...This solar
eclipse is a boom for Indiana’s tourism industry, and we are expecting millions of visitors to show up for this historical and magical event.
ON THE COVER
Celebrating Indiana’s Total Solar Eclipse
It’s a big deal. A really big deal. So if you haven’t already, do it now. Mark your calendar for April 8, 3:00 p.m. EST. It’s the day for Indiana’s total solar eclipse, when much of Indiana will experience total darkness for almost four-and-a-half minutes. And it won’t happen again until 2044. This solar eclipse is a boom for Indiana’s tourism industry, and we are expecting millions of visitors to show up for this historical and magical event. Communities around the state have been gearing up for more than a year, planning events, festivals, parties, and special viewing areas just for the occasion. So how could we not feature these celebrations in this issue’s cover story? You’ll read about ways to experience the excitement of the eclipse, not just on April 8, but also in the days leading up to it. And since this is our first issue of the new year, we’ve once again published our “Staycation Guide” pages which will help with your 2024 vacation plans. Within this section you’ll find lots of itineraries and ideas on how to spend multiple days exploring all over Indiana. In our “Happy Trails” article you won’t be reading about hiking and biking, but instead you’ll be motivated to travel the state’s network of specialty trails. You’ll read about culinary trails, antique trails, a thrift trail, and more. We also highlight one the newest, the Black History Trail in Wayne County, where you’ll learn about the area’s Underground Railroad movement and the contributions of Wayne County’s Black community. Our “Unique Spaces” story features some unusual and creative spots around the state where you can host an event or a family/ friends get-together. From an old jeans factory to an opera house, these places will inspire you to plan something special. And as always, be sure and check out our website, travelindiana.com, for even more trip ideas. Happy and safe travels!

t’s being said that the total solar eclipse coming to Indiana on Monday, April 8, 2024, is an event we will remember for the rest of our lives. The last one in the same place was in 1869, and the next one to affect the area won’t be until 2153. “Totality is the most amazing, earth-shattering thing you’ll ever see in your life,” said Dan McGlaun, a Clayton resident and self-described umbraphile who has chased 15 such spectacles all over the world. A mathematician, he is also the creator of www.eclipse2024.org, where he tracks 140,000 cities on some 120,000 pages. Even NASA uses his data and features his site in their exhibits. McGlaun cautioned that everyone should wear special eclipse glasses so they can watch all of the phases, but when totality is complete, it will be safe to take them off and look up into the sky. And while the sun will be the biggest show in town, it won’t be the only one. Throughout the path of totality, cities are planning events that will make the experience even more enjoyable. In Jay County, for example, a two-day “Moonstock” festival with music, food, camping, vendors and educational activities is on the calendar. They’ll also be holding a group wedding for couples who want to make a special day even more so. In Delaware County the weekend leading up to Monday will begin in Muncie on Thursday with an art walk and continue with makers’ markets, local food, and music. On Saturday they’ll

have a “Light Up the Sky” light show as well as a concert at the fairgrounds, and Sunday will see a concert that features Orchestra Indiana and Ball State PBS at the Minnetrista Museum and Gardens. Or plan to “Get Mooned in Boone County” with an eclipseeve concert and light show featuring the music of Pink Droyd. Over in Thorntown, enjoy the eclipse at Dull’s Tree Farm for the perfect setting from which to observe this natural phenomenon, or spend the day at Mulberry Fields Park in Zionsville, where STEM activities, food trucks, crafts and family bike rides will be waiting to be discovered. Lebanon is planning an ‘80s weekend with roller skates, a costume contest and more. In Henry County rural Farmer’s Pike and Saddle Club will have camping with electric set-ups

beginning on Friday to accommodate out-of-towners. The Indigos will perform Saturday and Monday and Cook & Belle on Sunday with laser shows all three nights. New Castle Main Street will celebrate with food, music and games.

Wayne County bills itself as “The Best Place to Be in the Dark” and backs up this claim with a multitude of activities that begin on Friday and last through Monday. Located at the confluence of several major highways, they are establishing viewing locations all around the county and turning the fairgrounds into a campground with electricity and water for 400 sites. Visitors will be entertained by tribute bands saluting Michael Jackson, Elton John, Led Zepplin and Kiss. They will also have Zorb balls, zip-lining, a drone show, fireworks, rock-climbing, educational forums and more. In Indianapolis NASA and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have teamed up to offer a day filled with astronauts, STEM activities and

In Shelby County the open farmland at Pat & Pat in the Dark will be the place to go for parking, camping and viewing. Similar opportunities are available at the Meltzer Farm next to the Meltzer Nature Preserve. Many churches and nonprofits will hold Eclipse Day events, and the Skyline Drive-In eclipse event will offer campsites, classic movies at night and daytime activities from April 5-8. The price of a ticket brings with it a pair of eclipse glasses for each attendee. A musical festival in downtown Shelbyville is being planned for April 7 with a full eclipse theme.

