RRCi STARTLINE WELCOME BACK! OR SEE YOU SOON? I think we could all be accused at some point in becoming a little jaded, or stuck in our ways with the types of vehicle we run (or race), and how we look at R/C in general. Like all types of hobby or interest, R/C tends to go in cycles and eventually even the most fanatical can lose interest and eventually move on to other things. In many cases its circumstances and things like concentrating on raising a family, leaving very little spare time (or cash) to continue racing or bashing. I think most of my close R/C friends have been through this at least once in their life (and some more than once!). After a period of time has elapsed we fall back into it, see what’s changed, how the technology has moved on, and take that first tentative step back into a hobby store (or more often than not, hit buy on an online purchase). But it’s not a bad thing, as it has the added benefit of in most cases re-affirming and rejuvenated our fascination and love for the hobby, and re-focussing our interest in something new and interesting. The excitement we once felt taking a kit home in anticipation of the build, or waiting for that RTR to arrive in a parcel returns with a vengeance and often we get even more involved the second time around, especially if, like me, you have younger siblings you want to introduce into the hobby. My son is just a little too young to fully appreciate it at the moment, but he watches me in action, giggles at my crashes, and I’m sure will be involved in some form when he grows up. I had a break like this between the late 90s and 2006. I had been into R/C since the age of eight and collected, built, run and broken more vehicles that I can list here. Then the world of work, family life and other hobbies took over and I simply didn’t have the time or money to sustain R/C as a hobby. I did occasionally go and run a car, but for a while the spark had gone and R/C faded into the back of my mind. Then one day I was in a newsagent and I picked up an issue of RRCi, I hadn’t read a copy for nearly five years and I was amazed what had changed. I read it from cover to cover (quite a few times) and within a week had sought out my nearest model shop (LHC), and bought a new 1/5th scale Thunder Tiger Motorbike, met Dez Chand while out running it, and the rest was history! Roll forward to 2015 and I’m now editing two R/C magazine titles, have been lucky enough to have been fully immersed in it for nearly a decade and have known and worked with some of the most amazing and inspirational people, from both the industry itself and the grass roots enthusiasts who keep it so buoyant. The hobby continues to amaze me, the technology improves year on year and with the advent of things like FPV (see the Wraith Spawn review inside) I can see it appealing to a far wider audience than ever. It’s never been cheaper to buy a really good quality vehicle like the LRP Twister MT we also feature in this month’s mag, or get into racing at club level. I just hope that anyone reading this that feels like they have become bored or the spark has left them and takes a break I guarantee that eventually they will come back. Things will look more exciting, new genres will have emerged and new technology will be available, then they can start the cycle over again, just with a bigger grin on their face this time around!

o, three issues ago we left you on a cliff-hanger…we had built our Yeti XL kit to a rolling chassis, just got the bodyshell back and fitted it and were ready to put in the electrics…here’s what happened next…

A Wish List of Components After chatting between the team we decided to go and visit Drew and Elliot at Logic RC www.logicrc.com and pick up a steering servo and a suitably powerful Castle Creations Motor and ESC package.

After our usual coffee driven chat (mostly about how bad the M1 road works were between Birmingham and London!) we got down to business. On steering duty we opted for the Alturn ABDS-996HTG HV. The main reason we

chose this servo was mainly down to all the upgrades we had ourselves done to the RTR and seen other end users undertake. The specs of this servo are pretty close to the ones most were using, but

also has the added advantage of being waterproof…something sadly we didn’t ensure when we upgraded our RTR, the main reason it only lasted a few runs before going to the big servo graveyard in the sky (Ok, the bin at RRCi HQ!).

The Alturn’s specs were pretty impressive for a standard sized unit at under £60: Weight 68 g, Torque at 6 V 25.8 kg/cm, Speed at 6 V 0.16 sec/60 deg, Torque at 7.4 V, a very impressive 30.6kg/cm, Speed at 7.4 V 0.14 sec/60 deg. The fact
