CONCEPT SPRINTER F-CELL
The special Mercedes-Benz Vans motorhome shows the advantages of the fuel cell in long-distance transport services ercedes-Benz Vans announces that in M the future it will integrate fuel cell technology into its eDrive@VANs strategy.
And for the moment, it displays the Concept Sprinter F-CELL, a partially integrated motorhome that offers the characteristic benefits of a fuel cell in the long-distance services: long range and low system weight, in light of great freedom of set up and fast refuelling. Not to mention that it offers zero local emissions. These qualities are significant not only in the field of motorhomes, but also in the commercial application of vehicles, such as parcel delivery services on long distances or minibuses on intercity services. As far as the choice of the right engine is concerned, Mercedes-Benz Vans focuses more than ever on the specific requirements of application and on concrete benefits for customers. It is therefore necessary to make a complete evaluation of the specific needs that, starting from on-board technologies,
takes into consideration the system weight, loading and refuelling times, range rand profitability. So: classic internal-combustion engine, battery-powered drive or fuel cells? In Daimler strategy, the choice depends on the best possible customer benefits. “We plan to offer every commercial range with an electric drive starting this year with eVito and in 2019 with eSprinter”, points out Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans. “With these two models, we will cover many, but not all, different types of employment with a local zero-emission powertrain. For this reason, we are enhancing our eDrive @ VANs strategy with fuel-cell drive, which offers substantial medium-term opportunities, especially in long-distance operation. The potential of this technology is undisputed. The Sprinter F-CELL Concept offers an insight today into the possibilities of the future”.

IVECO BUS IS HYBRID ORIENTED
18-meter Crealis Hybrid buses in the BHNS version were supplied by Iveco Bus to the French transport company SMTC Artois-Gohelle, for a high level of passenger service hybrid buses have become part of the 41 fleet of Syndicat Mixte des Transports (SMTP) Artois-Gohelle, a transport company
operating in the North of France. The company has chosen the Iveco Bus brand for new environmentally friendly buses purchased as part of the ‘Bulles’ project. This project started in May 2017 (the final launch will take place in January 2019) with the aim of creating seven transport lines with a high level of service for regularity, guaranteed travel times, accessibility, real-time information and comfort, in addition to parking, cycle lanes and interchange hubs. Buses to be used for this service on the Tadao network are Crealis hybrid buses supplied by Iveco Bus (size 18.395 mm) in the BHNS version (Bus à Haute Niveau de Service - Bus with High Level of Service). These vehicles can accommodate 157 passengers, of which 34 seated, or 154 passengers, of which 38 seated. The exclusive livery, chosen among other things by inhabitants who voted for their favorite icons, is characterized by the external decoration that also continues in the area of the bellows. The vehicle also stands out for its dynamic design, large glazed surfaces, high quality finishes and LED lighting, all for passenger comfort. "We chose these buses with a high added value because they represent the offer that best meets our expectations in terms of quality, comfort and respect for the environment,” said Laurent Duporge, President of SMT Artois-Gohelle. The Iveco Crealis bus is equipped with a Euro VI engine coupled to electric traction and a latest-generation lithium-ion battery pack. A powertrain management system optimizes fuel consumption and therefore emissions, recovering and storing the kinetic energy re-
leased during braking. The ‘Arrive & Go’ function switches to fully-electric mode, therefore with zero emissions, when approaching and leaving stops and traffic lights. According to the manufacturer, the fuel consumption per vehicle is reduced by 30% and CO2 emissions can be cut by up to 30% compared to a diesel bus: that is the equivalent of 35 tons of CO2 that are no longer released into the atmosphere every year. In addition to this, the 320-hp Tector 7 engine is compatible with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a second-generation biofuel produced from food waste and which can be easily mixed with diesel without altering the quality or influencing the proper functioning of the engine. The reduction of carbon emissions can therefore be increased to 90% compared to a traditional diesel engine. Crealis is manufactured by Iveco Bus in France at the historic Annonay plant. This plant, which boasts more than a century of
experience, employs approximately 1,400 employees and over 270 French suppliers and subcontractors. The vehicle is therefore an OFG product, that is ‘Origine France Garantie’.

