A Message from the Office of Indiana Tourism Development: We are in this together.
Telling the Stories of Authentic Indiana
If you’re holding this issue of Travel Indiana magazine, it means that travel bans in Indiana have most likely been lifted, and that our travel and hospitality industry can begin to rebound. Once we get through this crisis, we urge you to support local businesses, restaurants, attractions, and destinations like never before. We want to remind you that due to production timing of this issue, some of the events listed may have been cancelled or rescheduled. Please call and check websites before attending. For this issue’s “Editor’s Letter” we are giving this space to the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, a group that works tirelessly to promote tourism throughout the state. We hope you find their words inspiring.
Stephanie Nicol, Editor
This is an unprecedented time in history. There is confusion, sadness and uncertainty. But know this, the Indiana Office of Tourism Development stands by all our Hoosiers. We are in this together. We know there are significant implications for the travel and tourism industry. One in ten Americans is employed because of tourism dollars. In these challenging and uncertain times, our strength comes from how we work Lieutenant Governor together and navigate these issues collectively. Suzanne Crouch Our primary focus continues to be the wellbeing of our communities, destinations and attractions. We ask you to think about our travel and hospitality workers in this ever-changing situation. We encourage you to find creative ways to show your support by shopping local when appropriate. Indiana Tourism is in regular communication with Governor Holcomb’s office and the Indiana State Department of Health. Both are closely Misty Weisensteiner monitoring and receiving real-time information. While the situation is rapidly evolving, we want to support you and be a resource for you. We want to thank our healthcare providers and caregivers. We also want to thank all of the first responders, public service workers, truck drivers, restaurant and delivery drivers, grocery store workers and ALL of you continuing to work in this challenging time. You are the heroes, and for that, we are deeply thankful. When this health crisis subsides, we will be here for you and will do all that we can to support you in your efforts, so we keep Indiana as a destination on everyone’s list. The tourism and hospitality industry is resilient. We are in this together.

Troyer says she’s intrigued by the Hell’s Point Challenge at Pokagon. “I have texted the girls to see who might be joining me in that 8-mile challenge.” It’s a hiking route that links trails at Pokagon, typically taking three to four hours to complete. Hell’s Point is the highest point in the park; the top is reached by climbing 84 wooden steps. There are prizes for

Bucket List Item: Toboggan run at Pokagon State Park. “Done,” says Amy Troyer of Fishers as she zips through her cell phone photos. “I’d thought about it for years and years; I finally went.” The popular refrigerated toboggan run, with 90,000 riders each season, was born in 1935 when the Civilian Conservation Corps built a wooden run for their own fun. It became refrigerated in 1971. “It was fun,” says Troyer, who went with a couple girlfriends in January. “But it is not for everyone. It is physically challenging. Not a leisurely stroll along a paved trail but one that throws a few challenges at her, especially if it involves an incline. The 3 Dunes Challenge in the Indiana Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan takes participants on a 1.5-mile hiking trail. “This hike is the toughest in the park with 552 vertical feet to climb, but with breathtaking views at the top of each dune,” says Michelle Senderhauf, communications director of Indiana Dunes Tourism in Porter. Firsttime visitors to the Dunes are often surprised how difficult it can be to just walk in the sand. The annual Indiana Dunes Outdoor Adventure Festival in early October offers more than 70 events that showcase the region’s outdoor adventures. They include hiking, biking, paddling, geo-caching, photography, birding, and yoga. An unusual Lake Michigan option is the WhoaZone water sports park, a summertime floating playground in Whiting. It’s a one-acre inflatable water challenge course with slides, tunnels, towers, bridges and jumping platforms for children at least seven and adults who can swim. In other

Visitors can experience even more water adventures by renting paddleboards, kayaks, paddleboats, and waverunners at East Chicago Marina. Feeling adventurous? Park, along Riverfront Fort Wayne, offers kayaking and paddle boarding as well as a treetop canopy trail with a slide into a playground. Weekend whitewater rafting on the East Race Waterway in downtown South Bend has been popular for more than 30 years. Far calmer are the options at White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis; it has pedal boats and kayaks on the canal. At Patoka Lake, near French Lick, adventure-seekers will find plenty of fishing, boating, and hiking. Boat rentals are available, as are floating cabins–the only accommodations of its kind in the state. Indiana Caverns near Corydon offers underground kayaking as well as “strenuous” cave tours which require climbing a rope ladder. A zip coaster called the Bat Chaser has a free-fall drop option outdoors. Riders start 50 feet above a sinkhole plain, attached to a steel rail by a harness/ seat, and soar past the tree tops to the end.It is curved steel like a coaster but suspended by harness like a zipline. Other possibilities on the Indiana Cave Trail include easier walking tours as well as boat tours and gemstone mining. Above ground experiences include skydiving in Franklin, Frankfort, Logansport and Michigan City. In Franklin, you’ll find Explore Freefall, a branch of Jerry’s Skydiving Circus which has been in business 40 years. Alan Trisler, videographer and “Accelerated Freefall” instructor at Explore Freefall, says skydiving is for every range of personality. “It’s certainly a ‘type A’ activity, but we get all types of people,” Alan says. “Some come

Have you ever wanted to glide through the sky on a sailplane? Open April through October, Soar Indy in Alexandria is the largest soaring operation in Indiana, and offers introductory flights for those wanting to give it a try. Also called gliders, sailplanes are an “unpowered” aircraft that use naturally occurring currents of rising air in the atmosphere to gain altitude. Usually, an airplane tows the glider aloft, then the pilot releases the towline and begins to glide. Not sure you want an airborne adventure? There’s plenty of thrillseeking options to do on the ground. At White River Paintball in

Turkey Run’s Five-Mile Challenge.
Tall sand dunes, large hills, tight areas, and fast flowing riverbeds. If those features sound appealing, you may want to tackle the hiking challenges available at five Indiana state parks. Each tests hikers with
some of the most demanding terrain Indiana’s state parks have. Your rewards will be spectacular views, a sense of accomplishment, and a sticker from each challenge you complete. Turkey Run State Park’s Five Mile Challenge encompasses much of what makes the park one
of Indiana’s most visited. The test begins at the Turkey Run Nature Center and crosses the suspension bridge into Rocky Hollow. The trail then goes through Falls Canyon Nature Preserve, the Camel’s Back, the Punch Bowl, a coal mine, and the Lusk Home, as well as some woodlands, before looping back. traveliN Spring 2020