Visitors can Ride the Rails into totality on the Spirit of Jasper. Riders will disembark the train and watch as the sky becomes dark before returning back to the Jasper Train Depot. Knox County, which will have the longest period of totality at four minutes and five seconds, is planning a brew fest, a Weddingpalooza, “Laughter Before the Darkness” at the Red Skelton Museum and music
by Think Floyd to accompany their “the Dark Side of the Wabash” event. They are also commemorating the significance of “Tecumseh’s Eclipse” in 1806, when the chief’s brother’s prophecy united the Indigenous People against their oppressors. But there’s more, too. “The thing I always come back to is that Covid separated us for so long, and we had to be so purposeful in that separation,” said Sarah Wolfe, Vincennes’ eclipse events director. “Now we have an opportunity to be together under an event that is out of our control but a very unifying happening. We need to take advantage of that as an introspective healing that we don’t often get these days.”

PLAN A VISIT TO ENJOY SMALL TOWN AMBIENCE On any given day, Chesterton, snugged against Lake Michigan’s majestic South Shore, ringed by rolling dunes and deep forests, will welcome you home. It’s an easy trip to make from Chicago or Southwest Michigan, with a rich variety of activities and destinations to keep your whole family occupied for the day or a whole weekend. Begin in Downtown Chesterton, genially red-bricked, settled, comfortable in its own skin. Once upon a time it was a railroad town, an industrial center where organs, china, and women’s apparel were manufactured, an agricultural hub for the farmers who grew wheat and corn and raised cattle and hogs. Those days are mostly gone but the ghosts remain in a town proudly haunted by its history. You’ll find an abundance of parking along Broadway. Look for a spot near Thomas Centennial Park with its ancient oaks and maples and iconic bandstand, for a century and a half this community’s gathering place in times of celebration and sorrow. Now stroll the Downtown, where the storefronts are inviting and the shopping eclectic: Vintage vinyl, used and antiquarian books and curios, toys, vintage candy, exquisite jewelry, art, pottery, womenswear and accessories, specialty plants and terrariums, Amish furniture, yarns and weaving goods, boutique homewares, antiques. By this time you’re probably famished. Maybe thirsty too. Choose from classic diner fare, the region’s coziest coffee house, artisanal breads and pastries, Polish, Italian, Mexican, gastro, grass-fed beef. Choose too from a couple of local breweries, a distillery, a winery, and several very fine craft beer establishments.

On a budget? Then keep your wallet in your pocket and put the Westchester Township History Museum on your itinerary; no charge to tour its exhibits. Or visit the Chesterton Art Center, an institution for more than 50 years. Explore the boardwalks of Coffee Creek Park, an absolute gem hidden in the very heart of downtown. Or bring your binoculars to the Westchester Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a wetland brought to vibrant life again after serving for many years as the municipal dump. Train buffs take note: The Norfolk Southern and CSX lines run from one end of the town to the other and five different grade-crossings offer excellent opportunities for spotting and photography. Finally, prepare to venture into adventure. There’s a reason why Henry Cowles invented the science of ecology here in Porter County. Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park—a 10-minute drive from Downtown Chesterton—each boast miles of hiking trails traversing a wide range of ecosystems and habitats: dune and swale, wetland, prairie, bog, and woodland. To see how this area’s settlers carved a new life for themselves in the Dunes, explore the historic Chellberg Farm and Bailly Homestead and Cemetery at the National Park. Try your hand at one of the area’s popular pastimes: hiking, exploring, geocaching or crosscountry skiing. And be sure to stop at the State Park’s Nature Center or the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center, both of them are hosts to family-friendly programming all year round. Come experience all we have to offer, Chesterton is waiting for you.

