The Nautilus Maldives Nearing its Official Opening

T

he Nautilus Maldives, a privately-owned island located within the heart of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, has given notice that it is due to open its doors this coming November. The inspiration behind this 26-room boutique island resort is I. U. Maniku, a Maldivian entrepreneur with over 30 years business and resort ownership experience. “The Nautilus Maldives has been designed for the new generation of luxury travellers; travellers who are looking for transformative experiences and activities that they can share with those who matter the most to them,” said Maniku. All 26 houses provide guests with a suite, including a separate living room and bedroom. Just 15 one- and two-bedroom houses line the island’s beaches, hidden away among coconut trees, palms, and tropical greenery. 11 one- and two-bedroom houses stand on stilts over the lagoon.

Marriott Golf Expands to South Africa

M

arriott Golf, Marriott International’s global golf division, has expanded with its first-ever South Africa-based managed golf resort property. Located in Hermanus, which is near Cape Town, Arabella Golf Club, an 18-hole, Par 72 Championship course has consistently been ranked among the country’s top 10 golf courses. The eighth hole has been described as being among South Africa’s most beautiful par five’s, with the 18th hole also being labelled as one of the country’s finest finishing holes. The course was designed and built by acclaimed South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich in 1999.

Botswana Opens its First Diamond Museum

Four Seasons Johannesburg Welcomes Guest Chef

rench Michelin-starred chef, Vincent Lucas, was invited to create an intimate pop-up culinary experience at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg, South Africa. During the event, which was held this March, Johannesburg’s most discerning diners got a chance to taste Lucas' contemporary French cuisine, which he describes as “creative dishes inspired by tradition, and embalmed with distinct, refined flavours”. Lucas is chef and owner at Etincelles in Sainte-Sabine-Born, France and this pop up culinary season forms a collaboration with Goût de France, a global initiative by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which aims to boost the visibility of French cuisine on five continents. The international event also follows UNESCO’s goal to put French cuisine traditions on the world’s cultural heritage list.

otswana’s first diamond museum, The Adrian Gale Diamond Museum, has officially opened. Orapa, where the museum is located, is also the location of one of the world’s largest diamond mines. Speaking during its March 10 inauguration, Seretse Khama Ian Khama, president, Botswana, commented, “The museum is a legacy for future generations to appreciate the anchoring building blocks of this economy and country.” The museum was named after the late Adrian Gale, a former general manager of mining company Debswana's Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM). Gale sought to diversify the economic base of the Boteti region from mining, and the diamond museum is one of the first initiatives to be realised within his Orapa Today, Boteti Tomorrow project.

A

s travellers increasingly turn towards responsible travel and participative experiences becoming more mainstream, luxury travel operator &Beyond has launched a selection of Africa-based philanthropic itineraries. usit International announced plans to invest around THB660 million (USD21 million) for an approximate 26 percent share in NR Instant Produce (NRIP), a manufacturer and exporter of ready to cook and ready meals. To invest in NRIP, Dusit is said to establish a new subsidiary, named Dusit Foods. The investment approval process is to be completed at the end of March, and form part of Dusit’s three-pronged strategy for sustainable and profitable growth, which includes balance, expansion, and diversification. Suphajee Suthumpun, group CEO, Dusit International, stated that the investment would strengthen the Group’s investment portfolio, and is in line with its longterm operating plan. “With time, we hope to create a partnership with NRIP to develop a line of Dusitbranded, premium products for local and international consumer markets,” stated Suthumpun.