“The upper woodlands have some big, beautiful trees, so don’t overlook that area,” said Aaron Douglass, interpretive naturalist at Turkey Run and Shades state parks. Heading off the challenge trail at Rocky Hollow and exploring is an option, but will turn the five miles into six. The extra mileage could be worth it, as it goes through one of the most beautiful areas in the park, Douglass said. For a similar experience to Turkey Run’s, with fewer crowds, try the Six Ravine Challenge at Shades. The trail is harder to follow because of the way all trails at the park were made. Turkey Run’s trails are more direct, while the Shades trails follow the contour of the land. The result is more of a zig-zag at Shades, Douglass said. The trail follows the landscape into Shawnee Canyon, one of Douglass’ favorite locations at the two parks. Waterfalls can also be seen on the trail, which begins at the Hickory Shelter, which provides the only bathrooms along the journey. 26
traveliN Spring 2020
By the numbers, 488 people completed Turkey Run’s Five Mile Challenge, while 152 have completed the Six Ravine Challenge in 2019. Stickers for both challenges can be obtained at the Turkey Run Nature Center. To see faster moving water, try Clifty Falls State Park’s Four Falls Challenge. The trail leads walkers through the park’s most notable waterfalls along a four-mile stretch with rugged hills and valleys. Pick up a map at the Clifty Falls Nature Center or the front lobby of Clifty Inn, where you can also get a list of waystations that you need to photograph to earn your completion sticker. Traveling along the challenge route also allows you to see some history. Part of the old railroad path that was meant to carry goods up and down the steep hillside out of Madison is visible along the trail, including a 600-foot long tunnel that can be entered from May 1 to Oct. 31. Park interpretive naturalist Kayla Leach said spring is the best time to do the challenge because that’s usually when the falls have the most water, but it’s a great hike any time of the year. The challenge starts on Trail 4 and moves to Trail 5. Hikers will then need to move from Trail 5 to Trail 7 by car to complete the challenge. Plans to connect Trail 5 to Trail 6 and eliminate the need for a car ride are in the works. The Three Dune Challenge at Indiana Dunes State Park is the
shortest challenge trail, 1.5 miles, but it’s also one of the most intense. The trail climbs the three tallest dunes on Indiana’s Lake Michigan shore, 552 vertical feet in all, two of them in sand and one using stairs. There’s only one level area on the trail, a quarter mile through the campground on the way back to the Nature Center. The scenery is worth the exertion. “Once you catch your breath, there are beautiful views capturing different directions of the Lake Michigan landscape,” interpretive naturalist Marie Laudeman said. The Chicago skyline can be seen from the top of one dune on clear days, and on top of another Indiana Dunes Nature Preserve is viewable to Michigan City.
Pokagon’s Hell’s Point Challenge is an eightmile journey through the park.
Stickers are available from the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center in Chesterton after you have completed the trail. Challenge T-shirts and sweatshirts are available for purchase. “Stickers provide people a lot of inspiration that they did it,” Laudeman said. Pokagon State Park’s Hell’s Point Challenge also includes climbing. A visit to Hell’s Point, the park’s highest spot,

which includes 84 stairs, is one of the focal points of an eight-mile journey that connects many of the park’s trails. Six different areas need to be photographed to get the completion sticker and a water bottle. Route maps can be picked up at the nature center. The trail travels through many of the park’s features, including wetlands, deciduous forests, a prairie area, and the Potawatomi Nature Preserve boardwalk. Hikers can also see Civilian Conservation Corps structures and a spring shelter that houses an underground aquifer you can drink from. “It’s a great overview of all we have to offer,” interpretive naturalist Nicky Ball said. Which one of the five challenge trails is the hardest? You’ll have to hike them all to decide for yourself.

Traveling in Style
story by Julie Campbell
Golf cart craze hits the Hoosier state Imagine waking up on a sunny Saturday morning where the only thing on your agenda is exploring the shops and restaurants in a charming Indiana town. You step outside and take a deep breath of fresh air, but instead of walking eight blocks from your bed and breakfast to the town’s main street, you fire up a golf cart and get there in a fraction of the time. Move over Uber—golf carts are quickly becoming the transportation method of choice in many of Indiana’s small towns. Since Indiana’s golf cart law makes it easy for each individual city and town to determine its own ordinance, many towns are allowing visitors and residents to use golf carts to get them from place to place and save their feet (or ankles or knees) from the wear and tear of walking. William “Shorty” Baker, harbor master at Rivercrest Marina in Madison, says golf carts are a “big 28

deal in town.” The full-service marina owns six four-seat golf carts, which stay busy on a consistent basis during their peak season of April 15 to October 15. “As long as the weather permits, we can even rent one in December if someone wants one,” he says, adding that the vehicles have roofs so they protect riders from wet weather. In accordance with Indiana law, golf cart drivers need to be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license. At Rivercrest, though, they must be at least 21 to rent a cart and have proof of insurance. Rental fees are $50 daily Monday through Thursday and $70 Friday through Sunday. Baker says the typical age group that rents carts in Madison is mid-30s and older. “They’re mainly using them to go downtown to the wineries and to go

The golf carts have become so popular in Madison that four years ago the Madison Riverfront Development Committee, which Jim Pruett heads up, launched their first annual “Golf Cart/UTV Poker Run.” While the concept is in line with traditional poker runs—an organized event in which

participants must visit five to seven checkpoints, drawing a playing card at each one hoping to have the best poker hand at the end of the run— this one involves golf carts/UTVs and takes place mostly on Madison’s beautiful riverfront. “If you’re looking for an absolutely FUN event, this is the place to do it,” says JD Webster, a member of the committee. “The first year, we had around 50 golf carts and 100 participants. Last year we had 250-plus carts and 500 participants.” The run takes players to seven different restaurants/bars, and the grand prize is an EZGO Express S4 golf cart, valued at $10,500. Visitors are encouraged to come; in fact, golf cart rentals are available all the way up to the day of the event. Two-seaters rent for just $40. For information, call JD Webster at 513213-5051. Many travelers also rent golf carts

shopping,” he explains. “You can’t drive or park on Main Street, but you can go on all the side streets, and you can cross Main Street.” Popular Madison Realtor Jim Pruett, along with his wife Leah, embrace the town’s golf cart lifestyle. “Anyone who’s been to Madison knows it’s a special place,” Jim says. “We live in the historic district and enjoy showing it off to out-of-town visitors. And the best way to do that is via golf cart—people love it.” Towns like Madison are perfect for traveling by golf cart, because the entire town—133 blocks to be exact— is on the National Historic Registry. That’s a lot of ground to cover by foot! Several of the homes throughout the town, like the Lanier Mansion, the Francis Costigan House, and the Shrewsbury-Windle House are open for tours and draw history and architecture buffs alike.

