COVER STORY
Down an ordinary road in the middle of Small Town USA, an unassuming barn holds an extraordinary treasure within its walls. Walking into the barn, two visitors are instantly overwhelmed by the sheer size of this fascinating object, especially when they learn that it started out as an ordinary baseball. What began as a fun project between Mike Carmichael and his then 3-yearold son has grown to a massive 8,200 pounds, with a 16-foot, 9-inch circumference bearing just under 28,000 layers of paint.
Famous people like Bill Gaither and the Oak Ridge Boys have painted the ball. The Oak Ridge Boys even sang “Elvira” in front of it. It’s also been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS Good Morning.

It has taken 45 years to get to this point. The World’s Largest Ball of Paint has held the Guinness World’s Record since 2005, and the sphere has drawn visitors from all 50 states and 50 countries, including Japan, Kenya, and Switzerland. But the most amazing part of this remarkable object is that its owner, Mike Carmichael, lets his visitors participate in the fun. “They get to paint part of the ball, write their names in a book, and I give them a certificate that says ‘I painted the World’s Largest Ball of Paint,’” said Mike, a long-time Alexandria resident. Famous people like Bill Gaither and the Oak Ridge Boys have painted the ball. The Oak Ridge Boys even sang “Elvira” in front of it. It’s also been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS Good Morning. If you’re planning to visit, please call 765-724-4088 to make an appointment during normal business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There’s no admission fee, but donations are welcome. A few counties over in Richmond, you’ll find another unique sight: the only

Ta’an (the female mummy) dates back 300 years before Christ, about the time of Cleopatra and Marc Antony, and is located on the Earlham College campus at Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History. “In 1889, Ta’an was legally purchased from the Egyptian government by Joseph Moore and taken to Earlham College,” said Nancy Sartain, leisure marketing director at the Richmond-Wayne County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “She was a young woman in her early 20s.” The male mummy, Menkaef, was purchased in 1929 in an Egyptian shop by

Or if camping isn’t quite your thing, check into the Tortuga Inn Bed and Breakfast which is still located on the riverbank. It’s named one of the top 5 most biologically important rivers in North America, based on the cleanliness of its water. Let the kiddos run off that last bit of energy at the Winamac Town Park. It’s surrounded on 3 sides by the river and has an awesome playground that features a “swinging bridge” called the Memorial Suspension Bridge.

Farewell to Winter, Spring Ahead… During the long winter months, you may grow weary of being inside most of the time. But late winter melts into early spring right before our eyes! If you open your eyes to possibilities, there are many ways to enjoy the cooler weather, while anticipating the arrival of warmer days, emerging flowers and outside fun. Here are a few ideas of how you can make this transitional time a blast of fresh air and fantastic fun.
A Straightforward Guide for Manly Fun… O.K., guys, pack-up your golf clubs, bring your fishing gear, or brave a motorcycle ride to White County and let the adventures begin. When the weather breaks in March, be ready with your golf clubs to hit the greens. Located on Lake Shafer, the Tippecanoe Country Club has been in existence since the 1920’s. In the 1960s, the course was renovated and converted to an 18-hole course by Indiana golf course designer, the legendary Pete Dye. Located on-site are a golf pro shop, a bar, and an event venue. Also, in Monticello, Pine View Golf Course and Pro Shop is a family course. Founded in 1985, the course is challenging, perfect for the long ball hitter, although playable for those of any skill level. Fun is the name of the game at Pine View. Year-round, Lakes Shafer and Freeman are a fisherman’s paradise. Find the gear you need at Ace Hardware, Rural King or Twin Lakes Fish & Game. Check out www.enjoywhitecounty for details on public boat access. The lakes are home to walleye, channel catfish, white bass, and white crappie, to name a few. Did you know Indiana’s premier motorcycle magazine is headquartered in White County? Thunder Roads, a magazine with events and articles that pertain to Indiana riders, is owned by Rudy and Selina Vargus. The couple also own Whiskey & Wine Saloon in Monticello, where there is amazing food and fantastic fun! Check out the events and helmet-up! 32