The batteries can also be recharged during the journey thanks to a pantograph that connects to the charger either automatically or manually. The bus has a lowered floor and a capacity for 155 passengers. Thanks to an increase of 25% of the glazed surface and the use of transparent materials, on board is very well-lit. This model was awarded in Spain with the title of “Bus

verything is ready in Hannover for the E IAA Commercial Vehicles 2018, the commercial vehicle show organized every
two years by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). 'Driving tomorrow’ is the slogan that will mark this 67th edition. Digitization, connectivity, automated driving and alternative propulsion are the main topics of the event. With regard to the exhibition area, the organizers announce growing numbers. In the IAA preview conference, Bernhard Mattes, President of VDA said he is confident about the commercial vehicle market, a sector that is showing signs of development. And not only in Western Europe, but also in the new EU member states and in Russia. And also in the United States, not to mention China, the world’s largest truck market, which registered a double-digit increase from January to May 2018 (+ 12%). The Brazilian market is recovering, a matter of concern in the last few years. Great performance for India, which has grown by 49% this year. All the protagonists of the commercial and industrial vehicle industry and related supply chain are expected to display at the IAA. It should be underlined that the Volkswagen Group will exhibit under the umbrella brand of Traton Group. The new name is a result of the spin-off from the Wolfsburg Group of the Volkswagen Truck & Bus sector that took place last June. Traton therefore groups the brands MAN, Scania, Volkswagen Caminhoes & Onibus and Rio, all dedicated to the transport of people and goods. For bus manufacturers, the Mercedes Citaro electric bus will be the top product on display for Daimler, supported by the double-decker Setra S 531 DT and the new generation of Mercedes Sprinter minibuses (see article in the following pages). For the MAN Truck & Bus brand, the Lion’s City will be exhibited not only in the full electric version but also in the new gas-powered version. To these models, are added the double-decker Neoplan Skyliner with right-hand ladder and the MAN TGE minibus (see article in the next pages for further details). The Iveco parterre will be exclusively dedicated to solutions for alternative drive. An area without diesel fuel with 18 vehicles on
IAA 2018 “DRIVING TOMORROW”
This is the slogan of the 67th IAA Commercial Vehicles that will be held in Hannover in September. Exhibition spaces will be increased and many proposals will be in the spotlight
display among trucks, vans and buses. Iveco sustainable solutions will be launched on this occasion: from electric buses to long-distance LNG trucks. Electric drive for passenger transport will be represented by the GX Elec models of Heuliez Bus (a French company which is 100% controlled by the CNH Industrial group) whi-
ch are equipped with electric motor, modular batteries and can be recharged via pantograph. On display there will be also the new generation of Iveco Crealis trolleybus, which combines power from electric overhead lines with on-board battery energy storage. Last but not least, the Daily Electric, a solution suitable both for passenger transport and for the de-
livery of goods in urban centers. For natural-gas driven vehicles, will be displayed the Iveco Crossway Natural Power and five different models of the Daily Hi-Matic Natural Power. The Daily Hi-Matic is a naturalgas vehicle complete with eight-speed automatic transmission which is the best solution for various urban transport services. Scania will also be present at the IAA with proposals focused on energy efficiency, alternative fuels, smart and safe transport and electrification. Among other names of the bus sector, VDL Bus & Coach, Solaris and Irizar will not be exhibiting this year in Hannover. These companies have chosen to participate in the Innotrans in Berlin, the rail industry fair that will take place more or less in the same period of the IAA (18-21 September). Among the events scheduled during the seven days of the fair in Hannover, we highlight the ‘New Mobility World’ (NMW), the B2B event for tomorrow’s mobility. The NMW will focus on connected and automated driving, alternative powertrain, urban logistics and transport services. For these five topics the NMW will provide an open platform for decision-makers and designers to give information about how traffic, mobility and logistics can become more efficient, greener and smarter. With its three event formats (Expo, Forum and Live), the New Mobility World will give you an extensive program of experiences. The demonstration area of the New Mobility World will showcase the latest commercial vehicles, services and assistance systems. The demos will be projected on a large LED screen and broadcasted live both in German and in English. Selected demos will also offer visitors the opportunity to drive in the cockpit or try out the systems. The IAA Commercial Vehicles 2018 will be held as usual on the Hannover trade show grounds from Thursday September 20 to Tuesday 27. At the IAA a showcase of première for the MAN and Neoplan models. From the electric and gas-powered Lion’s City to the new touring models, up to TGE uly, Berlin, on the sunny runways of J the future airport, Man Truck & Bus lined up almost all what will be exhibited