during festival season, which helps them to avoid walking long distances from their bed and breakfasts to the festival location, says Shorty Baker. Three popular Madison festivals that draw crowds from all over the country are the Madison Ribberfest BBQ and Blues, the Chautauqua Festival of Art, and the Madison Regatta on the beautiful Ohio River. In addition to saving your feet, another benefit of using a golf cart is the money saving aspect. “You can drive around for two weeks on one tank,” Baker notes. “They’re great on gas.” And some golf carts even run on electric power, which saves the environment. Kaylee Hahn of the White County Tourism Authority says that festival time in her county is also golf cart time. “If someone were to rent a golf cart, I would recommend doing so during festival periods so they can take advantage of cruising down streets during a popular time,” she explains.
“Within ‘golf cart distance’ to many White County amenities are multiple resorts, campgrounds, and restaurants which allow cart parking,” Hahn explains, adding that a local company, GT Carts in Monticello, rents carts to visitors. “Lighthouse Lodge Bed & Breakfast has one golf cart that visitors can use, but they encourage guests to bring their own. Alexander’s Landing is a resort with limited parking but do see many tourists using golf carts in/ around the area. All campgrounds welcome golf carts.” In Cicero, where GT Carts has a second location, golf carts are more than welcome in the city limits. Cicero Town Council member Jack Russell says all of downtown Cicero is a great place to drive a golf cart, with loads of great shops and

restaurants to visit. Some restaurants, such as the Boathouse Kitchen and Swan Dive and Wolfie’s Northern Woods Grill, offer waterfront dining at the picturesque Morse Reservoir. “Some places even have golf cart parking,” Russell says. If renting a golf cart at your next destination appeals to you, be sure to call ahead to ask about the town’s golf cart ordinance and about options for rentals. Once you rent a cart, be certain you understand exactly where you can and cannot drive and park, as some cities allow carts on their main streets and others don’t. Nestled on the east side of the Hancock County Courthouse in Greenfield, you will find a great restaurant that features a full menu of wonderful Italian dishes. Tour of Italy Cafe features the ambiance and cuisine of Old World Italy. From hand-tossed pizzas, fresh bread, and a variety of pasta dishes, both young and old will find something to like. Everything is made the traditional way - spaghetti, calzone, ravioli, fettuccine, and Tour of Italy’s signature dish - baked lasagna. The garlic knots are out of this world! A hot crusty bread, smothered in garlic and butter - you won’t be able to eat just one. From the special simmering sauce that graces the spaghetti to the cheesy goodness of the lasagna, Tour of Italy does not disappoint. Ian Harrison insists he always wanted to be a chef. Always. Even though, as a kid, he wasn’t all that keen about eating. But this finicky eater loved looking at cookbooks. “My mother had all these Time-Life cookbooks that took you all over the world,” he says. “As a kid I would leaf through those; it’s like traveling in your mind. his attention. “I think that’s how she got me to eat vegetables,” he says. Soon he was cooking with that wok. When he was a senior in high school, he went to work as a stage at Fletcher’s American Grille & Café in Indianapolis. For free, “to learn about the business to see if I liked it or not.” It was a practice more common in Europe than in the United States. Schooling at IUPUI followed, in restaurant and hospitality management. He knew by then that he definitely wanted to be in the restaurant business. That took him to Benvenuti in Indianapolis where, “after much badgering, they hired me.” In all, he was there about 10 years. While there, Harrison took a sabbatical and went to Florence, Italy, where he worked in what he called one of the best restaurants in the country. He studied under two French pastry chefs; his primary job was to create closers, those small pastries that diners would get at the end of the meal. “I’d make hundreds

and hundreds of these,” he says. But he also rotated through all the stations to learn the entire business, and he traveled where he “tried to eat a lot of Italian specialties.” He returned to Benvenuti, ultimately working as its executive chef. But, he says, almost every chef’s dream is to have their own restaurant. In January 1999 he opened Carnegie’s in Greenfield. His girlfriend had seen a little handwritten sign on a building in downtown Greenfield. She said it would be the perfect place for him. “I wanted something historic and something grand,” Harrison says. “You don’t get the opportunity to buy a Carnegie library very often.” And at the Carnegie, diners find “real food from real people.”

Thyme for Bed B&B Crystal and Bill Britzman, Owners, Innkeepers story by Elizabeth Granger
THYME FOR BED
I
photos by Thyme for Bed B&B
To play up the theme suggested by the B&B’s name, the innkeepers have created a flower “bed” to welcome guests. Left: A winding stairway leads to the entrance of Thyme for Bed.
Dome home an unusual setting for warm, welcoming bed-and-breakfast It started 39 years ago when newlyweds Crystal and Bill Britzman honeymooned at a bed and breakfast in Galena, Illinois. It was love at first stay. And they thought, “We could so do this.” Fast forward more than 35 years and the Britzmans find themselves welcoming guests to their B&B in Lowell, in northwest Indiana. A most unusual B&B, perhaps even the only one like it in the country. Their Thyme for Bed B&B is in a monolithic dome. “My husband loves architecture,” Crystal says. “He loves unique 42

buildings.” And when he discovered the dome about 10 years ago, he surprised his wife with a weekend visit. It had been built in the late 1990s as a B&B. About five years ago the original owners decided to sell. They hosted an online contest; entrants were to explain why they would be good B&B owners. Bill crafted a letter. But there weren’t enough contestants, so the owners closed the contest. Didn’t matter. The Britzmans went ahead with purchasing the B&B – Crystal calls it a leap of faith – and
they moved from northeast Illinois to 10 acres just outside of Lowell where they’re surrounded by farmland. They opened Thyme for Bed as their B&B in time for Valentine’s Day in February 2017. To prepare for their move, they visited the Monolithic Dome Institute in Italy, Texas, to learn about the unusual construction. The buildings started as potato structures, and then someone said he wanted to live in one and the idea of making dome homes was born. They’re scattered throughout the country;
homes in Georgia and Tennessee even offer rooms through Airbnb. The structures are disaster-resistant, energy-efficient and cost-effective. “We took a week-long workshop and we participated in building a dome because we wanted to know more about the structure, in case we decide to build another one on the property,” Crystal says. Thyme for Bed is one large dome with the Britzmans’ living quarters and three guest rooms, each with a full private bath. The largest room, with a king-sized bed, is on the main level; two rooms with queen-sized beds are on the second floor. Each room is named. The largest is the In Your Dreams room; the others are the Pheasant Room and the Victoria Room. There’s a balcony off the second floor as well as a garden patio. “People are in awe when they come inside,” Crystal says. “It’s spacious like a normal home, but it doesn’t look like it on the outside.” She says it’s very quiet inside. “The building has a calming effect.” Crystal likes to cook. “I always make scones for breakfast,” she says. “That’s a given.” The favorites are orange scones. “Even people who don’t like orange have really liked the orange scones,” she says. Cinnamon scones are also popular. And she makes her own yogurt, often topped with fresh fruit. Egg frittatas are popular, as is her cream cheese French toast casserole with blueberries. “In the fall people love my cream cheese pumpkin French toast casserole. It is a winner.” There’s always some kind of meat – typically bacon or sausage.
Innkeeper Crystal Britzman loves to set a welcoming table for breakfast. She even scours websites for unusual ways to fold napkins.

The Britzmans encourage guests to sit and visit at breakfast, especially on the weekends. “We spend time with our guests,” Crystal says. “We think it’s important for our guests to feel comfortable and at home, and that they make new friends.” She adds, “We appreciate and respect the business. We just love doing this.”

