Telling the Stories of Authentic Indiana

There are few things more gratifying than showing respect for, and thanking, America’s troops and veterans. In this issue, you’ll read about Hoosier veterans who are making their mark in the Indiana hospitality industry.

It’s not often we have the opportunity to feature a hometown celebrity on our cover, so we’re thrilled that HGTV star and author Mina Starsiak Hawk is adorning this one. Mina’s shop, Two Chicks District Co., is one of the dozens of cool places featured in our cover story that will inspire you to plan a destination shopping trip this season. And be sure and check out our shopping guide, starting on page 28, for even more stops to include on your “must visit” shopping road trips. There are few things more gratifying than showing respect for, and thanking, America’s troops and veterans. In this issue, you’ll read about Hoosier veterans who are making their mark in the Indiana hospitality industry. Please take some time to read “Veterans Day Salute” and even more time supporting their businesses. While this issue is full of cooler-weather events and holiday activities, you’ll find out how to visit some of Indiana’s most beautiful settings, no matter the season, in our story on botanical gardens. You’ll learn about indoor tropical gardens, unique ecosystems under glass, an old growth forest, and even a “scratch and sniff” garden. We’ve included our regular sections—Destination, Outdoor, Culinary, and Arts—where you’ll get even more ideas on great destinations to explore and enjoy around Indiana. And, as always, be sure and visit our website, www.travelindiana.com, for up-todate trip ideas. Finally, Travel Indiana wants to welcome our newest team member, Jenson Pearce, who joined our staff September 7 at 3:55 p.m. Proud mom Andrea Pearce, our operations and digital manager, and Baby Jenson are doing great and can’t wait to travel Indiana together.

Shopping story by julie campbell

Take a step inside Two Chicks District Co. with Mina Starsiak Hawk. Plus, the state’s top holiday shopping destinations.

To find the perfect holiday present, Hoosiers don’t have to resort to scrolling endless Internet sites or scouring picked-over displays at a big box store. As the holidays grow closer, there’s no better time to start making memories with your family and friends. Grab your inner Santa, hop in the car, and get ready to feel the holiday spirit as you shop around the state for the most unique gifts of the season. Start planning your next overnight getaway to Indiana’s best shopping areas, local boutiques, special events, and one-of-a-kind gift shops. Since the day it opened around 18 months ago, fans of the hit HGTV show, “Good Bones,” have been flocking to Two Chicks District Co. on the south side of downtown Indianapolis. Owned by HGTV star Mina Starsiak Hawk, the home décor store in the Bates-Hendricks neighborhood carries everything from home furnishings and

gifts to Two Chicks branded merchandise like hoodies and tote bags. The charming shop even includes a bistro and wine bar where fans can grab lunch before browsing to their hearts’ content. “The most surprising aspect of owning the store has been the amount, and variety, of people that have come through our doors,” said Mina. “The fact that people have traveled from all over the country just to visit District Co. is absolutely amazing! It truly means so much to us.” It’s no wonder the store has become a destination. Since the show first aired in 2016, “Good Bones” has been an HGTV fan favorite. Episodes of the show follow Mina and her mom, Karen E. Laine, on their home renovation adventures in the up-and-coming Bates-Hendricks district and the trendy Fountain Square neighborhood, where mother and daughter both live (next door to each other). The two founded their company, Two Chicks and a Hammer, shortly after Mina graduated from Indiana University in 2007. Karen has since retired as a founder, but she still makes appearances on the show. “After I graduated from college, I wasn’t really sure what career I truly wanted to pursue,” Mina explained. “I knew that I didn’t want a desk job,

and that I wanted something that didn’t limit my creativity. I spent time working as a waitress, until we began renovating homes full time.” When Mina bought a house that needed a lot of love, the pair set to work renovating it, learning the ropes as they went along and, in the process, discovering their true passion. “It just eventually grew into so much more. We began to revitalize more homes in our own neighborhood, and in time, it grew into our own dream business,” explained Mina. In addition to her role as an HGTV star and entrepreneur, Mina is a hard-working mom of two. She and her husband, Steve, are parents to a 1-year-old daughter, Charlotte, and a 3-year-old son, Jack, who make occasional “guest appearances” on the show.