The Girl’s Guide to Exploring… White County invites you to Wolcott where Timeless Treasures features an array of antiques, clothing and home décor. Country Tan N’ Things offers eclectic home decor and knick-knacks. And, yes, there are tanning options! A new addition in Wolcott is quaint Rustic Rose which is founded on three components…Reclaim-RestoreRepurpose. Their home décor selection will inspire you to redesign your home or office. Enjoy a lunch break at Roots, a family owned farm-to-table restaurant. The beef and pork on the menu are raised on the Furrer family farm and are worthy choices to delight your taste buds!

Make Your Next Getaway an
Indiana Treasure Hunt story by GLENDA WINDERS
Shopping for antiques and vintage items just never gets old. Whether you’re feathering your nest with vintage furniture, shopping for a gift or hoping to make an unexpected find, time spent in antique shops is always a pleasure. Even if you’re not a traditional “antique hunter” you can make an adventure out of visiting Indiana’s many treasure-crammed shops and antique malls, several housing many vendors under one roof. They all have a lot in common, but each has its own personality. A good place to begin is Antique Alley in Wayne County, who counts its area in miles–66–instead of square feet. Enthusiasts can drive along a loop trail from Richmond to Knightstown on scenic U.S. Highway 40 and back to Richmond along state Route 38, visiting more than 800 antique shops along the way. Known as Indiana’s most diverse antiquing destination, it includes an eclectic collection of malls and shops, including its newest member, Winning Streak Antiques, featuring toys, advertising and “mantiques” for the gentlemen in your party. The trail’s hub, historic Cambridge City, has ten antique shops within a three-block area, including Log House Antiques, located in an 1830’s log cabin with a choice selection of antiques, fine Indiana art, hobby horses and quilts. Enjoy a thrill of nostalgia in the kind of vintage downtown you don’t much see anymore: warm brick buildings dating to the turn of the last century, specialty shops offering the unusual to the discerning, cafes serving casual fine as well as comfort food, and a park as charming as it is old where generations have pulled up a bench to sit a spell. All within easy walking distance, with no shortage of convenient parking. Time has been kind to Chesterton, its memory is long, and the bygone seems almost near enough to touch. Perhaps that’s why it’s a grand place to go antiquing. ISO Unique, Yesterday’s Treasures, Three Wicked Apples,

“PICKING” INDIANA
DESTINATION
It’s the people, picking, and automotive history that draw American Pickers’ Robbie Wolfe to Indiana
story by GLENDA WINDERS
Before Robbie Wolfe joined his brother, Mike, on the popular television show “American Pickers” he owned a landscaping company for 32 years. Now, with his five children raised and the business behind him, he is free to pursue his favorite pastime — collecting. His passions are vintage cars and advertising memorabilia from the gas and oil industries. He houses his finds in a refurbished 12,000-square-foot former body shop that was built in 1939 in a historic part of Davenport, Iowa. On most days, however, you’ll find him in his Ford F350 pickup pulling a 38-foot trailer, typically traveling 50,000 and 70,000 miles per year. In 2021 alone he figures the distance he traveled would wrap around the globe 2.6 times. He drives from Florida to Alaska, Connecticut to California, and one of his favorite places to stop is Indiana.
“One of the things I love so much about Indiana is that the state once had more than 32 car manufacturers at one time,” he said. “And we’re not talking just about regular cars. We’re talking about the history of cars — from Studebaker to Marmon to Stutz and Cole. These guys set a precedent across the United States. Ford was chasing them and trying to keep up with them. Indiana also has the most famous race in the world.” On a recent trip to Auburn, in northern Indiana, he toured the National Automotive and Truck Museum, which made a big impression on him because