For those who are attracted to the pounding of hooves and thrill of the chase, but think horse racing is for the elite crowds, there is a surprisingly affordable way to get in on the action. It’s called fractional horse ownership. You join a group of like-minded enthusiasts and invest in the sport without having to take full responsibility for the wins and losses. The initial investment can be as low as one payment of $250. Plus, some investors are finding new friends or strengthening old friendships along the way. Fractional partnerships are set up according to what the members want, and can vary. Some of them only enter horses in competition in Indiana and others venture farther. The percentages of ownership may be different; the number of horses that are owned varies, and how the agreements are ended can be individualized. Depending on the agreement, a partnership may end when a horse is claimed or purchased. On the flipside, after the sale, the partners may decide to continue on and go out looking for another horse to purchase. Tim Glyshaw is a trainer who works with horses across the country and has roots in Indiana, including a degree from Indiana University. Glyshaw’s clientele includes a few fractional horse partnerships. “The great thing is, fractional ownership gives everyday people, not just ultra-rich people, a chance to participate in horse racing,” Glyshaw said. “If you only own a percentage of the horse, it obviously cuts down on your expenses. In Indiana, our racing season goes from mid-April through mid-November.” One Indiana fractional ownership group success story was a horse named Bucchero, owned by a group

highest money-winning, Indiana-bred horse in history. Bucchero’s crowning glory might have been when he was accepted and raced in England at the Royal Ascot. If there was any doubt, fractional owners are just as serious about competing as other owners are. traveliN Spring 2020

any of the three breeds of racehorses in Indiana—Thoroughbred, Quarter Horses and Standardbreds, according to Megan Arszman, marketing and communications director for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. “Success can be found with the horse winning a single race, or even one of the most well-known races, like the Kentucky Derby,” she said. “Smarty Jones was probably one of the most famous horses owned by a
fractional partnership,” Arszman said. “He was owned by a large group of high school buddies. They arrived at races in an old school bus. He won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in 2004.” Harrah’s Hoosier Park, Indiana’s harness racing pari-mutuel track, just announced the return of their fractional ownership group for 2020. The group is called First Turn Stable, and the horse will race at the Anderson track exclusively, allowing for owners to experience the thrill of owning a racehorse and seeing their horse often. Arszman said people still tend to think of horse owners as being business people, millionaires, and entrepreneurs, but fractional ownership turns that idea on its head, and all are welcome. “Fractional ownership is considered the future of horse racing because it allows the every day person to get involved,” she said. “It’s getting to be more popular and a little bit more mainstream. There are a number of groups racing in Indiana always looking for more investors.” If the idea of owning a racehorse intrigues you, reach out to the Indiana Horse Racing Commission: 317-232-2897 or go to www.in.gov/hrc/

Visitors to this southern Indiana county will experience a rich history, outdoor experiences, local shopping, and more. If you think about the history of wine making in the United States, you may be surprised to learn that the first commercial wine making operation was not in California, but right here in Switzerland County, Indiana. In 1796, John James Dufour left his native Switzerland to seek a new life and opportunity in the United States. He settled in what would become the town of Vevay, Indiana, which was briefly a popular destination for Swiss immigrants fleeing revolutionary Europe. Dufour had done his homework, studying 58

viticulture and working the family vineyards in Switzerland. When he arrived in America, he visited private vineyards, including Thomas Jefferson’s at Monticello, to study grape types, soil, and climate. He produced his first wine by 1807, and sold in frontier cities including Cincinnati, Louisville, and St. Louis. In the end, the wine business was eclipsed by hay, which was in high demand and easy to load onto riverboats passing through Vevay on their way down the Ohio River. Today, the Musee de Venoge stands as a testament to southern
Indiana’s once thriving grape culture. The farmhouse dates to about 1805 and is a rare example of French colonial architecture. The home is open for events and by appointment. www.venoge.org And that wine history? The annual Swiss Wine Festival, on the last weekend in August this year, is the largest event in the county and Indiana’s fourth top festival, paying homage to John James Dufour. The festival features a parade, live entertainment, arts & crafts vendors, great food, a grape stomp, and of course—a wine tasting pavilion. www.swisswinefestival.org Vevay’s Ridge Winery, on the Indiana Wine Trail, commemorates that history with its Swiss Heritage red wine. The winery has won several awards; in fact, their Country White Wine earned Best of Class Double Gold Medal at 2019 Indy International Wine Competition, along with two Silver Medals. Their tasting room looks out over the Ohio River, and visitors can enjoy a glass of wine while they watch the tugs and barges make their way along the river. www.theridgewinery.com The Ohio River is always a draw for visitors wanting to take advantage of boating, and fishing for bass, crappie, catfish, gar and more.

The trails are interwoven within and among communities, and sometimes it’s just a matter of being aware of the locations and open to possibility. Whether a spontaneous decision or a strategically planned adventure, there truly is a trail for everyone. For Richmond Friends School music instructor Jim McKinney, the Cardinal Greenway trail is hard to miss due to its close proximity to home. One summer he and students from the K-8th grade school were already at Richmond’s Springwood Park when they opted for a spur-ofthe-moment stroll along the trail. “Five or six students and I walked about a half mile or a mile,” McKinney said. “It’s just the location is so nice. It runs right through the park. It’s very scenic, untouched, very natural. You kind of feel like you’re in another world at that point.” While Richmond visitors and