For a unique gift that won’t break the bank, Mina suggests one of the hammer necklaces handmade by Twigs & Twine jewelry or a super comfy Two Chicks sweatshirt. For a “splurge” gift, the shop carries several stunning chandeliers that will wow even the most difficult-to-please recipient. And if all this isn’t enough, Mina decided to add one more title to her resume this year: children’s author. Her book, “Built Together,” which was released in February, celebrates the uniqueness of nontraditional families. You can purchase a copy for yourself or someone on your Christmas list at the store. Speaking of family, Mina said she has fond childhood memories of celebrating the holidays with a 17-foot tree and giant stockings to match.

Now as she creates new holiday traditions with her own family, one of her favorites is a “very competitive” gingerbread house making contest that she hosts every year. Just north of Indy in nearby Carmel, combine your shopping with an authentic German experience at the Christkindlmarkt, back after taking a year off due to the pandemic.

Christmas celebrations begin earlier in November with the Huntingburg Christmas Stroll, Nov. 11- 14, where visitors are invited to stroll Huntingburg’s 4th Street and experience the joys of a Victorian Christmas. “The decorated storefronts are filled with everything you need to complete your holiday shopping and decorating,” said Jessica Lindauer, sales and marketing manager of the Dubois County Visitors Center. Then on the evening of Nov. 19, the city of Ferdinand kicks off its Christkindlmarkt in front of the majestically domed Monastery Immaculate Conception. On Saturday & Sunday (Nov. 20-21) shoppers can browse 200 lavishly decorated booths spilling over with quality hand-created items.

Bellazo and the Welcome Center Gift Shop are both great places to find unique gifts for the holidays. PHOTO: Visit Wabash County

If the holiday ho-hos have hit you and every fiber of your being longs to shop, hum carols and celebrate, consider making Wabash your first stop of the season. Wrap up your gift-buying, have a bite to eat, and take in a spirit-lifting show. It’s the perfect way to kick off the happiest time of the year. You’ll be able to check off every name on your list at locally owned shops. To help you stay on your budget, they’ll be participating in Black Friday and Small Business Saturday activities with sales and special offers. Kick off your spree at Bellazo Revived Style. Here you’ll find vintage and secondhand clothing and so much more – art and accessories for the home, fragrances, local T-shirts, funny socks, books and games. Can’t decide? They’ll make up a “Goodie Bag” that takes into consideration the preferences of your recipient. The “Magic

Bag” is perfect for the person who is into crystals, chakras and white sage. The Wabash County Welcome Center and Gift Shop features over 30 local merchants and artisans from throughout Wabash County all in one place. Shop for locally-made jewelry, tees, candles, soaps, notecards and postcards, art, unique gifts, and so much more. The Eclectic Shoppe is also filled with surprises and delights that range from pottery and vintage jewelry to handcrafted handbags and original art. At the Wooden Ivy Boutique and Floral you’ll find hip jeans, sweaters, shoes and accessories as well as small gifts such as coffee mugs and inspirational key fobs. Still stumped? Enchant your loved one with a bouquet of flowers. Jojo’s Olfactory and Co. will decorate your home and brighten the homes of those on your list with sweetly scented candles. Or sign up the crafters you know for a class where they can make their own. Readers will love presents from Reading Room Books, one of the largest used bookstores in Indiana, and you’ll love browsing in the vintage rooms where they are displayed. Since Santa will probably bring the toys your favorite children want, why not make your offering unusual and adorable clothes from Tiny Threads Children’s Boutique? “Big sister and little sister” outfits will thrill families who have girls. Delight everyone in your group with the Jolly Trolley Tour on Saturday, Dec. 18, with tours taking off every half hour between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and lasting about an hour. Join Mrs. Claus on the trolley for story time as you travel to your destination about 15 minutes away for holiday fun. Enjoy a Charlie Brown-themed puppet show, crafts, cookies, a hot cocoa bar, live music and photo opportunities. Tickets, which go on sale Nov. 9, are $5 per person and free for those under 12 months.