of its after-school program that teaches children how to rebuild antique cars. It’s important, he believes, that talents and skills such as these, along with the history of the cars, are related to children as older generations pass. “If I can pull a kid into my collection and intrigue him, I’m all over that,” he said. “Maybe that’s what gets him to think about history and start collecting.” He said what keeps bringing him back to Indiana, however, are the people. “I can’t say enough good things about them,” he said. “In the antiquing field they are probably some of the nicest I’ve ever met. They welcome you with open arms, and they are more than happy to tell you the history of what they have. When I’m here I’m searching for automotive history because those cars are still out there in barns.”
Robbie’s “picking” takes him all over the United States. PHOTO: Robbie Wolfe
His future also looks to bring him and his wife, Melanie, for frequent visits to the state he likes so much. One of his daughters will be attending a university in Indiana next fall and playing on the soccer team. He said he is an involved dad who has tried never to miss his children’s events. Perhaps his most treasured find in the state has been a midget car built on a Knucklehead motorcycle engine that had raced in California in the 1930s. It would

have been a proud showpiece in his shop, he said, but he realized it needed to be seen by a wider audience, so today it’s in a Utah museum. Admittedly not a good student and with no interest in going to college, Wolfe said antiquing has inspired him to study and learn, and now he’s on a mission to capture the history of what he collects and how it was made. “One thing about the show and my work in general is that sometimes it’s about resurrecting the pieces that we find and then connecting the dots back to where they actually belong,” he said. “The stories intrigue me.” In seasons to come Wolfe will be taking a bigger role on “American Pickers.” And as much as he loves being on the road and collecting, he’ll also be

Out-of-the-ordinary in

Wabash County

If you’re in search of some out-of-theordinary attractions for your upcoming staycation, look no further than the winding roads of Wabash County. From the look of its quaint downtown area, visitors would never guess that the charming city of Wabash was once terrorized in 1942 by a 1900-pound runaway elephant named Modoc. As the legendary story goes, The Great American Circus was in the middle of a show when Modoc was frightened by some barking dogs and broke loose from her tethers. She bolted into town, hot on the scent of roasting peanuts wafting from Bradley Brothers Drugstore (which is now the site of Modoc’s Market & Espresso Bar). After breaking through the drugstore door, knocking over the peanut roaster, and devouring the peanuts, she continued to evade capture for the next five days. The memory of Modoc the elephant lives on at Modoc’s Market & Espresso Bar in downtown Wabash, where visitors can sample local baked goods and try a latte with peanut butter syrup in memory of Modoc. After your coffee has settled, hop aboard Trolley No. 85 to see a unique view of Wabash. Ongoing trolley tours feature themes like eagle watching, historic homes, a greenhouse tour, and even a St. Patrick’s Day themed adventure. The 34-passenger trolley can also be rented for wedding parties, corporate events, and private tours. Visit www. visitwabashcounty.com/trolley-tours for more information. Two unique lodging options await travelers who are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary place to stay. Salamonie Bridle Stalls and Carriage House is a full-service horse boarding facility with a completely remodeled antique barn that includes lodging. Visitors can board their horses while they stay overnight in the Carriage House. Just a few blocks from historic downtown Wabash, The Sanctuary is a renovated 1903 Gothic-style church turned overnight event hub. 60

Whether you’re searching for an intimate wedding venue, a corporate event, or a boutique style hotel experience, you’ll find it at The Sanctuary. “Because nothing is more than 20 minutes away, our lodging options are close to ample landmarks and activities throughout the county,” explained Whitney Millspaugh, marketing manager for Visit Wabash County. A must-stop for booklovers is Reading Room Books, Indiana’s largest used bookstore specializing in rare and unique finds. The store features three rooms full of a well-curated collection of books. You’ll also find classics, full sets, and out-of-print treasures on the shelves. Open seasonally from May through
September, the historic 13-24 Drive In Theater boasts one of the largest screens in Indiana. The 70-year-old theater is known for its Retro Reels nights on Thursdays, where for $8 a carload, visitors can see classic movies while they munch on popcorn from the original retro concession stand. “If you are wanting to explore a unique destination where the people truly care, Wabash County is it. Taking a break from day-to-day life is necessary to refresh and regroup,” said Millspaugh. “From the beautiful downtown in Wabash that boasts charm to our expansive state parks with copious trails and wildlife, there is something for everyone, whether you’re traveling with your family, partner, or exploring solo.”

