COVER HISTORIC SHOT TOWER

DID YOU KNOW THAT DUBUQUE IS THE OLDEST CITY IN IOWA? Dubuque was founded in 1833 by Julien Dubuque. He became friends with the Meskwaki Indians who lived here at the time. So, that means our city is like the big brother to all of the other towns in Iowa. Cool, huh? Let’s learn more about Dubuque! Explore Where Iowa Started:

MESKWAKI: The Sac & Fox Native American Indian Tribe. Their name means, ‘Red Earth People’. They were the original settlers of this area when Julien Dubuque began exploring. HISTORIC SHOT TOWER: The tower was built in 1856 and melted lead at the top where it cooled and tumbled down into water at the bottom to create lead shot!

EXERCISE CREATIVITY START EXPLORING! Dubuque is full of places that let you discover and play. Creative Adventure Lab is filled with fun for kids of all ages, including a rock-climbing wall, Legos, light wall, pottery painting, and more! Want to start climbing? You can try to reach Level 1 height with your regular admission. Want to go higher? Let them know and they’ll get you a special ticket and harness to keep climbing. Speaking of rock walls, did you know that Dubuque is surrounded by limestone bluffs? Limestone is a type of rock that is found all over this area. When glaciers moved across the state years and years ago, they missed this part of Iowa which is why our landscape isn’t as flat as other places in the state. Thanks, Ice Age!

Let’s Play:

FIND YOUR WAY. Can you find your way from the start to the end of the maze without running into any bumps along the way?

THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IS THE FOURTHLONGEST RIVER IN THE WORLD! It is also home to river life below and around the water. The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium lets you meet many of the creatures that call this area home as well as the critters that live along the length of the Mississippi. From the headwaters in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana, the river is 2,318 miles in length, that’s almost 35,000 football fields long!

What does that mean?:

HEADWATERS: Where a river or stream starts. GULF: An ocean basin or pool.

THE WORLD’S SHORTEST, STEEPEST, RAILWAY. The Fenelon Place Elevator was built in 1882 - that’s almost 150 years ago! Mr. J. K. Graves lived at the top of the bluff and wanted to get to the bottom quickly without having to drive his horse and buggy. So, he built the elevator as a way to get up and down the hill! Today, you can still ride up this funicular and see views of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois as well as a sweet little Elf who calls the Elevator home.

Let’s Play:

DOT GAME: The goal of this game is to make more squares than your opponent! Play by connecting two dots with a line. When you place the last 'wall' of a single square, the box is yours and you get 1 point. (Mark the box with your initials to keep score.) Players have to take turns making their moves. When a player completes a box, they get another turn. The game is over when no one can make a box. The player at the end with the most points wins!

What does this mean?

FUNICULAR: A funicular is a form of cable railway which connects points along a rail laid on a steep hill. The two cars move together - as one goes up, the other comes down.

JUST OUTSIDE OF DUBUQUE IS DYERSVILLE. This town has a lot of fun things for you to see including the National Farm Toy Museum where you can view collections of toy tractors and learn about farming with these small scale models! While in town, visit the famous Field of Dreams Movie Site. Bring your glove or bat and play some ball...you might also see players appear in the cornfield behind the diamond! For a fun walk or bike ride in Mother Nature, visit the Heritage Trail. Once an old railroad route, you can see bluffs, rivers, valleys and more! CAN YOU FIND THESE OBJECTS?