While you’re thinking of others, remember to put time for yourself on the list. Take a break to stop in for a burger and a beer at Harry’s Old Kettle Pub & Grill or Market Street Grill. If Mexican food is your thing, take your choice of Habanero Grill and Cantina, Mi Pueblo or El Mezquite. Or grab a pizza at Harvey Hinklemeyers Pizza or Goodfella’s. You might choose to indulge yourself with a special dinner at Eugenia’s in the Honeywell Center before you take in a live

performance. Especially popular at this time of year is Cirque Dreams Holidaze for an experience that combines a Broadway-style musical with contemporary circus artistry. Performances are at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20. Or get tickets for the Christmas Madrigal Dinner Theater on Dec. 3 and 4. Tuesday, Dec. 5, enjoy a “Celtic Angels Christmas.” Another possibility is a movie or live entertainment at the recently renovated Eagles Theatre, which has now been restored to its original 1906 glory. Before you leave Wabash, stop by the Wine and Cheese Bar located inside the Charley Creek Inn for a wine flight and cheese board. It’s the perfect way to wind up a visit to Wabash. Veterans Day Salute As Veterans Day approaches, we salute a number of veteran-owned businesses in the hospitality industry that serve not only the public but also veteran causes. story by Elizabeth Granger

An American amber red ale called Thorstad is on tap at the Chesterton Brewery. Only at the Chesterton Brewery. It was created there and is named for U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Thomas P. Thorstad, a Chesterton native killed in action in 1983 in the Beirut barracks bombings. The brewery also has the Connor Brown. Bob Mitchell. Pruitt’s Porter. Tin Can Sailor. And the Sapper Six blonde ale, honoring six members of the Indiana National Guard 713th Engineer Company (aka Sappers), based out of Valparaiso, who were killed in 2012 in Afghanistan. They’re brewery owner Vern Brown’s way to honor vets who, he says, sacrificed more than he did. “When I got out of the Marine Corps, I had all my limbs. I’m as mentally sound as when I went in. I don’t have PTSD. But a lot of others are not so fortunate.” “I needed a way to give back.” So the brewery donates a portion of its earnings to not-for-profit veterans 44

charities. This fall Brown expanded his scope when his Duneland Distillery opened to the public. In South Bend, Indiana Whiskey Company. In Indianapolis, Hotel Tango. Veteran-owned. Serving the public. And contributing to veterans’ causes. In Anderson it’s about ice cream, downtown, at the Dapper Cat Café. It’s owned and operated by Jeffrey Chatman, a member of the Indiana National Guard, and his wife Jerrica. “To us a Dapper Cat is a clean, snazzy person,” Jerrica says. “I think Jeffrey is the Dapper Cat, although he hasn’t admitted to it. Our love for old vinyls, clothing, and pictures ties into the name. It’s also family comedy for us because

we’re actually dog lovers.” The café serves sandwiches, wraps, salads and drinks. But its forte is ice cream. “Because it translates to happiness,” Jeffrey says. “We’re able to deal with great attitudes. No one comes in upset, and no one leaves upset.” Flavors include black cherry, rhubarb crumble, blue moon, exhausted parent (a bourbon-spiced espresso). A flavor called “this sh** just got serious” is the No. 1 seller. And for the ice cream purists, there’s always vanilla. They take an ice cream push cart out into the community to serve at events. “The ice cream is our baby, but we also do catering,” Jerrica says. In Elwood, the POW/MIA missing man table is set 24/7 at The Tin Plate restaurant. The candle is lit at 6 o’clock every evening. But the guest never comes. He’s still missing, or he’s already gone. “The table has been there since Day one of operation,” says owner Patrick Rice. “We do not want the POWs/MIAs forgotten. It’s a nice teaching moment for kids.” While Rice himself is not a veteran, his father and grandfather are. But trumpet

