VDL DD FOR SWITZERLAND
THE NEOPLAN SKYLINER AWARD
T
he double-decker by Neoplan won the 2016 edition of the International Bus Competition (IBC). The Skyliner, available since last June also in the Euro 6 version, got the best score beating the other two double deckers in the week of testing: the VDL Futura and the Astromega by Van Hool. To convince the jury, composed of drivers with different drive style and professional backgrounds, it was the chassis, the passenger comfort and the workshop tests. Much appreciated also the side windows up to the top side (skylight), which provide a good view for those sitting on the side of the windows, and the five elements of windowed roof almost continuous letting in plenty of light on the aisle seats. Safety is another plus of this model. The jury did appreciated the braking distance of 39.8 and 39.1 metres, respectively measured by hot and cold brakes at a speed of 80 km / h, but also the accuracy of the steering and the vehicle’s balance.

THREE VDL PREMIERES
The Dutch manufacturer will present the new VDL Futura FHD2-106, the MidBasic Electric and the 9.9-metre version of the Citea LLE at the IAA in Hanover he new products of VDL Bus & Coach T will be in the spotlight at the 66th IAA in Hanover. In particular, there will be the com-
pact VDL Futura FHD2-106, the Citea LLE in the new length variant and the Mid Basic Electric. The Futura FHD2-106 is the latest in the Futura range aimed at meeting the demands of high-end tourism in compact size. Putting a stake on this version, VDL Bus & Coach, in fact, is targeting the VIP segment, smaller group eager to travel in luxury and comfort. Like the other Futura range models, it benefits from VDL’s modular design and completely flat floor, in addition to low net weight which helps in reducing the fuel consumption and running costs. The icing on the cake is the coach maximum maneuverability given the compact size.
The entire interior exudes a feeling of spaciousness thanks to matching colours, a balanced lighting concept and open luggage racks. The maximum seating configuration is 41/43 passenger seats, but there are lots of configuration possibilities as well as equipment choice. The luggage space, with a volume of 4.7 m3, is extremely ample. The showcased model will have an available face-to-face seating configuration of 34 + 1 + 1 luxury and comfortable upholstered seats. The 9.9-metre Citea LLE fitted with 27 + 2 + 1 seats will be unveiled too to the public in Hanover. The MidBasic Electric is a world premiere. This is a fully electric bus from the mini and midi range, specifically designed for transporting the small number of passengers in sparsely populated areas.
This vehicle has an innovative full electric powertrain, developed in collaboration with the Austrian company Kreisel. Depending on the selected powertrain and battery package, the range varies from 200 to 300 km. The base vehicle for the VDL MidBasic Electric is a 3.5-tonne Mercedes Sprinter. VDL Bus & Coach has replaced the diesel powertrain with a
fully electric powertrain based on high-quality components from various European suppliers. The electric motors have power ratings of 120 to150 kW. The patented Kreisel batteries are extraordinarily lightweight, and with capacities of 72 kWh (optionally 92 kWh). They are located under the vehicle without affecting the interior space where there is space for eight passengers. VDL will also be showing a 14.1m double decker VDL Futura FDD2-141 and outdoor, a MidCity and a MidEuro. During the show, test drives can be taken on the VDL Citea Electric and the VDL MidBasic Electric.