Couples have two choices; at Four Seasons Sayan, couples could exchange vows perched atop an infinity pool, surrounded by tropical gardens while having 180-degree sunset views; Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay boasts a beachfront wedding at Sundara, with the beach club featuring a 57 m pool that can be transformed into, what is reportedly, Bali’s longest floating aisle. The floating venue, part of the hotel’s new Ultimate Water Wedding Experience, is set to maximise the resort’s views and exotic ambience. Whether couples decide on a beach or mountain wedding, a specialist is assigned to them from initial enquiry through to their big day. In addition, the wedding specialist also manages the process for couples to legally marry.

he Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company announced plans to bring a resort to Nikko, Japan. In 2020, The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko, is expected to open and will be the brand’s first Japan-based resort to be set amidst a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko is set to feature 94 guestrooms and suites, each designed to provide guests with a view of either Lake Chuzenji or Mount Nantai. Dining options are expected to include an all-day dining restaurant, a lobby lounge and bar, as well as a Western restaurant. Fitness facilities and the signature Ritz-Carlton Spa will offer an opportunity for complete rejuvenation through treatment rooms and a private Onsen – Japanese hot springs. “Nikko has a long and rich history, making it an attractive destination, and is a growing location for overseas travellers looking to more deeply experience Japan and its culture,” said Paul Foskey, chief development officer, Asia Pacific, Marriott International.

Shama Hub Haikou Hainan will occupy an annex of a commercial complex developed by Guang Yue Jin Tai Group

NYX Hospitality Group has inked a management agreement for Shama Hub Haikou Hainan, China. According to a recent announcement from the hotel management company, the new address also introduces its Shama serviced apartment brand to Hainan, China’s southernmost province. Anticipated to open during the third quarter of 2020, Shama Hub Haikou will occupy an annex within one of the area’s tallest complexes, offering over 100 serviced apartments, with options of studios and one-bedroom apartments across various configurations. Facilities include a lounge area, gym and yoga centre, self-service laundry and meeting space. Located within the newly developed West Coast of Hainan’s capital Haikou, the property will neighbour the municipal government building.

tlantis Sanya has officially welcomed its first guests, with the 1,314-room property expected to vastly enhance Hainan’s tourism proposition. Included within its massive room inventory are 154 suites, five of which are underwater. Burgess Opens Cathay Pacific Debuts New Hong Kong Lounge Shanghai Office

ollowing the launch of its Asia arm in 2015, Burgess has opened a new office in Shanghai in partnership with IYAT. IYAT is a full service yachting company founded by Rock Wang and his wife Fay Duan to cater to the Chinese yacht market and employs over 20 staff in Shanghai and Beijing. The new partnership will focus on the superyacht segment (yachts above 30 m) and will see the three most experienced IYAT staff join the Burgess team, namely Wang as chief representative, China; Duan and charter representative, China; and Leon Li as yacht management officer. Jean-Marc Poullet, chairman, Burgess, Asia, commented, “Rock, Fay and Leon all bring strong yachting and technical experience.”

athay Pacific has unveiled The Deck, the airline’s newest lounge at Hong Kong International Airport. Located close to Terminal 1’s Gate 16, The Deck opened its doors on March 22, providing seating for 180 passengers within 823 m2. It is distinct from Cathay Pacific’s other Hong Kong lounges because it sits on a balcony. From The Terrace, an open-ceiling L-shaped veranda, featuring both table and individual seating, provides lounge visitors with panoramic views of the airport’s apron, taxi-ways and northern runway. The lounge is further equipped with a relaxation room zone featuring bespoke Solo chairs, as well as eight shower suites, washroom facilities and a range of seating throughout.

Corsini Collection Leaves Italy for the First Time

he only Australian showing of A Window on Italy - The Corsini Collection: Masterpieces from Florence recently opened at the Art Gallery, Western Australia. This is the first time the collection has toured elsewhere other than Italy, where it has been for 500 years. The exhibition features masterworks from the Italian noble Corsinis family’s private art collection, with Renaissance and Baroque paintings by Italian artists such as Botticelli, Tinoretto and Caravaggio. These artworks have been preserved over centuries, surviving World War II devastation and the Florence’s great flood.

elbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre partnered with Louis Vuitton to bring the brand’s Time Capsule exhibition to Australia. Exclusive to Melbourne, the exhibition commenced on February 24 and continued until March 21. The Melbourne edition was anticipated to have an Australian flavour to it, displaying key pieces including former Australia Cricket captain Michael Clarke’s cricket trunk, the 2015 Rugby World Cup trunk, and a trunk that belonged to David Jones’ wife, the man who created Australia’s oldest department store in 1838. The Time Capsule display took visitors on a journey through the history of the House, revisiting its landmark innovations in technology and design.

erth’s State Government announced it will be sponsoring the 2018 Swan Valley National Polocrosse Championships. The support will come through the state’s tourism authority, Tourism Western Australia (WA). The Polocrosse Championships are held every two years on a rotational basis around seven Australian States and Territories. Celebrating its 50th golden jubilee, this year’s event will be held from October 01 – 07. More than 570 players and grooms, known as strappers, will participate across the Championship’s seven days, across categories ranging from under 12 juniors to masters.