in September at the IAA in Hannover. A vast array of models for good and people
transport was available to representatives of the international press, who could get on board to experience the latest innovations introduced on the entire range. Obviously, large space was dedicated to
trucks, with the TGX and TGS models equipped with ACC system with Stop&Go function and EBA2 as standard, or Turn-Assist camera. But also on display was the fully electric eTruck and a functioning preview of the platooning system: two trucks travelling technologically connected for automation of the latter. But let’s talk about buses. On display at the IAA, the new MAN Lion’s City complete with the MAN Efficient Hybrid hybrid module that uses recovered braking energy to save fuel, while the stop-start function supports super-silent and emission-free stop phases. In addition to the new design, it stands out from the previous model thanks to the independent front suspension, the main headlights, LED rear lights and new interior trimmings. The two-axle model that will be exhibited at the IAA will also be equipped with illuminated door closing edges indicating the opening and closing action of the doors in different colours. For the 18-meter Lion’s City, in Berlin we saw the special version for Ile de France Mobilités, with diesel D15 E6 engine,
fully enclosed driver’s seat, two-sided protected wheelchair area, USB charging sockets and translucent folding bellows to improve the internal brightness. At the IAA, the Lion’s City G will instead be exhibited in the CNG version with the new 280 or 320 hp MAN E1856 LOH gas-powered engine and EfficientHybrid module. The E18 engine has a displacement of 9.5 liters and is therefore lighter than the previous E28 (12.8 liters) version. It meets Euro 6d standards thanks to a new exhaust gas recirculation, coupled to a three-way catalyst. The flow of passengers and the seating capacity has also been improved. The four-door version boasts 39 seats. Visitors of the IAA will enjoy the world première of the prototype of the fully electric Lion’s City E. The design had been slightly modified according to the withdrawal of the engine housing (four additional seats) and the roof-mounted batteries. The fully electric motor on the second axle delivers 160 up to 270 (available also on the third axle in the articulated version). èè
LION’S CITY 18
Energy is supplied by 480 kWh (solo bus) or 640 kWh (articulated bus) modular batteries. The Lion’s City eBus ensures a range of 200 km in real conditions and for the entire battery life cycle. The batteries are charged at the depot via CCS connectors. With a power output of 100 kW the solo bus is fully recharged in less than three hours, while the articulated version in less than four hours. Times that can be further reduced with charging power output of 150 kW. The series production of the Electric Lion’s

CONSULTING AND SERVICES
the IAA in Hannover, MAN Truck AT & Bus will also be available to discuss the extensive services offered such as maintenance, repair, supply of original spare parts and accessories as well as financial services. In addition to this, the driver training courses aim at improving driving safety and achieve fuel savings of up to 10% through the combination of driver ability, forward-looking time management and economical route planning. An area will also be dedicated to the chalBus Modification Center. Also on display the Tourliner C decorated by the Berlin-based Klebebande art group, with 4-star seats for 48 passengers, a 470 hp powertrain and a MAN TipMatic Coach transmission. Finally, the minibuses built on the MAN TGE model launched two years ago in the van version complete the range. At the IAA will be exhibited the TGE 5.180 intercity model with seating arrangement of 14+1+1. It is 7.4 m long, it is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine with a displa-
lenges of switching to alternative drive systems. The experts of MAN Transport Solutions consulting team will answer all questions about the pathway from “low emissions” to “zero emissions”. One of the priorities of the MAN consulting team is the electrification of bus, truck and van fleets. Thanks to their experience, these consultants will be able to provide advice regarding not only the vehicle itself, but also relating to infrastructure and energy demand, as well as maintenance concepts and fleet design.