residents enjoy their portion of the Cardinal Greenway, the trail actually runs 62 miles. “We span across the counties of Grant, Delaware, Henry, Randolph and Wayne,” said Angie Pool, CEO of Cardinal Greenway, Inc. “The Cardinal Greenway’s headquarters are in Muncie in a beautiful restored train depot. We also manage the White River Greenway Trail for the City of Muncie, which is six miles in length. We’re in the midst of a multi-phase construction project that will add a historic, select bridge that will span White River and connect these two trail systems.” Delaware County is also home to the Cardinal Equestrian trail near Prairie Creek Reservoir and there is a dedicated group building a mountain bike trail also near the reservoir. Nearby Yorktown has been busy building trails within their city limits, too, that will end a few hundred feet shy of connecting to the White River Greenway.” www.cardinalgreenways.org On the flipside, Kevin Whited and some friends from Chicago devised a well-planned trek along the Carmel stretch of trails known as the Monon Greenway, and all brought their own bikes. The state’s trails are called rails-to-trails because they are paved paths over former railroad tracks, and are named for the former railroads. Bikes can be rented for a few dollars per hour in some places. “The Monon starts in downtown Indianapolis and ends up in Carmel,” Whited said. “My friend said, ‘This is so interesting because I’ve never been on an urban trail.’ There are quite a few restaurants and bars and many have bike racks. of geological history are only a sampling of all there is to see along the cavern tour. Sparkling stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and more adorn the cavern walls, ceilings and floors in a natural wonder that has taken millions of years for nature to create. The cave tour is about 1/3 mile long with new passageways, bridges, staircases and a 270 degree view of the famed rimstone dams.
Park History Named in honor and spirit of Squire Boone, little brother to Daniel and a renowned pioneer, explorer, minister and statesman who helped lead the discovery and settlement of Kentucky and Southern Indiana. The Boone brothers discovered these caverns in 1790 and Squire would later return to settle the land and live throughout the last decade of his life. Exploring the cave was his favorite pastime and he considered the cave sacred land… you’ll understand why after just one visit. Upon returning to what would become Boone’s Settlement, Squire constructed a grist mill that would serve to provide commerce and aid the area’s residents. As the cavern was being prepared for the public, Squire’s remains were discovered in a remote opening to the cave and authenticated by experts who identified injuries Squire
sustained throughout his life that were evident on the remains. His final resting place is an important stop along the tour, where you’ll learn more about his contributions and time spent at the cave. While the original grist mill was destroyed by fire in the 1800’s, the foundation stood strong and the mill has been reconstructed to working order. Inside Historic Boone’s Mill, you’ll see how grain was prepared and be able to read Squire’s carvings that were found near his remains in the cave or in the foundation of the original mill. A visit to Squire Boone Caverns Park is equally educational and inspiring as you travel to the past underground and above. As you stroll through the park to see the soap and candle making demonstrations and the thousands of pounds of mineral, fossil and crystal specimens in the rock shop, you’ll be walking in the
footsteps of the Boone brothers, two of America’s prominent pioneers and explorers. Not to mention the view from our tree top zipline that includes 6 lines and a suspension bridge. Cave Tours and Squire's Barnyard are available year-round with at least 4 tours daily. All park features officially open for the season during Memorial Day weekend. Reno Brothers Great Train Robbery Reenactment IN Scott County’s history…dating back to February 1, 1820, the Indiana Legislature and the State of Indiana’s first Governor Johnathan Jennings granted the petition of the people to establish a new county. The development of Scott County is unique… as sections of all five surrounding counties Jackson (est. 1816), Jennings (est. 1817), Jefferson (est. 1811), Clark (est. 1801), and Washington (est. 1814), were taken to form Scott County. Some may not know Scott County was named in honor of a Revolutionary War hero who later became the fifth Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Brigadier General Charles Scott. Scott County’s incorporation in the 1820’s marked a period in the political history of the United States that reflected a sense of national purpose and unity among Americans in the aftermath of the War of 1812. The 1820’s saw the rise of the First Industrial Revolution progressing from: hand production methods to machines, new chemical manufacturing and iron production as well as the increased use of steam

Cole Porter’s legacy lives on in his Hoosier hometown and in current day settings. Born in Peru, Indiana, the world-renowned composer and songwriter grew up and graduated high school there. The annual Cole Porter Festival is slated for June 11-14. Plus, his music has been reawakened through a current star, even though Porter died in 1964 at age 73. Polly Dobbs is Cole Porter’s cousin and serves on the Cole Porter Festival executive committee. “Harry Connick Jr. released his album, True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter, in 2019 and performed it on Broadway in December,” Dobbs said. “I shook his hand in New York and stood in line with thousands of people. He’s touring that show now. There’s a whole new generation exposed to Cole Porter’s music.” “The festival is meant to help keep educating new people and a new generation about those tunes,” Dobbs said. “Every year there is someone new that comes to the festival that is a surprise, someone that really tickles me that they would come. Every year I’m amazed at the enthusiasm and appreciation that we see for Cole Porter’s music and lyrics this many decades after he died.” Vicki Draper, event manager for the Cole Porter Festival, said events that are old favorites are returning and new offerings have been added.
"We’re having after parties this year for a couple of events. I think it's going to be fun,” Vicki says. "Peru is a great little town that is coming up and we've got a lot of new small businesses open now and others in the works. These are fantastic festivals with a lot to offer." On June 11th at 9 p.m., after the progressive dinner, there’s an event at the Riverview Event Center, which is relatively new and located on the canal. It will have a cash bar, snacks, and music by one of the favorite bands locally, the Time Travelers. On June 12, a ‘20s Party is having its debut after the very popular “Cocktails & Cole” event at 7 pm. “Our DJ will play a variety of music, including some Cole Porter tunes,” Vicki says. This will be held in the Miami County Artisan Gallery on Broadway. The town has a wide selection of activities. See art displays at the high school, at Gallery 15 on Main Street and the Miami County Artisan Gallery. Snag a bus tour ticket throughout the day Saturday but you’ll need to reserve early for the 10 a.m. departure, and to get a seat at Music at the Museum on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Miami County Artisan Gallery will feature “Lunch with Mr. Porter,” a gourmet lunch with Peru High School’s choral director, Dr. Jason Gornto, as Cole Porter, and special guest San Francisco Opera member Lisa van der Ploeg. Festival favorite Charles Troy will present two educational multimedia presentations with video, music and his insights. The galleries and the multimedia presentations are free, and the luncheon is $30 and reservations are required. (www. coleporterfestival.com, or Miami County Museum at (765) 473-9183.) We also have a kiddy clown part where even younger kids dance to a song.” Besides the incredible circus shows in the Circus Center, another festival highlight is the Circus City Festival Parade, which takes place on the concluding Saturday of the festival and is the only circus heritage parade in the United States. Authentic circus wagons, clowns, calliopes, wild animals, floats, and bands make their way down the center streets of the town. This parade is the longest running circus parade in the country and the second largest parade in Indiana. traveliN Spring 2020

Each day opens in front of you, filled with possibility. It’s the magic of life along the Heritage Trail, connecting Elkhart County’s cities and towns. The Heritage Trail audio driving tour is your guide and companion, and every mile tells a story. Elkhart County is a place where quality craftsmanship, innovation and collaboration results in a well crafted life. Our cities crackle with an energy, whether it’s work or play. Sometimes you’ll want to stop and catch your breath. You can do that here too. We’re big believers in quality, craftsmanship and doing things the right way. Handmade and handcrafted isn’t just a buzzword here. 76

The Amish have made their home here. Their artisans make showpieces out of things we use every day, from chairs and furniture to quilts and rugs. Even meals are works of art with recipes handed down from generation to generation on noodles, chicken, pie and more. It’s always best to experience Amish Country up close and personal. The welcome mat is always out at Dutch Country Market, Teaberry Wood Products and Coppes Commons. More than anything, it’s the people you meet and their stories that will define your time here. Our city streets are lined with the history of boom times, when industrialists and inventors helped fuel the growth of America with musical instruments, pharmaceuticals, kitchen cabinets and recreational vehicles. Their fortunes built the downtowns and stately neighborhoods surrounding them. The story of Elkhart County is told through the people and places along the Heritage Trail and the innovations that make this place well crafted. The older factories and office buildings of one-time giants are tough, gritty survivors that buzz with an
energetic entrepreneurial spirit. It’s in these re-invented places that you’ll discover a proud community of makers. Local bartenders mix hand-crafted cocktails and craft brewers concoct heady hops in these spaces. Potters and artist studios, rug weavers, and museums call these places home. We do love our festivals, because we love fun as part of everyday life, and we want everyday life to feel special. Wakarusa kicks it off every year with the Maple Syrup Festival, but then it gets hard to choose, there’s so much to do. The beauty of it all is it never feels rushed. Stop and smell the flowers. The colorful patchwork of quilt-inspired gardens in six cities and towns along the Heritage Trail delivers dazzling views and magnificent photo ops, #QuiltGardens No matter where your journey takes you along the Heritage Trail, there’s always more for you to discover and more memories for you to create. Let the Spirit Move You story by Cathy Shouse

