staycation 2020

Editor’s Letter Welcome to the first issue of Travel Indiana in 2020, our annual “Staycation” issue! This is the time of year we like to give our readers lots of trip itineraries, and new ideas, on how to plan your annual vacations around treasures found right here in Indiana.

Telling the Stories of Authentic Indiana

You’ll learn about “farm stays” where you can spend the night on an authentic Indiana farm, experience farm life firsthand, and, if you’re so inclined, even help with the chores.”

In this issue, you’ll read about great destinations to add to your “must-see” list. You’ll learn about “farm stays” where you can spend the night on an authentic Indiana farm, experience farm life firsthand, and, if you’re so inclined, even help with the chores. In our piece on celebrating Black History Month, you’ll learn why the Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site in Wayne County is considered the “Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad.” This issue also takes you to French Lick, where you’ll get two history lessons; one on Indiana’s Black Forest and its impact on the distillery business in southern Indiana, and the other on the French Lick Resort’s past as they celebrate their 175th anniversary. Our feature on Indiana movie locations takes you around the state, highlighting the locales you’ll recognize from big-name films; and you’ll also read about the Indiana agency responsible for putting our state on the big screen. Be sure and check out our regular sections for more trip ideas: Culinary, Outdoor, Brew/Wine/Distillery, Destination, Festivals, and more. And if you’re ready to find that authentic weekend getaway excursion, our website, travelindiana.com, is full of weekend getaways, trip giveaways, package deals and photo contests. You’ll discover the Best Outdoor Destinations, Top Family Fun Attractions, and much, much more.

The barn is at Heritage Farm near Flora; Tim Sheets is introducing his guests to the alpacas. Both Tim and his wife, Beth, had grown up on Hoosier farms, and when they spent their careers working in Indianapolis, their goal was to move to Beth’s family farm some day. When they did, their question became, “Now what do we want to do?” They did consider the traditional route with cows or sheep. “But I’m sort of a non-traditional person, so we investigated alternatives and discovered alpacas,” Tim says. “They were intriguing.” So in 2003 they bought their first one. Before bringing it home, however, they went out looking for a friend for it. They ended up with five. Now there are 50.

The unrecognizable humming, almost a cooing, is coming from the barn. When the door opens, several animals look out toward the daylight. They’re mostly off-white and a bit wooly like sheep, but with long necks and huge doe-like eyes partially hidden by thick bangs.

And although they’ve been at the Sheets’ farm for more than 15 years, the alpacas are still somewhat of an oddity. “We’d have open houses every fall and invite the public to come and see them,” Tim says. Soon they realized a lot of people wanted to come, from farther and farther away. So they’ve introduced “experiences” through Airbnb in a modern three-bedroom house on the

property, and in a renovated 1850s cabin with an outdoor kitchen that includes a pizza oven. RVs are welcome, as are tents. The Sheets offer a tree tent; think huge hammock with mesh sides and a top. A second level can be added so six or seven can sleep out in the woods. Guests meet not only the alpacas but also the flock of chickens. “The kids really like to collect eggs,” Tim says.

There’s a creek for summertime exploring, woods for hiking, a zipline. There’s a fire ring for s’mores, so popular that the Sheets’ grandchildren nicknamed three of the young alpacas Marshmallow, Graham Cracker, and Hershey. In winter there’s sledding. “The coolest thing is how this all came together,” Tim says. “We didn’t have any idea how popular this would be. We’ve booked over 250 nights in the past year.” And while some guests stay for multiple nights, others visit for just a few hours during the day. A friend’s daughter liked the alpacas, and the farm, so much that she got married there. Now Heritage Farm is a wedding venue. There’s also a small gift shop which features items containing alpaca fiber – socks, hats, sweaters, shawls, scarves, even stuffed animals. And yarn. A November Christmas festival featured 30 artists, including some Indiana

artisans, along with music, hot drinks, wine tasting, crafts, Santa, and a horse dressed up as a reindeer. They’re planning a summer wine tasting in the pasture, with the alpacas. “They’re curious animals, so if you sit still, they’ll come over to you,” Tim says. Alpacas are also featured at Heavenly Acres Farm & Learning Center in Thorntown. They buddy up with a menagerie that includes goats, sheep, donkeys, miniature horses, a mule, a bunny, dogs, cats, ducks, and lots and lots of chickens. More than 50 chickens of 20 different breeds that lay eggs in different colors. Forrest and Jennifer Bopp offer day and evening tours as well as overnights. Forrest’s enthusiasm belies his past as a city boy growing up on Indy’s east side. No farm experience here. None at all. But Jennifer’s youth on a small farm caught his attention, and the next thing she knew, the two were owners of a

farm just outside Thorntown. “We wanted a piece of property that was country-ish,” Forrest says. And he wanted a few animals. Nothing too big, insisted Jennifer. “How about alpacas?” he responded. “They’re just like sheep with longer necks.” She acquiesced. And then he said they needed a guard dog. “A dog?” she shot back, since they already had three. “Why do we need another dog? Why do we need more animals? What is going on here?” “Well, how about a llama?” “They’re aggressive. I don’t want anything aggressive.” He suggested a donkey. “They’re noisy,” she countered. “And stubborn.” “They are not stubborn,” he insisted. “They’re smart.” “We’ll think about it,” she agreed. traveliN Staycation 2020

And then he found a 7-month-old male donkey. “This is rare, to find a young one,” he said. “Trainable.” “I feel like you’re pulling my leg,” she said. “Besides, we don’t know what we’re doing. Why would we get one we have to train?” “Let’s just go look at it,” he said. And she thought: “My kids pulled that on me, multiple times.” But they went to look at the donkey. One donkey. And ended up buying two. That same man also had alpacas. “Let’s go look,” Forrest said. So they bought four alpacas, which would join the five they’d already agreed to buy from someone in Kentucky. And then a friend from Tennessee called and said she had miniature horses. “I was super excited,” Jennifer says. “I had always wanted some.” So she said to Forrest: “Let’s just go look at them.” And now Heavenly Acres is open to the public. “God gave us this,” Jennifer says. “When we got here, we fell in love with the place. We’re just trying to share what God gave us.” Forrest is downright giddy about their country life and wants to share it with

“We’re still learning as we go,” Forrest says. Jennifer adds, “The neighbors are impressed we’re still here.” Near Wakarusa, Will and Jewel Johnson open their farm home to weekend stays. This is Indiana’s Amish country with horse-drawn carriages, women in bonnets and long skirts, men in suspenders and broad-brimmed hats. Where electricity is prohibited and farm plowing is done by horse. Typically. But the Johnsons are part of a small Brethren community which differs from the Amish lifestyle most “English” (those who are not Amish) are familiar with. The Johnsons’ branch drives cars and has electricity, although the Johnsons choose not to have television or WiFi. “We describe our life as a celebration of simplicity,” Will says. “We still value the ideals and

Basically what we really like to do.” “And you come and join us,” Jewel adds. The Johnsons’ lifestyle and religious practices, in addition to the farm experience, lead to stimulating discussions with their guests who find the farm stay, titled “Simple Living in Indiana Amish Country,” on Airbnb, as an “Airbnb Adventure.” A recent Friday evening saw Jewel kneading masa corn flour and water,

forming a yellow dough a little coarser and stickier than pie crust. She rolled it into balls which, if they were cookie dough, would have made good-sized cookies. Her daughters, Kate (who’s 10) and Jane (who’s 8), and one of their guests took turns flattening each ball in a tortilla press. Behind them, at the wood stove, Will Johnson, son Frank (who’s 5) and the other guest waited. Small cast iron skillets, about six inches in diameter and the same size as a mini tortilla, were already oiled and heated. Within minutes the tortillas were done. The kitchen camaraderie included not only information about the food preparation but also riddles and knockknock jokes and talk of favorite book