FROM REALITY TO DREAM The new proposals for the Mercedes and Setra bus ranges at the Hanover Motor Show. But the highlight of the performance will be the Future Bus, a prototype of a city bus with CityPilot autonomous driving, a result of experience gained by Mercedes in the truck sector. Futuristic exterior and interior design nnovations for the present and for the future IHanover. to be showcased by Daimler at the IAA in Available immediately the 10.7-litre OM 470 engine with even lower consumption and higher performance thanks to the technical prowess of the larger OM 471. So, a very steep increase in torque and power in the middle engine speed range, as well as a
reduction in the nominal engine speed from 1,800 rpm to 1,600 rpm. A new variant with a power output of 335 kW (456 horsepower) and torque of 2,200 Nm available upon request for the Setra ComfortClass is also being introduced. Mercedes will unveil the Citaro NGT at the IAA (already presented by BusToCoach in
June), while the Sprinter product range has been extended with the addition of a Sprinter featuring a permissible gross vehicle weight of 5.5 tons, more powerful engines and a new retarder for the Sprinter City 65. The LED headlights integrated into the Mercedes and Setra buses will also be premiered in Hanover (refer to the article of BusToCo-
ach in April 2016), in addition to the new Coach MediaRouter, comfort headrests and the Composition leather cover for the touring coaches. Mercedes will be handing over the keys to the 10,000th Intouro and will be celebrating the 10th birthday of the Tourismo. In the Setra area you can see the new S 418 LE business measuring 14.6 metres for suburban èè
services and a luxurious TopClass S 516 HDH with the 1+1 seating arrangement. Start dreaming looking closely at the Mercedes-Benz Future Bus. A city bus with City Pilot partially automated driving, which foreshadows the local public transport future: safer, more efficient and comfortable than traditional buses. The technology of the CityPilot is based on that of the autonomously driving Mercedes-Benz Actros truck with Highway Pilot presented two years ago. It has however undergone substantial further development with numerous added functions to meet the specific needs of a city bus. Consequently, for example, the CityPilot is able to recognize traffic lights, communicate with them and safely negotiate junctions controlled by them. It can also recognize obstacles, especially pedestrians on the road, and it brakes autonomously. It approaches bus stops automatically, where it opens and closes its doors. And last but not least, it is able to drive through tunnels. A dozen cameras - including the ‘mirror cam’
instead of exterior rear-view mirrors - scan the road and surroundings. Four short-range radar sensors mounted on the vehicle - two in the front section and two at the front corners – to cover distances from 50 centimetres to 10 metres ahead of the bus. In addition, two stereo cameras with a range of up to 50 metres allow 3D vision and recognition of obstacles and pedestrians. There is also a GPS system. Thanks to data fusion, all the data received create an extremely precise picture and allow the bus to be positioned to within centimetres. The Future Bus with CityPilot was tested in the Netherlands, on a stretch of a 20-km BRT route (Bus Rapid Transit) which links Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport with the town of Haarlem. This route has numerous bends and
passes through tunnels and across junctions with traffic lights. Although derived from the 12-metre Citaro city bus, the Future Bus will completely revolutionizes the aesthetic, characterized by asymmetrical lines for the roof profile, the side wall coating (with two central doors on the right side), the front and the rear part. It is worth noticing two light strips next to the Mercedes star below the windscreen, that change colour between white (manual mode) and blue (semi-automated mode). The same happens to the strips of the rear lights. Aesthetics and space planning is completely new in the passenger compartment either. It can be called an ‘open space’ divided into three zones: at the front near the driver is the
“Service” zone, in the middle the “Express” zone mainly for standing passengers and at the rear is the “Lounge” zone intended for a longer stay on board. The coatings are chromatic, the shining white shells of passenger seats are arranged along the walls, grab rails reflect the park-like theme by branching upwards like trees towards the ceiling and two embedded 43-inch monitors complete the construction of the interior. The driver also takes a seat in the futuristic cockpit of tomorrow, which is not compartmentalised – the driver area becomes part of the interior, and even manages without a partition and separating door. Conventional instruments are replaced by an informative 12.3-inch display with specific information. The data have been reduced to the essentials where vehicle functions are concerned, but considerably expanded with regard to route information. The Future Bus is powered by the OM 936 engine but can also rely on the natural gas version or, from 2018, the full electric traction. probably not all of them will be brought to Hanover. In the front line there was an 18-metre MAN Lion’s City G bus carrying up to 154 passengers, powered by the D2066 engine with an output of 360 hp and fitted with side wa-
lls glazed even under the windows in correspondence with the central area for the wheelchair. There was a 14-metre Skyliner powered by the 505 hp D2676 engine, with removable platform at the second entrance. Finally, there was a 13.8-metre Lion’s Coach
L powered by the new 500 hp D2676 LOH engine with Euro 6c emission level. However, the vision of a model that integrates different charging and energy storage systems for electric buses have been kept in reserve for Hanover. MAN is facing the first step of the electromobility program with a modular approach which offers the possibility to select and combine the charging technologies according to the needs and, similarly, the number of storage modules depending on the required range and transport capacity. As a first step, MAN is concentrating on the widespread technologies of rapid charging via pantograph (opportunity charging) and overnight charging, or a combination of these systems. By 2018, the MAN e-mobility roadmap will offer the public a pre-series bus version of a battery electric vehicle (BEV), while the series production of a 100 % electrically driven city bus will start before 2020. Before 2030,