FOCUS ON THE e CITARO
The Mercedes Electric Citaro will be Daimler’s top proposal at the IAA in Hannover. The Setra S 531 DT and the new Sprinter City 75 will attract the same interest
he latest important innovations branded T Mercedes and Setra will be on display at the stand of Daimler Buses and will attract those who want to visit Hannover for the 67th edition of the IAA. Some of them have already been protagonists on the pages of BusTocoach Magazine, other are absolute premieres. As disclosed in last April issue, the Mercedes Citaro electric bus will officially debut; for those who missed it at the Busworld in Kortrijk last year, you can enjoy the new double-decker Setra S 531 DT (last May issue); and the absolute premiere of the new generation of Sprinter minibuses with focus on the Sprinter City 75.
At the stand you can also discover the latest safety systems and the range of Omniplus assistance services. With the launch of the eCitaro, MercedesBenz marks a starting point for energy-efficient electromobility that will see development in the next few years according to a tight schedule of innovations that will be introduced in the medium term. Starting from 2020 will be launched the new generation NMC batteries with capacity around 330 kWh (now is around 243 kWh) that ensure a range of 200 kilometers, compared to the current 150. At the same time, the use of solid-state batteries will be developed (see box), that èè
can further extend the range to 250 kilometers thanks to a capacity of 400 kWh. And for the same date the articulated bus eCitaro G with NMC or solid-state batteries will also be available. By 2022, however, the range will be further expanded with the fuel cell eCitaro that boasts a range of 400 kilometers. This is an innovative path that is part of the more general Daimler strategy that under the acronym CASE includes the concepts of connectivity (Connected), autonomous
drive (Autonomus), flexibility (Shared & Services) and electric drive (Electric), on which investments will amount to around 200 million euro by 2020. The design of the eCitaro stands out from the other models of the series for some elements (especially the front ones) taken from the Citaro Future Bus launched at the last edition of the IAA (see BusToCoach Magazine - September 2016). For energy accumulation it is equipped with modules of NMC batteries, each supplying
BATTERIES IN PROGRESS
the present state, the eCitaro is AT equipped with lithium-ion batteries with lithium-manganese-cobalt-oxide cells (NMC) but it is designed to accommodate next-generation batteries. The future NMC batteries, with greater capacity, will feature the same structure and identical connectors and could therefore replace the existing ones without problems. They’re expected to be available within the next two years. Simultaneously to this development, Mercedes-Benz is working on the optional use of future lithium polymer batteries. These batteries also belong to the family of lithium ion batteries, but in this case the electrolyte (always lithium), which is usually liquid, is in the solid state. For this reason they are called ‘solid-state batteries’.
Their quality consist of a higher energy density: with the same size they can guarantee 50% higher autonomy than the current ones, as well as enabling less charging times and an estimated longer useful life. In addition to this, the solid-state electrolyte can eliminate the main problem of current lithium batteries: overheating. Thanks to the absence of liquid substances, solid-state batteries can be installed everywhere. But solid-state batteries are very different from NMC ones in shape and size (they are more voluminous) and therefore not interchangeable with them, as well as not being suitable for fast charging. For this reason, in the future, the eCitaro will be offered optionally with either NMC or solid-state batteries.