Guests are invited to help gather the eggs, harvest the vegetables, prepare the meals. Favorites include omelets, cinnamon buns, jam, pies. While the kitchen does have an electric range, the wood stove is often the cooks’ choice. There’s biking, hiking, woodworking (making cutting boards is a big request). Even hanging clothes on the line outside to dry. Guests may attend Sunday church service with the Johnson family or relax at the farm or perhaps explore neighboring towns. This mini-farm is less than ten minutes from downtown Nashville, and it’s where you can get up close and personal with more than 15 miniature donkeys. guest house with four bedrooms and three full bathrooms welcomes guests for a minimum two-day stay. They’re encouraged to wander out to the fields to see the chickens, cows and pigs enjoying their day, or to curl up and relax in front of the Vermont casting wood-burning stove with their favorite book. Food pre-ordered is waiting in the refrigerator. In Center Point, an overnight stay (for adults only) centers on big cats. Lions, tigers, leopards and more – in all, 160 big cats. Founded in 1991, the Exotic Feline Rescue Center allows day visitors to see about 50 cats, but overnight guests can see them all. especially if it means they earn a treat. Other Hoosier sites invite guests to visit and meet their animals during regular and, sometimes, special hours, but they do not offer related overnights. French Lick Resort’s “Horse Sense” program, available April-October, offers a 30-minute class about horses with a meet-and-greet with a horse. It’s followed by a trail ride. Wolves are the big attraction at the education/research facility Wolf Park in Battle Ground, but there are also coyotes, foxes and bison. Operations coordinator

Kimber Hendrix says the animals are socialized so they enjoy being around people – but they are fenced in. Regular tours are in the afternoons. Popular special tours include cookout howl nights, Wolf Park after hours, Easter egg hunt, watermelon party, pancake breakfasts. “If you’ve been once, you haven’t seen it all,” Hendrix says. Black Pine Animal Sanctuary in Albion is home to nearly 100 nondomestic animals that include wildcats, bears, canines, reptiles, birds and more that are the products of the

exotic wildlife trade. Some were former pets; some were abandoned; some wereconfiscated. They will live out their lives at this professional animal retirement center. River Jordan Camel Dairy in Milford has camels. Owners Luke and Amber Blakeslee say it started “as a simple desire to raise camels to ride (and mow the grass).” Open Farm Day tours are offered one Saturday each month during warm weather. Additional opportunities to meet the camels are offered throughout the year. The dairy uses camel milk to make soaps and lotions. The bottom line: Indiana has options

to get away from it all to experience something new. Meet the animals, share stories, make new friends – all close to home during a staycation.

Your three day ADVENTURE awaits in Pulaski County friday

Find that perfect campsite or rent a primitive cabin at Tippecanoe River State Park.

Hit the trails for your morning cardio, make a campfire breakfast, then head outfor adventure!

Start your day with a bike ride or brisk stroll down the Panhandle Pathway, a 23-mile paved walking and biking trail. The Pathway follows the old railbed of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

After you set up camp, you’ll want to take in the view from the fire tower, hike a trail or two, fish or relax at the campsite. Or if camping isn’t quite your thing, check into the Tortuga Inn Bed and Breakfast which is still located on the riverbank. Be sure to visit Sanders Foods in Winamac where you can get all your supplies for your relaxing getaway. Plus they have a great craft beer selection that won’t disappoint. Ease into the evening with a movie on the big screen at the historic Isis Theatre in Winamac.

Ready to get splattered? Visit Fort Knox Paintball, northwest Indiana’s premier themed paintball facility, home to 13 themed playing fields, plus laser tag for all of the fun with none of the mess! For lunch, it’s downtown Winamac. The facesized breaded tenderloin and selection of 100-plus beers at One-Eyed Jack’s are fan favorites, while Sublime Subs’ fresh sandwiches and salads will refuel you for a day of adventure. Next, off to Kersting’s Cycle Center & Museum in north-central Pulaski County to check out nearly 100 antique and otherwise historical motorcycles from nine decades and eight countries. You won’t be far from the Peaceable Primate Sanctuary (but call in advance if you want to visit our resident baboons)! Swing by Tippy’s for pizza and a cold draught, or check out Indiana’s oldest family-owned tavern, Bill & Babe’s (21 and over only), known for its greasy cheeseburgers and amazing fried fish.

22

traveliN Staycation 2020

Just south of Winamac, Kostas provides ample portions of standard breakfast fare but also offers a Greek twist to the menu. Canoe, kayak, or float on the Tippecanoe River. It’s named one of the top 5 most biologically important rivers in North America, based on the cleanliness of its water. Let the kiddos run off that last bit of energy at the Winamac Town Park. It’s surrounded on 3 sides by the river and has an awesome playground that features a “swinging bridge” called the Memorial Suspension Bridge.

Year-round, a staycation in Hancock County means you’ll enjoy touring a real organic farm, shopping in unique boutiques along small town main streets, stepping back in time at historical sites, indulging at locally-owned and regionally popular restaurants, picking farm fresh produce, taking in a performance at one of several performing arts venues, spending the day at one of many festivals, and of course, visiting the home of famous author James Whitcomb Riley. Two of the area’s most popular farm experiences are Tyner Pond Farm and Tuttle’s Orchard. At Tyner Pond Farm, you can walk the fields, meet the animals, and see for yourself how sustainable agriculture makes such a difference not only to our animals, but to the quality of your food. Book their Farmhouse for a unique lodging experience! Tuttle’s Orchard is a favorite Indiana apple orchard featuring apple picking, pumpkin patch, corn maze, kid’s farm play area, and farm store. You may also choose to take a ride on the train at Lark Ranch while picking out your pumpkin or going through their corn maze. Whether shopping for yourself or someone else, the towns of Hancock County offer unique experiences offering everything from one-of-a-kind gifts to boutique clothing. You can even make a stop at Cynthia’s Hallmark, the world’s largest Hallmark store! Historical sites and museums can be found throughout the area, including the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum, where the beloved “Hoosier Poet” and creator of such characters as “Little Orphant Annie” spent his boyhood years. There’s also the Hancock County Historical Society’s Old Log Jail and Chapel in the Park Museums, the New Palestine Museum, the Shirley Historical Society’s Dr. Wilson’s Office Museum, and the Shirley Depot Museum. The Jane Ross Reeves Octagon House, one of only five octagon houses left in Indiana, is also a must see. If you are lover of the arts, Hancock County has so much to offer you. Theatre, visual arts, dance, music—there is something here for every taste. For visual arts, the Hancock County Arts Twenty North Gallery features local and regional art. For the performance arts, they take the stage at the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts and the Ten West Center for the Arts, where local theater productions of musicals, plays, dance performances, and concerts are frequently held. Festivals throughout the year add to the overall fun! Dining in Hancock County offers lots of choices, with locally-owned favorites like Foxgardin Kitchen & Ale, Taxman Brewing Company, Sunrise Bakery, Kinsey’s Italian Café, Carnegies, Tour of Italy and more. Overnight accommodations range from a modern hotel or motel, or the unique “at-home” comfort of a quaint bed and breakfast or farmhouse.

day 3 Shopping is on the itinerary for today, and you’ll start with fresh baked goods at Sunrise Bakery in Fortville. Browse the unique shops here, then head over to Greenfield, McCordsville , and Shirley for antiques, gifts, and great clothes. For an early dinner, drive back to Fortville to enjoy Foxgardin Kitchen and Ale (if you’re over 21), or Mama Nita’s Pizza in New Palestine.