Sydney Airport Unveils New Boutique Concept

ydney Airport has unveiled a new, signature Beer DeLuxe bar and dining concept at Terminal 2 (T2) Domestic, following an extensive infrastructure development process. According to the airport, the new concept is anticipated to provide T2 customers with a modern bar offering where they can sit, relax and enjoy a meal and a quality beverage before boarding. Additionally, Beer DeLuxe’s concept aims to provide a fresh take on the traditional airport pub experience. Meanwhile, Glyn Williams, general manager, retail, Sydney Airport, revealed their overall plans are, “to enhance the airport experience through new dining concepts that meet customers’ needs.”

Marriott to Manage New Resort W Enters Central America with W Panama on Las Vegas Strip

M

arriott International and global development firm Witkoff announced a plan to open a new resort on 2755 Las Vegas Boulevard South. The integrated resort and casino, to be named The Drew Las Vegas, will debut the EDITION brand in Las Vegas and will also mark The Strip’s first JW Marriott property. Set to open in late 2020, the resort will feature nearly 4,000 rooms and suites as well as over 46,451 m2 of convention and meeting space. Once open, the hotels will be managed by Marriott International. As an integrated resort, The Drew Las Vegas will be home to a broad offering including a casino, hotels, convention facilities, entertainment, nightlife, retail and dining options merged into one cohesive guest experience.

Luxury Collection Opens The Santa Maria, Panama

he Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts announced the brand’s Panama debut after opening The Santa Maria, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Golf Resort, located minutes from Panama City’s city-centre. With this exciting opening, The Luxury Collection expands its South America footprint where it now operates six hotels and resorts. Located next to Costa del Este and Santa Maria business parks, the new hotel features 182 guest rooms and suites with authentic Panamanian design elements. The Santa Maria also offers a state-of-the-art spa, fitness centre, an outdoor pool and 743 m2 meeting and event spaces. The Santa Maria also boasts a 72-par golf course which is to be managed by Troon. Fairmont Austin Open to Guests

airmont Hotels & Resorts announced that Fairmont Austin officially opened its doors on March 05. The hotel boasts 1,048 guestrooms, five restaurants and bars, Downtown Austin’s largest outdoor pool and full service spa, a fitness centre, nearly 130,000 m2 of event space, and direct access to Austin Convention Centre via the Red River Canopy Walk. “A strategic opening for AccorHotels, Fairmont Austin is the first in a series of high-profile luxury developments marking a time of significant growth for the group and its brands in North and Central America,” said Kevin Frid, chief operating officer, North and Central America, AccorHotels. “Fairmont Austin will give the city the opportunity to host larger conferences and conventions, bringing more tourists and business travellers to the city, and employing more than 900 staff.” Fairmont Austin debuts as the group’s biggest US property, as well as the second largest Fairmont hotel globally, with regards to both room numbers and total meeting and event space.

Guests enter W Panama on Evolution Tower’s 15th floor

W

Hotels Worldwide announced it has officially opened W Panama, Central America’s first W-branded hotel. Located within the 50-storey Evolution Tower on Calle 50, the 203-room hotel features views overlooking the nearby bay and canal. Each room features modern twists on handmade Mola fabrics and patterns from the local Guna and Emberá communities. W Panama also brings two new culinary experiences to Panama City; Moró offers signature dishes using local ingredients, and La Cajita is modelled after food truck service and style. Adding to the guest experience, W Panama offers the W brand’s signature Whatever/Whenever service. Visitors can recharge at the 325 m2 fitness centre at Away Spa. Additionally, W Panama offers a 1,950 m2 meeting and event space.