story by ELIZABETH GRANGER
Something old, something new … and sometimes, totally unexpected. Indiana sites provide oodles of options for the perfect destination for the perfect wedding day.
An authentic “working farm” wedding experience at Fair Oaks Farms includes a variety of settings, including an idyllic waterfall. PHOTO: Fair Oaks Farms
It was not the lure of vintage cars that led Rachelle Reinking to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum in Auburn for her wedding site. It was the grand staircase. Her husband, Daniel Church, suggested they visit the museum for a look-see. It has the element of history, which they both like. And he’d attended automobile festivals over the years. “He can appreciate the vehicles more than I can,” Reinking says. So she was not particularly impressed – until she saw that staircase. “It’s a cool
version of walking down the aisle,” she says. And that was that. The auto museum is a definite destination for thousands of travelers who do want to see the cars. So when friends learned they could combine the wedding and the cars, they were sold on attending. That’s often the way it goes with destination weddings. Essentially, a site that’s meaningful for the bride and groom, away from their home towns, with guests hopping on board with the bonus of visiting the destination. It’s quite a draw.
Stats tell us that up to 25 percent of today’s couples choose destination weddings. As for cars, Indiana also offers the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Museums of all kinds are possibilities, each with its own applicable setting. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has floor upon floor of enticements. “Access to the exhibit areas is really what makes us a unique venue,” says Kimberly traveliN travel iN Staycation 2022

Harms Robinson, director of PR and media relations. ”So many couples love the added fun and memories the galleries bring. They will never forget where they got to ride a carousel or pose by real dinosaur fossils.” In Elkhart, couples can host their big day at the Northern Indiana Event Center, located adjacent to the unique RV/Hall of Fame Museum. The Indiana History Center in Indianapolis has not only that magnificent staircase inside but also the Central Canal outside. Conner Prairie in Fishers attracts Hoosier history buffs with a variety of sites. Also see the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis and its State Historic Sites that include the T.C. Steele site in Nashville, Whitewater Canal in Metamora and Angel Mounds in Evansville. And in Carroll County there’s the historic Delphi Opera House. Stately historic homes often come with expansive grounds. Check out Ruthmere in Elkhart, The Inn at Irwin Gardens 68

They can dance away the evening in the ballroom, event field, or, during apple season, in the apple orchard. Guests can savor a meal catered by their farm-tofork restaurant, and spend the night in the on-site Marriott, which also features an elegant bridal suite. As for the choice of a wedding date, Jordan Richart, PR manager for the Jackson County Visitor Center, says, “I know some people who have moved away from here but came back to have their wedding and planned it around some of our festivals. Kind of a neat thing.” The bottom line? The sky’s the limit in wedding venues. Ask around. And in the end, emotions do trump physical surroundings. Karen Robbins, owner of Avon Gardens in Avon, says, “Talking about how brides feel is better than the facts. I wish I could capture their happiness and love in a bottle. Winter is a Great Time to Visit the Indianapolis Zoo story by INDIANAPOLIS ZOO STAFF

When winter weather settles into Indiana, there’s still lots of opportunities to get outdoors and explore at the Indianapolis Zoo. 80

Many of the animals are perfectly at home in these colder temperatures. Species like the Arctic fox, Amur tiger, Alaskan brown bear, California sea lion and others are native to colder climates, so our furry friends are well adapted to handle the cold and snow. Arctic foxes are covered in thick, snowy-white fur during seasons when temperatures are low. They also have a big bushy tail, much like red pandas, that they can wrap around their bodies for extra warmth. The pools in the new exhibit, Alligators & Crocodiles: The Fight to Survive, are
all temperature regulated to help keep these cold-blooded animals cozy during the colder months of the year. And while they are native to warmer climates, American alligators are still well adapted for winter. When the temperatures begin dropping, so do these reptiles … into the depths of the water where they can remain submerged, only poking their snouts above the surface to breathe. In the cold, their body functions slow down and they stay still to save energy needed for warmth. Several other exhibits are equipped with features that help keep animals