“Everything would have been found in this area at the ‘time’ you’re having dinner,” says Conner Prairie director of public affairs Christine DeJoy. In addition to the food, there’s conversation with costumed interpreters – who unwaveringly remain in 1836 – as well as other guests. And there are parlor games. “Guests know they’ll have a great time, but they often don’t realize just how much fun it will be,” DeJoy says. Suppers are Wednesdays-Sundays through the middle of March. “I can’t think of anywhere else that does this like Conner Prairie does,” she adds. “This experience becomes more and more popular every year, so tickets get sold out quickly.” It’s the same for tickets for the farm-to-table dinners at The Farm at Prophetstown near Lafayette. They sell out quickly; The Farm keeps a waiting list. Dinners are made by local chef Lauren Reed, who is also the events and education coordinator at The Farm. They’re served in the reproduction of a 1920s Sears farmhouse April-October. It’s furnished with genuine antiques, not reproductions – even the china. “You are literally surrounded by the ‘20s,” says Leslie Martin-Conwell, recently-retired executive director of The Farm. “People really do feel like they’re going back in time.” Five-course meals utilize beef and pork raised at The Farm, along with vegetables from the large heirloom garden. Free heirloom seeds are available so diners can grow their own vegetables at home. The first comment from new participants is joy at being there. A common reaction: “I got in!” And then “they can’t believe the level of the food,” Martin-Conwell says. “They can look right out the window or go into the barn to see where their food came from.” 40

She continues, “People who come time and time again comment on the camaraderie. You’re mixed up with people you may not have met and you get to talking. It’s amazing the number of phone numbers that get exchanged.” There’s great anticipation of foods that are ripe at the time of the dinner. “We’re teaching them about seasonal eating,” Martin-Conwell says. “We are

meeting people’s ideal standards.” The event is such a success that diners often end up volunteering to work at future dinners. The farm-to-fork concept has always been big at Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville. It started as the state’s first organic dairy in 2003 and grew from there to include a farmstead restaurant, dairy bar, event spaces, and farm tours.

Five-course meals at the Farm at Prophetstown utilize beef and pork raised right on premises. PHOTO: Laura Hale

Seasonal chef dinners put guests in a farm setting away from the restaurant in locations not typically open to the public. Communications manager Lauren Bobbitt says the beach porch, overlooking the farm pond, is especially popular. “You can see the cows over the hill,” she says.

The chef talks about why he chose the menu items, often concentrating on what inspired him about the season. “We always prioritize local and seasonal,” Bobbitt adds. In addition, someone representing a winery or distillery is there to talk about the meal’s cocktail or wine choices. A huge farmhouse restaurant offers farm to fork meals at Fair Oaks Farms, the megafarm off I-65 between Lafayette and Chicago that tells the story of 21st century agriculture. Its food focus is on ingredients grown and harvested on its farms as well as additional farms in the region. At the Queen and I bed-andbreakfast in Crawfordsville, there’s some … well, … fowl business. Guinea hens typically greet guests – owner Isaac Hook calls them “the guard dogs” because everyone in the house knows

the instant a car drives onto the property. And with chickens and ducks and turkeys, all laying eggs, breakfast is about as fresh as you can get.

Arni Cohen opened the doors to the flagship restaurant in 1965 at Market Square Shopping Center in Lafayette. Originally seating a little over 100 people, within ten years Arni’s at Market Square was one of the largest restaurants in Indiana. The company is now owned by Arni’s two sons, Brad and Kurt Cohen. Brad describes his father as a “living legend” – “he was so great with people,” Brad says, explaining that growing up at Arni’s meant never meeting a stranger.

Arni had a philosophy: Serve good food at a reasonable price, by employees that treat customers with respect. In return, your business will succeed. Even more important was his approach to the community. He believed that if Arni’s took care of the community, the community will in turn take care of you. This philosophy has been a pretty successful one that has helped Arni’s become one of Indiana’s community restaurants and grow to 18 locations. “I learned so much about human nature, being kind and caring,” Kurt adds, “We are very proud to be associated with a restaurant that has such a positive image in our communities.” Now, for over a decade, Arni’s has been serving fresh and delicious food with a friendly smile. When you come to Arni’s you’re getting more than just

At Ghyslain Chocolatier, each chocolate and dessert are artfully constructed. PHOTO: Ghyslain Chocolatier

While we really don’t need a holiday to celebrate our favorite foods, we can use it as an excuse to overindulge in some of our favorite culinary delights. February boasts several calendarworthy celebrations—February 2 is National Tater Tot Day, February 9 is National Pizza Day, February 24 is National Tortilla Chip Day—but the most universally-recognized foodie holiday in February is, of course, Valentine’s Day, when nearly 58 million pounds of chocolate will be sold throughout the country. So, in the spirit of this upcoming holiday, we’re going to highlight the Indiana Foodways Alliance “Sweet

Temptations Trail,” one of 21 trails throughout Indiana sanctioned by this non-profit group of tourism and culinary professionals who serve to promote Indiana’s authentic food culture. The Sweet Temptations Trail has more than 40 stops throughout the state, and includes bakeries, donut shops, eateries that serve great desserts, and confectioneries who make some of the best chocolates found in the United States. One of those is Schimpff’s Confectionery in Jeffersonville which is one of the oldest, continuously operated family-owned candy businesses in the country. While they’re famous for their cinnamon Red Hots, their chocolate “turtles” are a popular item, especially for Valentine’s Day. At So Good Candies in Peru, you can purchase Cole Porter’s favorite fudge, which was originally developed by the Arnold family in the early 1900s. So Good started making the original fudge recipe in 2016, and has also brought back other Arnold family favorites like the Gold Brick candy bar and chocolate bark.

In Anderson, Good’s Candy Shop has been making candy since the 1940s. Today, they are one of the largest candy shops in Central Indiana. One step into their shop on West 53rd Street, and you’ll quickly see, and smell, why their chocolates are so popular. And for Valentine’s Day, they produce several specialty items, like chocolate suckers, milk chocolate cupids, and more. If you want a treat for your eyes as well as your taste buds, a must stop on the Sweet Temptations Trail is Ghyslain Chocolatier in Union City. Here, each chocolate and dessert is artfully created and the experience of eating these decadent confections is almost like popping a small masterpiece into your mouth.

The Indiana Glass Trail

Indiana Glass Trail

Connecting the state’s tradition and history of glass Photos courtesy of Indiana Glass TraiL Kokomo Opalescent Glass creates many specialized and one-of-a-kind items.

