P-51D MUSTANG ARF

Matt Boddington takes time out from his full size flying activities to assess this 750 mm Series warbird from Top R/C Hobby

T

he P-51 Mustang is probably one of the best known fighters of the Second World War and the ‘D’ version probably the best known version of all. Over the years it has been modelled in many forms and has certainly not been neglected by the kit producers. Recent improvements in the foamy market have also not missed out the P-51 and with the recent popular 750/800 mm size warbirds the Mustang has not been forgotten. One of the recent additions has been the Top R/C 750 mm P-51D, having recently reviewed the same company’s Skyraider and also one of the ‘other’ P-51 offerings I was keen to see how this P-51D stood up in the marketplace.

In the Box

The Top R/C Hobby P-51D comes in a reasonably large nicely decorated box that shows off this company’s other types on the side to tempt you into something else if the desire takes you!

30

As with the Skyraider before, opening the box and you are presented with some superb, highly durable Epoflexy mouldings of the P-51D. The scale outline seems to be very accurate and panel line and detail again looks very nice indeed. The P-51D comes in two versions of colour scheme as a Plug and Play. The version supplied for review was attractive silver with blue nose depicting ‘Moonbeam McSwine’. The one-piece wing comes ready to fit with two 9 g aileron servos already installed, as are the ailerons. Plastic hard points for the landing gear are fitted and there are moulded-in recesses for the scale drop tanks. The fuselage is a work of art and comes with 9 g rudder and elevator servos installed as is the DST brushless motor, and the 12 A ESC can be accessed by removing the top opening hatch that also allows access to the battery compartment. A scale 4-blade prop

and spinner finishes off the front-end. At the rear there is a beautiful scale tail wheel that makes a refreshing change from the usual last minute afterthought piece of wire stuck on the back! Top R/C Hobby should be applauded for the attention to detail on a relatively small model. The fuselage is finished off with a very nice scale canopy that is slightly spoilt by a midget pilot! Tail surfaces come as a fin and rudder assembly and a one-piece tailplane with elevators unit. The rest of the relatively low parts count include a nice scale main U/C, drop tanks

and a bag of hardware. Instruction manual, glue and an assembly screwdriver are also included.

Putting it Together

Well the parts count is very low so this shouldn’t be a long job! As always it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with all the components and read through the instruction manual before you start. Following the stages laid out in the instruction manual the first job is to install the U/C into the main wing. The gear is fixed and not retractable so if you prefer your warbird to look the part in the air then you may choose to leave the U/C off! For the purposes of this review I was going to at least start with the gear installed. The superbly detailed wire main gear legs slot into a plastic recess fitted in to the underside of the wing and are held in place by a single screw; this makes them nice and easy to remove should you wish to. The wing can now be attached to the fuselage. If you are using your own receiver it needs to be installed now. I used a Spektrum AR600 installed just in front of the rudder and elevator servos, and with the ailerons plugged in via the supplied ‘Y’ lead the wing was attached by means of a lug at the back under the radiator scoop and a single screw at the front. The tail surfaces can now be fitted and these fit by means of two lugs on the fin passing through the tailplane to make an empennage assembly. This assembly then slips onto the rear of the fuselage and is secured in place by means of two screws through the fuselage sides and into the lugs. If you do not want to have these as removable you can if you wish also secure the assembly with the glue supplied. The rudder and elevator pushrods can then be connected to the already installed control horns; it is always best to do this

Individual aileron servos fitted; note drop tank recess

Box and contents

The optional yellow/black chequered nose version ‘Double Trouble Two’ with the receiver powered up to ensure everything is centred. The LiPo battery is not included in the PNP version so I purchased a 7.4 V 1000 mAh battery and installed in the nose under the hinged battery hatch. We were now pretty much done, all that remained was to fit the drop tanks to the wing. As I was intending at some point to fly without the U/C, I fitted the drop tanks by means of Velcro so they could be removed

also otherwise on landing they could rip off and possibly damage the wing. With the LiPo battery installed the C of G worked out as per the instructions. No control surface deflections were given in the instructions so I set about 10 to 15 mm on all surfaces as a starting point, and that was it! A super looking model of the P-51D sat on the workbench all ready for a mission behind enemy lines – all we needed was some nice weather!