Hoosiers are finding unique ways to let the spirit move them, literally. They’re sharing their faith in unconventional places, many times off the beaten paths. 82

Some may relate to the late social commentator Will Rogers on religion, who said he had mixed with so many people in all parts of the world, “I don’t know just what I am. I know I have never been a non-believer.” Many of the faithful have been brought together over their specialized interests and hobbies. All agree the resulting worship experiences are gratifying and refreshingly outside the norm. Many worship times are
actually held in the great outdoors, to enjoy nature. Whenever Donna Boatwright of Grant County is able, she and her family will visit the Sunday morning worship services at Brown County State Park. In 2005, Dean and April Manuel started the tradition at the Horseman’s Camp located inside the park. Most attendees are people staying at the campgrounds, but everyone is welcome.

20,000+ biscuits/scones made by April; 3,200 miles around the park with the wagon; 4 times rebuilding the wagon; 552 Sunday sermons; 16,000 people in the services; 63 baptisms. To sample another special service, head to Lake Wawasee in Syracuse on a Sunday morning. Harlan Steffen, 86, still works part-time at Steffen Realty and he is one of the “initiators” of the popular Boat-in Worship. “It’s outdoors in God’s great cathedral,” he said. “There’s nothing more natural than God’s world. “It’ll be worth your while to take a drive and go to the Boat-in Worship on Lake Wawasee, Indiana’s largest natural lake. You’ll understand why people will get up that early to worship. We’ve been doing this for fifty years and a lot of Sundays we’ll have over a thousand people.” There’s free coffee and doughnuts. Call Steffan’s cell at 574-529-3627 for more information. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, they meet Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Three ways to arrive: 1) come in on a private boat 2) stay at the Oakwood Resort and sit on the shore or 3) go to the Frog Tavern and come on the S. S. Lillypad, a 70-foot dinner houseboat. “Come as you are” is truly celebrated at the “Drive-In” worship services in Monticello. Every Sunday, Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Monticello United Methodist Church hosts its services at the Lake Shore outdoor drive-in theatre. “Kids--and some adults-come in their pajamas since they stay in their cars to worship,” says pastor Brian Beeks. The church brings in a wagon with a pulpit, and connects with the theatre’s sound system. “It’s certainly different than our downtown

“The Lord called me to it and I just followed his lead,” Manuel said. “Mostly, I was a worship leader. I just started this ministry, where it was outside.” About 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, he and his horses take the wagon around to collect his congregation. At 9:30 a.m., his wife April serves breakfast, coffee and cocoa and by 10 a.m. Manuel begins the service, including a fifteen- to twenty-minute message. They meet from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in November, and always outside. The coldest day so far was 13 degrees and he “just turned the campfire up hotter.” The horses will sometimes make their presence known, whether tied to the hitching post alone or with riders still in their saddles. “Sometimes, I’ll be preaching, and they’ll really start in whinnying,” Manuel said. “I tell people, That’s their amen.” Manuel recently compiled stats for the 15 years since they started:

“It is definitely an awesome experience,” Boatwright said. “April and Dean just really have a heart for ministry and for the people in the campground. It’s not uncommon to have 90 people. We’ve been taking our grandkids since they were little and they love it. Two of our grandsons are in their twenties now and still love to go. (The Manuels) will have two Belgian type horses pulling a wagon and they will come around the campground and pick people up. Some will ride to the service on their horses and even stay on horseback through the service. There is always music. The campers sometimes bring their instruments. They might bring a guitar or a trumpet, whatever they have. People have been baptized in the creek. It’s like our church away from home.” Dean Manuel said he had never given a sermon until he started speaking around the fire at the Horseman’s Camp services (HCCO Park on Facebook).

services,” Beeks says. “We preach to car windshields, and people respond by honking their horns.” The services have been going on since the late 1970s, and some members of the congregation have been coming since they first started back in 1977. Doughnuts are served the third Sunday of the month, and communion is done once a month. There are typically around 100 people who attend each week. For more information, call the church at 574583-5545. Historically, religious expression and worship have been a strong part of the “Chautauqua” experience. In Remington, halfway between Indianapolis and Chicago, Fountain Park Chautauqua has continued to promote the concepts and values of the early Chautauqua movement. There are nondenominational Sunday worship services, along with daily afternoon and evening programs or speakers providing cultural education and family entertainment. Also offered are daily art classes including oil painting, watercolor painting, quilting, and an abundance of kids activities. Fountain Park was the dream of Robert Parker, president of the Bank of Remington, Indiana. In 1893 he purchased the land and began making plans. By the first session a tabernacle and restaurant were built, and in 1898 a summer hotel was constructed and is still in use today. By 1905 the number of cottages totaled forty. Now there are seventy-three. There are also campsites, a 600-seat tabernacle complete with dressing rooms, double art buildings for adult and youth art classes, museum, recreational hall, shelter, food stand, gazebo, playground equipment and basketball court. www.fountain-park.org Other sites offer more individualized experience and some

The Shrine of Christ’s Passion

I
The small town of St. John, nestled in the far northwest corner of Indiana, might seem like a surprising tourist destination, but it has quickly become well known by people of all faiths from all over the world. It has attracted visitors from all 50 states and more than 40 different countries.
At The Shrine of Christ’s Passion you can: • sit at the Last Supper table; • pray with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane; • walk alongside him on the path to Mt. Calvary; • and rejoice with the apostles as you enter & experience the empty tomb.
The Shrine is an interactive, multimedia, “Prayer Trail” that depicts the last days of Jesus Christ’s life on earth. Forty life-size bronze sculptures, each an exquisite work of art, line the winding half-mile path. The journey is complete with hauntingly beautiful original music that helps to reflect the story of Jesus’ Passion, death, and Resurrection. As you walk along, the music transitions 17 times, depending on the mood of each scene. Guests experience, as never before, Christ’s final days on earth, beginning with the Last Supper, where you can sit with Jesus at the 86
traveliN Spring 2020
Last Supper table just as his apostles did. At each location, with the simple press of a button, a guest can hear a description of the scene and a short reflection. The setting is meditative and people following the Prayer Trail often find themselves in deep contemplation, some with tears in their eyes. Landscaping throughout the breathtaking journey includes more than 1,000 trees, bushes, shrubs, flowers, and grasses. Everything was chosen to make the visitor feel that they are right there in the Holy Land. Bill Kurtis, former news anchor of Channel 2, narrates each scene. In 2016, the Shrine welcomed Moses at Mt. Sinai. Imagine seeing Moses, coming down Mt. Sinai, carrying God’s Law, the Then Commandments, in his arms. As you wander along the path, you can hear the wind whipping around the mountain; it feels as if you are in a true mountain range in the middle of the desert! This project alone took years to build. Thousands of loads of clay and more than 140 truckloads of boulders from a Wisconsin quarry were used to create an impressive mountain.
There is no charge to experience The Shrine of Christ’s Passion. It is absolutely FREE, but it’s a Priceless Experience. Donations and the proceeds from The Gift Shoppe sustain and support the upkeep and maintenance of The Shrine. The Gift Shoppe is over 12,000 square feet and stocks thousands of beautiful items. In fact, The Gift Shoppe has become a shopping destination for people throughout the Midwest. It’s truly a must see! “COME TAKE THE JOURNEY!” For information, please call (855)277-7474 or visit www.shrineofchristspassion.org