HIGH-QUALITY AXLES
anticipaTHE tion of solutions to be presented at
the IAA in Hanover has served as opportunity to visit the department dedicated to the axle production at the MAN Truck & Bus plant in Munich. At this plant, inaugurated in 1955, the employees produce between 90,000 and 110,000 driven axles per year. In addition, there are approximately 55,000 drive-through axles and 6,000 transfer cases. These components are then supplied throughout the entire MAN group. Driven axles are produced in two main types. Hypoid axles are designed as modular units. A steel axle bracket forms the basis of this platform strategy and variably welded parts create the high level of variability. The axles are combined with the corresponding wheel hubs in combination with different gearboxes and transmissions. The entire processing of the individual components takes place at around 200 processing centres and using ten hardening systems. The most diverse and highly complex drilling as
well as milling procedures are applied in particular as part of housing production. The high levels of process expertise and the use of special tools enable highly precise production within the strictest tolerances. Cutting-edge measuring methods additionally record the quality and cost-related properties of tooling machines, equipment and tools to derive targeted optimisation measures. Consequently, it makes possible to guarantee equal levels of component quality. In addition to axle and gearbox housings, the plant production field includes wheel hubs, pla-
MAN Truck & Bus plans to have 50 % of its sales in the city bus segment consisting of emission-free vehicles. As for the coach, Man announced several measures to optimise the drivetrain for greater performance and lower fuel consumption. For the first time, the D26 can now also be operated with hydrotreated vegetable oils
netary carriers, steering knuckles and axle housings. The pivotal core competencies within the field of axle production are aimed at processing the diecast parts and producing the gearing components. Gear production stretches from the soft processing of blanks including the subsequent milling of gears to thermal treatment at the in-house hardening facilities as well as final gear hardening. Apart from many spur gear components, parts including the gear set are produced in-house at MAN. This consists of the crown wheel and drive belt and represents the core of the driven axle as it transfers the output from the universal shaft to the wheels. The axle housings are clamped onto automated guided vehicles (AGV) from which the axles are installed as part of flow assembly. Each operator at the assembly line records the processing step in the axle approval record. It represents an elementary component of quality assurance and records process data.

(HVO). In addition, the exhaust gas post-treatment has been improved and soon the D2676 LOH Euro 6c will replace the 400-hp D2066 LOH in MAN and NEOPLAN coaches as well as in the chassis. With regard to the MAN BrakeMatic electronic braking system introduction, MAN and NEOPLAN coaches and intercity buses will
soon feature the more powerful EVBec engine brake. Similarly, the TipMatic transmission will be matched to the D26 engines and will employ SmartShifting and Idle Speed Driving function that enables comfortable driving at idling speed without touching the accelerator. In addition to this, a new generation of the proactive MAN EfficientCruise cruise control is introduced into coaches including the EfficientRoll free-wheel feature.
MAN Truck & Bus will dedicate a separate area of their stand at the 2016 IAA to the subject of innovation and digitalisation and provide an outlook on upcoming new digital services and offers. Whilst the focus of this development will initially be on trucks, the bus division is to quickly follow in the framework of digitally based service offers with special added-value services for bus fleets of all segments from city buses to long-distance buses and touring coaches.

second door moved to the rear overhang and four stars interior with a capacity to accommodate 30 passenger seats plus kitchen and WC in the rear part. Loaded up to a total weight of 15,000 kg, the S 511 HD has traveled 354 kilometres of the route reserved by BusToCoach for touring coaches, consuming one litre of diesel per 4.76 km and traveling at the average of 79.9 km/h. As a result, the overall index performance is 9.51 points. An excellent result, taking into consideration that only the air conditioning system turned to full power interfered to prevent equal record set three years ago by its elder brother S 515 HD (refer to the table at the end of the article). First Euro VI to be tested, it has surprised everyone with its low fuel consumption (4.82 km/litre), thanks to the new OM 470 engine

of 428 hp (315 kW) belonging to the Mercedes Blue Efficiency Power generation. The S 511 HD is powered by the same engine but of lower calibration, delivering 354 hp (290 kW) and has a torque of 1,900 Nm. The long final drive ratio (3,583: 1) is identical and the coupling with the GO 250-8 PowerShift automated manual transmission is optional. A six-speed GO 210 manual transmission is standard. But if the barely detectable consumption level has already deserved to be recorded, in future we can expect even better results with the launch of the new optimized version of the OM 470 engine (they will be presented this month at the IAA in Hanover), promising a further consumption reduction by approximately 2.5%. The compactness has a primary importance for the S 511 HD alongside with the low fuel consumption since it results in enhanced maneuverability on mountain excursion routes or in case of reduced maneuvering space, easily addressed thanks to a turning circle between walls of as little as 17.53 metres. Moreover, the access configuration with the second door moved to the rear overhang allows for having a bigger room for the underfloor luggage compartment (measured volume of 7.5 cubic metres), compared to the classical solution with a second central door, which sacrifices about a cubic metre of available space. For the rest the ‘short’ version faithfully follows the aesthetic patterns of all the Comfort Class 500 models, including the presence of èè

(of) from Mercedes. This is the 10.7-litre OM 470 engine, delivering 394 horsepower (290 kW), 1,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 1,900 Nm at 1,100 rpm. There is a common rail injection system with X-Pulse pressure booster that ensures low consumption and emissions. The exhaust gas recirculation and a closed particulate filter have been added to the previous BlueTec technology with SCR and AdBlue to meet the Euro VI requirements. It should be stressed that the generating of oxides of nitrogen has been reduced and then the AdBlue consumption decreased (in our case, it has fallen to 2.8%) thanks to the gas recirculation. The particulate filter shall be replaced after 360 thousand kilometres of running, and then every 240 thousand.
