D

ubuque is where Iowa started. It’s where limestone bluffs meet the Mississippi River. Where you’ll find Iowa’s longest-running farmers’ market or an up-and-coming night market. Where 17 miles of mountain bike trails can be found embedded throughout rolling hills and limestone rock. It’s where a night out is served with a side of live entertainment. Dubuque is where the quirk of the world’s shortest, steepest railway is matched by stunning views found at the top. Where outdoor adventures can be found above, on, and below ground level. It’s where you’ll come to visit but want to stay. Dubuque is #WhereIowaStarted.

# HIST ORY

A tale of

IOWA’S OLDEST CITY

D

ubuque is proud to be #WhereIowaStarted. Here are some things that have happened since Dubuque got its start.

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

1785

Before becoming a formal U.S. settlement, the Meskwaki Tribe cared for the land and resources found along the Mississippi River valley. The first permanent European settler to the area was a French-Canadian fur trader named Julien Dubuque, who befriended the caretakers of this area and would go on to settle it.

1833 Under the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty in 1833, the United States Government opened the area for settlement. It came to be known as Dubuque when chartered in 1837. Iowa later became a state in 1846, 13 years after the treaty. Dubuque truly is where Iowa started!

18

120 Feet Tall

1856 Dubuque’s Shot Tower was built in 1856 to produce lead shot for the military efficiently. Molten lead poured through a grate at the top of the tower. Then, the relatively uniform drops fell from the grate and landed in the water below, which cooled the lead into its solid state. The tower has burned (interior only), been hit by a train, repaired, and renovated to its current state. DUBUQUE ON THE MISSISSIPPI 1788-1988

1897

1920s

Eighty-seven years after Dubuque’s death in 1810, the Julien Dubuque Monument was erected to mark his burial spot. Today, this 29 foot high, 12 foot in diameter monument is still visible to the public at the Mines of Spain. This structure resembles a medieval form and is made of Galena limestone mined from a nearby quarry.

Hotel Julien Dubuque has hosted many famous guests, but none as notorious as Chicago gangster Al Capone. When things were 'too hot to handle' in Chicago, it is rumored that Al Capone would hide out at this historic hotel. He reportedly used a nearby underground garage to conceal his presence in Dubuque.

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

"Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa." This phrase got its fame from the Academynominated film Field of Dreams, primarily shot in Dyersville, Iowa, in 1988 and later released in 1989. This iconic movie featured Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, and James Earl Jones. Recently, the movie site made history as it held the first Major League Baseball game in Iowa on August 13, 2021. (Learn more about the movie's legacy on page 41.)

Proving Grounds is named after the area of land once used by John Deere Dubuque Works to ‘prove’ and test equipment. This trail system was professionally built with swift timber runs, dedicated jump lines, flow, rollers, and berms. Trail difficulty is a mix of blue & black trails with a beginner loop and a small skills park.

Traverse through 21 miles of deep forest, prairie grasslands, and limestone bluffs at Mines of Spain. This state park is just minutes from downtown Dubuque, making it the perfect quick hiking getaway spot for adventure at a moment's notice. (Looking for an accessible trail? Check out the Woodland Walk.)

Soar high above the tree tops of Union Park for a day of ziplining at Sky Tours Zipline. This guided tour over the ruins of an early 1900s entertainment destination is a must for history buffs and adventure seekers. Must be ten years of age or older.

Take a relaxing paddle through the streams, creeks, and rivers of where Iowa started by kayak. Travel along the Mississippi River between A.Y. McDonald Park and Massey Marina Park. This trail has several access points, including one in the Mines of Spain, where you can paddle a five-mile loop on Catfish Creek.

Known for supper clubs, dairy production, & breweries, Wisconsin is just a short drive from Dubuque. Hit the Great River Road from Dubuque to Millville, Iowa, where you will board the Cassville Car Ferry. This short ride will take you across the mighty Mississippi River to Cassville, Wisconsin. Once in Cassville, head to Nelson Dewey State Park. This area overlooks the Mississippi River from a 500 foot bluff. From Cassville, continue east on the Great River Road to Potosi. Here you will find the historic Potosi Brewing Company. Founded in 1852, the brewery today features an on-site

restaurant, the National Brewery Museum, and offers brewery tours to the public. Next, drive southeast to Dickeyville and see the famous Dickeyville Grotto. Father Matthias Wernerus, a Catholic Priest, spent five years (from 1925-1930) building and collecting the bright-colored objects, materials, and stones set in the mortar that can still be seen today. While in Dickeyville, stop at local favorite, Hauber Brand Meats, and fuel up on locally sourced goodies for the rest of the trip.

From there, take a short drive to Galena for a day of shopping or go a little further to play a round of golf at Eagle Ridge Resort. When your Galena area adventures are through,

continue down Highway 20 to stop at Elizabeth’s Grant Antique Company, a historic school building turned into three floors of antiques! Explore the many treasures found in this historic building. Next, you'll travel to Savanna. Here you’ll find Mississippi Palisades State Park, Iron Horse Social Club, and Manny’s Pizza. In 2018, Scharpf was featured as a contestant in Bravo's 'Top Chef' Season 16 and has also cooked dinner at the esteemed James Beard House in the West Village of New York City. More recently, Scharpf developed the Birds. food truck as well as Brazen Reserve.