Unique Spaces I
t used to be that when you needed a venue for a gathering your choices were limited to a church, a hotel, a restaurant, or your own backyard. But modern eventplanners, be they brides, corporate team-builders, or someone planning a family/friend retreat, have lots more options from which to choose. Journeyman at The American Factory in Valparaiso is one of them. What began as The Woolen Mill in the 1860s is now home to a distillery, multiple restaurants, a rooftop bar — and private celebrations. Three extraordinary spaces retain their industrial vibe while lending themselves well to dressedup elegance. Also here is the Four Corners Winery and Wedding Venue, a Quonset barn with plenty of space outside for an outdoor ceremony. For smaller groups – showers, birthday parties and the like -- their upstairs and deck are open for after-hours events. The Mascot Hall of Fame in Whiting, always fun to visit, now also rents out its Furitorium with a view of the Lake Michigan shoreline, a full bar and outdoor patio. This is a great spot for corporate gatherings, showers, receptions, press conferences and educational assemblies. Younger guests will

Traditional or quirky, formal or casual, venues in and around French Lick-West Baden will make any wedding celebration special.
O
nce an engaged couple has set the date, the next question is where to have the ceremony. The church one of them has gone to since childhood? A nearby hotel or local restaurant? Or for something really special, how about a destination wedding in historic French Lick-West Baden, where ideal venues abound for every budget, whether the couple is looking for indoor and traditional or outdoor and quirky. “In the heart of French Lick, West Baden and all of Orange County, a destination wedding creates memories woven with threads of love, adventure and breathtaking backdrops,” said Brandy Ream, executive director of Visit French Lick-West Baden. “Begin your life together, return to continue the adventure and captivate the romance with us in Southern Indiana.” The Hoosier Ballroom is the largest space at the French Lick Resort, with room for more than 2,500 guests, but it isn’t the only one. The Windsor Ballroom will hold 1,450, and the Clifton Ballroom 680. For smaller services the Taggart Ballroom will hold around 200. Also at the resort is Table One, an ideal spot for a champagne bridal shower luncheon, or perhaps the group would prefer an elegant garden party. The hotel has staff to help coordinate the perfect event. Plenty of spots on the property are ideal for the groom’s friends to throw him a memorable bachelor party, whether that means a round of golf on a Pete Dye course, a few games in the bowling alley or spending time in the casino. The big finish can be dinner at either 1875: The Steakhouse or Sinclair’s.

The bride and her party, meanwhile, might choose to luxuriate and prepare for the big day ahead at one of the spas. The Spa at French Lick offers massages, facials, wraps and the opportunity to soak in the same restorative springs that made the location famous in the 1800s. The Spa at West Baden offers many of the same services in an Old World European setting complete with a lap pool and fitness center.

Another option is Abbeydell Hall at Legend of French Lick. The space has large windows, French doors, an awning under which to park cars temporarily and an adjacent parking lot. The 6,600-square-foot room is carpeted and comes with a stage and movable dance floor, along with everything necessary for a reception and people who will help to make it happen. At the Blueberry Hill Estate in Paoli weddings can be held in the estate house, on a hilltop or in a beautifully crafted barn, depending on what the bride and groom have in mind. The 110-acre estate with manicured gardens has several options for holding a ceremony they say will be filled with romance and magic. For something a little less traditional maybe the event space at the Patoka Lake Winery will fit the bill. The room has a fireplace along with dance floor, stage, warming kitchen and porch area where guests can gather, and it’s all right on the lake. When the festivities are over, the happy couple can begin their honeymoon in a cozy suite above the tasting room or in a converted silo. The Patoka Lake Marina offers a deck for a waterfront wedding as well as the option to have the rehearsal dinner or the ceremony on the Voyager tour boat during a sunset cruise. Their houseboats make a fun spot for the bachelor and bachelorette parties, too. Another out-of-the-box possibility is to host a cocktail reception aboard the French Lick Scenic Railway. For a more rustic event, they also offer a train ride followed by a Cowboy Cookout and a Tasting Train with drinks and small plates.
Or how about this: a wedding in the loft at the Big Red Barn at the Wilstem Wildlife Park. The loft accommodates up to 250 people and is accessible for everyone on the invitation list. It comes with a dance floor and catering options, and while they’re here, guests can enjoy animal encounters, trail rides and ziplining. It doesn’t get much more offbeat — or fun — than that. State Park Inns:
Where Happily Ever Afters Begin! story by GLENDA WINDERS

an you think of a better place to have your wedding than an inn at one of Indiana’s state parks? The historic and scenic lodges are rustic yet elegant, and the natural surroundings provide places for your guests to hike, enjoy a wide variety of activities or just relax. It’s the perfect place to start a new life together. At Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park, for example, Melodeon Hall has room for 250 wedding guests as well as a bridal suite with vanities and mirrors where the bride and her attendants can get ready in comfort. For a bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, or smaller wedding the décor in the cozier Allison Peabody Room — rustic stonework, open-beamed ceiling, and two fireplaces — is perfect. You can’t beat the view of the Ohio River and surrounding Clifty Falls State Park from the Overlook Room at Clifty Inn. This venue offers 4,500 square feet of space

