Known as the “Key City” to Irish and German immigrants who saw it as a gateway to the west, Dubuque is Iowa’s oldest city. It rests upon scenic bluffs overlooking the Mississippi with an abundance of natural resources. When its first permanent settler, Julien Dubuque, arrived in 1785 he established a close relationship with the Mesquakie Indian Tribe that lead to a growing trade market which attracted more settlers. After being chartered in 1837, industry in Dubuque grew rapidly. Initially known for fur trading and lead mining, settlers brought new business such as button making, boat construction, and mill working.
NOW 2000-2010 With a vision from area leaders, in the late 1990’s the America’s River Project was created. This project was developed with the goal of redeveloping Dubuque’s Riverfront. The project started out with a goal of raising $25 million. That $25 million grew into what today is a $400 million riverfront redevelopment that includes a state of the art convention center, upscale attractions, a riverfront that gleams and glistens and expanded businesses. This project expanded other areas of the community to grow as well. From a bustling downtown district to growth in new and existing businesses and retail outlets on our Westend, the community continues to better itself with each year that passes. Convention Services The Dubuque Convention & Visitors Bureau is happy to offer your convention or meeting a variety of services that assist in planning for your conference. Listed below are many of the benefits we can provide to help assure a successful event in the Dubuque area. Description of Service
We will supply you with a listing of area convention facilities, lodging properties, attractions and other area providers for your event. These properties will submit bids to the CVB for your convention and we will compile them in a bid book to submit to you.
We are happy to arrange for site visits to the properties you are interested in hosting your convention or meeting at. We are also happy to offer a complimentary site visit of the entire community.
We can provide you with a complimentary Dubuque DVD.
The CVB offers complimentary promotional material to help showcase the Dubuque region to your event attendees.
The CVB will assist in planning spousal programs, area speaker referrals and options for group outings, dining and entertainment as needed.
The CVB is happy to send out a Press Release regarding your convention in our community or we are happy to provide you with a listing of local and regional media contacts.
Assistance with arrangements for any transportation your group may need while in the Dubuque area can be provided by the Dubuque Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Welcome Address Assistance
The Dubuque Convention & Visitors Bureau will be glad to plan for local dignitaries to provide a welcome address to your group.
Mailing Assistance
We would be happy to assist with your mailing costs when informing your members about the meeting or conference in Dubuque.
We are happy to provide your group with name badges with your delegate listing with a 2 week notice.
With 2 weeks notice, the CVB will provide your group with Welcome Bags that are filled with local brochures, maps and a value card specifically for convention and meeting delegates filled with special discounts to local establishments.

University of Dubuque’s Anchor
The Dubuque area is the ideal location to plan a military reunion. The area offers affordable lodging, excellent camping facilities, unique settings and is rich in its commemoration of those who have served our country. To assist in planning your commemorative service, parade or color guard, please contact the Dubuque County Veteran Affairs office at 566.589.7840.
Dubuque is home to an anchor from the USS Texas. It is a Danforth anchor – 11 feet tall and spanning 10 fee. The anchor was a gift to the University of Dubuque from alumni who participated in the U.S. Navy’s V-12 program during World War II. The anchor commemorates the navy’s V-12 program which provided officer training while students finished their educations.
“Battle Bows” at Marshall Park This is the title of a beautiful Memorial that is located at Marshall Park in Dubuque, IA. It is a Tri-State tribute to all who have served in the Armed Forces. It is also a tribute to the people of Dubuque who have made the structure possible. Within the reflecting arched bow, the battle ribbons are worn on tunics or other clothing by armed services personnel appear. These are presented in porcelain enamel on the inside surfaces of the three outside arches.
Chaplin Schmitt Memorial Father Aloysius Schmitt of Dubuque, IA, served as chaplain to the USS Oklahoma. The first chaplain to die in World War II, Father Schmitt perished while heroically attempting to save others following the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. His death occurred on the sixth anniversary of his ordination. Father Schmitt was honored in 1968 when a harbor in Dubuque was named in his honor and a monument shaped like a ship’s wheel sinking beneath the waves was placed on the riverbank in 1973.
University of Dubuque’s Vietnam War Memorial At the University of Dubuque’s 1994 Homecoming, an alumni funded memorial honoring four classmates was dedicated. The black granite monument commemorates the giving of their lives during the Vietnam War.
Veterans Memorial Plaza Located on Chaplain Schmitt Island, this memorial gives visitors a feeling of tranquility, honor and respect for our nation’s veterans. It includes a curved wall to the back dedicated to the branches of service, with their flags flying, bracketing an American flag with a POW/MIA banner below it. In the center, there is a 6 ton granite globe, 5 feet in diameter. The array sits on a field of bricks, each sold to raise money for this project. Learn more at www.vetsmemorialplaza.com.
Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Memorial Dedicated on July 9, 1995, the monument bears the names of 63 individuals from Tri-State counties who gave their lives in service to their country in Vietnam. The three stones that are in the shape of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin face the state they represent.
