welcome Port of Dubuque

GREETINGS As Mayor, and on behalf of the 58,000 residents of Dubuque, I thank you for your interest in Iowa’s first city … our “Masterpiece on the Mississippi!” Dubuque is blessed with a hardworking, skilled and educated workforce, supported by numerous quality private and public institutions of higher learning. We promote citizen involvement and community engagement in developing our City’s vision and priorities which is why Dubuque has been recognized among the top cities in the Midwest to raise a family, have a meaningful career, start or grow a business, and enjoy life! Dubuque is considered the “birthplace of Iowa” and features a rich history, interesting architecture, and abundant natural beauty. In addition to excellent accommodations and conference settings, Dubuque features the Port of Dubuque’s breathtaking riverwalk along the Mississippi, award-winning restaurants, charming shops, art and river history museums, elegant turn-of-the-century homes, and many other attractions. Since 2006, Dubuque has become a leader in the practical application of sustainability principles represented in the citizen-developed, City Counciladopted, and community-supported initiative known as “Sustainable Dubuque.” This focus offers a balanced approach to life quality in the areas of economic prosperity, environmental integrity, and social/cultural vibrancy (see www.sustainabledubuque.org). “Smarter Sustainable Dubuque,” our collaboration with IBM Research to become IBM’s first “smart city” in North America, has allowed us to share our story around the nation and the world. In Spring 2015, Dubuque was awarded a 4-STAR Community Rating for national excellence in sustainability, becoming just the third Iowa community and the 25th in the nation to achieve certification under the national STAR Community Rating System (STAR). In late 2014, the White House named Dubuque one of 16 Climate Action Champions, a diverse group of communities defining the frontier of ambitious climate action whose approaches can serve as a model for other communities to follow. The Intelligent Community Forum named Dubuque as one of just five U.S. cities named the world’s “Smart21 Communities” of 2015. Other important recognitions stemming from our public/private partnerships have resulted in the coveted Outstanding Tourism Community of the Year award from the State of Iowa and the 2013 All-America City designation by the National Civic League, the third time in six years! Our community was honored to be named one of the 2013 10 Great Places to Live by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People five times by the America’s Promise Alliance. In 2010, Forbes recognized Dubuque as the Best Small City to Raise a Family, and in 2008 the U.S. Conference of Mayors selected Dubuque as the Most Livable Small City in the nation! I invite you to visit Dubuque soon and enjoy all the amenities our All-America City has to share, including our free trolley service (Memorial Day weekend through October)!

Mississippi Riverwalk & American Trust River's Edge Plaza

Along the River... The Mississippi River has influenced the heritage and make up of Dubuque's vibrant culture. Thanks to its location along the world's fourth longest river, Dubuque's economy has been heavily influenced by the waterway. Founder Julien Dubuque was the first permanent settler to the area. He quickly established relationships with the Mesquakie Indian Tribe which led to a growing trade market. Once the area was chartered in 1837, industry grew rapidly. While initially known for its fur trading and lead mining, settlers brought new business, such as button making, boat construction and millworking, along the river.

At the turn of the century, Dubuque's Millwork District was booming. Logs that had been floated down the Mississippi River were transformed by master craftsman at dozens of companies. Today, these historic warehouses have been given new life with an expansive renovation project. The CARADCO building is home to a variety of businesses including retail, art galleries and more. Dubuque's connection to the river is evident when you visit the Port of Dubuque. The $400 million riverfront revitalization has gained national recognition. Most recently, Dubuque was named fourth Best American Riverfront in USA Today's 10Best.com poll. Dubuque ranked in the top ten with communities like Wilmington, NC; Spokane, WA; and Savannah, GA. Dubuque's riverfront is full of opportunities for a vistior. Take a relaxing ride aboard an authentic paddlewheeler or paddle the

Heritage + History

As Iowa’s oldest city, Dubuque has a lot to offer. Here are some unique historical facts & folklore to aid you on your next visit to the area.

1788

French Canadian fur trader, Julien Dubuque becomes the area's first permanent settler.

1833

1856

The historic Shot Tower was built to produce lead shots for the military.