lessons in grade school led to Rice’s membership in the world champion Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps during high school. He’s now a member of Bugles Across America and continues to play “Taps” at local military funerals. So far, more than 400. Every Veterans Day, at 11:11 a.m., everything at the restaurant stops while Rice plays “Taps” on the porch outside. Every veteran who goes to the restaurant that day receives a free meal. For Air Force veteran Patty Frensemeier, hospitality means lodging options. She and her husband own and operate Hills O’Brown Vacation Homes and Friends O’ Mine Campground and Cabins in Gnaw Bone. Since their work kept them close to home, about ten years ago they started camping less than a mile from their home. “People would laugh at us,” she says. “But we were getting to camp.” In May 2020 they bought the campground business. “I am rooted in this community,” says this Brown County native. “We’re all about giving back. I do a lot with our local veterans.” She’s active with groups that traveliN Holiday 2021

include the American Legion, VFW, Veterans Coalition, Honor Guard. She offers discounts for military personnel both active and veteran. Marine Corps veteran Ernie Rivas of Elkhart has always encouraged other veterans to learn about their benefits. He started Stand Down with a Heart to help them; it’s managed by Goodwill now. And Rivas is in transportation. His

wheels started turning when he saw a man walking down the road; it was 13 degrees below zero. “I gave him a ride to work,” Rivas says. “It was three miles; he had already walked two miles. So I started asking folks how people got to work.” He learned there was no way for many to get to jobs at factories in the region. Especially the homeless. Rivas bought a couple buses and started Reveille Transportation. In 2016 he partnered with the Center for the Homeless for a hiring event. “We filled up both buses.” Now he has four buses that get people to and from work at area manufacturing plants. The buses are also available for events. Jason Zaideman of Crown Point uses motorcycles as his vehicle to help. An Army veteran, he says he went back to his normal life when he got out of the Army, including “my hot rod things.”

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead— but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

When veteran suicides topped 22 a day, he says it became a calling. His “aha” moment. “I was upset that everybody was raising money to spread awareness about a problem we already know exists. I decided to start an organization based on the hands-on therapy that works for me, for my traumas.” In 2015 he founded Operation Combat Bikesaver “to recreate that camaraderie of veterans hanging around other veterans. We fix each other. We crawled through the same mud; we’re in good company.” The peer support group combines that camaraderie with hands-on work that started with motorcycles. “We hang out together and build things together,” Zaideman says. “Veterans have told me, ‘I probably wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for OCB.’ I’ve heard that 50 or 60 times or more. We’ve had no suicides in six years.”

Air Force veteran Patty Frensemeier, along with her husband Dave, owns Hills O’Brown Vacation Homes and Friends O’ Mine Campground and Cabins in southern Indiana. PHOTOs: Friends O’Mine Campground and Cabins

He continues: “It yanks me out of bed every morning. It’s not what I’m doing for one guy; it’s what that one guy is doing for more. I implore the public to look at an organization that is truly making an

impact and do what you can to help them.” Editor’s note: Check local city and/or tourism websites for Veterans’ Day events.

Botanical Gardens Grow Their Options Changes captivate visitors in every season story by Elizabeth Granger

Tom Lilly always knew he’d volunteer when he retired. And since he has “an affinity for things that grow,” he went to Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart. They readily took him on. At the end of his first day, he needed to see a chiropractor. “I don’t have the world’s best back,” he says. He thought his Wellfield volunteering plan was over, but then the director asked if he could mow. Six years later he was still mowing, every Tuesday and Thursday from April through October. “We had to work our vacations around mowing,” he says. “I was here a lot.” And then ankle problems ended his mowing. Not his relationship with Wellfield, however. He and his wife, Marianne, continue to volunteer. “Wellfield represents Elkhart at its best,” he says. Eric Garton agrees. He’s Wellfield’s executive director. He chose Elkhart as his next home when he was still at a botanic garden in California. The 36-acre Wellfield Gardens was founded in 2005 by Elkhart’s Rotary Club to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Rotary International. “The international

