimises maintenance costs related to potential injuries and damages, while maximising the vehicle’s availability. Consequently, Smart-Vision participates in the reduction of the Total Cost of Ownership. Vision Systems has already launched its innovative solution in serial production for European customers and tests are underway in America, the Middle East and Asia. At Busworld, Irizar and Van Hool will present vehicles equipped with Smart-Vision. Furthermore, Vision Systems will exhibit electronically dimmable windows presenting different possible applications in the bus markets, both for the passenger and for the driver.

INTOURO sport systems, supported by the range of Omniplus training courses for e-mobility operators. In addition to the e-mobility systems, Mercedes-Benz will display at Busworld three other top models: the new Sprinter Travel 75, the versatile Intouro and the Tourismo 15 RHD. The Sprinter Travel 75 is a new model in the Mercedes minibus range. Intended for touring services, it is 8.5 meters long, it has a total weight of 6.5 tons and a passenger capacity of 21+1 seats thanks to the use of a high-load rear axle with pneumatic suspension, developed exclusively for minibuses. It features a wheelbase of 5,100 millimeters and after the central pillar the bodywork consists of a self-supporting body that allows to widen to ten centimeters the interior available space for the seats with a seating arrangement of 2+1. The Sprinter Travel 75 features also a panoramic windscreen, double-sided shaped windows and a rear luggage space of two cubic meters plus 0.3 m on the sides. It is also equipped with convector heating and separate air conditioning system, with ComfortClass S 515 HD

power output of 11 kW for passengers and 7 kW for the driver. It is powered as standard by the 163-hp 2.15-liter engine (120 kW), but on request it can be equipped with the 190-hp 3-liter engine (140 kW). The presence of the Intouro intercity bus at the Mercedes stand is not something new but confirms the validity of this series of vehicles in terms of versatility and operating costs: three two-axle versions with lengths ranging from 12.1 to 13.3 meters, two types of seats, the possibility of mounting a wheelchair lift, two engine power levels (299 and 354 hp) and three gearbox options. For the Tourismo RHD, the Brussels show will be the occasion to celebrate a double milestone: 25 years since its birth and 30 thousand buses sold. Now in its third generation, thanks to a complete range of models (from 12.3 to 14 meters) it is able to cover a range of uses ranging from long-distance services up to medium and long-distance touring services, always with excellent results in terms of fuel consumption. Finally, Daimler Buses will exhibit vehicles branded Setra: the three different lines of models will be represented by the

MultiClass S 415 Low Entry, by the touring ComfortClass S 515 HD and by the TopClass S 516 HDH. The double-decker TopClass S 531 DT will then be added. It should be underlined that in terms of safety, in addition to the complete devices already present as standard, the interior materials are currently being tested on all Mercedes and Setra touring coaches to ensure compliance with the new fire protection standards that will be mandatory since July 2020.