Riverfront District Continues to Grow
Renderings show the next phases of Fort Wayne’s Riverfront District. PHOTOS: Visit Fort Wayne 92
traveliN Spring 2020
Riverfront Fort Wayne is an emerging district celebrating the city’s three rivers—the St. Marys, St. Joseph, and Maumee. Promenade Park was the first step toward delivering the riverfront district and features a restaurant, tree canopy trail, kids splash features, amphitheatre, new river docking systems for kayaks and tour boats, yard games, and more. But you’ll soon be seeing the district grow, with housing, more restaurants, and shops that will complement the recreational elements currently enjoyed on the waterways as Phase II of the riverfront project moves forward. The next phases of the project have been introduced, and Phase II will incorporate the levee, allowing residents to walk to the top and then relax in gathering spaces where they can enjoy the views and access other park amenities. Highlights include space for short-term boat, kayak and canoe docking; a variation of the tree canopy trail in Promenade Park that connects to an overlook deck on the 3rd Street Pump Station; a wetland path; terraced lawn with amphitheater seating; and space to build a future private restaurant and public restrooms. Construction should start within 12-18 months.
Phase III will begin after Phase II has been completed, and will feature a wetland boardwalk through Guldlin and Bloomingdale parks; a lookout tower that residents and visitors can climb; pedestrian bridge connecting the north and south sides of the St. Marys River; enhanced boat ramp with additional parking; a lawn bowl that could be used for sledding in the winter; a nature play area for children; and recreation areas including basketball courts. “We are taking the next steps in continuing our commitment of creating a vibrant Riverfront District that will become a welcoming destination for residents and visitors,” said Mayor Tom Henry. “These next phases will build on our extraordinary success with Promenade Park and encourage even more private development in the area.” Fort Wayne continues to be a top destination for travelers, and has earned national attention including Chicago Tribune’s Best of the Midwest: 10 places to go in 2020; Frommer’s Best Places to Go in 2020; Good Morning America’s 5 Instagrammable destinations to visit in 2020; and Forbes’ US Travel: 25 Best Places to Visit in 2020. BREWS & BARRELS Carmel launches new ‘spirit-filled’ tour of city breweries, distilleries and wineries

Carmel is a city that knows how to celebrate the arts – from music on the big stage at the Palladium, to street musicians, sidewalk artists, local hand-crafters and sculptors creating visual pieces throughout the city. Now it’s time to celebrate the art of brewing, distilling and crushing grapes! In 2020, the City of Carmel launched the Brews & Barrels Trail to help guide visitors to Carmel’s unique craft breweries, distilleries and wineries. Brews & Barrels initially features more than a dozen stops, from small crafters focused on highly creative spirits to fast-growing operations that distribute their products throughout the Midwest from their home in Carmel. “Carmel has many fine places to dine and grab an adult beverage and we encourage visitors to try them all. But this Brews & Barrels Trail will serve to highlight the true artists who brew their own craft beers, distill their own spirits or make their own wine,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. “This is similar to the way we celebrate our great coffee shops through our Carmel Caffeine Trail … only with a different kind of beverage.”
The Trail will include award-winning Flix Brewhouse Carmel, the Indiana Brewery of the Year for 2019 and Grand Champion Brewery, honors won at the Indiana Brewer’s Cup. Located within a “cinema brewery,” Flix is the only first run movie theatre in the world to incorporate a fully functioning microbrewery. In addition, the stadium seating inside the theaters, the Flix Mix lobby bar and cafe is open seven days a week to the public, no ticket required. Rob Malad, the head brewer at Flix, served in the U.S. Army before taking his first brewery job at Sun King in downtown Indianapolis. “I was just filling growlers on Friday nights and doing other jobs, working my way up. This is where I learned how to make good beer.” Flix maintains a menu of IPA’s, stouts, wheats, Scottish and Golden ales. Malad calls them straightforward, good beers and he loves selling them in Carmel. “I am a classic style brewer, so we don’t get too crazy here. We just like to make really good beer.” From major brewing operations like Flix and Danny Boy Beer Works – which cans and distributes its craft
beers throughout the Midwest – to the small, creative and crafty artists at Books and Brews (mixers of hops and Hemingway), Deviate Brewing (where they experiment with bananas and chocolate) and Union Brewing, where there is always beer on tap and on cask (unfiltered beer with a different kind of flavor). Brews & Barrels is more than just beer. If you’re on Main Street, the Trail will take you to Peace Water Winery, where owner Scott Burton offers very unique wines made by the grapes he grows in Napa Valley and serves by the glass or the bottle in the heart of the Arts & Design District. “This location is ideal for visitors to Carmel who are looking for a place to stop and enjoy something really special during a day of shopping and experiencing our beautiful city,” said Burton. “Our customers love coming in and finding our menu of wines designed to appeal to any taste palate, from rookies to those with discerning taste buds.” Some of their top-selling wines include “Passion,” a Cabernet Sauvignon, their “Grateful Red” (which traveliN Spring 2020

won the title of “Red Wine of the Year” at the 2015 Indy International Wine Competition), as well as “Wishful White” and “Bliss” white wines. A $10 tasting will get you samples of five different wines. If you decide to buy a bottle, you get to give back to the

community as a portion of each sale goes to a charity of your choice – by dropping a token into a special bucket on the wall. “We donate 50 percent of our net profits to charities,” said Burton, whose kids have picked the choices of different charities from which to choose. “Giving back to the community is very important to us and to our customers.” Just down the street is another Carmel winery, Sugar Creek Vineyard and Winery, which grows its grapes in Indiana, serving them in a tasting room that features a spacious outdoor fire pit on West Main Street for enjoying a late night in the city. If you’re looking for something a little stronger, Carmel is also home to two distilleries, including Danny Boy,
i n d i a n a
the craft beer maker which began bottling its own spirits – Buddha Vodka, Rum, Tequila and Gin – a few years ago and Sun King Carmel, another popular brewery, which chose Carmel’s Midtown as its location for its first distillery that is also bottling its Agave, Rum and White Whiskey. Variety is the key when it comes to enjoying the new Carmel Brews & Barrels Trail. Several of the stops are located right on the Monon Greenway, like Union, Sun King and Fork + Ale House Kitchen & Brewery, easy to access on foot or on bike. But with a designated driver and perhaps an extra day, you can experience all of the unique brews, barrels and spirits of Carmel’s growing family of craft mixologists! www.Carmel.in.gov