A
tradition that began more than 80 years ago is still going strong at Pokagon State Park in Angola. The track was refrigerated in 1971 and no longer needs snow to operate. Prior to the refrigeration, the tracks were kept cold with ice blocks cut from nearby Lake James that were shaved to fit within the track. Today, if temperatures drop below zero, park personnel may close the slide, but even on 50 degree winter days, visitors can enjoy the nearly 40-mph ride. A new adjacent warming center was built in 1986 while the slide was completely remodeled. The record speed on the quarter-mile track is 42 mph and each ride takes approximately 30 seconds. Toboggans rent for $20 per hour and hold up to four people. The toboggan is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through the last full weekend in February (Hours and cost are subject to change). There are several new toboggan restrictions in place. Also, the pools in the marine mammal exhibits are temperature regulated for the animals’ comfort. Most people probably wouldn’t think of flamingos as “winter animals,” but they are perfectly well suited to colder weather. They’ll be outdoors for most of the winter. The cold temperatures are not the only concerns in the winter months. Slick conditions are also on the forefront of the zoo staff. To keep animals safe, they drain many of the water features in the animal habitats; if the exhibit conditions are too slick, they’ll keep the animals safe and warm indoors. Maurice, nicknamed “Mo,” is a male great-horned owl who came from the Tampa Lowry Park Zoo after he too was rescued as a juvenile. Named for the two prominent tufts of feathers on their heads, great-horned owls are adept nocturnal hunters that use their incredible eyesight, near-silent flying, and excellent hearing to sneak up on prey in the dark of night. While we really don’t need a holiday to celebrate our favorite foods, we can use it as an excuse to overindulge in some of our favorite culinary delights. February boasts several calendarworthy celebrations—February 2 is National Tater Tot Day, February 9 is National Pizza Day, February 24 is National Tortilla Chip Day—but the most universally-recognized foodie holiday in February is, of course, Valentine’s Day, when nearly 58 million pounds of chocolate will be sold throughout the country. So, in the spirit of this upcoming holiday, we’re going to highlight the Indiana Foodways Alliance “Sweet Temptations Trail,” one of 21 trails throughout Indiana sanctioned by this non-profit group of tourism and culinary professionals who serve to promote Indiana’s authentic food culture. The Sweet Temptations Trail has nearly 40 stops throughout the state, and includes bakeries, donut shops, eateries that serve great desserts, and confectioneries who make some of the best chocolates found in the United States. One of those is Schimpff’s Confectionery in Jeffersonville which is one of the oldest, continuously operated family-owned candy businesses in the country. Originally seating a little over 100 people, within ten years Arni’s at Market Square was one of the largest restaurants in Indiana. The company is now owned by Arni’s two sons, Brad and Kurt Cohen. Located in Columbus, Indiana, and one of the country’s most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Dan Kiley. Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1952, Miller House and Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. The house expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with
an open and flowing layout, flat roof and vast stone and glass walls. The rooms, configured beneath a grid pattern of skylights supported by cruciform steel columns, are filled with strong colors and playful patterns. Amid the residence’s large geometric gardens, its grandest feature is an allée of honey locust trees that runs along the west side of the house. Columbus, Indiana, is ranked sixth in the nation by the American Institute of Architects for architectural innovation and design. National Geographic Traveler ranked Columbus as America’s most significant historic place on the strength of its architectural heritage. As a way to attract outstanding architectural talent

to design public facilities in the central Indiana community of Columbus, Miller created the Architecture Design Program within The Cummins Foundation. For more information visit columbus.in.us