The Indiana Glass Trail is a showcase for talented Hoosier artisans who create works of glass art using various methods and skills that few possess. The Trail connects six counties in east central Indiana—Delaware, Hamilton, Howard, Jay, Kosciusko, and Madison—in which the tradition and history of glass arts can be experienced first-hand. Studios, galleries, factory tours, and museums, as well as glass-focused festivals and workshops are located throughout the communities along the Trail. Indiana’s glass history goes back to October 6, 1886, when a group of speculators drilling a well in Howard County discovered natural gas at around a depth of 900 feet. The 20-foot flame lit up the dark sky that night, and the next eight exploratory wells in the area were successful. By early 1887, several gas companies had formed and the Indiana Natural Gas Company, one of the largest, had more than 23,000 acres leased and 475 gas producing wells. News of the significant gas discoveries traveled quickly, and it was estimated that the gas would last for 200 to 300 years. That later was proved to be incorrect, 46

States from France and formed Henry Art Glass in New Rochelle, New York in 1883. Henry Art Glass made glass buttons, novelties, and opalescent glass rods. but Indiana’s legacy in glassmaking had been launched. The discovery of the Trenton Gas Field in east central Indiana in 1887 ushered in a golden era of industry for the state. Automobile, tin, glass and other manufacturing companies launched and boomed. By 1900, the ease in creating and fueling gas-fired furnaces saw myriad glass companies vying for business from Winchester and Richmond, to Gas City to Greensburg, Elwood and beyond. Indiana’s art glass community was launched with that first gas well discovered northwest of Kokomo in 1886. Charles Edward Henry, a glass chemist, immigrated to the United

art glass history was the shipment three days later – on November 16, 1888, the first shipment of sheet glass went to Louis Tiffany. It included 600 pounds of blue and white opalescent glass. Tiffany continued to be one of Henry’s customers, and in 1893 he purchased more than 10,000 pounds of glass from Opalescent Glass Works. Over the years, the company developed a reputation for product uniqueness, quality and customer satisfaction that was unsurpassed in the stained glass trade. In addition to L.C. Tiffany, industry giants such as J&R Lamb and LaFarge are among the prominent names appearing often on the company’s early sales ledger. to New York from a business trip to Chicago, he stopped in Kokomo. On April 27, 1888, the same day he arrived in Kokomo, he met with local officials about establishing a glass plant there. Within 24 hours an agreement with government officials was made and signed to provide Henry with a plant site and a natural gas supply. Within 30 days, Henry returned to Kokomo to purchase a home and to start building a glass production plant with a seven-pot furnace. Actual production started at Opalescent Glass Works’ new plant on November 13, 1888, and it has been in continuous operation at that location ever since. The primary product was sheet glass, but electric insulators were made for Edison General Electric with the excess glass. But most important to Indiana’s

and it creates custom mix batches for commercial customers. It still has, and mixes, many of the same “recipes” that originally established it as a premier glass manufacturer and continues to add new colors and textures to meet the demand of an ever-growing consumer audience. Its Hot Glass Studio was established in 1998 to produce a wide range of quality hand-blown and handcast glass using its world-famous Kokomo Opalescent Glass. There, the company’s glass blowers create one-of-a-kind and limited edition functional and sculptural glass objects and rondels. Today, Indiana’s highest-profile functional glassmaker is just outside Muncie, in Dunkirk. In January, 2013, Ardagh Group purchased Verallia, Saint-Gobain’s North American glass container operation, which includes a plant in Dunkirk. Ardagh was founded in Dublin in 1932 as the Irish Glass Bottle Company. It now operates in 26 countries, employs 22,000 people and controls approximately 50 percent of the North American glass container market. Not unlike the 1930s, when the volume of Ball jars produced in Muncie captured the world’s attention, today Ardagh’s Dunkirk operation produces three four million longneck beer bottles daily for AB InBev, parent company of Budweiser. Building on that heritage are dozens of Indiana glass artists, some in business for decades in and around the former Trenton Gas Field in east central Indiana. The Indiana Glass Trail links glassmakers in east central Indiana, as well as the area’s glass-focused galleries, museums, exhibits, festivals, tours, and workshops/classes. State park cabins blend modernity, outdoors for memorable stays

indiana state parks

story by Ethan Rice photos by Indiana Department of Natural Resources

While Indiana’s state park inns and campsites provide a great experience for staying overnight at state park properties, their cabins combine the amenities of inns with the autonomy of camping. Trine State Recreation Area is one of DNR’s newest properties.

I indiana state parks Some properties have recently added and improved cabins at several locations, including classics like McCormick’s Creek, Brown County and Pokagon. Even if you’ve stayed at these parks before, it might be time to experience them in a new way. McCormick’s Creek State Park’s Centennial Cabin opened in 2018. Jim, Glenn, and Maurie Luetkemeier provided much of the funding for the structure in honor of their parents, Louise and Oscar Luetkemeier. The family visited McCormick’s Creek many times over the years and saw the need for a cabin that could house a large family. The Centennial Cabin is the realization of that vision. Overlooking McCormick’s Cove Nature Preserve, the cabin sleeps eight people and measures 1,400 square feet. There are three bedrooms and two full 52

donated money to complete the interior, and the Indiana Hardwood Association donated materials for the building. Rentals start at $199, and the cabin is available year-round. There is a two-night minimum stay. Brown County State Park’s cabin suites at Abe Martin Lodge are another newer option. Sleeping

Sometimes, we’ll find guests curled up by the fireplace, wrapped up under blankets, and reading books.” Rentals for the cabin suites start at $189. They are available year-round. Brown County also has rustic cabins for those who want to be closer to nature. They are open April 1 to Oct. 31. For those looking to stay farther north, Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park in Steuben County has recently renovated its historic cabins. “Our guests have been ecstatic about the changes,” said Potawatomi general manager Emily Burris.

Those who want to be more rustic with their cooking can use the fire pits outside. Missy Myers, general manager at Abe Martin Lodge, said that since their opening, the suites have proven popular, drawing guests who want to enjoy the atmosphere of staying at the lodge while still maintaining the comfort of modern household conveniences. “We try to offer something for everyone,” Myers said. “The suites add a different level to that. It’s the best of both worlds.” Suite guests also have full access to the amenities of the main lodge, including its aquatic center. The park is best known for

From its activities on Lake James in the summer to the toboggan run in winter, there’s always a reason to visit. For a quieter retreat, try one of DNR’s newest properties, Trine State Recreation Area, which lies within a few miles of Pokagon, which manages the SRA. The property was 54

purchased by Ralph and Sheri Trine in 2006 and transferred to DNR in 2007. The property’s history started in the 1940s, when Ben and Helen Swenson, former managers of Potawatomi Inn, started their own resort called Wing Haven on the shores of nearby Gentian Lake. A naturalist and artist, Helen designed each of the 12 cabins in the theme of a different bird.

After Wing Haven closed in 1972, the property changed hands several times before a group of citizens approached the Trines about buying it. After the transfer to DNR, the state recreation area was created. DNR began to renovate the cabins with the help of many local partners, adding kitchenettes and outside grills. Trine has cabins to fit any size party. Two-person cabins start at $69, four-person cabins start at $75, and six-person cabins start at $79. This serene setting has many opportunities for recreation and relaxation, according to Nicky Ball, Trine and Pokagon’s interpretive naturalist. Kayaks, paddleboats, and electric boat rentals are available to enjoy Gentian Lake, though swimming is not allowed. Several multi-purpose trails are also available for hiking and biking, including a trail for mountain bikes, which are not permitted within Pokagon State Park. “At first, not many people knew about Trine,” Ball said. “We even had vacancies on holiday weekends. But now word is starting to catch on.” Despite its growing fame, Trine remains a quiet place to enjoy nature, with a variety of wildlife, butterflies, and wildflowers calling it home. Trine’s cabins are open seasonally, May to early October, but the Swenson Lodge Conference Center is open to reservations yearround. Equipped with a board room, kitchen, dining area and lounge, it hosts board meetings and retreats. Cabins can provide something for every occasion. Whether your family or group is large or small, state park properties likely have one to suit you.