50

organization asked all of its clubs to do some type of project,” Garton says. “There are none greater than this one.” He continues: “Before this it was a pseudo park. It was very messy, with a lot of invasive species.” Now it’s a showcase. Its mantra: World Class and Home Grown. “Think of us like an art museum,” Garton says. “We have a collection of plants that we have provenance on, just like an art museum. We’ve got records. We know about our plants. We call ourself a living museum.” There’s also signage with common and scientific names. And sculptures designed to be in specific spots, because “there’s no

better backdrop to artistic expressions than nature.” Individual gardens present their individual personalities. The Children’s Garden is natural rather than contrived, so kids can explore and play. And the Sensory Garden, called the scratch and sniff garden, partners with a local food pantry. Last year, with Covid restrictions, outdoor venues flourished. Some changes made then to accommodate health guidelines proved to be so wise and workable that they’ll continue. Holiday Lights, in late November and December, will continue some of 2020’s changes that include timed tickets and one-way paths to follow. Enjoy fall and winter outdoors

INDIANAPOLIS 70

Cooler weather is a great time to enjoy the outdoors – less insects, less humidity and usually less people. Southern Indiana has many opportunities for hiking, biking, horse riding, photography, boating, camping, fishing and hunting. Fall brings beautiful colored leaves, bird migration and crisper air. In winter it can be easier to view birds and other wildlife in the forest once the leaves are gone. Unlike the packed parking lots of summer, recreation in winter often bring solitude and a sense of peace. Spending time outside in natural settings is good for the body and soul year-round. To encourage safe outdoor activity during these seasons, keep the following tips in mind as you plan your outings.

Hoosier National Forest offers many lakes for fishing and boating.

Peak fall foliage season can lead to crowds. Try to avoid the most heavily trafficked areas at the peak times –

weekends. If you can, seek out lesserknown sites, or visit during weekdays or mornings when crowds are lightest.

It’s so easy to call Bloomington home.

Navigating trails can be more challenging when they are covered in fallen leaves or snow. Getting a map in advance can help with this. There are also navigation apps for mobile devices that track your location and keep you on the right path. In fall, the weather can vary within a few hours. Dress in layers so you can peel them if you need to cool down, or add them if you

need to warm up. You’ll likely warm up as you engage in your activity. Even in winter, you’ll want the option of shedding layers as you warm up. A hat, ear warmers, or headband is especially important since most of our heat loss is through our head. When venturing out you’ll want to be aware of the various hunting seasons and keep yourself safe by wearing an article of bright colored clothing to be easily seen. The few challenges are well worth the experience. For more information on outdoor recreation in southern Indiana visit: https://www. visitbloomington.com/things-todo/outdoor-and-recreation/ clockwise: Horse riders enjoy a winter day on the trail at Hoosier National Forest. Winter Hiking Tips story by Scott Roberts photos by Indiana DNR

Enjoy the beauty and solitude of hiking Indiana State Parks this season

74

traveliN Holiday 2021

D

During the winter months some Hoosiers curl up by the fire, stay inside and wait for spring, but winter can be the perfect time to explore your favorite DNR property or discover a new one. Caitlin Lacy of Plainfield hiked McCormick’s Creek, Spring Mill, Turkey Run, and Shades state parks, and Cataract Falls State Recreation Area last winter and said she was amazed how different each looked in winter compared to rest of the year—especially when they were covered in snow.

A winter hike through Lincoln State Park in Spencer County.