for you and your guests and comes with a spectacular pre-event area that has a fireplace. Clifty Inn offers additional rooms as well if your guest list is smaller, and the Riverfront Patio is ideal for an intimate outdoor ceremony. At Fort Harrison State Park Inn and Garrison Conference Center you’ll have plenty of choices. The Blue Heron Ballroom, the largest event space here, holds up to 250 guests with chandeliers and arched-glass doors that open onto a patio above the practice green with a view of the golf course beyond. If you plan your nuptials for early evening, this west-
facing room can provide a sunset backdrop. The warm Roosevelt Room can hold up to 100 people, and the Theodore Room has quick access to the firepit and lounge area outside. At McCormick’s Creek State Park, the first in the state, a wedding at the Canyon Inn might take place in the Oak Room, which holds up to 130 people and features cathedral ceilings and wood-crafted details. The Birdhouse Back Porch is a bright, windowed area that would be the ideal setting for a bridal luncheon or rehearsal dinner. Thinking of an outdoor wedding? The park’s amphitheater has all kinds of potential. An outdoor wedding would also be beautiful at Pokagon State Park and Potawatomi Inn and Conference Center located right on the beach and offering a sun deck that seat up to 250 people. The Courtyard is a beautiful option for a smaller group of up to 60. Their Lake James Ballroom is a popular choice for a wedding reception as it will seat up to 320 comfortable with room for a dance floor. The ballroom also opens to a patio and firepits. The Snow Lake Room has the capacity for 100 people – plenty big for a rehearsal dinner or other wedding-related activities. TOP: Overlook Room at Clifty Inn in Madison. The Lusk Room at Turkey Run Inn is the most stylish, with exposed brick, woodcrafted ceiling, and view of surrounding Turkey Run State Park. Additional rooms at the Inn are available for rehearsal dinners and bridal showers. Outdoor locations around the inn and throughout the park are popular choices, with Sunset Point. The State Park Inns all offer unique personalities and opportunities, perfect for your special day. Wedding guests will enjoy being surrounded by scenic beauty and comfortable overnight lodging. nglishton Park is a non-profit corporation operating a beautiful 250-acre campus in Southwest Indiana. Ten miles east of Scottsburg on the outskirts of the small historical town of Lexington, Indiana. The property is secluded, quiet, and restful. For more than 180 years, Englishton Park has been a beautiful, peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The campus originally served as the summer estate of prominent “Hoosier” William Hyden English from August 27, 1822, to February 7, 1896. Mr. English, was a U.S. Representative of Indiana from 1853 to 1861 and the Democratic Party’s nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1880. He and his presidential running mate, Winfield Scott Hancock, lost narrowly to their Republican opponents, James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur, however, he still became one of the wealthiest men in Indiana. Later his son Captain William E. English made Englishton Park his family home. William English an 1873 graduate of Northwestern Christian University (now Butler University) in Indianapolis practiced law until 1882, then ran for Congress. He was first elected to office in 1880 as a State House of Representatives member, then became a Democratic National Conventions delegate in 1892 and 1896, and
chairman of the committee on rules and order of business in the former. In the Spanish–American War (1896–1898), he served as captain and aide-de-camp on the staff of Gen. Joseph Wheeler. Many former presidents, celebrities, politicians, and military have visited The Rawson Center at Englishton Park. Today, it offers a unique, spacious, and charming private space for anyone to host their retreat, reunion, wedding, or weekend getaway. There are seven bedrooms, a full kitchen and a well-equipped conference and dining area. Take a walk outside to explore the two shelter houses, walking trails, two ponds and rustic forest. We hope you will choose to be a part of the mission “Enriching lives through action and affirmation!” As the rental proceeds benefit the Englishton Park Children’s Summer Camp Program for at risk children ages 8-12 for academic remediation and positive behavior modification programs.