Thanks to the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty, Dubuque is open for settlement. By 1837, the area was known as Dubuque, named after it's founder, Julien Dubuque.

FOUNDER JULIEN DUBUQUE

Mines of Spain Today

The first permanent settler to Dubuque was a French-Canadian fur trader, Julien Dubuque. Julien Dubuque arrived in 1788. After hearing the stories of rich lead deposits mined by the Indians to the south, he followed the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Catfish Creek and the village of Kettle Chief of the Mesquakie in 1788. He quickly succeeded in obtaining their friendship and permission to mine the lead. His connections in St. Louis made it a profitable partnership. Dubuque built a farm, blacksmith shop, smelting furnace, and trading post as well as expanded the lead mines. He obtained a grant from the Spanish Governor General for an area 21 miles along the Mississippi River and 9 miles inland. He named his claim the Mines of Spain. In 1810 Julien Dubuque died. After his death, the Mesquakie allowed no one on their lands to mine the lead. His Mesquakie partners buried him on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi and Catfish Creek. As the lead rush grew, the pressure to open the Dubuque area to settlement increased. The Black Hawk War of 1832 resulted in the United States government purchase of the area west of the Mississippi River including the lead region. On July 4, 1838 the Iowa Territory organized including Dubuque. On December 28, 1846, Iowa became the 29th state in the United States.

1897

The romanesque style brew-house, Dubuque Star Brewery, was built in what is now the Port of Dubuque.

80 years after Dubuque's death in 1810, the Julien Dubuque Monument was erected. Today, this 29 foot high, 12 foot in diameter stone structure is still visible to the public at the Mines of Spain.

Historic Millwork District

HISTORIC MILLWORK DISTRICT Dubuque’s revitalized Warehouse District once housed the largest mill working plants in the world, producing millions of doors, windows, mouldings, and window sash. The buildings covered more than 20 acres, and employed 2,500 people. A vibrant manufacturing culture thrived on the lumber floated down the Mississippi River from Northern Wisconsin. One company, the Farley and Loetscher Company, built a lumber shed from 60 foot timbers purchased when the St. Louis Exposition closed. That shed housed 6 million feet of lumber. Farley and Loetscher once employed 1,250 workers and in the 1930s added a plastics division that covered three acres. Change is constant and by 1960, employing only 500 workers, Farley and Loetscher sold its plastics division and closed permanently in 1962.

1989

2014

Dubuque was named fourth Best American Riverfront by readers of USA Today's 10Best.com.

Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa. This catch phrase got its fame from the Academy Award nominated film, Field of Dreams, primarily shot in Dyersville, Iowa.

now

Voices of the Warehouse District

When the Warehouse District flourished employees walked to work, shopped in neighborhood stores, and relaxed at neighborhood venues. Before the concept of being green prompted people to conserve, the manufacturers used sawdust and wood scraps to heat their buildings. With the closure of the businesses, the connectedness of the neighborhood disintegrated. Gronen Properties bought the warehouse property and in 2010 restoration of the buildings into apartments, businesses, galleries, green space, and much more began. Once again the area bridges employment, residences, and entertainment with the city as residents can walk to work, enjoy shops, and experience being in a thriving, healthy neighborhood.

Today, Dubuque is home to nearly 58,000 residents and has been recognized nationally for its redevelopment and reinvention.

Hotel Julien Dubuque

Capone Suite at the Hotel Julien Dubuque

HOTEL JULIEN DUBUQUE

This hotel has had a long and exciting history. Before there was a Hotel Julien, the Waples House stood at the corner of Main and Second Streets. Built in 1839 by successful merchant, Peter Waples, the Waples House was the first building seen by travelers crossing the Mississippi River. Standing four stories in height and known for its extravagant furnishings and gourmet cuisine. Al Capone used Dubuque as a headquarters when conditions for him were too intense in Chicago. According to a retired housekeeper, he and his entourage took over the eighth floor. It was rumored that he once owned the property and had an underground passage to a garage across the street. Today, visitors can stay in the Capone Suite consisting of two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a kitchen, dining and living rooms. The pantry even sports a bank vault door. courtesy of Susan Hellert