Mike and Bonnie Triplett, Owners, Innkeepers story by Julie Campbell

I monticello

There’s a secret ingredient included in every breakfast that Lighthouse Lodge innkeeper Bonnie Triplett serves her guests. And it keeps them coming back year after year.

“I had a little guest who was five years old, and she said she didn’t like eggs,” Bonnie explained. “I told her, ‘My eggs are special. I cook with love. Have you ever tasted love in eggs?’” Needless to say, the little guest tried the eggs and loved them. The next year she returned with her family and gave a special message to Bonnie. “I remember you,” she said. “You cook with love! And I still eat eggs.” This is just one example of why guests return to the Lighthouse Lodge on Lake Shafer time and time again. “It’s the type of place you come to and you know you’re at home,” said Bonnie’s husband, Mike. Originally from Chicago, the Tripletts are no strangers to the hospitality industry. For 31

years, they owned Gabriel’s Pub, a popular restaurant and bar in Melrose Park, Illinois. Following a series of unexpected events, including their son developing terminal brain cancer, they retired from the restaurant business and became permanent residents of Monticello. “During the time we were caring for Michael, he gave us a different perspective on what the quality of life was. He continually told me, ‘You should open a bed and breakfast; you love to take care of people,’” Bonnie recalled. Following Michael’s passing, the couple decided to rezone their home on Lake Shafer and add several levels with seven deluxe suites, featuring private balconies overlooking the lake, cozy fireplaces, kitchenettes and all the

comforts of home. In addition to the suites, their property now includes five two-bedroom cottages – all within 100 feet of the lodge. A historic stone lighthouse built in the 1930s adds charm and ambience to the large park-like lawn complete with two fire pits, a sandy beach, children’s play area and a scenic dry creek bed that runs through the property. Mike and Bonnie are delightful hosts with a playful sense of humor and a practical sense of business. “We divided up the ‘Bs’ for our bed and breakfast: Bonnie’s ‘Bs’ are bed, breakfast, and banquets. My ‘Bs’ are boat, bonfire, and beverages,” said Mike with a laugh. “And we’re both good at what we do.” While Bonnie enjoys cooking for the guests and planning events, traveliN Staycation 2020

Mike loves taking folks out for excursions on the pontoon boat, which can be rented for cruises and tubing. With beautiful Lake Shafer as a backdrop, the lodge is a popular spot for weddings, hosting an average of 15 to 17 per year. “We have plenty of people that come because it’s on the water. We had one wedding where the couple got married on the sand, because they couldn’t afford to go to Hawaii,” Bonnie explained. “When you’ve got a water background and have the waves hitting the rocks –

if you’ve got your feet in the sand, it’s OK if its Monticello, Indiana!” The lodge also hosts several family reunions and corporate retreats each year. “If they rent all the rooms, they also get the use of the rec room,” said Mike. “They don’t have to go out for lunch or dinner – they can cook their own meals right here. Or we can do all-inclusive packages, too.” While the majority of their guests come from the Indianapolis or Chicago areas, the Tripletts also host guests from surrounding states

“My favorite part of owning the lodge is making people happy,” said Bonnie. “I love that every person who comes to our facility goes home with a memory of me. Whether it be the wedding that I helped with, the breakfast that they had, or their children that we taught how to ski. We’re not in the business of a bed and breakfast – we’re in the business of making memories.”

While you’re in Monticello, be sure to check out Indiana Beach (in season), a popular boardwalk style amusement and water park in the area. The park has come a long way since its beginnings in the 1920s and boasts six world famous roller coasters and a variety of other attractions, restaurants, live shows and, of course, the beach. The Madam Carroll on Lake Freeman is another sight to see and experience while in the area. The largest boat in Indiana offers dinner and entertainment cruises, and guests can also enjoy cocktails in the Luse Lounge while the boat is at dock Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. Another must-see site for transportation buffs is the Whistle Stop Restaurant and Monon Connection Museum in nearby Monon. The museum features over 6,000 pieces of railroad memorabilia inside the museum as well as several railroad cars, cabooses, and railroad crossing signs outdoors. enjoywhitecounty.com

Take a road trip to some of the most iconic story by Juliestate! Campbell movie locations in the Hoosier story by Julie Campbell

When you think of Indiana, visions of the silver screen probably don’t come to mind. Believe it or not, though, the Hoosier state has been the site of many major motion pictures over the years. Wouldn’t it be fun to watch some of these blockbusters, and then hop in the car to actually experience the movie locations with your family or friends? Follow us on a trip to some of the sites of the most iconic movies ever made in Indiana!

Hoosiers (Indianapolis, Knightstown)

Hoosier Gym: One of the most iconic film locations in Indiana is the Hoosier Gym in Knightstown, where scenes from the movie Hoosiers were shot. PHOTO: Indiana Office of Tourism Development

Combining one of our state’s favorite sports – basketball – with a great story and an all-star cast, the movie Hoosiers garnered two Academy Award nominations and won the hearts of hoops fans around the country. Loosely based on the true story of the Milan High School’s 1954 championship miracle win against Muncie Central, the movie, starring Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper, chronicles the journey of a small-town Indiana high school basketball team to the state championship game. traveliN Staycation 2020

In the fall of 1985, Anderson resident Wayne Bruzzese was an extra in the movie during the filming at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University. “I remember the producer acting like he was coming down court and taking a shot, and we were all supposed to cheer as if he made it,” explains Bruzzese. “The fieldhouse was almost empty, so they moved us in groups to make the section look packed out.” The historic Hoosier Gym in Knightstown also served as the filming location for the home court of the movie’s Hickory Huskers team. Each year the gym holds the Hoosiers Reunion All-Star Classic, highlighting the best high school players from around the state. Other scenes from the film were shot in Crawfordsville, Lebanon, New Richmond and Terhune. 70

Rudy (South Bend, Whiting)

Seven years later, Hoosiers director Angelo Pizzo began filming another iconic sports movie, this time about football. Rudy featured Sean Astin, who later went on to star in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as the lead character. Farmland resident Heather Leeper was 18 at the time of the filming and remembers her roommate waking her early in the morning to ask if she wanted to be an extra in the movie. “It was so cold that day. We got dressed in anything that looked like it could be from the 70s and headed over to the stadium (at Notre Dame). I still remember my lines – ‘Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!’ she said with a laugh. Besides the Notre Dame stadium, where the famous championship game was filmed, Corby’s Irish Pub was

home to the bar scenes in the movie. “Corby’s has a lot of nostalgic stuff from the movie,” said Lauren Stout of Visit South Bend. “It gets really busy during home games.” Scenes that include Rudy’s family home were filmed at 1718 E. 119th St. in Whiting, and several other scenes were filmed in various locations in South Bend or nearby cities.

A League of Their Own (Evansville, Huntingburg)

Filmed in Evansville and released in 1992, this star-studded flick tells the story of two sisters who joined the first female professional baseball league. The cast included acting legends Tom Hanks and Geena Davis as well as personalities like Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell.

A League of Their Own

Keeping with the sports theme, Blue Chips is yet another basketball movie filmed in Indiana featuring sports legends such as Larry Bird, Dick Vitale, Bob Knight and Shaquille O’Neil. Frankfort Senior High School and Frankfort Middle School’s gymnasiums were both featured in scenes from the movie.