few years ago, Anderson resident Becky Hamilton Smith and her family were in search of an adventure that didn’t involve hiking. That’s when she saw a post about the Tenderloin Lover’s Trail on Facebook. “It was shortly after Covid restrictions ended, and we were a little stir crazy,” recalled Becky. “We love food and adventure, so we combined the two and took the trail.” While Becky’s son, Ethan, was home from college and her daughter, Emily, had time off from her job as a nurse, the entire family, including Becky’s husband, Rob, hit the trail, completing it in a long weekend. “We ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner out in order to accomplish this,” Becky said. “Emily and I loved the tenderloin at Amazing Joes in Muncie. Ethan liked the 1925 Pubhouse in Anderson, and Rob liked the Oasis in Plainfield.” Using the Indiana Culinary Trails Passport app on their phones, they checked in at restaurants on the Tenderloin Lover’s Trail, enjoyed some family time, and ended up winning prizes for their efforts as well. “It was fun to receive the T-shirt for our efforts. We like to have that carrot dangled in front of our nose,” Becky explained. “It makes the challenge more exciting!” According to Tina Keaffaber of Indiana Foodways Alliance, the Tenderloin Lover’s

In Carmel, you can explore 50 miles and 13 stops for wines, whiskies, and brews on their Brews & Barrels Trail. Or, check out some great coffees and shops on the Carmel Caffeine Trail. Chocolate Trail: This sweet trail is free and is available year-round. All you need is your official passport (digital or paper). With 12 stops, the self-guided trail leads you to an 1890 candy factory, ice cream parlor, Amish market, donut shop, bakeries, restaurants, and gift shops. The highlight of the trail is Abbott’s Candies which has been making premium chocolate and caramels since the 1890s.
CARMEL TRAILS Part of the Indiana Glass Trail CarmelArtsAndDesign.com Carmel artist Nancy Keating’s “Cosmic Flow” mosaic murals were installed this year on the Civic Square Parking Garage in the city. Rivers of bold color waves undulate through contrasting black space while luminescent white orbs appear to float in the shimmering black. The mosaic was created with a combination of mirror, glass tiles and opaque art sheet glass.

O
n April 8, 2024, Hancock County, Indiana as well as several other Indiana counties will be experiencing a total solar eclipse. What makes this eclipse so special? First of all, it is supposed to be so much more spectacular than the one that happened in 2017. The moon is a little closer in the sky – this means it will take longer for it to completely cover the sun. In prime viewing areas – near the center of the path of totality, will experience four minutes of total darkness. Hancock County’s southeast corner lies within the 4 minute path. Also, it is very fortuitous that this area of Hancock County is rural with no large cities or towns nearby – so light pollution should not be an issue. Even in other areas of the county, where the time
88
traveliN travel iN Staycation 2024
of total darkness will not be quite 4 minutes - will provide excellent viewing sites for people wanting to see this once in a lifetime event. Hancock County has dedicated one website to provide eclipse viewers with all of the information about this amazing event. Not only will you be able to find information about places to view the eclipse, but you will also be able to find several different entities who will be hosting a variety of events. Some before, during, and after the eclipse. The Hancock County Historical Society will host a NASA expert, the Depot Restaurant is planning an eclipse celebration and Greenfield Parks and Recreation is hosting
some education programming. There will be a variety of viewing sites including wide open spaces - fields, parking lots, and parks. Please go to www.eclipseinhancock.org to get more information about some of the best eclipse information, and some of the best places to be “ON THE DARK SIDE.”

The name of the theater was selected from names submitted by the public, and was selected because of its location on what was U.S. 31, between U.S. 6 and 30. Janet Combs, who submitted the name, received a year’s family pass to the theater. ”Tri-Way” is one of the few operating drive-in theaters in the state of Indiana, and currently has four screens for your viewing pleasure.

rni Cohen opened the doors to the flagship restaurant in 1965 at Market Square Shopping Center in Lafayette. Originally seating a little over 100 people, within ten years Arni’s at Market Square was one of the largest restaurants in Indiana. The company is now owned by Arni’s two sons, Brad and Kurt Cohen. Brad describes his father as a “living legend” –“he was so great with people,” Brad says, explaining that growing up at Arni’s meant never meeting a stranger. Arni had a philosophy: Serve good food at a reasonable price, by employees that treat customers with respect, in return, your business will succeed. Even more important was his approach to the community. He believed that if Arni’s took

care of the community, the community will in turn take care of you. This philosophy has been a pretty successful one that has helped Arni’s become one of Indiana’s community restaurants with 17 locations. “I learned so much about human nature, being kind and caring, “Kurt adds, “we are very proud to be associated with a restaurant that has such a positive image in our communities.” Now, for over a decade, Arni’s has been serving fresh and delicious food with a friendly smile. When you come to Arni’s you’re getting more than just a good meal, you’re experiencing one of Indiana’s finest restaurant traditions. Family and friends all gather here to experience the feelgood environment, great service and the one-of-a-kind thin crust pizza.
