limestone bluffs meet the Mississippi
DUBUQUE IS WHERE IOWA STARTED. It’s where limestone bluffs meet the Mississippi River. Where the quirk of the world’s shortest, steepest railway is matched by stunning views found at the top. Where history can be felt at every turn with brick-lined streets and storied architecture. It's where state-of-the-art cruise vessels make port alongside historic paddle wheelers. Dubuque is where you’ll discover two Smithsonian-affiliated museums and over 50 murals that have earned national acclaim. Where markets take place year-round and local goods are shared by good locals. It’s where you’ll come to visit but want to stay. Dubuque is #WhereIowaStarted.

A TALE OF IOWA'S OLDEST COMMUNITY
HISTORIC SHOT TOWER
Dubuque’s Shot Tower was built in 1856 to produce lead shot for the military. Molten lead poured through a grate at the top of the tower. Then, the relatively uniform drops fell from the grate and landed in the water below, which cooled the lead into its solid state.
Origins
The Meskwaki Tribe cared for the land and resources along the Mississippi River valley.
The first Farmers' Market was held in Dubuque. The event continues today as Iowa's oldest farmers' market.
1909 EAGLE POINT PARK
Eagle Point Park opened after a citizen's committee worked to purchase land that was deeded to the city for the development of a park.
1846
Iowa became a state 13 years after the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty.
1919
A flood wiped out much of Union Park, a recreational area that gained national attention since its opening in 1891. Over the years, it featured a bowling alley, theater, dance halls, and more. While they rebuilt following the flood's devastation, the park eventually faded in popularity and closed. Today, you can see building remains while ziplining over the area at Sky Tours Zipline.
The first permanent European settler in the area was a FrenchCanadian fur trader named Julien Dubuque.
1833
Under the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty in 1833, the United States Government opened the area for settlement.

The Mississippi River is the world’s fourth longest river and makes its way through Dubuque’s front yard. With a rich culture tied to the waterway, it is common to see riverboats making their way up and down the river even today.
The name Mississippi comes from the Anishinaabe people who called the river ‘Misi-ziibi,’ which means ‘great river’.
THE Great #WHEREIOWASTARTED
Mississippi Riverwalk VIEWS
The area’s heritage is intertwined with the river, and its influence is everywhere, from the landscape carved by the waterway to the industries that thrived along it.
While initially known for its fur trading and lead mining, settlers eventually brought new businesses to the area, such as button making, boat construction and millworking. At the turn of the century, Dubuque's Millwork District was booming.
Today, you can explore some of that history with a 19th-century belt-driven machine shop that once created motors for racing boats on the Mississippi. The Iowa Marine Engine & Launch Works is a 3,000-square-foot exhibit at the National Mississippi River
Museum & Aquarium that provides hands-on learning for kids and adults alike.
What else can you see at this Smithsonian-affiliated museum? A variety of wildlife that calls the mighty Mississippi home! While you'll find river otters, an alligator, turtles, fish, stingrays, and more, the river is home to 260 species of fish, 326 species of birds (including the American Bald Eagle and the Great Blue Heron), 145 species of amphibians, and 50 species of mammals.
The Mississippi River is 2,530 miles long from its source at Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.
From its source in northern Minnesota to the gulf, the Mississippi River drops 1,475 feet.
It takes a raindrop 90 days to travel the length of the river.
25% of all North American fish species live in the river.
60% of all North American birds use the river basin as their migratory flyway.
The Mississippi and Missouri Rivers combine to form the longest river system in the U.S. and North America. It is also the fourth longest in the world.