Mandarin Oriental Makes Chile Entrance

M

andarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced that it will manage a new urban resort that is currently under development in Viña del Mar, Chile. The property will be a partner to Hotel Santiago and will rebrand as Mandarin Oriental, Santiago following the first phase completion of a renovation later this year. Mandarin Oriental, Viña del Mar is scheduled to open in 2020 with 195 guestrooms and suites. The property will have an oceanfront position with direct beach access and proximity to the city’s main shopping destination. Facilities at the hotel will include an all-day dining venue and bar, as well as a range of flexible meeting facilities, ideal for social and business events. There will also be the boutique Spa at Mandarin Oriental, a fitness centre, a large indoor swimming pool and a dedicated children’s swimming pool.

American Airlines Welcomes New Onboard Chefs

A

merican Airlines is offering new premium cabin meals with locallyinspired cuisine on some of their long-haul flights. Jun Kurogi, owner, Kurogi Shiba Daimon Tokyo, is to join the team with traditional Japanese meals, and they are expected to be available only for premium cabins on flights from Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita to the US. Meanwhile, renowned Chef Sean Connolly's menu will enter premium cabins on flights from Auckland and Sydney to the US. Included within the full menu is a small appetiser, a salad, four main dishes and a dessert. Additionally, Chef Maneet Chauhan is using her culinary expertise to design the premium cabin menus on flights from China to the US,

Voom Helicopter Booking Platform Enters Mexico

M

exico City has welcomed Voom, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus Helicopters, after it launched its helicopter booking platform into the Mexican capital. Mexico City is the second city to launch Voom, since it has a population of 23.9 million people, and boasts a substantial helicopter infrastructure with more than 200 helipads within its metro area. Mexico also has a dedicated air traffic control for helicopters, allowing for more efficient air transportation. Voom will be available at several locations, including; Montes Urales and Interlomas, plus Mexico City and Toluca airports. Operating as an on-demand helicopter booking platform, Voom allows passengers to request a seat on a helicopter within minutes.

HAL’s Nieuw Statendam Gets More Staterooms

H

olland America Line’s (HAL) Nieuw Statendam which is slated to debut this December from Fincantieri Shipyard, Marghera, Italy, will feature distinct stateroom enhancements, among its new offerings. The newest 2,666-guest Pinnacle-Class ship will have eight more staterooms than sister-ship Koningsdam, and all categories have been re-imagined from top to bottom to showcase more thoughtful touches and innovative additions. Among the most noticeable enhancements is the redesigned Pinnacle Suite, the largest on the ship, which covers an expansive 120m2 with a bedroom, living room, dining area, dressing room and private verandah with whirlpool. Nieuw Statendam still displays all stateroom hallmarks introduced on Koningsdam, including single-cruiser accommodations, as well as a wider range of suite configurations. “As with every new ship, we have listened to guest feedback and made our own assessments that have led to exciting changes to Nieuw Statendam that will enhance our stateroom experience across every category,” said Orlando Ashford, president, HAL.

umeirah announced it has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi United Hospitality LLC to develop Jumeirah Al Wathba Desert Resort. Expected to open its doors this September, the resort will cover a 20,000 m2 area and feature 90 rooms and 13 villas, with complementary premium facilities, including an all-day-dining restaurant, pool and rooftop bars. ir Charter Service reported this year was anticipated to be its busiest in terms of charter flights to the Six Nations rugby tournament, held between February 03 – March 17. At some matches, such as the Scotland vs. France at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, five percent of the stadium flew on aircraft chartered by Air Charter Service, the company revealed. Justin Bowman, group CEO, Air Charter Service, elaborated, “We [had] more than 14,000 passengers scheduled on almost 100 flights over the seven week duration, with the majority from England and France.” Noting that a study summarised the Six Nations as having the highest average attendance per match of any tournament in world sport, Bowman added that it certainly seemed to be the case in 2017. “We arranged more than 70 flights in total for the championship, but the number is even higher this year,” said Bowman. Bowman outlined that with the Winter Olympics having concluded and the FIFA World Cup coming up this summer, Air Charter Service was expecting an exceptionally busy year for sports charters.