Public Enemies (Crown Point, Chesterton)

Parts of this 2009 film starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale were filmed at The Old Sheriff’s House in Crown Point and at Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton. “The Old Sheriff’s House in Crown Point was the original building that Dillinger escaped from,” explained Erika Dahl of South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority. “The garage where he stole the car and made his escape also still exists, as a shop (not a garage). The Old Sheriff’s House is owned by a foundation, and they offer tours (seasonally).”

According to Ben Clement, who has served as the executive director for the Gary Office of Film and Television since its inception in 1997, the city has hosted literally hundreds of film and television productions. “While most major productions were attracted to Gary because of the unique architectural appeal of City Methodist Church, others have been drawn to heavy industrial locations like US Steel Gary Works and Gary Screw & Bolt, as well as abandoned historic sites like Union Station, Memorial Auditorium, The Palace Theatre, and Mercy Hospital,” said Clement. “Still other filmmakers have discovered our wonderful beachfront locations, the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, the tranquility of Marquette Park

Film Indiana:

The Force Behind the Filming

Indiana Movie Locations

I

Do you ever wonder how film companies decide on Indiana as “the place” to shoot all or part of their movies and projects? It’s not by accident. Behind the scenes is Film Indiana, whose primary objectives are to promote Indiana assets and destinations to prospective film makers and assist companies seeking production services in the state. They help bring projects to life, and assist in major aspects of the process. There are hundreds of film-friendly locations in the Hoosier state, and the group maintains a free database, FilmIndiana.com, that features locations and a list of production professionals. The power of film can enhance the perception of the state or city, support the economy, generate tourism, and uplift a community. That’s what the film Columbus did for that city. Kogonada, the director, was so captivated by a Columbus architecture tour he took that he made an entire movie about it. Now the City of Columbus features a tour of the filming locations. The film business is booming in Indiana. Pigasus Pictures released The Good Catholic, all filmed in Bloomington. Their next two films, Ms. White Light and The MisEducation of Bindu are currently making their way around the festival circuit. Producer, actor and

screenwriter Jordon Hodges has shot several films in the Michiana area. His latest, The Shade Shepard, is making its way around film festivals as well. “Smaller The Shade Shepard productions and independent films are happening every day across Indiana,” says Amy Howell, Director of Communications and Media Relations for the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, and Director of Film Indiana. “The NFL Network, Restaurant Impossible, Lakefront Bargain Hunters, Ghost Hunters, to name a few, filmed in Indiana in 2019.” Over 600 requests for information came in to Film Indiana, and the number continues to grow each year. Some place in the Hoosier State will be the next Columbus or provide the background for next Hoosiers or Rudy.

Indiana Celebrates Black History Month story by Amy Lynch

Indiana’s proud African-American heritage stretches back to the early 1800s, well before migrations of freedom seekers from the South traveled north before and during the Civil War era, settling in and populating major Hoosier cities like Indianapolis, Evansville and Fort Wayne. Today, the state proudly commemorates National Black History Month in February with a diverse lineup of attractions, events and celebrations taking place all throughout the state.

These are just a few of the locations where visitors can learn more about Indiana’s strong African-American culture and history:

INDIANAPOLIS Indiana Avenue, one of four diagonal spurs that radiate out from the core city center, has been a stronghold of black culture in Indianapolis since the early 1800s. Through the decades, African Americans have gathered here to socialize and to frequent a string of jazz clubs that attracted some of the most notable performers in the genre. After completing a major renovation project, the Madam Walker Legacy Center — the true centerpiece of this urban cultural district — is finally scheduled to reopen in early 2020 with an improved theater space, new innovative programming and multimedia tours. In addition, the 80

Indiana Historical Society pays its own tribute to the country’s first self-made female millionaire with the immersive “You Are There 1915: Madam C.J. Walker, Empowering Women” exhibit, on display now until January 2021. The Landmark for Peace Memorial at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on the near northside presents year-round opportunity for quiet reflection at the site where Robert F. Kennedy announced the civil rights leader’s assassination on April 4, 1968. The Indianapolis Public Library’s Center for Black Literature & Culture (CBLC) is dedicated to celebrating the vibrant and resilient heritage and triumphs of those born of African roots. This space is for all who are interested in exploring the rich heritage that has influenced nations across the globe.

WAYNE COUNTY A registered National Historic Landmark and Indiana State Museum site, the Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site in Fountain City has been called the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad, having sheltered and assisted more than 1,000 escaping slaves on their northward journeys to freedom prior to the Civil War. On Feb. 17, the location will host a President’s Day event at 10 a.m. featuring a special performance by a costumed Abraham Lincoln interpreter and tours of the property. Admission is $3 for members, $8 for nonmembers and includes a short film as part of the program.

Meltdown Winter

Ice Festival

Wayne County

I

The chainsaws and blowtorches fire up on January 23 2020, kicking off the 7th annual Meltdown Winter Ice Festival. Downtown Richmond becomes an unforgettable destination where exquisitely detailed carvings, thrilling ice competitions (ice fights), lively winter activities, and fun collide . . . and the best part is it’s entirely free. Watch the ice fly as world renowned ice artists, including Richmond’s own Master Ice Carver Andrew Thistlethwaite, use their polished skills and imagination to transform blocks of ice into awe-inspiring crystalline spectacles. Take in the magical creations along Main Street and Elstro Park Plaza. Meet the artists and pose with more than 35 dazzling sculptures. During the festival, over 22 tons of ice will be intricately designed and sculpted into works of art. Play games made of ice at the Interactive Play Zone — corn hole, ping pong, chess, and skee-ball are just some of the fun activities to be enjoyed. Other highlights include fire shows, Magical Snowflakes on Main Scavenger Hunt, Frozen Fairy Trail, Frosty Mug Pub Crawl, Lego competition, local food trucks, fireworks, and more. The most anticipated and crowd pleasing extravaganza during the event are the two exhilarating ice sculpting competitions between pro carvers and 1,200 lbs. of ice. The audience is the judge for this event as these artists go head to head to see who can create the best sculpture in the allotted time. These high-octane ice carving showdowns will take place Friday, 86

Jumping from one hay bale to another, wanting your attention, dancing around you, chewing on anything loose, as well as each other… that’s the joy and fun of playing with baby goats! It has long been shown that playing with baby goats increases oxytocin levels (the “bonding hormone”), increases dopamine levels (a neurotransmitter associated with rewards), decreases cortisol levels (the “stress hormone”), decreases blood pressure, and improves PTSD/ depression/anxiety treatment regimens. At Goat Milk Stuff in Scottsburg, Indiana, this therapy can reduce any new year anxiety or stress in a matter of moments. This family-owned, working farm will be home to 200-250 newborn kids (baby goats) during February and March. It’s the favorite time of year for the members of the Jonas family and their employees - even though they work around the clock on some days to care for these newborn and mama goats. Goat Milk Stuff loves sharing this amazing time of year and the joy of baby goats with you! Starting at just $5

per person, you and your family can be a part of the Baby Goat Experience at Goat Milk Stuff. Spend up to 25 minutes playing with a pen full of baby goats who are busy head butting each other, playing king of the hay bale, jumping around, and experiencing this new life to its fullest with you and your family! And after all that exercise, many of the baby goats will want to curl up and take a nap in your arms. There is nothing that can warm a heart faster than a baby goat’s innocence, joy, and fun! If that experience seems a little tame, then you and a guest can roll up your sleeves and shadow a member of the Jonas family during a Kidding Experience. You will help with bottle feedings, milking mama goats, catching and drying off the newborns during the birth process. This more in-depth experience does cost a little bit more, $100 per couple during the week and $150 per couple on a weekend, but it’s

very fulfilling and educational and it’s served up with a special farm-totable lunch or dinner. This can only be described as one of the coolest once-in-a-lifetime experiences you can enjoy. Goat Milk Stuff is located in Scottsburg, Indiana, just off I-65. Whether you want to play with the “kids” (www.goatmilkstuff.com/ BGE) or be part of a baby goat birth experience (www.goatmilkstuff.com/ kidding), reservations are required as times with the “kids” are limited. Visit the website for more details and to register you and your family for this incredible experience IN Scott County!