Market
Since 1845, Dubuque has had an affinity for markets. (Being home to Iowa's longest-running Farmers' Market will do that to a community.) With a market happening each week, they are the perfect addition to your next visit.
IOWA'S OLDEST MARKETDUBUQUE FARMERS' MARKET
In 1845 the first farmers' market was held in Dubuque. The idea of a market was believed to have been brought to the area by settlers from Philadelphia. Fast forward to 1858, farmers were backing their wagons up to the 11' tall windows of a newly built City Hall where they could unload the produce inside stalls. Slowly the market grew to span city blocks and eventually added artisans to the mix of vendors on-site. Today, you can still see the mix of food and art on display, with a rotation of over 120 vendors participating.
+ THE DETAILS: Saturdays from 7 am - 12 pm May through October (*market opens at 8am during the month of October)
+ WHAT YOU'LL SEE: Produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, confections, homemade pasta and sauces, cheeses, honey, herbs, flowers, arts, crafts, live music, food trucks, and more.
+ WHAT TO KNOW: You can start planning your market visit with our Farmers' Market Bucket List on traveldubuque.com/farmersmarket
NIGHT MARKET
Not an early riser? Then Millwork Night Market is the place for you. Taking place under the evening sky in the Historic Millwork District, you'll find local food, art, drinks, and unique goods. Surrounded by brick buildings, this market's atmosphere is made for those looking to connect with local farmers while enjoying a nightlife experience. With a rotating lineup of musicians and vendors, this market should be added to your list.
+ THE DETAILS: The second Thursday of the month May - October.
+ WHAT YOU'LL SEE: Artists, crafters, growers, producers, processors, on-site food, drinks, and live music.
+ WHAT TO KNOW: While some vendors accept cards, it's wise to bring cash along. Also, beer and wine are for sale starting at 5 pm with alcohol sales ending 15 minutes before market closing.
FARMERS' MARKET
Just because colder weather comes to Dubuque during the winter months doesn't mean market fun stops. That's when Winter Farmers' Market kicks off! Located at Kennedy Mall in the West Concourse, this market has been a tradition since 2007. In-season produce, locally raised meats, canned goods, and more are available as you get your market fix indoors.
+ THE DETAILS: Saturday from 9 am - 12 pm November through April.
+ WHAT YOU'LL SEE: Produce, meats, honey, canned goods, hot food, and more.
+ WHAT TO KNOW: A market recycling program is offered where glass jars, plastic containers, and egg cartons are available for reuse. Most vendors accept cards but it's always safe to bring along cash.
Typically taking place in early December, the Merry Millwork Market features local artisans specializing in handmade and homegrown goods. Taking place outdoors in the Historic Millwork District, you can expect to see holiday cheer, lighted trees, and maybe even an appearance from the big guy in red.
+ THE DETAILS: Early December
+ WHAT YOU'LL SEE: Tree lighting, Santa, carolers, food, drinks, handmade and homegrown gifts.
+ WHAT TO KNOW: The tree lighting and Santa appearances take place at a specific time, so check the event out for more details.

MID WEST CLUBS Supper
Supper clubs are a real Midwest treat meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Snack on a relish tray or salad bar, sip on an Old Fashioned or two, and get ready for a laid-back meal with good company and good food. Here are a few reasons you should add them to your Dubuque itinerary.
It’s a time to unwind.
Supper clubs aren't fussy. It's all about the experience and the company you have with you. Conversations are meant to be had while making trips to the salad bar, snacking on dips, and waiting for that tasty entree to make its way to the table. Stretch the evening out by ordering a nightcap or dessert drink - you won't regret it!
The nostalgia.
With dim lighting, wood paneling, and maybe even some patterned wallpaper, supper clubs take things back to a time when things were a little simpler.
Relish trays & salad bars.
Olives, eggs, veggies, meats, and a good ol’ cheese spread are just some of the things you might find on a supper club relish tray. Venture to the salad bar and you’ll find all the fixins for a salad along with a variety of goodies like macaroni salad, coleslaw, and maybe even a Jell-O concoction or two.
Entrees for days.
Prime rib? Check. Mouthwatering steaks? You betcha. Fish fry? Of course. These entrees don’t disappoint and are often accompanied with words like “if you go there you gotta try the…”
Ice cream drinks.
Pink Squirrels and Grasshoppers are the best way to end a night at a supper club. These drinkable desserts are made with liqueur and ice cream, but if you are traveling with little ones –these can often be made kid friendly.