Le Touquet Golf Resort’s La Mer and Golf d’Hardelot’s Les Pins d’Opale launched 90 years ago, and triggered the golden age of golf travel for France’s Channel-facing Côte d'Opale. After its restoration, Le Touquet Golf Resort’s La Mer climbed 21 places to finish 35th, securing a top 10 position within the country’s best layouts, while Golf d’Hardelot’s Les Pins d’Opale became the new rankings’ highest-rising course, jumping 36 places to 23 and securing seventh nationally.

The new rooms were included within renovation plans that house paintings on level two of the Richelieu wing. The concert, which took place on April 07, showcased the works of American composer, Leonard Bernstein, on the centenary of his birth. Conducted by Wayne Marshall, the evening featured MPO’s Chorus together with 10 soloists. The focal point was an extensive selection of music from Bernstein’s celebrated musical West Side Story and the performance of Chichester Psalms. Generally, the orchestra began at Manoel Theatre Orchestra in 1968. The C-inC’s last conductor, Joseph Sammut, remained at the helm until his retirement in 1992. Since then, the orchestra has also been under the direction of Michael Laus, Brian Schembri and Joseph Vella.

Limited Edition Range Rover SV Coupé Revealed to Qatar Alfardan Premier Motors, the Qatar retailer of Jaguar Land Rover, hosted an event for the introduction of the limited-edition two-door Range Rover SV Coupé. Created by Land Rover Design and Special Vehicle Operations, the new Range Rover SV Coupé boasts the signature panoramic roof, close doors with frameless glass and semi-aniline leather front seats. Furthermore, the newly-designed car features a new contour graphic design which is available with four duo-tone colourways and a 23-inch wheel option. SV Coupé has been announced as the fastest full-size Range Rover, with a 165mph top speed, and is powered by a 565PS five-litre Supercharged V8 petrol powertrain. No more than 999 SV Coupés are planned to be hand-crafted by SVO for clients worldwide.

35 model year 2018 Rolls-Royce Ghosts have been created

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced the creation of a collection of 35 model year 2018 Rolls-Royce Ghosts, created to celebrate to the original Silver Ghost’s achievements. 35 patrons of the marque will delight with a contemporary re-make of automotive history at the Home of Rolls-Royce (Goodwood, West Sussex, the UK), as Rolls-Royce Motor Cars envisions the Silver Ghost Collection. Careful consideration has been paid to the defining features of this collection. References are said to be hand-crafted into Ghost’s interior and exterior, creating a contemporary homage which speaks as much of today’s brand as the Silver Ghost does of its day.

Ovolo Australia Unveils New Dining Concept On March 22, Alibi restaurant officially opened at Ovolo Woolloomooloo Hotel. Alibi was established by Matthew Kenney, a renowned US plant-based chef, restaurateur and global plant-based dining pioneer. This is his first Australian venture and is anticipated to offer a seasonal, colourful and innovative menu designed to share alongside a cocktail and wine programme. Alibi features lounge and bar seating, plus share tables. It is said to be an alternate destination for the already established Woolloomooloo dining hub, especially for people who embrace a healthier lifestyle. The new menu, overseen by Kasper Christensen, group executive chef, also extends to Ovolo Woolloomooloo’s breakfast, room service and conferencing offering, with a focus on, but not exclusively, plant food. Girish Jhunjhnuwala, CEO, Ovolo Hotels, enthused, “We have listened to the market so we made the decision to partner with Matthew to develop a new plantbased concept not yet seen at an Australian hotel.”

New Zealand Embraces Maori Food Revolution Incorporating Maori tradition and unique indigenous foods into their menus, New Zealand chefs have been spearheading a kai (food) revolution. The country’s tourism board, Tourism New Zealand, reports traditional cuisine is now celebrated at hundreds of local restaurants and cafés. “Recently, the influence of Maori tradition and indigenous kai have been recognised as nationally recognised taonga (treasures), providing a point of difference that innovative cooks and chefs are proud to incorporate in their menus,” noted Tourism New Zealand.

Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta Host Michelin-starred Italian Chef Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta hosted Michelin-starred chef Valentino Palmisano at its Alto Restaurant and Bar this April. Palmisano temporarily swapped Vespasia Restaurant at Palazzo Seneca, Norcia, Italy for Indonesia. He offered an eight-course degustation menu, where Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta guests and other diners could experience samples of the chef’s signature dishes. The event took place from April 19 – 21. Having become one of the best-known interpreters of Italian cuisine across Asia, Palmisano was once listed among the top 10 best Italian chefs abroad by Arbiter, an Italian men’s fashion magazine, Palmisano more recently resettled back in his native Italy, where he received his Michelin star at Vespasia Restaurant. Trained at the same school where chefs such as; Alfonso Laccarino, Bruno Barbieri, Pino Lavarra and Oliver Glowig trained, Palmisano also worked with fellow chefs; Riccardo La Perna, Massimo Bottura, Domenico Lavarone and Gaetano Trovato, to devise the Dining with Valentino programme of gourmet events.

Montfermeil Bee Creation Fashion Show

M

ontfermeil Cultures and Creation fashion show, sponsored by LVMH Group, took place on February 10. Titled, Fêtes, la mode, meaning celebrate / make fashion, the show featured young local talents, giving them an opportunity to present their work to a professional jury. This year’s Creation theme was Festival, and designers competing for the Young Talent Prize, were given the additional challenge of creating a piece representing the Festival of Bees. The prize, awarded by top fashion professionals, went to Anne-Solene Rives, while the special jury prize was awarded to Jeanne Paillard. Giant fashion brands also took part, with Louis Vuitton donating fabrics, Guerlain helping train models and provided makeup specialists, and Christian Dior inviting participants to visit their exhibition at Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.

ILTM Latin America Heading to Sao Paulo

R

eed Exhibitions is due to introduce ILTM Latin America to Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 08 – 11 at Bienal Pavilion. The event organiser revealed that it chose to bring the luxury exhibition to Brazil due to the increased spending of Brazilians on trips abroad. The number of Brazilians with more than BRL1 million (USD300,000) investments grew by over 17,000 during 2017, an increase of five percent year-on-year. In January alone, Brazilians spent USD2 billion on trips abroad - 26.7 percent higher than the same period of 2016. ILTM Latin America, previously known as Travelweek Sao Paulo, is expected to not just reach agents representing Brazilian clients, but also Latin America’s wealthiest travel and tourism players, choosing their guests from 12 regional countries and 25 cities across Brazil.

Key Changes at Luxperience 2018

D

iversified Communications announced several key changes to its upcoming Luxperience exhibition, scheduled to be held from September 16 – 19. Commenting on the changes, Kieron Haycock, general manager, Diversified Communications Sydney, said, ‘‘Our goal is for Luxperience to be the best luxury travel event in the world, and we are committed to reviewing every aspect of the event, amplifying and improving, and doing things differently to make things better.” Changes include an additional AUD250,000 (USD192,255) investment into future Luxperience events from 2018 onwards, and Luxperience veteran Michelle Papas being promoted to the role of event director. Also commenting on the event’s enhancement, Papas, revealed, “Our primary focus for the coming years will be the ultra-high net worth individuals, as we have over 17,000 in the Asia Pacific region alone, and it is expected to increase by 70 percent by 2026.”

Medieval Jousting Tournament at Blenheim Palace

The happening will be complete with authentic tilt yard, royal box, falconry, archery and hand to hand combat. Recreating the jousting matches of Britain's past, participating nights and horses will be costumed with chainmail and steel armour,

highlighting the period between 1200-1250. Knights will also be using 4.27 m lances and riding at full gallop. The weekend will be packed with historic action and family friendly entertainment, from thrilling falconry displays to 'have-a-go' archery and, what organisers describe as, ‘baby dragons’. Families can also expect to enjoy food, refreshments and tournament treats on the South Lawn, along with a medieval stand with plenty historically themed goodies.