Celebrating 175 Years

I french lick springs hotel

story by Elizabeth Granger

I

It was all about the water, the “magical” mineral springs that could cure a myriad of ailments. It was the water which made the French Lick Springs Hotel enormously successful.

This year, with all it has to offer in fine dining, lodging, gaming, golfing, and more, the French Lick Springs Hotel will be celebrating its 175th anniversary. It all began in 1845, when Dr. William A. Bowles built the French Lick House. When he went off to fight in the Mexican War in 1846, he leased the hotel to a traveling patent medicine salesman named Dr. John A. Lane. When Bowles returned earlier than expected he would not renew the lease with Dr. Lane. The displaced-and displeased— Lane went up the road to the north to Mile Lick and built his own hotel, the West Baden Springs Hotel. Both touted the benefits of the water that could cure whatever ailed you. Lane eventually changed the name of his town to West Baden, after the famous springs in Weisbaden, Germany. Both hotels prospered after the railroad came to the valley in 1887, with one-upmanship the order of the day. “Competition like you wouldn’t believe,” says hotel historian Jeff Lane.

Bought by former Indianapolis mayor Thomas Taggart in 1901 along with three partners, the French Lick Springs Hotel was expanded with lavish furnishings and two golf courses. The ambience was luxurious, the service impeccable, the amenities many. And to strengthen the lure of coming to the valley, there was gambling. Although outlawed in Indiana in 1851, it flourished quite openly. The Valley was likened to Monte Carlo and, later to Las Vegas. This playground for the rich and famous had as many as 20 hotels and rooming houses and nine named casinos. After the Stock Market crash, French Lick Springs Hotel turned its attention to the convention business. It proved successful, for a while. But gambling came to a halt in 1949, and a series of owners attempted a variety of renovations that pretty much failed. By the advent of the 21st century the future of the hotel was in question. And then, a major turnaround. Gaming was legalized in 2003, and

a casino was built at the French Lick site. That, and the neverwaning interest of preservationists Bill and Gayle Cook, saved both hotels. Historic Facts on French Lick Resort’s “Younger” Neighbor, West Baden Springs Hotel By Elizabeth Granger West Baden Springs Hotel, bought by Lee Sinclair in 1888, eventually had 500 rooms, a double-decker bicycle and ponycart track, an opera house, and a casino. Sinclair even built a Catholic Church so his guests wouldn’t go to French Lick for Mass on Sunday. When fire destroyed Sinclair’s hotel in 1901, he vowed to build again, but to build so it wouldn’t burn. A luxuriant hotel in Germany had caught his eye years earlier, and he saw the fire as a chance to make his dream of an American version come true. Within one year. And on the one-year anniversary of the fire, Sinclair moved into his apartment in the hotel. It was considered the most impressive hotel in the country. Most impressive of all was the domed atrium, at the time the largest free-standing dome in the world – 110 feet in height, 200 feet in diameter, 600 feet in circumference. The hotel offered golf, horseback riding, bowling, billiards, swimming, baseball, hiking, biking. It had a barbershop, beauty salon, bank and stock brokerage. In addition to live theater, entertainment included movies, auto shows, even circuses under the dome. It was the most expensive resort in America.

98

“So what did that mean?” tour guide Gordon Spelbring Historic post card from Wes asks. “Jamt Baden Springs Hotel, onc e called the “Carlsbad of Am erica.” PHOTO: French Lick packed from Resort Day 1.” When the Stock Market crashed in 1929, so did West Baden. Owner Ed Ballard, who’d bought the property in 1923, tried to keep the hotel open, but in 1932 he reportedly had just one guest. In 1934 he sold the property to the Jesuits for $1. For 30 years it served as a seminary. Close to two decades as a college specializing in hotel and restaurant management followed. In 1983 the building closed its doors; vandals destroyed much of the property. In 1991 a portion of the outer wall, from the roof to the first floor, collapsed. Thanks to the preservation efforts of Bill and Gayle Cook, West Baden Springs Hotel, like its sister property, French Lick Springs Hotel, has been returned to its original opulence. And its free-standing dome is once again an incredible sight to see.

The Restored Eskenazi Museum of Art is World-Class

Eskenazi Museum of Art

story by Cathy Shouse

If one picture is worth a thousand words, then the art, objects and architecture of the newly-restored Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University in Bloomington ought to take many sentences to describe. But Tony Moravec has latched on to just one word: spectacular. Visitors experience the museum’s seven newly renovated galleries during reopening. Photo: Eric Rudd, Indiana University

Moravec should know. The Columbus business man and his wife, along with numerous individuals and organizations involved in the project, have invested their time, money and energy for more than a decade to see their vision come to fruition. They traveled in teams to places from Chicago, Illinois to Venice, Italy, and countless places in between. Museum and cathedral visits ensued. Conversations took place. All for the purpose of gathering the best of the best and bringing it back to our state. Plus, the doors are now opened to the public free of charge. “I would say it’s one of the top museums in the country today, because of the restoration and the collections it holds,” Moravec said. “We’ve involved world class architects 126

traveliN Staycation 2020

like I.M. Pei. The collection is magnificent. Jewelry collections, book collections . . . . There are surprises at every turn. Paintings, drawings, pottery…” Moravec first was invited on board for his business talents and was an admitted art novice. Along the way, he became so drawn to art that he started his own notable collection, with an emphasis on the Venetian master Domenico Tiepolo, whose works are also in the IU museum. He’s also particularly interested in works of Bible stories. Moravec’s influence helped the museum get on track for a bright future. It’s on the way to surpassing its fundraising campaign goal of $60

The restored museum is a gift to the state and beyond. The act of putting the restoration together has changed those involved, and they are passionate about sharing their discoveries with visitors. Whether in town for an hour or for a couple of days, they feel a visit will be time well spent. Details about the museum’s extensive offerings are all online at www.artmuseum.indiana.edu. while on an Alaskan cruise with his large family. He’s hopeful museum visitors’ lives will be changed just as his has been. When Moravec and his wife Rhonda attended the museum’s reopening, another word came to mind: gratitude. Their names are on an approximately 1,500 square-foot gallery featuring Works on Paper. The papers in the exhibit are rotated in and out because they are sensitive to light. “With the help of the museum’s director David Brenneman, former director Heidi M. Gealt, and current board members such as Luzetta & Del Newkirk, Kimberly & John Simpson, Martha & David Moore, Patrick & Jane Martin, past board member, Jane Fortune and many others, Eskenazi Museum of Art is one of the finest university museums in America,” Moravec says.

million. Moravec’s life has been so enriched by working on the project that in conversation, he’s clearly on fire with enthusiasm for restoration, funding student scholarships, and delving into art as a creativity starter. In the pharmaceutical industry, he’s a founder of Applied Laboratories, Inc. and president of Blairex Laboratories, Inc. To some degree, he credits forays into becoming a principal of Upland Brewing Company, a growing craft beer venture, as well as his approach to owning Zaharako’s Ice Cream Parlor and Museum in Columbus. “I grew up very humbly, one of ten children,” he said. “We were lucky to have our basic needs met.” So coming to art later in life has been important to him. He’s a bit star struck as he remembers buying some important works through successful bids he made in the middle of the night

programs and spotlight the museum as a place of social, cultural, and artistic exploration. Unique to the museum is an art therapist, who offers 90-minute sessions in an open studio format. One goal is to help Hoosiers in rural areas experience art. “We’ve had a great response,” said Kristin Londergan, marketing and communication coordinator for the museum. “We have 45,000 objects in our collection! Not all of these are on display, but we do have seven galleries of art here at the museum. We also have new study and object viewing rooms where you can request to see art in storage.” All of this reflects Moravec’s intention of giving back to the state he calls home. “A philosophy of mine is leaving something of value for future generations,” he said.