“It’s like exploring an entirely new place,” she said. Tim Wells of Kendallville agreed. He said winter provides the best hiking he does the entire year because everything seems much quieter, and he loves the crunch of snow beneath his boots. He especially loves tackling Pokagon State Park’s Hell’s Point Challenge and any trail at Indiana Dunes State Park. While winter hiking offers beauty and solitude, you must be properly

prepared to stay safe and get the most out of it. Freezing temperatures and slippery conditions make staying warm and upright more challenging but following a few tips helps make for an enjoyable outing. Turkey Run interpretive naturalist Aaron Douglass said dressing in layers is essential. Start with a moisturewicking layer underneath because staying dry is the key to staying warm. If you get wet, you won’t feel warm again until you’re dry. Synthetic fibers work best. Potato Creek State Park interpretive naturalist Jessica Filer said layering should extend to your extremities. Carry extra socks and shoes, if possible, in case the first pairs get wet, and wear insulating gloves underneath regular gloves to keep your hands warm. When the body starts to conserve heat, it will focus on warming its core, so feet and hands feel cold

first. Be sure you wear warm boots that are waterproof. Gary McNickle of Martinsville has been winter hiking for several years and said lip balm and hand cream have really helped. He said his hands and lips crack easily in the dry, cold weather and having those help keep his hands and lips comfortable. Filer also encourages checking the weather forecast and knowing your limitations. Be sure you’re prepared if the forecast calls for snow and ice—or save your hike for another day. Having proper equipment is a great help. Some state parks have snowshoes for rent if there is enough snow on the ground. Call the property you’re planning to visit and see if they have some available. Turkey Run also rents out crampons, or spikes, which can help you get a grip in icy conditions. Many hikers also use hiking poles on uneven or icy terrain. traveliN Holiday 2021

Avoid walking on frozen bodies of water. It’s extremely difficult to tell how thick the ice is, and it can easily crack. If you go in, even if you manage to make it out, you will be at severe risk of hypothermia. Always have a form of communication. When hiking alone, Filer recommends telling someone else where you plan to be and when you plan to return. If you’re going to be out for an extended time, Filer suggests bringing a small stove or heating device for boiling tea or coffee. She does so and finds it helps keep her going on long hikes. Drift Restaurant

Opens at French Lick Wine & Spirits story by Glenda Winders

Headed to the French Lick area to play golf, luxuriate at a spa or try your luck at the casino? Then you’ll for sure want to make room on your itinerary for another spot – French Lick Winery and Spirits. You’ll also want to try out the new restaurant on its premises, Drift, which offers a “coastal Italian experience.” The winery, founded in 1995, is one of nine that make up the Uplands Wine Trail, a special designation for wineries in Indiana’s first American Viticulture Area (AVA). Its accompanying restaurant is brand-new. The winery started out in French Lick’s historic Beechwood Mansion, once the home of Charles Ed Ballard, a wealthy local entrepreneur in the early 20th century. “That first year they made 600 gallons of wine,” said Laurelin Doty, director of operations. “Last year we made 64,000. We’ve come a long way.” She joined the business when she married head winemaker Nick, who 82

worked alongside his parents, founders John and Kim, and brother Aaron – also a winemaker. The family grows some of their own grapes in a small vineyard on a farm that has been passed down through five generations of women in Kim’s family and was named a Hoosier Homestead farm in 2015.

“The wines we make from those grapes are tasting-room-only wines,” Laurelin said. “They are small batches from a small vineyard, so we don’t have enough to distribute.” She said they produce wines that range from semi-dry to semi-sweet but concentrate on the majority of their

customers who prefer sweeter wines. This year, however, Nick launched the drier Winemaker’s Cut label to commemorate their 25th anniversary, which they’re celebrating a year late because of the COVID pandemic. The blackberry batch tastes like eating a blackberry fresh off the vine, she said, and plans for next year’s cherry vintage are already underway. In 2005 the operation moved to

an old Kimball piano factory in West Baden. Now the tasting room is in front with wine production in the back — and a whole lot more is happening there, too. In 2016 they opened a distillery in the same building. Now they also grow wheat and corn on the family homestead land that they use in some of their distilling products. The heirloom corn, for example, goes into

small batches of heirloom bourbon, but products also range to brandy, vodka, gin and more. Tours of the distillery, which require reservations, are on offer Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and sometimes on Saturdays. They include a 20- to 30-minute tour that shows how the products are made and ends with a tasting of either wine or spirits. Guests get to take home a souvenir snifter. The Dotys had operated a restaurant, the Vintage Café, along with the winery but closed it so they could concentrate on wine and spirits production. Jarrid Davis and his partners, already owners of the West Baden Bagel Bistro and Stout’s Pub just a few blocks away, hadn’t been planning to open another restaurant, but the vacancy caused them to change their minds.