Internationally-known artist Bob Ross inspired generations of television viewers with his softspoken voice and a pallet knife. With its global reach, it’s hard to imagine that much of the beloved series, “The Joy of Painting,” was filmed in an unassuming studio in Muncie, Indiana. Bob painted for the iconic series out of the historic L.L. Ball home on Minnetrista’s campus from 1983 to 1988. Bob’s message of fearless creativity and his ability to reinterpret perceived mistakes as “happy little accidents” is something we want to see amplified in our world today. All Aboard
for Wabash County’s Fun Trolley Tours
wabash
I
story by Cathy Shouse
“Clang, clang, clang went the trolley,” from the famous Judy Garland song, applies to Wabash County. Going into its fourth year, trolley rides have been available, either on planned, themed tours, or for private rental. Now the program is getting a major upgrade with a new trolley on order. The arrival will hopefully be mid-May. All agree that the trolley puts a nice flavor on the town, especially with the Taste of Wabash tour. “The new trolley is being custom built for us by Hometown Trolley in Wisconsin and they’ll be driving it down,“ said Jennifer Long-Dillon, tourism manager for Visit Wabash County. “I’ve been months working with them. It holds 40 people and has a wheelchair lift ramp. It’s going to 110

be on a heavy-duty chassis and have mahogany wood inside and out. Our current, 20-passenger one, we bought used from out-of-state and we’ll be trading it in. The trolley’s becoming so popular that we’re outgrowing our old one. “ A favorite tour, The Taste of Wabash, will return after a year’s hiatus. Alan Jachinski, chef and innkeeper of Herrold on Hill Bed & Breakfast, has been a regular on the tour. In 2018, he served smoked Alaskan salmon stuffed aebleskivers for an entrée. “The menu varies each time, based on the time of the year and what people want,” Jachinski said. “When they sign up, they can let us know their preferences, from meat to fish to vegetarian. They come from all
over, one year from Copenhagen, the people were in town visiting relatives. They were very, very impressed. The trolley puts a nice layer on things. People are always looking for ways of transportation. Wabash is small but it’s hilly and the trolley saves walking up hills.” A partnership with the City of Wabash and Visit Wabash County is funding the new trolley. For 2020, seven tours are planned. For most, just one trolley full is scheduled, and the tickets go fast. To get early notice on ticket sales, sign up for the trolley newsletter at jennifer@ visitwabashcounty.com You can also catch some trolley fun at First Friday events as well as all festivals. A new offering is May 23rd,

a historic buildings tour, replaces last year’s trolley homes tour. Rentals are often made for weddings, etc. and rates vary from $250 to $400 per hour. https://visitwabashcounty.com/toursand-trolley-rentals/ The Woman’s Clubhouse has participated and gives tours of the historic building as well as serving lunch, such as salad stuffed pasta shell drizzled with in-house vinaigrette dressing. Ellen Stouffer, vice president in charge of the house, said, “We had basically a light lunch and a tour. We’ve recently added a three-story porch. Visit Wabash County likes the clubhouse because of its history and it goes along with the theme. It’s just a positive for everyone.” David Cattin of Peru works part-time at the Honeywell Center and discovered the clubhouse through taking a trolley tour. He’s since become involved and attended a board meeting in March. “I wanted to see if I might be of some other service to them,” he said. He described the tour as “very enjoyable” and “wonderful.” To put his comments into perspective, Cattin’s originally from Peru and returned to the area after having a career in Washington D.C. He has travelled the world, and appreciates the trolley tour as being among the best activities he has been on. Since the new trolley will go normal speeds and can be taken on highways, there are new programming possibilities. “We would like to go and get people and bring them to Wabash…It’s going to expand our opportunities to engage outsiders in our county,” Long-Dillon said. If you catch the Wabash trolley this spring, you, too, may remember Judy Garland’s singing: “Chug, chug, chug went the motor; Bump, bump, bump went the brake…” 111

Columbus, Indiana, is a one-of-akind community that embraced the future and chose architecture as the way to express its optimism. It’s a place where every brick tells a story. Since the early 1940s some of the world’s finest architects have left their impressions on this special place. This small, friendly town is a virtual museum of modern architecture with
works by some of the most enduring names in architecture, like I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi, as well as Eliel and Eero Saarinen, just to name a few. Great design is everywhere – in 70 modern buildings, award-winning parks and landscapes, dozens of large-scale public art installations, and, even in the bridges. This is why the American Institute of Architects ranked the city sixth in the U.S. for architectural innovation and design. National Geographic Traveler recently ranked the city of 40,000 residents 11th out of 109 historic destinations worldwide by National Geographic Society’s Center for

Sustainable Destinations. Columbus scored 78 points in the annual survey, placing it 11th on the list, higher than any other U.S. destination. “Although it is surprising to see a Midwestern burg in the company of Dijon and Stockholm, this jewel in the region boasts world-class mid-century modern architecture,” the magazine states. One of the first things a visitor notices when approaching the city is the Bartholomew County Courthouse, a stunning old beauty, built in 1874. This beautifully-restored building set a high standard for all the public buildings that would follow. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, during the post-war boom, city leaders were inspired to transform this community in a bold way, by creating a community that is both beautiful and livable. Many

Creative energy has guided Marlene (Marlee) Mickelson throughout her life. From a professional educator, counselor, editor, and public speaker, she now adds “art” to her repertoire. “Art” as in teacher, artist, and gallery director and curator. She’s based out of Peru, Indiana, in the Miami County Artisan Gallery she established in September 2015. She works and inspires ten artists in the gallery and about 45 others by displaying their art, and also through monthly art events. An award-winning artist, she does oils, mixed media, rosemaling, draws, sculpts and does etchings. In May, 2016, her rock sculptures were displayed in the Honeywell Center Art Show. The Miami County Artisan Gallery is home to not just artists, but also seminars, art classes, open houses, and

Wacky Cultural Celebration An entire festival and internationally known celebration of the pierogi takes place annually on the last weekend of July in downtown Whiting. Pierogi Fest brings thousands to 119th Avenue to dance polka and eat at one of the largest food festivals in the Midwest. Five million pierogis, two million sausages, 10,000 gallons of soft drinks, and 3,000 gallons of beer will be served to more than 400,000 smiling faces through the duration of the festival this year. Pierogi Fest® welcomes all to celebrate Eastern European heritage with a wacky twist.
This cultural celebration kicks off on July 24 with the Polka Parade and continues with fun and food through July 26. Festival-goers will enjoy specialty arts and craft vendors, beer and wine gardens, games -for adults and children – as well as daily entertainment. Enjoy music and dancing throughout the festival as well as events like the Polkahontas Polka Contest, Buscia Match Game, and the Pierogi Toss. When visiting, keep your eyes peeled for Mr. Pierogi and other life-size Polish pastries and be sure to snap a picture with them! (119th Street, Whiting | pierogifest.net)