Your first stop in planning a wonderful wines staycation should be IndianaWines.org, the website of the Purdue Wine Grape Team, which has been responsible for guiding the fortunes of the state’s wine industry since 1991 from its headquarters on the Purdue University West Lafayette campus. Its website provides a wealth of consumer information including listings of the state’s wineries and tasting rooms arranged geographically: Northern Indiana, Central Indiana, South Central Indiana and Southern Indiana. Choose the area of the state you’d like to travel, then take a look at the wineries in your selected area. Clicking on the winery name links you directly to that winery’s website.

Nearly every winery offers special tasting events, concerts, art exhibitions, and holiday celebrations, depending upon the season. Some are extensive agritourism locations; others extend hospitality in the form of on-site bed & breakfast accommodations, perfect for the multi-day staycation. On the website you’ll find details about special events and offerings at individual wineries, along with all the basics (address, driving directions, hours of operation, etc.). Throughout the year, nine wine trails beckon you to explore the many delights offered by Indiana’s wineries and tasting rooms. Included are the South Shore Wine Trail (11 wineries in northwest and east-central Indiana); Hoosier Wine Trail (five wineries situated along I-64

in southern Indiana); Indiana Uplands Wine Trail (nine wineries in central and southern Indiana); Cardinal Flight Wine Trail (three wineries in metro Indianapolis); Indiana Wine Trail (seven wineries in the historic winemaking region of southeast Indiana); Indy Wine Trail (five wineries in the Indianapolis area); State Line Wine Trail (five wineries along the Indiana/Illinois border); W.I.N.E. Reclaiming Hoosier distilling history:

The all-but-forgotten story of

Indiana’s Black Forest story by Elizabeth Granger

This is a tale of a forest that really wasn’t, distilleries that aren’t, and a master storyteller disguised as a distiller. All in all, a captivating history as American as apple … ah, brandy.

This is about the Spirits of French Lick, a relatively new distillery that grew out of the success of the French Lick Winery (which is actually in West Baden Springs). traveliN Staycation 2020

It was born just four years ago. Officially, at least. But this narrative is more than 200 years in the making, if you limit it to America. And Alan Bishop—the distillery’s master distiller and well-known Hoosier historian—knows the score. It’s part of his DNA. Bishop was/is/always will be a Hoosier from southern Indiana. “Notice how people from here never say they’re from Indiana?” he asks. “It’s always southern Indiana.” Said with pride. And this particular tale is all about liquor. “My family has been involved in distilling, both legally and illegally, in

both Indiana and Kentucky,” Bishop says. “The still was just another farm tool. When I was 15, my dad and grandfather gave me a 10-gallon still, but they did not teach me how to make liquor.” That was on the family’s tobacco farm. Bishop, an enterprising soul even then, turned part of it into an organic produce farm. “Nobody cared,” he confesses. “I was trying to sell produce in a place where everyone grew their own.” But the endeavor got him into grain breeding and fruit trees. Remember: A distillery is an agricultural business. Fast forward a couple decades.

Bishop was working at a distillery in Kentucky when the call came. The call that just about everyone hopes for. Out of the blue, folks in West Baden Springs – on the right side of the river, Bishop says – wanted him to help them add a distillery to their winery. They’ve started small and have no intention of copying the big guys. “We understand the market,” Bishop says. “If we were doing what the big distillers are doing, we won’t make it. So we have to differentiate what we’re doing.” “We have to be different; we’re in bourbon’s back yard.” So the Spirits of French Lick

uses the process of double-pot-still distillation and is the largest pot-still distillery in the state. And it pays close attention to the ingredients. “Respect the grain,” the motto says. “Grain has terroir, just like grapes do,” Bishop says. The wheat and corn are cultivated on their Hoosier Homestead-designated farm; other ingredients are sourced locally as much as possible. Bishop, ever the grain breeder, created a hybrid strain of heirloom corn used in the Spirits’ estate bourbon. The distillery focuses on four products: bourbon, brandy, botanical spirits, and American whiskey. Bishop says his favorite product to make is a botanical spirit. But he has two favorites to drink. One is a four-

“I grew up in a family that made a lot of apple brandy. I would rather have well-made apple brandy than anything else. It’s become Spirits’ signature drink. Southern Indiana has a long and deep history of apple brandy production. It’s a big deal.” — Alan Bishop, Master Distiller

grain bourbon using corn, wheat, oats and caramel malt. “That was the first recipe I came up with at home and I took back to my dad and my grandpa, and that they liked,” he says. His other favorite is the rest of this story. “I grew up in a family that made a lot of apple brandy,” Bishop says. “I would rather have well-made apple brandy than anything else.” It’s become Spirits’ signature drink. “Southern Indiana has a long and deep history of apple brandy production,” Bishop adds. “It’s a big deal.” Seems the settlers who came to the area were from the Black Forest region of Germany, where

brandy was popular. Especially apple brandy. So they planted apple trees in their new home. Lots and lots of apple trees. Historian Bishop says that by 1855, six southern Indiana counties – Washington, Lawrence, Crawford, Harrison, Perry, and Orange counties – each had more than 150,000 apple trees. They were grown specifically for apple mash brandy. The region became known as the Black Forest of southern Indiana, although it was actually an apple orchard. The area included more than a fair number of distilleries. Between 1855 and 1914, Bishop says, at least 155 documented legal distilleries (although not all at one time) were traveliN Staycation 2020

making apple brandy in the six southern Indiana counties. They were producing more apple brandy than anywhere else in the world. That brandy was considered the highest quality apple brandy anywhere. And then came excise taxes, and a blight, and temperance, and Prohibition. Most distilleries were forced out of business. And because laws mandated the destruction of not only equipment but also crops that went to making alcohol, the apple orchards were burned. Enter Bishop. “Apple brandy runs pretty deep in my blood,” he says simply. So he’s making apple brandy. His award-winning Old Clifty Hoosier apple brandy is available to purchase at Spirits of French Lick Distillery. It’s also

distributed throughout Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri. It’s made from Michigan apples, but the plan is to increase the number of apple trees in Indiana – Bishop’s been busy planting them already – until apple brandy will again be from apple trees in the Hoosier state. Other award-winning options include the Lee W. Sinclair 4 Grain Bourbon, their rum, vodka, gin, aquavit and absinthe. Says Bishop: “Our goal is that 10 years from now we’ll be the distillery other distillers want to go to.” Spirits of French Lick 8145 W.