“We are able to highlight their products through pairings, and we keep them in mind as we create the menu. One of our focuses is making sure that we’re complementing what they do. The marriage with the French Lick Winery has been a wonderful thing.” “It was more about trying to preserve what the community already had,” Davis said. “The Vintage Café was one of the only more upscale options for locals, and part of the idea was also to preserve jobs in the valley. This is a small town. These aren’t a bunch of faceless people to us. These are people we know. It was a community decision for us.”

Spirits of French Lick motto is simple, “Respect the Grain”.

They hired Chef Brett Walters, whose experience runs deep in the area, and made a plan to continue the idea of an Italian restaurant but with some twists.

“We wanted to pay homage to what was there before,” Davis said, “but we didn’t want to just copy and paste what they had done. We wanted to create our own identity in the new space.” The result was a menu that offers several pasta options but also includes dishes found along the Italian coast, such as swordfish and quail. They use ingredients that local farmers bring to the Lost River Market in Paoli, and they change the menu seasonally, always working collaboratively with the winery. “We are able to highlight their products through pairings, and we keep them in mind as we create the menu,” Davis said. “One of our focuses is making sure that we’re complementing what they do. The marriage with the French Lick Winery has been a wonderful thing.”

In 2016, the Klingle-Doty family farm was given the Hoosier Homestead award by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.

Making Food Fun at Minnetrista Hands-On Food Preservation Workshops Celebrate the Ball Legacy Five brothers founded the Ball company in 1880 with a $200 loan from their Uncle George. In the beginning, they made wood-jacketed tin cans for products like paint and kerosene, but soon expanded their offerings to glass- and tin-jacketed containers. In 1884, the brothers began making glass home-canning jars, the product that established Ball as a household name. The brothers— Edmund, Frank, George, Lucius and William—moved the company

from Buffalo, New York, to Muncie, Indiana, in 1887 to take advantage of abundant natural gas reserves essential to making glass. Ball grew rapidly in the ensuing decade and has been in more than 45 businesses since its founding. Ball no longer manufactures the ubiquitous canning jars, but they’ve expanded and grown into a worldwide metal packaging company that makes billions of recyclable metal containers, and a unique

Minnetrista announces opening of new exhibit: FIX: Heartbreak and Hope Inside Our Opioid Crisis

The United States is in the middle of a crisis that impacts families and communities, and Indiana is at the epicenter: opioid use disorder. Minnetrista is inviting visitors in to talk about it through their powerful new exhibit—FIX: Heartbreak and Hope Inside Our Opioid Crisis now through May 1, 2022.

96

traveliN Holiday 2021

Their hope is to shift the conversation and break the stigma surrounding opioid use disorder. Visitors will investigate the science and biology behind opioid use disorder, our nation’s history with other health crises, hear personal stories from Hoosiers impacted by the opioid crisis, and explore the various roads to recovery. “One thing I really like about FIX is that there is a conscious effort to make a tough topic accessible in story, design and feel,” said Nalleli Guillen, Minnetrista’s associate director of exhibition and curation. “There’s a lot of shame involved around the idea of substance abuse, and it doesn’t have to be that way. Putting together an exhibit that is trying to help people learn and overcome – I

think that’s what museums should be doing.” Hands-on interactives allow families to explore the real science behind cravings or addictions. Visitors can go inside a giant fabric brain to learn about how opioids affect the brain and explore a quilt fort created by Indianapolis artist and person in recovery himself, Philip Campbell. Photos taken just for the exhibit by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Bill Foley will show what recovery can look like around the state. FIX was created at the Indiana State Museum. In 2020, the exhibit won the Best Practices award from the Association of Midwest Museums and an award from the organization Overdose Lifeline. For more information, visit www. minnetrista.net