25 kWh. In addition to two battery modules on the vehicle roof, the standard equipment includes four modules in the rear of the bus. Depending upon customer requirements, another two or four battery modules can be mounted on the roof of the eCitaro. With the maximum complement of ten battery modules, the eCitaro weighs around 13.44 tons. In conjunction with a maximum gross weight of 19.5 tons (European standard), this corresponds to a payload of
around six tons or 88 passengers. Particular attention was paid to the thermal management of the eCitaro. The high efficiency climate control system uses CO2 as a refrigerant and a heat pump warms or cools the passenger compartment. All components that disperse heat are interconnected and climate control is also based on the number of passengers on board. Compared with the current Citaro with combustion engine, the energy requirement for heating, ventilation and climate control has fallen by around 40 percent. For the Setra bus range, among the models on display, the spotlights will be focused on the double-decker S 531 DT with equipment tailored for touring or intercity lines, starting from the front access staircase on the right or left side behind the driver seat. It does not only boast qualities such as comfort, aerodynamics and fuel saving, but it also features standard equipment of èè
WORLD OF SERVICES
mniplus will showcase at the IAA in O Hannover a world of services for the Mercedes and Setra buses. Over 600 service
points throughout Europe represent the concrete and material part, while Omniplus On represents the digital part of the service. The Internet portal of the same name integrates all existing services and will soon enable all operators to access in a personalized way the services for which they have registered. Omniplus On provides three areas of intervention: vehicle availability, fleet management and communication. Omniplus On Uptime monitors the status of the vehicle system in real time: it monitors about 30 vehicle components and functions, including doors, engine management and exhaust aftertreatment. In case of
malfunction, the company is contacted by Omniplus 24h Service. Optionally, Omniplus 24h Service team will help the operator to find the most suitable workshop along the way. Omniplus On Monitor aims instead to expand and improve, thanks to telecommunication, the current standard fleet control services in terms of fuel consumption, driving style, operational data for each individual bus and location. The information can be viewed in the Omniplus On portal, both in desktop as mobile device compatible versions. Finally, Omniplus On Drive offers a series of functions to support the driver in the communication with the company (pre-departure check, fault reporting, messages).

complete safety devices, including the new Active Brake Assist 4 and an effective automatic fire detection and extinction system. Let’s go back to three-pointed star vehicles with the new generation of Sprinter minibuses (City, Transfer, Mobility and Travel), enriched with safety systems and driving assistance systems. The position of the dashboard controls is also new as well as the MBUX multimedia system with 7-inch and 10.25-inch touch screen. The new Sprinter buses will be launched initially in the Transfer 55 (22 seats), Travel 55 (19 seats) and City 45 (22 or 30 seats) versions. In addition to this, the Travel 75 (22 seats) and the City 75 (38 seats) will be available in the new 7-ton version.
The latter will surely be exhibited at the IAA. Thanks to the extended wheelbase it offers a very large lowered floor area. Other innovations that will be launched at the IAA will concern active safety system, starting with Active Brake Assist 4 (ABA 4), the braking assistance system with pedestrian detection, which will be fitted as standard on all Mercedes and Setra touring coaches from 2019. For braking assistance, city buses will be equipped with the Preventive Brake Assist, while for all models is available the Sideguard Assist, the first assistance system able to alert the driver of the presence of pedestrians, cyclists or fixed obstacles near the right sidewall. maximum power output of 420 hp (309 kW) coupled to the 12-speed TipMatic Coach automated transmission. Consumption is on average with Euro 6 buses manufactured by the competitors, ie above 4.5 l/km (4.55 to be exact) achieved by travelling at the high speed of 81.6 km/h. It should be underlined that the air conditioning system has always been in operation and that the equivalent amount of AdBlue (4.5% of diesel consumption) is also included in the average consumption. Some functions have helped to reduce consumption: Idle Speed Driving (keeps travelling at low revs from 1st to 6th gear) and Speed shifting (fast gear changes for 10th, 11th and 12th gear), as well as MAN EfficientCruise with EfficientRoll that takes advantage of the vehicle’s inertia, automatically shifting transmission to neutral position on downhill roads. The effect can be seen from the 5.95 km/l recorded in the downhill sections that increase the overall average to 4.99 km/l on motorways. Performance was good also on the road, ensured by the Premium Comfort Valve (PCV) hydraulic damping system on the air suspension which minimizes rolling and pitching and increases driver and passenger safety during braking. Obviously, during the maneuvering it is necessary to be aware that the vehicle is 13.1 meters long and has an overall diameter of 24.6 meters. But the absence of the third axle enables a luggage capacity up to 11 cubic meters (without toilet). Inside the coach, transmission soundproofing is good and there’s no junction creaking, a sign that assembly was completed carefully. It features LED lighting inside the luggage racks and on the vertical stri-
